Akura's Awesomeness Countdown: 8...

What's up nerds?!

Last challenge I was super over-motivated and I had to cut down on my ambitions to basically zero.... So for the next weeks I'll try to do a bit more again... But I still want to keep it very simple and focus on the three big areas diet, movement and life. Moreover, I'll once again focus more on the qualitative progress than quantitative evaluation.

Diet:

Last challenge i got my blood analysed and everything is fine. Only my triglycerides ad my magnesium are a bit high. Combined with the fact that I had to buy a new suit for my wedding, this was enough motivation to start tracking my food intake again. For this challenge, I want to continue that: Calories and macros.

I'm still not entirely sure what my TDEE is... But I'll aim for 2000 kcal on normal days and 2200 kcal on gym days. I also want to have less than 200g of carbs, more than 100g of protein and less than 90g of fat... But I struggled with that a lot, so it will only be a secondary goal. What I actively want to pursuit is less sugar: After my own wedding and a couple of other celebration I indulged a lot in cake and pastries... So, at least on normal days I want to not have any sweets. (If there's a birthday party or something similar I'll try to keep my consumption lower than I normally would.)

Movement:

Last challenge I wanted to start dancing lessons again... But I realised I just want to dance with my wife and not to learn how to with strangers... So, I discarded the dancing lessons for the foreseeable future. But I'll tryto go to workshops and dancing parties with my wife. But that's nothing I'll want to plan for in this challenge...

Last challenge I also signed up at a gym next to work and I guess it will be one of the main goals to go to the gym three times a week right in the morning before work. I don't expect to manage that, but I'll give it my best. To augment the gym training I have to move more on the other days. That means playing Ring Fit Adventure or going for a run on the other days. Here the focus will lie on movement, so less intensity than a normal workout would request. Moreover, 15 to 20 will be enough for this.

I also want to move more in the office, but that's more a problem of remembering it than actually doing it.

Life:

As always, my brain feels like it's shooting around in a pinball machine and bouncing off of my various interest and hobbies... Last challenge I managed to be quite satisfied with myself overall, but I'm lacking focus. So, between learning more Rubik's cube algorithms, doing work for the Go Association, doing stuff with and for friends... I want to manage to finish two books, not counting the audiobook I'll listen to in the gym. The later is Bretonische Geheimnisse (Breton Secrets in English); part seven of a German crime/mystery novel about a detective in Brittany. It has an amazing narrator, so I always listen to this series instead of reading it. The books I want to finish on paper are the first Firefly novel Big Damn Hero where I'm right in the middle and London's Triumph; a book about the history of London during the Tudor era through the eyes of merchants. Plus, I'll read a couple of mangas...

Moreover, I want to focus a bit on gamedev and create 100 levels for my puzzle game. It will have 99 levels at the end, but in order to get there, I have to practice creating them. One level takes about 5 minutes, so it's quite easy to get a large quantity. Quality on the other hand... well... that's what the practice is for!

Finally, I want to be able to play Song Of Storms (from the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time soundtrack) and Toss A Coin To Your Witcher (from the Witcher soundtrack) on the guitar. But I don't now when I'll be satisfied with my performance... So I'll just call it practicing the guitar for this challenge.

So... an awkward start to the challenge... A hurricane was blowing over Germany today and most colleagues of mine stayed home. I was unsure since my office is just a 10-min drive away, but when I saw shingles from our roof getting blow onto the street I decided to not go anywhere for the foreseeable future.

Diet:

Unfortunately, that meant that the cake I wanted to bring to the office to celebrate my wedding was home with me... My wife only got like 20%...

giphy.gif

The rest of my food was reasonable... Oatmeal for breakfast... A pretzel with smoked salmon, cheese and some cold cuts for lunch... And chili for supper. Still, I didn't bother tracking my calories today...

Movement:

Due to the hurricane I also didn't go to my first regularly planned gym workout. Sure... I could have worked out at home... But I had to paint one-and-a-half walls of our bedroom.

giphy.gif

I always underestimate how tedious that is... And I could/should have been motivated enough for a workout, but I also was frustrated by work. Lame excuses I guess... 🙈

Life:

Practiced the guitar a bit... Found another tutorial on YouTube for Toss A Coin To Your Witcher which explained thing a bit differently and better than the ones I saw before. Especially, the guy showed strumming patterns which were absent in the other tutorials. Now I know everything, I guess, so what's left is practice, practice, practice...

What I realised once again is that I know very little of what's going on on a guitar. My last guitar lesson was 18 years ago and now I try to teach myself. But it might help to talk to someone who can point out my main mistakes to me... I probably don't have the time nor the money for weekly lessons... But maybe once a month or so...?

Diet:

So... After inhaling a whole chocolate cake I'm the heaviest today since Christmas or so... But today my food intake was significantly better! Not good yet, but better... My usual cheese bagel for breakfast, a few biscuits during a meeting, a salad with meat balls and eggs and a bread roll for lunch, and halibut with various vegetables and black rice for dinner. Plus some whisky... 2300kcal in total. Cutting out the biscuits would have given a great result. And cooking with olive oil s a bit "dangerous", too. Obviously, I won't worry about the latter too much... But if I really care about reducing calories and at, it needs to be considered too in the future...

Movement:

Nothing... I left work early to arrive for the plumber to fix our sink... Then some work for the Go Association and then it was time for supper. My wife is often quite hungry when coming home from work, but maybe we should push back supper a bit in order to have time for some light exercise...

Life:

For the same reasons as above I was too busy to work on my puzzle game... But I managed to practice the guitar a bit.

And my in-laws bought me a copy if the first Witcher novel in Polish! Now... I wanted to read something else next... But maybe I'll grab the German translation as well and try to dual-read it...

Ah... Just the regular 3x3. I can solve it easily enough, but right now I'm trying to understand what's going when doing certain algorithms.

Diet:

Yesterday I consumed 2400kcal which is too much, but okay for a workout day. Yogurt with oatmeal for breakfast; a Fleischpflanzerlsemmel (basically the German/Bavarian equivalent of a hamburger or meatball sandwich) plus three eggs as a post-workout meal; some salad and a bread roll for lunch with a piece of chocolate cake as dessert; and fried seafood and vegetables with bread for supper. So.... nothing bad, actually. I brought the cake to work to celebrate my wedding with my colleagues... so it kinda doesn't count anyway... 😅 Apart from that, it was mostly a problem of portion size I guess. On the plus side, I didn't crave any food during lunchtime and was just a little "normally" hungry. So... I guess I could have skipped the lunch and/or reduced my post-workout meal. Let's see how it goes tomorrow...

Today I was absolutely not in the mood to track... By my food choices weren't too bad. A cheese bagel for breakfast; a cheeseburger without a bun plus chips plus a beer for lunch (celebrating a colleagues birthday); two biscuits in the afternoon; and Brotzeit for supper: bread, butter, cold cuts, goat cheese, smoked tilapia and a salad. Probably too much... but okay.

Movement:

Yesterday in the gym I had my first proper gym workout without a trainer... And everything was too easy! When the trainer built the routine for me last week, the weights seemed appropriate; but yesterday I breezed through every exercise and I have zero DOMS. Hopefully I can restrain myself and increase the weights only a little tomorrow... Moreover, the treadmills at the gym can display speed both in km/h and mph... But it doesn't tell you which is currently used!!! 🤬 That demolished me yesterday...

Today I could have played Ring Fit Adventure for about 20 minutes after getting home... But I was too lazy. Moreover, my body felt a little stiff and tired... Noteworthy: On my way home I had to stand on thetrain for 40 minutes again and, again, it was no problem. The futon bed might actually have helped with my back problems.

Life:

Practised the guitar a bit the last two days but not really as long as I wanted to. And I'm getting close to the end of Big Damn Hero... So I have to decide soon whether I want to give the dual read of The Witcher a try...

Grats on the progress at the gym - how'd upping things go yesterday? The treadmill situation seems very poorly thought out, shame on the designers there. But most of all, yay for the lack of back problems on the train! Here's to that becoming a permanent lack of back pain!

Dumb question from someone who never got into Rubik's cubes.... what do you mean by algorithms? Like standardized methods of solving them?

Exactly! Fixed sequences of moves that achieve certain results. E.g. swapping two corner pieces while leaving the rest unchanged. If you're solving a cube more efficiently, you usually try to separate between the strategy -- Is now the best time to swap these corner pieces? -- from the execution -- How can I swap the corner pieces?

Ah... well... 😅 "Hurricane" is probably not the best word... In German, it's "Orkan" which might better translated as "winter storm"...? 🤷‍♀️ Anyway, a strong storm which caused a lot of havoc and damage...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was super not in the mood to post here the last few days... Now I have to catch up on four days... Let's try to keep it short!

Diet:

Friday wasn't too bad at first, but then my wife and I decided to make pizza, have a few beers and watch some movies for Valentine's Day. Since we made the pizza ourselves, it wasn't too bad... But the dough alone was enough to blast through my calorie goal.

On Saturday we had friends over for dinner and I made salmon with fennel, broccoli and potatoes. Again, not too bad overall, but still too much.

Today I had a few eggs after my workout and turkey for dinner; so reaching my protein goal was easy! Still... 2300 kcal...

The main problem seems to be portion control as far as I can judge at the moment...

Movement:

Friday in the gym I was quite agitated. Firstly, because of the arsehole spending more time on Instagram than actually training while sitting on the machines. Secondly, because my workout took forever, and I was still searching for a weight range that is challenging but doable. In particular, the leg exercises were super annoying. I really, really want to incorporate dumbbell/barbell exercises like squats, but I'm not sure how to learn them properly...

Moreover, I overdid it a bit and probably didn't keep good form while doing the low row... So I had back pain for the last few days. Nothing serious; in the "normal" range (Why the hell do I have "normal range" of pain... 😞) but I had to take some Ibuprofen over the weekend.

Yesterday I did a Ring Fit Adventure session which went well. I also pumped up my Swiss ball to use as an office chair and it helped quite a bit. In the evening I decided to go to the gym today but only use the treadmill... "Showing up at all" and so on... but then my back felt okay this morning and I did a few "proper" exercises before going onto the treadmill for 20 minutes. Went well overall, but I forgot to stretch afterwards... 😔

And now my back hurts again because I flipped our mattresses. (futon mattresses are gorram heavy!!)

Life:

A bit of guitar... 10 new levels for my puzzle game... Finished Big Damn Hero...

Conveniently, NF has you covered.... There will always be tweaks and mods you can make to make it better for you, but starting is a good way to find those.

UGH. That's so freaking annoying. If there are limited machines, and you've finished all your other exercises, you could probably politely say something like "hey, you mind if I work in?" (#37) I much prefer sticking to my set routine, but when things get busy and I have to switch the order up (or even sub different exercises), I often find I can do better at x than I think I can, because it's usually my last exercise and I'm tired when I get to it.

Hope your back feels better. Do you flip the mattress often? I wouldn't have thought a futon mattress needs it...

I've read that post and also Starting Strength which I remembered I bought a few years ago. My main concern is that I can't get any immediate feedback. Filming myself can in itself be tricky and posting here or in the NF Facebook groups seems like a slow process.

As far as I understand it, futon mattresses have to be flipped even more often. Especially in the beginning they have to be flipped every week in order to "settle down" or whatever. Afer a while it's enough to flip them once a month.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Diet:

Stressful days... Many bad decisions...

Yesterday started out fine; but after my wife and I got home late from Ikea we went out for dinner.I had a steak with chips and salad and a third of her pizza.

Today I had a super annoying morning at work and went to McDonald's for lunch and bought a pudding as a post-workout treat.

Movement:

Couldn't go to the gym today because of a meeting at work. Played Ring Fit Adventure instead, but that's not the same of course. The next two gym days are also messy due to meetings at work and an appointment with my therapist. Maybe I'll go to the gym on Saturday... Otherwise, it will have to wait until next Wednesday.

Life:

A bit of guitar...

Started to read the first collection of The Witcher short stories parallel in Polish and in German. Luckily, there's a YouTube channel which has an audiobook of the book.

You can start with the lower technical movements, like goblet squats, landmine presses, hip thrusts, etc.? They are harder to screw up. Once you're more familiar with the mechanics, it could give you some confidence to try other free weights. I'm also a big fan of cable work, which is often easier to ease into vs dumbbells.

See, that's already confusing me. The alignment/position in a goblet squat is, from my perspective, totally different from a barbell (back) squat! But yes... I'll start with such easier variation. Also, my gym has "cross fit section" (or whatever that's supposed to be) where they have 10kg barbells. I'll probably try those out before tackling a full 20kg empty barbell.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Diet:

Has ramen with pork and a few gyoza for lunch. Dinner then was a stew with seafood potatoes and various vegetables. I had to guesstimate most ingredient weights... so... Hard to judge the calories. Probably a bit too much overall... But the foods themselves were reasonably healthy!

Movement:

Was thinking about Ring Fit Adventure after work... But I wanted to assemble the shoe rack we bought on Tuesday and that took way longer than expected.

Life:

Not much due to the shoe rack... Read more of The Last Wish in Polish/German on the train though.

Yup, that's mostly true; goblet squats have more in common with front BB squats, rather than back squats. That's actually part of their appeal: they teach you how to brace your core properly, with a more upright position. Holding the weight in front of you also engages more of your quads than holding it behind your shoulders, in addition to teaching you how to 'pack' your upper back properly, plus it improves grip strength AND mobility. Because you're holding he weight between your legs, there's also a built-in cue not to let your knees cave in. Effectively it's a great 'baseline' squat movement to teach you how to do it properly. ;) I've seen it used as a recommendation to 'clean up technique' to sort out deficiencies in back squat form in addition to being a great way to learn the movement, because it automatically encourages correct positioning.

Similarly, a common issue with beginners doing something like deadlifts is that they end up 'cheating' by using their lower back & quads to help lift the weight rather than trying to focus more on the posterior chain (glutes, hamstrings); there's also a VERY common problem with under-activated glutes in that movement. Hip thrusts (and glute bridges, and other activation exercises) go a long way to teaching your body how to hinge properly, with fewer moving parts to distract from the 'correct' form.

Look at you dropping all the knowledge! 😅 It might take a few attempts to understand and implement everything... but I'll definitely try some goblet squats next time in the gym!

So... The last few days had been kinda taxing...

On Friday I had the second appointment with my new therapist. (In Germany you get five for free to get to know each other and then file and request with your insurance to get more.) And... well... He said that I have to change my personality to solve my problems and that thinks he can't help me... So... I either have to find a new one or help myself. Anyway, I got pretty wasted on Friday night.

Saturday my parents-in-law dropped by for lunch. As the good, old Polish housewife she is, my mother-in-law brought pots and plates full of food; even cooked noodles. So... I guess I have to explain to her over the next decade that when she's our guest she's our guest. Wish me luck! 😅 At night we went out with a couple of friends to a Chinese restaurant. So, overall lots of food.

And Sunday was the (pre-)birthday party of my niece. Lots of cake... 🙁

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today...

Diet:

Food was fine. A bit too much (2115 kcal), but considering I did work out and had three biscuits at work, it's okay.

Movement:

Played Ring Fit Adventure after work. Yesterday I increased the difficulty and I feel very comfortable with it so far.

Life:

Not much... Reading The Last Wish on the train and a bit of game dev; no new levels though, just a reload animation.

Realizing I am not an expert on this, but your form looks pretty good to me. Your feet are firmly grounded (nice ankle flexibility, by the way), your knees track over your feet, your back stays straight, and your head stays up. If it feels good to you, and you feel tension/ work in your legs, you're probably good. One thing I couldn't tell - are you bracing your core when you squat? It took me a while to figure out that "bracing the core" didn't just mean back muscles - abs and obliques contribute to that, too, and provide more stability than just back muscles.

Probably not enough... Someone in the NF Academy Facebook group said I should try more weight. That will probably with that.

Diet:

Was okay today. 2245 kcal. Mostly due to my wife bringing home a Krapfen (German jelly doughnut) from work which we shared. In Germany we celebrate Pancake Day/Mardi Gras with an obscene amount of that pastry. (Also, I snacked on a bit of bacon...) Thankfully, lent starts tomorrow...

Movement:

Played Ring Fit Adventure. Wanted to play longer, but then I was quite winded after 20 minutes. The increased difficulty makes itself noticeable...

Life:

Reading on the train... Guitar while watch telly with my wife in the evening... And 10 new levels for my puzzle game; now with a hazard/enemy!

Huh, I always figured the steps were pretty well fixed, but I guess it makes sense that you could theoretically do some of them in different sequences.

I once saw an interview with a speedcuber and he said that there's a popular sequence (to achieve something I forgot...) which is longer than the known mathematical optimum. However, speedcubers prefer it, since it's way faster to perform (with human hands).

Diet:

Wednesday: Good food choices, but a bit to many calories. Seems like I'm somehow "stuck" at 2200kcal for most days...

Thursday: Way too much. In particular, my wife and I went out for dinner. On the plus side, we shared a pizza instead of having a whole one each.

Today: Was quite hungry after my workout and had a yogurt. That tipped me over. Also, I didn't think during the day and had a bigger lunch than usually... Also, I struggled a lot to track my food today. Not in the mood...

Movement:

Had to go to city hall on Wednesday to pick up my wife's and my passport in the morning. So, I skipped gym. Which might have been a good idea since I got incredible back/shoulder pain in the afternoon. It sits right at the lower end of the trapezius. I had that a couple of times last year on my old after waking up. but now it started out of nowhere and with no obvious cause! And on Wednesday it got so bad that I could barely sleep... Now it's mostly fine, but I was still too afraid to go to the gym this morning... Played Ring Fit Adventure though...

Life:

Not much... No guitar... A few improvements on my game, but no new levels... Reading on the train yesterday...

And yesterday evening my wife and I met our parish priest to register for the church wedding in May.

Diet:

Wanted to over-compensate today for my excessive calorie intake the last few days... Didn't work... I planned to have to (relatively) meals, one around noon after working out and one at night. But then I had some bread and two frankfurters in the afternoon as a snack and I landed at 2185kcal. Also, I didn't track everything since my wife made a curry/chili/whatever dish with tons of different vegetables for dinner; so I only tracked the meat and cheese and oil...

Movement:

Played Ring Fit Adventure around noon pre-breakfast.

Life:

I "wasted" time doing my taxes for 2018 and playing Octopath Traveler (a Japanese role-playing game which you can sink hundreds of hours into...). Did a bit of work for the Go Association, too. For my game I created teleporters and ten new levels. Level design starts to get tricky with this new element... 👀

Diet:

My wife made cake... Cheesecake to be precise. Relatively healthy with very little amounts of margarine and sugar. Still cake though...

Movement:

Went for a run in the morning and spent the rest of the day in front of the computer. At least I managed to consistently do a pull-up whenever I entered my office.

Life:

A bit of game dev, but mostly  work for the Go Association.

The teleport thing is neat; is it hard to program, to keep velocity and stuff?

Surprisingly not! The game engine I use keeps track of velocity and everything else. The only thing what I had to do was:

if ball enters area:
	move ball to new place

Usually it's a pipe dream that things that are simple in my head actually are simple in code. But her it's the case.

Sorry to hear about the random shoulder pain - did it go away over the weekend?

Yeah... Kinda went away as suddenly as it appeared... 🤷‍♀️

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So... Today I had pretty depressed and made some bad decisions.

Diet:

Has some ice cream for lunch... and now for dessert after dinner...

Movement:

Got up early in the morning to go to the gym, but then depression hit me super hard. I was thinking about how I couldn't go the last two weeks how I won't be able to go next week due to a conference and -- because why not -- about the corona virus. So I didn't go...

Life:

Came home too late to do anything reasonable. One positive thing: The kilt I ordered arrived and I like it. I still need a proper belt and a sporran though... And enough courage to wear it.
