Sadly, I’m a big ol’ introverted hermit, so life really hasn’t changed much for me. I work from home, don’t really go anywhere or do anything other than the gym. And because of this, I was fine until my gym had to shutdown. I’ve had a really hard time for the last several years getting my head back into the game. When I found this gym and my coach, I finally got my head right. I was consistent, never missing a workout, and for the first time in my life, I was enjoying the heck out of working out. I’ve been so depressed and worried that I will fall back into bad habits that, ironically, I've fallen back into bad habits.

This challenge will be about little things to get me out of my funk. Because it is SO hard to do ANYTHING when I’m in a hole of depression.

I so feel you on the self-fulfilling prophesy of bad habits! And it is so hard to do anything when you’re depressed -.- I like the simplicity of the goals, life is so crazy right now, I think K.I.S.S. has to be the rule of the day!

Is HZD your main jam right now, or what are you playing mostly?

I’m a one game at a time kind of girl. I just (mostly) finished Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Still have side quests to do - that game is SO AWESOME. Now I’m all about HZD. I’m not very far, but I love it. Any game where I get to be a bad ass female makes me happy. What are you playing now? Honestly, I just upgraded from my SNES (yes, it still works and I still play it. 🤣), so these fancy gaming systems are still new to me. #OldLady

Is this Horizon Zero Dawn?   I think the main chick is voiced by Ashly Burch, who has been an amazing guest on Critical Role and also voices Sasha from Attack on Titans.   I don't have a PS4, but the game had my curiosity because of the voice actor.

I hear ya on the gym thing.   It's been hard for me shifting to working out at home and without the office gym stuff we have.    Nothing is 'as good as my routine' was, but I am really trying to just keep at it.   Every day I do something feels better than a day I didn't.   And that has helped me push past the 'meh jammies' mood that whispers in my ear every single time lol.

You are stronger than your old habits my friend.  I've SEEN you badass through them.   Hold tight to that hero cape you've earned!   Put it on and soar!

Hi! Welcome to my sh!t show. :D I'm trying to do something more useful than talk about and play video games with my life (and challenge). We'll see how that goes. :) I'm in the US - Nashville, to be exact. And you?

Hey, girl, hey! It is Horizon Zero Dawn. My wife and I have been wondering who the main character was modeled after and who did her voice. We haven't actually bothered to look it up, though. Hahaha. What do you game on? xBox? PC? You know my story about jumping from xBox to PS4. Before I made the jump, several of my coworkers were on me to get one. They were telling me all about the "only for Playstation" games. Besides the wife pushing me over the edge, I decided I had to play The Last of Us (before the sequel comes out). I love, love, love Ashley Johnson (she's all over Critical Role, too) and she voiced one of the characters of that game. It's such a good game. The story is fabulous.

Tell me about Attack on Titans. I've been meaning to ask for some game recs. Up until now, I haven't had a whole lot of time to explore. I prefer games where I can be a badass female. Got any of those? Also, what are your favs?

It fell off, but I found it. I've superglued it around my neck.

I’m also a one game at a time person! I tried the original AC and found it really repetitive, so you find Odyssey is better?

I’m still doing the Frozen Wilds content on HZD, and...I’ve recently started playing Overcooked...it’s so stressful/fun 😹 The next game is going to be A Way Out. It’s an online co-op game, so my husband and I are going to play that, since he’s stuck in Ireland and I’m stuck in the States.

Nothing wrong with SNES! XBOX360 was the first console I really played on, before that I was PC, now that I’ve gone Playstation I doubt I’d ever go back to xbox!

PC primary, XBOX for just a few games like Assassins Creed, or anything by Supergiant games.

This is actually an anime.  A really grim and awesome one with lots of plot twists and action!   She [Ashly Burch] voices one of the Scout Regiments persons (Main side character) who got the nickname potato girl.     Ashly Burch is the main character in HZD.   And she also has had a bunch of cameos on Critical Role and I love her.    Ashley Johnson, ALSO ALSO. ❤️   Obviously from Last of Us, (many of the CR peeps voiced some part or another in that game) - but did you know she sang the cover and they had to hire a singing coach to teach her how to sing worse for the song.   Hahah!

As for game recs:    spoilered because I got to rambling

Spoiler

I picked up and finished Greedfall, with about 70 hours in it.    It reminds me of early days Dragon Age.  It's a very small company that is just trying its hand at story rich RPGs.   I think they have potential!  It isnt super polished, there are some 'glitchy' moments (even AAA games get those, so no points lost for that) and the story is a little predictable but I still really enjoyed it.     I've actually got a project where I will be making a video game music video of that song, so I can show you a clip I really enjoyed...  It is modeled to have choices that matter, and hey you can romance people!

If you haven't played the Supergiant games, they are freaking amazing, and also shorter and ... more like scrollers/puzzle games but they are narrated and have story to them.

Bastion

Transistor

Pyre

Hades (This one is just finishing up early access I think, and I haven't played it yet.  But I will.)

Obviously, Dragon Age and Mass Effect series.   Commander Shephard (Fem Shep) is the greatest female bad ass of the entire game world!!!

Divinity Original Sin 2 - Play as Lohse.  OMG her story had me so freaking wrapped into that game!  I felt like I had this awesome character and a DM was running me through my own personal D&D story.   Super awesome.    (Dunno if that is on PS4 though.)

Plague Tale Innocence - You play as a badass young woman helping her kid brother through this grim world.  It's sadly very short, but it is hands down the most beautiful game I've played.   The characters are fun, the animations are spotless.

Also, dating myself here, but as a kid, I had the biggest crush on the Greatest American Hero haha.

I've tried other AC's, but didn't really care for them. I was hooked on Odyssey right away. The graphics are amazing and I love anything to do with ancient Greece. There's even a tour of Greece you can take that's outside of the game.  I've completed the main HZD quest, and have just made my way to the Frozen Wilds. I'll have to check out Overcooked. :)

Wow, so I know about that song, but not the story behind it. :) She's a fabulous singer - her family is wicked talented! Thank you for the recs. I'm going to look into them.

I briefly looked at your challenge and youtube channel (I so suck at this forum thing) and that VR game you're playing looks like so much fun. I'm actually thinking about getting it (and all the stuff to go with it), but I don't know much about VR and I need more info before I drop that many dollars. Can you tell me about it? Are there any other VR games you play/you have heard about from your friends, etc? I don't have many resources when it comes to this stuff and the gaming stores are currently closed.... hahaha (cries).

I was really hoping you would get the Greatest American Hero reference. I was pretty sure you would since we're the same age. I freaking loved that show so much.

Week 2 Wrap Up

There was some improvement this week, but I am still struggling.

Food

I ate all the bad food all the time. I ate junk food, ordered out, and didn't plan or prepare meals at all, and I feel it. I feel terrible mentally, physically, even psychologically.

Fitness

  • 10 laps around the house at least 3x a day - Not every day, but did do it on some days. Not sure how many

  • If it’s not raining, go for a walk (even if it’s short) - For the first time in a long time, it didn't rain all week. I didn't take advantage of it. GAH!! So frustrated.

  • Strength training 2x a week - I'm not enjoying the bodyweight workouts, but I did them. So there's that.

Life

  • Do assigned daily chore - Did pretty well with this. If I missed a day, I made it up. All chores completed for the week.

  • Mindfulness - meditation at least once a day. None. And it shows

  • Gaming/TV - only allowed once cleaning and fitness goals are accomplished for the day There's been way too much gaming

For this next week, I'm going to drop the bar as low as it can go and break down the basics even further. AND if I can accomplish all of this week's goals, I get a t-shirt prize!!

image.png.7cf6a92f76688ef59998167ef404fdd8.png

It has come to bribing myself to do basic human tasks.

I made a chart to keep track

I have a big bad ass gaming PC, so I went with the Rift S and I love it.   Thankfully, I got to try it at a friends house first!   FPS's make me sick, so I assumed I couldn't do VR.   At least with Beat Saber, it is absolutely no problem.    I haven't tried any other games yet, but there is one called Moss, that you play as a hero mouse that you help adventure around and the soundtrack is amazing and it looks absolutely adorable.  That might be my first venture into other VR games.

I know others who play off of the PS4's VR and have good luck with it... dangit, who was it that was over on my thread and just did that last challenge.   I will have to look back!  (So many people chime in on the Beat Saber stuff haha.)

OMG I LOVE THAT CHART!

AND I LOVE THAT T-SHIRT!

Girl, you can do it.  Sometimes you gotta just start at the base line.  Get some success on a few base line things, and let those feel goods help fuel the next thing ya add in.  You can do it.   And now is the time for gentle self encouragement.  (And bribes. Bribes are great!)   But definitely not beating oneself up!   I will beat up the self that beats up the self, you hear me? ;)

So, I did it! I got the VR set up and played Beat Saber tonight. Boy, howdy! That was so much fun!!! And exhausting. I have very little hand eye coordination and even worse reaction time.

My wife got Moss. I'm excited to play it.

The bribe and chart are working well so far. The only blank box is my chore for today (clean guest bathroom), but I have a good excuse (see below) and I will do it tomorrow.

Today I got a VR setup for my PS4, as well as Beat Saber and a couple other VR Games. After getting everything put together and doing my workout, my wife and I ended up playing Beat Saber the rest of the night. And since strength training was all arms, I'm already feeling the pain. I'm also looking forward to playing some more tomorrow. :D

Chart is looking good, except for today's blank square. I will fill it in tomorrow. BEFORE I start the playing of video games.

So, I did it! I got the VR set up and played Beat Saber tonight. Boy, howdy! That was so much fun!!! And exhausting. I have very little hand eye coordination and even worse reaction time.

My wife got Moss. I'm excited to play it.

YESSSSS!

It is so so tiring!  Honestly.   Once you get a bit better and work up to the faster paced songs and levels, you will burn cals like crazy!  I am so dang addicted.  I feel like I've started a new cult following in NF.   Like, NFBS'ers!  YEAAAH.  We should make a thread!

Good job on the chart and bribes!  Yay!  I see a shirt in your future!   Great job girlfriend!     Tell me how Moss is!

We totally should. I'm really bad at it, but I'd still hang out. I'm so sore and I had to tell my wife not to let me play today so I can rest. Hahaha

Moss is SO GOOD. The graphics are unreal. I got a screenshot, but, er, I don't know how to save them/transfer them from the PS4. I'll have to figure that out.

Or, I'll just go back to my uncomplicated SNES. :D

Week 3 Wrap Up

Much better this week. Seems like baby steps and bribes worked.

Food

I tracked all food every day. My choices were better, but not perfect. Mindful eating was 100% better. I'll take it.

Fitness

  • 10 laps around the house at least 3x a day - Not every day. The days I missed were days that I did 20/30/60 min of Beat Saber.

  • If it’s not raining, go for a walk (even if it’s short) No walks, but it's been either raining or super hot.

I've been doing this at night before I go to bed and I've been sleeping so much better

  • Gaming/TV - only allowed once cleaning and fitness goals are accomplished for the day Check. Helping that gaming is part of fitness goals now.

I earned a t-shirt prize!! I shall place my order tonight.

This week I will start focusing on staying below my calorie goal. I also made a general move column to cover laps/walks/Beat Saber/Other Stuff.

Again, bribing myself with a T-shirt.

I have to do this as well.  I look forward to tomorrow's Beat Saber day though!  Woot woot!

Girl you rocked this week!   Also - Beat Saber, I would say, definitely equates to or exceeds energy output from a walk, so maybe just say that goal is 'move' (That's what I do.  Don't matter how I move, just move!)    Great job my friend.

And I am so so so happy to see you updating here.  Your threads always make me smile!!

Week 4 Wrap Up

This week went pretty well. I completed all of my goals and got another shirt.

Food

  • Track food 6/7 days - 7/7
  • Stay under daily calorie limit 6/7 days -  4/6 I went over my calories (not by much) a couple days, but I still ended the week 1000 calories under, so I'm not too worried about it.

Fitness

  • Move  - 3/7 30 min of Beat Saber.

  • Strength training 2x a week 2/2

Life

  • Do assigned daily chore - Aside from cleaning the cat boxes on schedule, I did everything else today. It's all done, so it counts.

  • Mindfulness - meditation at least once a day. I've gone back to the mindful eating meditation series as I've been finding myself wanting to snack and eat all the freaking time. It helps so much.

  • Gaming/TV - only allowed once cleaning and fitness goals are accomplished for the day Check. Helping that gaming is part of fitness goals now.

  • Bonus: I paid off a credit card!

I was finally able to find some resistance bands (still can't find any dumbbells), so I'm looking forward to some variety in my strength training routines.

Challenge Wrap Up

Skipping the last week's wrap up and jumping straight to the challenge wrap up. We spent the last couple of days pretending that we were in "Little House on the Prairie" after some wicked storms came through and dropped a tree on our fence, blew our roof off, and left us without power for a day or so. Because a pandemic and murder hornets aren't enough, we need to throw in (another) destructive storm. Gee, thanks.

With that said, food for the last few days has been either take out or snack foods and I haven't bothered to track because the world is ending so who cares

giphy.gif

Food

  • Don’t mindlessly eat junk food This went well. Didn't mindlessly eat, even when bad food was there

    • Don’t buy junk food Some junk food was bought, but at least not mindlessly eaten :)

  • Meal prep This didn't go as well as I wanted, but I managed to have food most days and not have to order out because there was nothing available

    • If the wife isn’t feeling like participating in the good food, let her do her thing.

    • Don’t rely on her to cook (usually her job because I’m not any good at it and I hate it)

  • Track food in LoseIt everyday. Minus the last few days this went as planned. I even ended up tracking food on my free day out of habit (WHAT?)

    • Be mindful of macros, but not anal

    • One free day as long as weekly calorie limit is still in a deficit.

Fitness

  • 10 laps around the house at least 3x a day

  • Move 2 times a week The above changed when I found Beat Saber <angels chorus> Best thing that could have happened to me. Thanks, @Starpuck! ❤️

  • If it’s not raining, go for a walk (even if it’s short) None of these

  • Strength training 2x a week Did all my scheduled workouts

    • Keep scheduled gym days W/F

    • Programmed workouts

Life

  • Do assigned daily chores Chores completed

    • Chore list to follow

  • Mindfulness - meditation at least once a day. Probably more. Really need some calming right now. Meditation most nights before bed

  • Gaming/TV - only allowed once cleaning and fitness goals are accomplished for the day Check

  • Bonus - Paid off a credit card

I'm supposed to be getting with my coach this week to go over a new workout/eating plan and then am going to build my challenge around it. Her house got hit in the storms, too, so I may just be winging it.

So glad you enjoy the Beat Saber!!    You did a very nice job this challenge navigating through some major things!     Don't sell yourself short, you persisted gloriously!   OooOoooh, I like the sound of that.
