Chris-Tien's Exile

Recommended Posts

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s exile on Tatooine has always interested me.  A few sources (such as https://screenrant.com/star-wars-obiwan-kenobi-tatooine-exile/) have addressed what “Old Ben Kenobi” was doing between trilogies, but how does one recover mentally and physically from losing nearly everything?  (I’m really hoping that the Kenobi series actually goes forward and doesn’t end up scrapped.)

Thankfully, I have a lot more going for me right now, but I am feeling inspired by Obi-Wan’s exile as we are all surfing the changes the pandemic is triggering.  I am definitely trying to focus on what I have and not what I am missing.  However, the situation here is definitely fluid, and I am planning to make changes as restrictions and shortages increase.

Cardio

  • TThSat: Run (I have a schedule I’ve been working on for my 5K)
  • If I can’t run, I’ll walk/hike (30+ minutes or 2 miles)
  • If I can’t leave the house, I’ll use the stationary bike for 30 minutes

If I can’t bike …..

zoe-washburne-sci-fi-women-tough-firefly

then I’m probably sick and on the couch, watching Firefly

Strength

  • WMF: WOD --- thanks to our fabulous coaches who are still posting daily WODs online in our gym’s app, I can do a WOD every day but Sunday.
  • NerdFitness 20-minute Kettlebell workout

Flexibility/ROM - Daily

  • ROMWOD …. give the 7-day free trial a try
  • Yoga with Adriene (YouTube)

Spirit - Daily

  • Meditation
  • Liturgy of the Hours

Knowledge

  • I’ve been looking at a book that @Tanktimus the Encourager recommended (Stop Walking on Eggshells ….) but am going to read this one first:  Stop Caretaking the Borderline or Narcissist: How to End the Drama and Get On with Life by Margalis Fjelstad  since it seems to focus more on helping the caretaker (me) get out from under the weight of that role. No matter what the diagnosis ….. or lack thereof ….. of certain family members, I can work on my response to odd or dysfunctional behavior.  So, I’m starting there.

And FUN!!!!

I want to do something every day that is interesting.  Thanks to @Elastigirl, I have the freestyle staff spinning video links.  And our community is working on finding ways to help amuse and entertain kids so there will be things to do.

This week, we’re putting teddy bears in windows for the kids who are reading We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.  So far, with the snow, I’ve seen families drive by, pointing out the two bears we have put up for them to find.  We’ll see what next week brings …..

If you had told me five weeks ago that we'd be in THIS place (as a nation) I  would probably have called you crazy.

Living in an isolated, small town, it still seems unreal.  I'm doing my best to stick with the plan, but it's hard.  Hubby is in denial and going to face to face meetings in the large cities.  After 35 years, I've learned that trying to change his mind will only result in his acting out later .... so I let him make his own choices.

As for Obi-Wan Kenobi, I still think that the whole Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker thing was really lame story-telling.  But maybe that story is how Kenobi dealt with the tragedy ... by compartmentalizing.

On the workout front .....

I love the Zombies, Run! app and have tried a few of the other exercise apps that the company puts out.  Lately, I haven't been subscribing, but when they threw together a special app - for free .... working from their homes - to support people working out at home with an apocalypse isolation-themed app, I threw money at them.  If anyone is having trouble coming up with an at home workout, check out their Home Front workouts.

At Home WOD (so happy that our coaches are posting these for us):
20 Gentle Burpees
30 Air Squats
40 Russian Twsits
30 Air Squats
20 Gentle Burpees

Power Snatches
15-13-11 @ 15 lb KB
9-7 @ 20 lb KB

I still need to get a few things set up, like a trial ROMWOD subscription, but I'm pretty well set.

And work .... well, I went in to grade the last assignment that students did using our robots.  Then, I brought home my plants and the headset I'll need to record video lectures, just in case.  After a couple of weeks to too much news, we now seem to have too little.  No one has confirmed that we have a case in our town, and the college hasn't told the faculty to stay home yet.  But I expect it is a matter of time.

One of my favorite motivational videos (and song on my running mix) .....

Report for 3/24

Since we were busy watching the new Miss Fischer movie last night, I didn't post results ....

Cardio: Ran 2.1 miles in 30 minutes.  I went to the local park that has a double looped walking path.  It's nice because the small loop is 0.6 miles and the long piece is 0.9.  Odd numbers, but they add up to 1.5 miles.  So two rounds is about a 5K.  Lots of people were out running or walking but keeping up the social distancing effort as best we can.

Strength:  Not today.

Spirit: Meditated on positive affirmations.

Flexibility: Did 20 minutes of beginner yoga with the help of our cat.

Reading/Knowledge: nada.  I'm still getting set up with equipment for working and working out at home.

Fun: nothing in particular.  We couldn't get the new Miss Fischer movie to stream on Monday (our anniversary), but I did see it mysteriously pop up in our Amazon feed first thing Tuesday.  So, we started it and will finish today.

As of March 25th, I won't be able to get into my office.  I hope I have what I need to teach from home, but it is going to be slow and frustrating for both professor and students.

I know!!!  I always, ALWAYS get sick after taking a plane anywhere.

That being said, I sure hope that we can take our train trip to Glacier National Park this summer.  I don't care that I can't fly to Montreal for a conference (it's going to be held virtually), but I really NEED this vacation.

15 Min AMRAP:
15 KB Swings (20 lb)
15 (each) Bent over rows (15 lb)
15 Glute Bridges

We have joined the sections of the world that look like we're containing the virus because we are not testing people who are almost certainly ill with COVID-19.

Today, I'm going to get a long walk, stretch out my too-tight hips, and buy some more gym equipment ..... between prepping for "classes" that start next week.

Have you had a chance to play with your saber/staff yet?

I haven't put it together yet.  Now that we know ---- more or less ---- what the expectations and limitations for the rest of the term will be like, I've been revising classes.  Bleh!!  This weekend is going to be rainy; so I think I'll get started on the staff.

I signed up for the trial of ROMWOD and like it.  I'm doing the introductory sequence, and yesterday was working on legs ..... that feels a LOT better today already.  Between the walk and the stretching, the tightness is gone.  And .... no foot cramps.  Upper body is tight, however.  I'm not sure if I'm going to do the CrossFit WOD today or put it off to tomorrow.

I already feel discipline slipping away .......

Prep week went pretty well, although social distancing is starting to get old.  I knew it would because I really like to see people and get out and move around, and teaching in this format is going to be rough on everyone.  But I am prepped for tomorrow .... lectures with text transcripts are uploaded and ready.  Now to start re-writing Wednesday's materials.

I have been channelling the Doctor from the Year of the Slow Invasion episode.  I polished all of the leather in the house: boots, jackets, gloves.  I made a sand & oil bucket for my gardening tools and proceeded to clean and oil them in preparation for spring.  Have been planting containers of cold-weather vegetables (beets, carrots, spinach, lettuce, onions ....)

I went out and got some dumbbells.  They were already picked over, and the heaviest that I could find in a matched set were 8 pounds.  No medicine balls were left, but I got a 15 pound slam ball, which can also substitute for a sandbag at this point in my training.  And, @Elastigirl, I made my staff!!  I haven't decided if I want tape in the middle yet.  I never taped the middle section of my long bo staff.  So I'll play with it and can always change my mind.  At that price.  I can make several .....

I already had jump ropes and an exercise bike for cardio if we have to stay indoors (and weather being what is is .... we might get shut in my Mother Nature).

Since I don't have barbells, I'd wanted an ab roller, but those were sold out already.  I added a yoga block to my mat and have started the ROMWOD series.  Most are short and are actually a great way for me to discipline myself to stretch after a workout.  So, ready on the exercise front.

We've stocked up on a few things like rice and beans and soups.  Generally, stores are keeping up with most consumables (except occasionally for TP and eggs). Now, I just want to be able to stay in if we come down with the virus.

Cardio
I got in 3 runs during the week!!  More like jogs, although when running outside, my pace is actually faster than on a tread mill.  Longest was 2.1 miles.

People are generally maintaining distance between groups, although it was hard to keep my distance from some friends that I spotted out on the walking path on Thursday.  We chatted loudly across the parking lot.

Strength

Two of the at home CrossFit WODs.

Our coaches are awesome and posting WODs that take little equipment or can be modified.  The gym is also posting suggested bodyweight workouts.

Flexibility

I did yoga one day.  Adriene is great, but it didn't seem to be hitting what I needed.  I think the ROMWOD site is more targeted and is going to help more in the long run, although the basic components are the same, they are picking the muscles that really need the help after my workouts.

Spirit

Some meditation and some time spent in my Common Prayer (by Ordinary Sacred Days) prayerbook.

Knowledge

I started reading the Stop Caretaking ..... book and read through the first 3 chapters at a sprint.  After my parents divorced (40 years ago ...), my therapist had me reading the co-dependent literature, but it never really seemed to fit what happened in my family of origin or in my subsequent life.  This book .... wow.  Makes me squirm sometimes, but the chapter on family roles and the dysfunctional drama was eye opening.  It also has explained why many of my attempts at getting out of the Caretaker role have only had short term success.

Fun

Well, working on having some fun despite all of the bad news and stress.  And then trying not to feel guilty about that ....

I made my short staff.  I'll get a picture of my workout corner posted ..... might have to give up and reinstall Instagram on my phone.

Hubby and I upgraded our World of Warcraft games and subscribed for a month.  I don't think we'll all be out of the woods by the end of the month, and if necessary, we'll keep playing through the plague and the cold & rainy spring.

I'm starting to eye all of the virtual museums and botanical garden tours online.

A slam ball sounds fun.

It is very satisfying.  A little weird because you expect a ball to bounce, but it doesn't.  It just smooshes.  Very good way to get out frustrations!!!

Oh wow ..... a few minutes of working on the basic staff flow routine, and my arm was shaking.  It's going to be fun, but .... wow, what a good arm workout.

No church services; so I did the morning prayers for the day from Common Prayer.  Churches in the area are trying to do virtual services, but I'm not connecting with any of them.  Our minister lost her father to a sudden heart attack just before the pandemic was declared.  She's taking the time she needs for her and her family's recovery, and we all support her in this ... and we're doing our best to take care of each other.

Did my saber practice and then a much-needed ROM WOD.

Did some reading in my Stop Caretaking book ....

And did a lot of work.  I have a double handful of students who haven't reported in yet, and I hope they are just slow to get back from our odd break.

Good night, all.  Stay safe and healthy.

I can do the staff workout for longer now that I've been doing it for a bit. And it's now more wrist intense than shoulder intense.

Nice that you were able to start the day with prayers.  Our church is streaming our services. It's a bit spotty, it keeps stalling, but it was nice to have a bit of a service

Yay for cool workout stuff. The uni work thing sounds like crap. I feel sorry for all my Uni lecturer friends at the moment. I feel extra sorry for my own lecturers, because they have to mark my drivel as well. :P

Staff/Saber training sounds cool, what source are you using for this? I know a lot of re-enactors are posting lots of training videos on YouTube which is awesome. At the end of this there will be lots of fresh training material around.

Glad to hear you are managing well.

Right?!?!?!?  I had scoped out the options .... at Walmart, of all places, because that's what we have in a small town .... on Friday, and by Sunday when I went with hubby, the shelves were almost bare.

We can't play tennis (public and college courts are closed) or golf.  I'm considering getting a pickleball set so we can use the basketball/tennis court in the park behind us.

If this was the dead of winter .... it would be easy to workout in the basement, read a ton, play World of Warcraft, and watch movies.  But .... Spring and the nice weather calls like gold to a pirate!
