Cabin Fever feat. Raptron

Hi! Y'all know what's up. It's another 5 week challenge in the neighborhood.

My work extended the mandated WFH policy until May 4 (though we all know it may go longer than that). This challenge, I will be trying to establish a good baseline for spending the majority of my time at home: keeping up my productivity, trying to build well-established boundaries so I don't work too much, creating a (temporary) new normal for workouts, and finding the methods of socialization that work best for me in these weird times.

I haven't really NAILED any of these things yet, so until I figure out what works best, I'll be doing weekly / daily goals instead of overarching ones. 👍

I think I am going to continue marking this as WFH weeks instead of by challenge number weeks, just for my own COVID-19 diary. 😜

WFH Day 2.1

We had a pretty crummy day planned in terms of weather, so I went out for a run during lunch because I certainly don't have the dedication to jog in the snow/sleet/rain when it's something I don't want to be doing even a little bit. My jog was actually pretty speedy -- I was planning to do 40 minutes or 4 miles and I got to 4 miles around ~35 minutes so I felt like that was good enough. My calves were EXTREMELY tight during this run and directly after, so I'm trying to get more calf stretching/rolling into my life.

I also did my daily handstands, 25 chin-ups through the day (including two sets of 6, which I don't think I've managed in a while!), and joined a Hangout with some of my team members for a stretching circle when we would normally have Monday practice. 🤸‍♀️I finished the night reading Open by Andre Agassi for a couple of hours. It's not my usual, which is partially why I am reading it.

I wrote out some goals for the week in my planner yesterday when I was contemplating the minimum I wanted out of the week. I settled on 3 jogs, one "other" running workout like the stadium or sprints, daily handstands, 2 yoga sessions, and "a real effort" to do two leg workouts. It looks like a lot when I write it out here, but keep in mind I am used to 12 hours of training a week plus I'm a walking commuter who walks 4-5 miles per day in normal life. This feels like a band-aid on top of all of that and I'm trying my best not to see it as hemorrhaging gains.

An extended rest might do you some good. Can't go hard all the time. Use it as an opportunity to treat yourself :)

Here for the goals! They seem like perfect ones for this time, especially keeping them flexible to define weekly.

I also like the idea of documenting in WFH home weeks, that really is the defining thing right now. I'm trying to keep a record of what's going on and what I'm feeling just to look back on through notes and photos during this time.

WFH Day 2.2

Much better day productivity-wise, but still kind of ramping up to where things should be. I decided my new work setting really needed a new task management system, so I spent a lot of the afternoon doing that, which really helped me refocus and is already paying off today. I went for a 30 minute walk in the sun during lunch.

After the work day was over, my bff and I went to the stadium. I did 20 sections as my cardio/warm-up and then switched to doing more strength/PT with very controlled step-ups and side walks down/up for glute med and hip flexor work. I also did 5 sets of push-ups and 5 sets of pistol squats at the end, so whatever, I'm calling that a strength workout AND my alt. cardio. If I manage more sprints or something too, cool, but this totally counts. We picked up tacos from our usual place that's switched to take-out, ate them, and that was that. I did more handstands, paged through a cookbook I got for Christmas to flag some interesting recipes to maybe pursue over the pandemic, and read until midnight or so.

Handstands: 2/7

Cardio: 1/3 jogging, 1/1 "other"

Strength: 1/2

Yoga: 0/2

Today will have: 1) making scones, 2) going for a walk, 3) handstands, 4) pull-ups, 5) a short jog, 6) D&D

WFH Day 2.3

My cousin lives a couple of miles away and she called me while she was out walking her dog to scoop me up for a lunchtime walk and chat. I also went to the store to pick up flour and a few other things because I was very ready to start making scones when it turned out, I had finished off my flour with the pie I made the week before. Oops. 🙊

Work was very productive, actually. My manager seems to like my work, the team I'm on is neat, my grandboss is happy with what I've been doing, etc. It's a funny time to transition to full time remote when I'm still finding my best methods of communication with the teams, but it's a funny world right now, anyway. I'm pretty busy but am not sure if anything I'm doing matters (DOES ANYTHING MATTER) but that's actually kind of nice -- it makes it feel more leisurely.

I went on a terrible 2.5 mile jog, haha. I didn't want to do it, but I still did at least. ✌️ I also did 20 pull-ups through the day.

My scones turned out pretty well, though I need to figure out another way to incorporate the honey/more honey for a standalone scone. Right now, they're best cut in half with honey drizzled on em.

Our D&D crew finished the dungeon crawl they were on and picked up some neat new loot. I was hoping that would be the end of my co-DM's section so I could run more again, but he's already got more plans about where they arrive. We're collaborating, but I've been itching to fully run sessions again. He's got a lot more time on his hands right now (he's out of work), so I'd rather he get to enjoy the time spent planning than just like, placate my ego. We'll see.

Maybe that's more reason to run a live, short adventure for NF folks who are interested. It would be live over Roll20.net and Google Hangout video chat. I'd probably try to make two 4-hour sessions max. I know there is another game going right now, but this would be a bit different. ✌️ I'm thinking maybe starting up like... next weekend? April 4 or 5. 🤔

Is your team/job/company used to working from home or has it been an entirely new experience for everyone? It's taken almost a week and a half for my people to figure out proper conference call etiquette. We're all used to our meeting rooms or walking into each others office. I've tried to get them to use our IM system instead of flooding my inbox with quick questions, but no dice so far.

Ahhh that's really great to hear! It's definitely weird to figure out the adjustment, but I almost feel as or more connected to my coworkers than I did working in the office these days.

My new gig is at a SaaS company with various global offices, so we are very good at collaborating at a distance and that part isn't too bad! I'm still just figuring out what are the best channels to let people know when things are updated or when I have questions to ask. It's more of a "being new" thing than a WFH thing, though I was getting a lot of things answered before just by like musing aloud or bugging my colleague at her desk.
