Aghhh, hi friends! Sorry I've been out for the last couple of weeks. Things have been hectic, which I know isn't a real reason not to be here because things are usually hectic in Raptronland, but I have done a bad job of making the time to be here. And I cannot miss the 10th Anniversary Challenge, agh! So here, I am, with some brief updates and a new challenge!

I'm still your friendly neighborhood flipperdoo, who spends most of her time doing gymnastics, lifting, going out with friends, or actively trying to recover from one or all of the three. I finally snagged a job offer around the start of the year after many months of actively searching and started at the beginning of February, the day after I got back from a spur of the moment trip out to London to visit a very good friend of mine from college. I picked up a life-sapping lower respiratory infection that made me sleep a lot and sound like death, but I'm mostly over it despite some residual lung residue.

What am I doing this challenge? Well it's gymnastics season (oh yes, I compete in gymnastics as a fully grown adult, mostly against college kids), so let's pick all-gymn related goals.

  • Go over the vault - Vault 1x per week, attempt half-on/half-offs at least 3x over the course of the challenge
  • Free the hips - Free hip circles and/or hip circle drills on uneven bars 2x per week, attempt free hip + kip + toe-on connections 2x per week
  • Connect the series - Work on any acro series on beam 2x per week, front walkover ab training 1x per week
  • Condition the body - Conditioning 1x per week. JUST DO SOMETHING.

Where did I come from?

Oh boy, my NF history. My very first challenge, back in the summer of 2013 (oh my god) was about GYMNASTICS TOO. I had just found a cool gymnastics gym that catered mostly to adults and was excited about jumping back into the swing of things. I've been firmly on board this adult gymnastics train since then, honestly. I took a couple of breaks from competition, but it has been a fixture in my life. I also wanted to start lifting back then and it ALSO became part of my regular schedule. Even with injuries, I don't think I've taken more than a consecutive week off since I started and it's because I love it? I have had you guys along with me the whole way. I used to spend a LOT of time in the old IRC channel with a whole NF crew, most of whom don't spend a ton of time on the forums anymore, but some of whom became my lifelong friends. My real life hangs with NF people have included in-house powerlifting meets in Texas, obstacle course races across New England, GORUCK events in Boston, bar visits with folks across the country (and internationally), and introducing me to amazing, local folks I love to spend time with whenever I can like @RisenPhoenix, @CourtnieMarie, @The Tin Man, and even @Knightwatch when we invade his lands.

NF helped me rediscover that it is okay to TRY, it is okay to fall, and it is even okay to fail. I, like many folks on here, suffered a lot from perfectionism and fear of not being great at something as soon as I tried it. This community helped remind me that you can't learn anything if you up and quit at the first signs of struggle, that failure is where growth comes from, that it isn't so bad to fall if you have people to help you get back up. I've learned so very much about myself and what works for me.

What were my very first goals here, though? Let's see.

Quote

I just want to have amazing control over my body, be stronger, look awesome naked, and get booty

😂While legitimate goals that I made great strides toward, I've found that the mindset and mentality gains I've built in my years here have been far greater than any physical ones. I think they will be longer lasting and overall more beneficial to my health than my new booty. And I have you guys to thank for them.

Quick Update from the first meet of the season on Saturday:

  • Vault - I did it. It was weird but fine.
  • Uneven bars - I did it. It was relatively good, but not my best. We can do better.
  • Balance beam - I did my back handspring! This was the only real goal for the whole day. I also fell 3x and didn't do a series, so as a routine overall, it was atrocious, but my excitement is still intact because I met my One Big Goal.
  • Floor exercise - The debut of my new gremlin routine (hence the double bun gremlin hair) was pretty okay. My tumbling wasn't as strong as I wanted it to be and I almost fell on my 3/2 turn, but I am not unhappy with how it went.

Overall, I'd give the performance an 8/10 which is a strong start to the season and leaves plenty of room for growth. Here's a video of the back handspring:

I have a meet in Los Angeles this Sunday. Then the next meets are March 7 and March 28, so two more meets within the span of this challenge and a 3rd in the interim, between-challenges week. Let's get after it. 💪

All da flippies!!!!!  I have always enjoyed seeing your IG posts of gymnastics stuff.  There's one I remember of you in a dress doing a flip or something and it is so cool how the dress flowed while you did it! I remember thinking, that is so off the wall, awesome and mesmerizing that I felt it represented you in video form.

Can't wait to see more awesomeness!

And when I saw you didn't have a challenge up during zero week, for a hot second I thought you'd been kidnapped.

I don't think I've missed a challenge since that one time in like 2014 when I had a strange compulsion to start a Battle Log instead and treated it pretty much how I usually treat my challenge threads, IIRC. Also it was back in the time of the pretty disordered eating. I'm glad we've grown (both mentally and physically) since then, haha.

Day 1.1

Monday, I went to gymnastics practice after having a lazy day off for the federal holiday-- reading, grocery shopping, making a huge batch of delicious enchiladas-- all good things. Practice was largely spent focusing on the issues at the meet. I did a bunch of double salto passes, most of which were unsatisfying to me until I did a nice one in a full floor routine run-through. Balance beam had 5 full routines with back handsprings (and I think I landed all but 1 on the beam as well), but there were other mistakes. I drilled my connected acro series a good number of times but it obviously still needs more help to stay 1) on the beam and 2) connected. Balance beam routines are also exhausting and I always forget that until we're in the swing of things. Speaking of swinging, I finished on uneven bars -- still trying to improve my toe shoots and overall connections. Not a bad practice.

Day 1.2

Squat: 2 x 8 x 195#, 2 x 6 x 225#, 2 x 4 x 245#

Front squat: 5 x 3 x 185#

Bench: 2 x 6 x 120#, 2 x 5 x 135#, 2 x 4 x 140#

Front walkover abs: 3 sets of dying

Lat raises: 4 x 10 x 15#

This was a very chill workout. I am glad front squats are back in my program-- they're challenging in all the right ways, even if my shoulders bruise every time I do them. 🙄After my workout, I picked up a couple of things from the grocery store, ate some of the leftover bomb-ass enchiladas, watched an episode of Cheer (almost in Daytona!), and finished reading Fates and Furies (eh).

Go over the vault - vault 0/1, half-on half-off 0/3

Free the hips - free hip 1/2, toe-on connections 1/2

Connect the series - beam acro 1/2, fwo abs 1/1

Condition the body - conditioning 0/1

Rest of the week

W - deadlifts & drinks

Th - gymnastics

F - maybe eking out some conditioning in the am + flight to Los Angeles in the early evening

S - LA things

S - Gymnastics meet #2 of the season at UCLA!

I also need to throw some laundry in at some point before the trip. And drop off/pick-up some things at my old office... 🤔

Lol. Nice squats and bench. So impressed by the bench, actually. That's a dragon plate bench plus two giant moths. ETA you already know that, but I'm stating the obvious because I'm impressed.

I beg to disagree. Your booty is great and powerful and it will allow you to squat and dance and be awesome when everyone else is sad and decrepit in 50 years time. Of course mindset gains are amazing, but don't underestimate the booty.

CONCUR. honestly I spent most of my life underestimating the booty and am only just now realizing what a gamechanger it is.
