Haikoo
*Haikoo nudges the half closed door and it groans open. She steps in, takes a look around, brushes some dust from her bunk and tosses her ruck onto it. * Oh, hai! It's been a while. I don't even know how long. Truthfully, I was always most active in the irc chat (RIP :`( ), but I stumbled into NF in May of 2012 and popped up in forums here and there, too. I did some great things here, got fit for the first time in my life, did some fun 5ks, mud runs, even a Go Ruck Challenge (as they were called at the time), lifted some heavy stuff, had shoulder surgery (ok not a fun), went to Camp NF. Then Life got heavy. Mr. Koo became chronically ill, and life kind of fell apart. In the ensuing few years I basically lost all of my physical progress and some of my mental. I have been up and down, emotionally. Lately, life is in sort of a holding pattern. We haven't had any huge upsets in a while. Our days are full (3 kids will do that), but I've been making slow changes. Traditionally, I have been a Ranger, but I have been doing Martial Arts (mixed-just learning strengths from different styles, no cage fighting ) for over a year now. I'm a Blue belt at our school (our, because one of my sons is also a student there) and it's been great! I am still battling a lot of aches and pains as I struggle to get to my most fit place again. My body fights me at every single step, but the one consistent thing I have been doing is getting to my martial arts classes. Thus, now I'm a Monk with Ranger tendencies (or a Ranger with Monk tendencies? A Ronk? A Manger?) I want to get back to lifting, but it's just not time yet. I started the year with 90 day goals that I wrote out. After a couple weeks I realized I took on too much at once, so I pared it down to just the two for now and that's what I'm sticking with. 1: Steak on a Stick My food goal has been simple. Basically I'm cutting back carbs. I *always* feel better when I'm eating whole foods and taking it easy on the bread/grains/sugar. Less bloat, more satiated. So Paleo+Dairy/Keto if you want to put a label on it. I started about a month ago. I think I have gotten to ketosis briefly a couple times, but I'm not actively seeking that. I am not counting carbs or calories, because that always makes me obsessive and guarantees failure. Too much tracking and montioring does not work for me. Instead I am just being mindful of what goes into my mouth, but not thinking too hard about it! When I go off the rails (like I did when I had a couple glasses of wine the other night) I just get back on the next day. No big deal. That is the mindset I'm aiming for. 2. UnFork My Habitat We have lived in our house for about 18 years. Over the past 15 of those, life events have eaten up a huge chunk of our extra time--Adoption, twins, raising 3 kids, kids getting involved in sports, chronic illness, surgeries.... A couple places in our home (Basement office--basement in general) became the place we stuffed the junk we didn't have time to deal with. Recently, when the weather got cold, we became aware that mice were finding some this clutter a great place to hide. Thus began the great unforking of 2020. The past several weeks I have been using what spare time I had to start clearing and cleaning these spaces. I've already check off the crawl space, and after a thoough cleaning/bleaching found and plugged a mouse entry point. This is a huge job and will take time. Right now I'm concentrating on the office. We've made great progress, but there's still more to do. If we manage to finish that before challenge end, I'll move on to other portions of the basement. That's it. I have to keep it simple and keep working off my current momentum. No true theme, just a recurring stream of references that popped up while I was typing this. 5 Quote STR 7.2 | DEX 3.5 | STA 5.8 | CON 8.4 | WIS 5.55 | CHA 5.5 Most Recent Challenge Link to comment

Haikoo
So week 1 is...week 1. Monday on the food front was fine except we had ice cream in honor of Mr. Koo's birthday. No biggie, it was a planned deviation. Yesterday's food intake was on target, and today so far. I have honestly not gotten anything done this week in the basement. I've had a ton going on. Yesterday we had a follow up appointment with a neuropsychologist for one of the kids. She did not diagnose said kid with a specific math learning disability as we expected. She's calling it more of a general Executive functioning delay. I am familiar with what this means, but was a bit surprised because this kid seems so organized. In the end Dr. V said it's not actually terribly uncommon and it's actually pretty smart that they keep their environment very organized and just so in order to compensate for the difficulties they are having when it comes to organizing their thinking and problem solving skills. In the end, her lack of knowing how to approach the problems and the chaos in her head is keeping her from learning, especially math which requires the most fine tuned type of problem solving. Next we begin the arduous journey of figuring out what to do with this information and trying to get the school to provide some sort of accomodations. If they don't, I don't see how she's going to pass high school with the required math credits. I don't know if this well qualify as a "learning disability" though, at least not under the legal definition. Hiring tutors for this is no joke on the wallet, either. Thinking of it all has me mentally exhausted. Never would have thought this would be something we'd be dealing with. Hoping to get back into the office this afternoon, though, after a couple of dog walks I have scheduled. 1 hour ago, bigm141414 said: I imagine that your basement is like the Home Alone basement. Kishi
Wow! That's a lot to have to deal with. Also, don't give up hope. Schools have been known to be generous with IEPs and it's not always a matter of having a learning disability or an impulse control disorder. They might always say no, but that's no reason not to ask. Quote Work like a farmer, train like an athlete, fight like a soldier. 2 Tim. 2:3-6 BATTLE! Link to comment

Sloth the Enduring
Based on the limited information in the post, my guess is your child will qualify for a 504 plan. The 504 plan will contain accommodations, but it isn’t a special Ed IEP. I’d have a good idea of what you want before any meetings happen. Once the 504 plan (or IEP) is in place you have legal protections. 1 Quote “We might as well start where we are, use what we have and do what we can." – Caitlin Rivers Sloth: The Man with the Hammer battle log Link to comment
Haikoo
Thanks for the tips! I will definitely be doing a LOT of research and pushing for the 504 plan if she can't get an IEP. I have to sit down and compose some e-mails this weekend and get the ball rolling. Updates while I'm drinking my coffee: No real progress in the office, but the boys are gone all day and tonight, and my schedule is mostly clear until the evening now. I plan to head in there and get some things organized into the newly shelved closet. I had conditioning class for karate (it's really mixed martial arts, but it's way easier to just say karate lol) this morning and I realized either my cardio tolerance is SHOT or I'm trying to come down with something respiratory. Started getting that tell-tale windpipe/bronchial pain that I usually don't get unless I am/have been/am getting sick. HOPEFULLY it's just the former and I need to get my ass in gear and raise more heart rate more often. Also fitness related, I forgot to mention I have a silent goal of doing push ups every day. My old shoulder wound is creeping back into my life I'm trying to take steps to get more strength and range of motion into it before it tries to freeze on me. It's been 3 years since surgery and it's getting more sensitive and stiff. At any rate, January was 5 pushups each day, February is 10. March will be 15. I'm starting really slowly on purpose. I have the tendency to get elbow tendonitis if I try to do too many at once. I'm hoping this slow approach will keep that at bay. FOOD! It's going well. I haven't deviated off the path since Monday. I did have pasta last night, but it was "low carb" pasta. For you instant potheads out there, this is a really good recipe: https://twosleevers.com/pressure-cooker-keto-creamy-shrimp-scampi/ We did find the pasta wasn't as done as it could be, but we stirred it up better and got it more down into the liquid and heat. It finished cooking by the time we got the cheese and 1/2 n 1/2 mixed in. SUPER fast and very tasty meal. We're going out for dinner and a show tomorrow night, so I will likely deviate from the plan with that. On the progress front, I weighed in this morning and found I've lost about 5.5 lbs since Dec. 31. I lose weight REALLY slowly, so this is great progress and a really healthy rate. I can't really see it at all, but I feel it a TINY bit around my side abs/edges of the belly. I'm not too hung up on the number, but It's nice to see that I'm burning off a little fat. At some point, I want to start adding in a weightlifting session each week. I miss it! 3 Quote STR 7.2 | DEX 3.5 | STA 5.8 | CON 8.4 | WIS 5.55 | CHA 5.5 Most Recent Challenge Link to comment
