Ranger Hal Takes a Step Back

And not just so that I’m 6 feet away from everyone. I think I tried to do too many things at once last challenge. It didn’t look like too much, but I didn’t take into account my climbing class (lectures, extra hikes, skills practice, etc.) and gym climbing with friends that took up the whole evening a couple of nights a week (going straight from work and getting home at 10pm was not uncommon). But now the plague and the resulting stay-at-home order have shut down just about everything that would keep me away from home in the evenings. Also, there were a few things that I wanted to maintain, but not track, last challenge and they didn’t happen as much as I wanted. So, for most of this challenge, I’m taking a step back to some of the goals I had previously.

This Challenge:

1) Morning walk every day. Optionally swap running for walking a couple of days a week (maybe a 5k training program).

2) Workout 3 times per week. Hiking and climbing can count for up to two of these workouts, assuming the stay-at-home order is lifted before the end of the challenge. SAR missions can count as long as I get a reasonable amount of exercise. Walking the (unfortunately flat) trail in my neighborhood with a heavy pack will also count.

3) Wash dishes and clean something every day

4) Eat vegetables every day

5) Something creative or garden related every day. Doesn’t have to be much. Color in a coloring book, sew a quarter of a quilt square, pull a few weeds, whatever.

Week 0, Day 4 Wednesday

Morning walk: (1/4) Short walk

Workout: (1/3)

Dishes/Clean: (2/5) Washed dishes and washed PB pretzel jars (i.e. clearing off the kitchen floor)

Vegetables: (2/5) Salad

Creative/Garden: (2/5) Cut out pattern and fabric for mask

Went for a short walk in the morning. I hadn't been to that bridge in a while, maybe since just after the floods. It looks like what used to be a main channel has become a side channel. There's still water in it, but most of the water is going the other direction. Rivers are dynamic and they change the land. A meeting I was supposed to go to tonight was held using Zoom. First time I've done that and it worked well. I'm not sure why that surprised me. Well, not that it worked. Just that I didn't have trouble joining in, even a headset I rarely use and no video. Dinner was salad with honey mustard dressing and dried cranberries, teriyaki salmon, and rice. I cut out the fabric for a face mask. Since I gave the pack of N95 masks I bought after the wildfires last summer to a local hospital, I figure I should probably have at least a fabric mask on hand for myself. If it turns out okay, maybe I'll see about making more to donate.

Monday I had a meltdown after the state-wide stay at home order was announced. At the time, I thought it was because Covid-19 was finally affecting my work and I was sure I'd have to work from home. (It turns out my office is considered "essential" for some reason and is still open, and it's easy to stay far enough away from other people. I rarely see more than a couple of people a day there anyway.) Now, I'm not so sure my meltdown was Covid-19 related. I think it had more to do with it being a change at work. There have been a lot of changes in the last year and a half since my company was acquired by another company. And the changes aren't done because we're moving to a new office building at the end of the year. But the fact that I continue to have occasional work-related meltdowns makes me think I'm not dealing with it all very well on my own.

Workout: (2/3) Workout 3A

Dishes/Clean: (3/5) Washed dishes and did laundry

Scary how the grocery store run I just did was probably the most dangerous thing I've done all week. Hopefully I'm good for about two weeks now.

Week 0, Day 7 Saturday

Morning walk: (4/4) Well, it wasn't morning, but I'm okay with that on the weekend

Workout: (3/3) 5.5 mile walk with heavy pack

Dishes/Clean: (4.5/5) Washed dishes but didn't clean anything else

Vegetables: (5/5) Green beans and carrots in soup

Creative/Garden: (5/5) Quarter quilt square.

Week 1, Day 1 Sunday

Morning walk: (1/7) Walk, also not in the morning

Workout: (1/3) Workout 3B

Dishes/Clean: (1/7) Washed dishes and more dishes. So many dishes. Also wiped off the stove top.

Vegetables: (1/7) Broccoli

Creative/Garden: (1/7) Cooking

I stayed home all weekend. That is very weird. I'm always going to church or training or some kind of outdoor adventure. I did do some walking on the trail by my house. Earlier this week, we didn't think church would happen this Sunday, but a couple of days ago we received permission to have it with four people so it could be livestreamed  (1 priest, 1 server, 1 chanter, and 1 person to run the video), so I had it running on the TV next to my prayer corner. A very strange experience, but we do what we have to. Today I made vegan mac and cheese. It creates a lot of dishes. I also made banana muffins. I like having them around because that way I don't eat as many packaged bars for breakfast. I think I'm going to count the cooking as my creative thing for today because there was so much of it. I was thinking about doing a workout tonight, but it's getting late.

Edit: I decided to do the workout anyway.

Glad you were able to do church. We had our church livesteamed. It was just our pastor and a pianist. Very weird, but at last nice we got to do that.

Week 1, Day 2 Monday

Morning walk: (2/7) 1 mile walk

Workout: (1/3)

Dishes/Clean: (2/7) Washed dishes and a couple more peanut butter pretzel jars.

Vegetables: (2/7) Green beans and carrots in soup

Creative/Garden: (2/7) Coloring book

I think I had a problem with peanut butter pretzel jars. There used to be about eight of them and now there's only one left on the floor and it's holding stuff, so that's okay. Now I just have to remember to put out the recycling this week and they'll all be gone!

Ugh. There are so many weeds in the one garden bed and they have lots of roots. It's going to take a lot of work to get that one cleaned up enough to plant veggies in.

Sleep can lead to creative things, so I’d say that was a wise choice :)

Week 1, Day 7 Saturday

Morning walk: (7/7) long walk

Workout: (4/3) long walk with heavy backpack

Dishes/Clean: (7/7) Washed dishes and put away laundry

Vegetables: (7/7) zucchini

Creative/Garden: (6/7) chopped the grass until the battery ran out of power

So maybe the shoes I've been wearing to go walking aren't that good, at least not for long walks with a heavy pack. Last time, my feet just hurt. This time they hurt sooner and I ignored it. Now I have a blister on the bottom of my foot. Oops. I've also had some mild digestive stuff going on today. I'm wondering if the sweet potato lentil thing I made isn't making my stomach happy. I hope that's not the case because I still have a lot of it left. Maybe I can eat it in smaller portions. I guess that also means I need to make more food tomorrow so I can have some variety.

I think it's been a pretty good week.

Ack! It's Monday. It feels like a Monday.

Week 2, Day 2 Monday

Morning walk: (2/7) sort of walk

Workout: (0/3)

Dishes/Clean: (2/7) Washed dishes and cleaned up after pancake experiment

Vegetables: (2/7) green beans

Creative/Garden: (1/7)

SAR mission last night and although I didn't do a lot of walking distance wise, I'm going to count it as this morning's walk because it technically was morning and being up that late meant I didn't get a walk in before work. No creative thing tonight. I need more sleep.

I tried to fry some of my sweet potato lentil dish into something like pancakes, but it didn't really work. I think there was too much moisture in it, so it didn't stick together when I tried to flip it over. Maybe I could mix in some flour to make it behave more like pancake batter, but that's an experiment for another day.

Yes, I'm on one of the local volunteer search and rescue teams. It was really nice to see the mountains last night, even if I didn't do much hiking. The moon was out and the snow on the tops of the mountains was beautiful.

Well, not me personally, but yes, we found the person. One team went into the field and my team stayed near base (while maintaining social distancing) in case the team in the field needed us to bring in extra equipment (they didn't).
