...but never early to rise.

I have two directives for this challenge.  The first is to maintain sanity and faith.  Here I mean faith in the secular sense - keeping hope, perspective, and basic joy in life.  The second is to prevent this time from becoming "the lost months".  These primary goals break down to 5 steps:

1. Run and Hike - get outdoors at least 4 times a week so long as it is safe to do so.  Accumulate 2+ hours of running each week.

2. Strength - do at least 30 minutes of body weight strength training 2-3 times a week. Do at least 4 upper, 4 lower, and 4 core exercises each week.

3. Body Comp - record my weight each morning and my Diet Quality score each night.

4. Stress - don't check the news in the first hour in the morning or within an hour of going to bed.

5. Learning - finish the math text I had forgotten about when I started my full-time position last May.

I originally wrote detailed training plans for these five weeks but I think it is best to keep the mental cost of training low right now.  So this is a loose format that is still enough to keep my fitness improving at its most basic level, but has room to step it up if I am feeling up to it.  I am also hoping to finish my sushi list so I can get started on a new one.

Zero Week - Monday

The plan today was a 10K time trial,  in order to have a starting point to gauge progress this season.  It couldn't be a strict time trial as I don't have access to anything reasonably flat that isn't a dirt trail - and that would not be helpful at all for gauging progress, since how do you compare 63 minutes on snow to 58 minutes on mud?  So I picked a very hilly but paved running trail nearby.  It didn't happen.  This morning my guts loudly expressed their displeasure with last night's takeout and the jostling did not seem wise.

BUT I went anyways to hike the 10K.  And I still did my planned strength session for the day, and even was motivated enough to work on mobility a little via Elements.

It turns out it was a good thing I didn't run.  My road shoes are old and my ankle is a little twingy and sore just from walking on pavement in them.  The local running stores are online only and my current shoe model is no longer being sold, so I will have to cross my fingers and guess on fit when I order a new pair.

My quarantine project today: figuring out if my legs hairs are long enough to practice DIY sugaring.  They aren't.

That sounds like an interesting day. DIY sugaring is fully as random as my home-grown sea monkey farm 🙂

Is there something wrong with me that I don't see anything odd in either of those? 😄 Both totally logical things to be doing at home!

Today was hiking day. My knee and ankle was still twingy from yesterday so I kept it very short. It was important to get out though.  Parks Canada announced today that they will be barring access to all parks indefinitely (i.e. my hiking trails) at midnight tonight. There should still be a few local places to run left open.  If not, I ordered a new pair of road running shoes and will do what I can.

This is the result of a long talking-to I gave myself after initially freaking out at losing my running trails. But it will be okay.

I went with Altra Torin 4. Their trail shoes are like wearing slippers so their road shoes should be comfy too.

Today's quarantine project: starting my tomato seeds.

I had a pair of Altra torins and really liked them. Last time I bought shoes, they didn't have those in my size, so I ended up getting a similar model (escalante) that I also like.

I'm disappointed about all the trail areas and parks closing in various places. I do understand it, but I worry that it will make other areas even more crowded (and not allow people the great mental health outlet of being outside).

That is good to hear! Mec has a great return policy if these don't work out, but it still means losing out on a week or two of running for every pair of shoes I try on when we have to ship them back and forth through the mail.

Same worries here.

Today's plan was to go for a nice long easy run before work.  I am embarrassed about it now, but last night/this morning was rough.  I couldn't sleep and my husband broke quarantine enough to come and sleep on the floor beside the bed so I wouldn't have nightmares.  His presence did help me sleep.  The morning came with a headache and residual grogginess, and I moped in bed until it was time to go to work.  So no running.

I feel better this evening and a coworker had some great suggestions for quiet running trails.  Tomorrow will be a better day.

Take-out sushi was dinner again. :)

I'm sorry you had such a rough night, but that's really sweet. How much longer do you guys have to quarantine like that?

Sorry you had a rough night. Don't be embarrassed , I think we can all relate to having trouble at night, especially in these days.

Couple of things that have helped me are to take a hot bath or this routine from GMB

I'll look into it. Avoiding news at night helps a little but a relaxation routine sounds lovely.

Today's plan was a strength workout, and I tacked on yesterday's run.  The field my coworker suggested is about 4 square miles with deer trails and a really muddy ravine running through it. If you avoid the ravine it is quite nice and I enjoyed myself as I thrashed through the scrubs under a sunny sky.  The grocery store had meat again so I shortened my strength routine and restocked my fridge before work.

A coworker is lending me a candy thermometer to make the sugaring wax tomorrow. Photo evidence of the probable disaster may be taken.

oh boy am I jellin with that description

I love LOVE love wandering on deer trails and through ravines and stuff

stuck at work now for the 5th long day in a row (with another 2 more days)...I have been having horrible cabin fever.

I told my wife that when I get off from work.  the very DAY after.  (its 7 days of working and 7 days of being home); I want to go out and look for wild onions.

I know of a few secret deer trails that head in that direction. ;)

That's funny, I am on the same schedule now too.  Wild onions grow around here, but not until June and they can be hard to find.  A great excuse for a long ramble in the fields!

This morning I went for another jaunt around the deer field.  Spring has officially arrived and the ground was softer than my shoes could handle so my planned 5K easy run turned into a 3K slip and slide.  Still very fun and a good workout.  I was wearing sweat pants and found myself wishing I had worn shorts (though the ears still very much needed to be protected from the cold wind coming down from the snow-covered mountains).

My new running paths wind through the field on the far side of that paved path, though this photo is from later in the year.  Right now there is no green and some snow patches.

Saturday of Zero Week

Today was much chillier than yesterday, but that worked in my favor on my one hour run.  I chose a dirt back road and it would have been horribly muddy if it hadn't frozen over. As it was, the road was very runnable and this is the first time this week I managed to complete my prescibed run.

The crochet project on my sushi list has been languishing because, well, I really don't feel like it! But it needs to get done eventually so I managed to spend about an hour on it during work. It is very slow at work right now.  People are avoiding health centers if they can and Covid hasn't ramped up here yet.

Great that you've found somewhere fun to run. Your picture reminded me of some fields near me that I might venture into next week.

It is a good time to do some local adventuring.
