Terah - Survival of the fittest

Terah

Recommended Posts

So I've been sick, my whole family has been sick. The boys just 24 hours, and after that they were full of energy again. My husband and I were sick for about a week and we're still coughing.

Right now my fitness level is pathetic: I'm out of breath when I go to the attic. So first order of business this challenge is to get my energy back.

My appetite is on an all time low too, which isn't helping in the energy department.

My goals this challenge are:

- Listen to my body and eat what I crave

- Move! I'm starting with a short walk every day. When I think I can handle more I'll add other stuff in

Here for the walking! It's such a fundamental, and important, and powerful thing to do.

True! It's how I got back to exersising after giving birth, and I  think it'll do me a lot of good now.

Was it Covid?

Probably. I'm not eligable for testing, but I had all the sympthoms. And I had the flu shot in november, so chances that it was just the flu are slim.

I walked twice yesterday! Just a small distance (700 meters), but it left me feeling really tired. So I guess that was a good workout.

Today I walked a bit further and caught some pokemon with my boys. Doing groceries is weird now. There are only a certain number of people allowed in the store, so I can't bring the boys. But I'm having most of the groceries delivered, which feels weird, because the grocery store is only 400 meters from my home...

I feel you on the groceries, it's so weird! Although it's not as strict here in the east of the Netherlands as in most other parts (probably it's the lower population density?), getting groceries while keeping 1.5m distance from everybody is nearly impossible. As soon as a person is standing in an aisle, they're effectively blocking it for other people. It's a good puzzle, and it makes sure I don't go there very often for "vanity" groceries like chocolate and cookies. The only product that's still missing is flour, which is annoying since I was just out of flour when this all started. Why would you stockpile flour anyway? There's plenty of bread-mix left. Does everyone want to bake cookies with their children, and bake pancakes, now that the children are not at school?

Weird right? A lot of people have too much time on their hands and start baking I think. At least that's what my mom and sister are doing :D I, on the other hand have less time because I need to be a teacher for my boys...

Yay for walking! Even if it's just 700 m :)

I went shopping today. We're still low on toilet paper in the stores here. We have enough at home for a week or two more. Hopefully everyone else have gotten what they need by then, so it's some left for us...

Toilet paper is still mostly sold out here too. As is soap. And eggs

Then you live in the wrong part of the country ;). I haven't seen the toilet paper being sold out in my supermarket. I have no idea about soap and eggs, I wasn't aware people were hoarding those.

How was your walk today? This weekend the weather will be great, so you can do all the walking as long as you stay close to home and keep your distance from other people :).

We're pretty close to Noord Brabant. One of my husband's co-workers is from there and we're suspecting that we have him to thank for getting sick...

There are so many empty shelves in the supermarket (ah) here. It's really weird walking around there. The first day everyone had to stay home they were out of bread too...

None existent. I felt sick again yesterday evening and still felt drained today, so I did only the things that were absolutely necesary.

The weather was so nice this weekend! The boys played outside a lot. I wanted to go on a walk yesterday, but after cleaning the kitchen was dead tired. So I walked a bit today. To the supermarket and back. It made me really tired, but it was nice.

We played some d&d this morning. Peter (9yo) wanted to be the dm, so the whole party died 🤣. After that my husband gave him sone dm lessons. We also got a dinosour addes to our party which we named "bambi". We had fun :)

We skyped my mom this evening so she could read to the boys. I don't want her to come over, because she and my dad are in the risk group for covid-19. So she gets her grand-son fix this way :D

I'm having a lot of respect for teachers. I only have two kids to help with school work, and it's draining me. They behave perfectly, and they enjoy most of the work. Peter doesn't need much help (only a reminder to focus on his own work on occasion). Cory needs a bit more help, but he rewards me with lots of cuddles while we work :D  And still: I'm beat...

I needed some groceries today, and my husband is back to work (he works at the hospital. Luckily far away from the patients). So I needed to bring the boys with me. I just put Cory in the shopping cart. He's 7 and with his 1.25 meters way too big to fit in the kids seat, so he got to keep the groceries company. And I instructed Peter to hold the card at all times. Luckily the clerk at the supermarket allowed us to enter this way (she did address us when we tried to enter to make sure I would keep the kids close). Afterwards we went to the playground close to the supermarket and they got to let go of some of their energy.

Good job on caring for your kids! You're a good mom :). If you ever need help with maths/sciences, please send me a PM. I should still be able to do primary- and highschool level maths  and sciences ;). I hope their teachers are good and have plenty of available hours though, so that your kids don't need the extra help from you or others :).

They have. I can email them or chat with them using microsoft Teams. It's good to have them help when I need them to.

Today was about the difference between a square and a rectangle. I could manage that one :D

Today was a really good day. The boys really love to do ringfit, but I want them to start school at 9 am. So they made an effort this morning to start really early and get a workout in. Result: two really tame boys with excellent focus :D

I helped the boys with their schoolwork all morning and in the early afternoon. It wasn't too hard today. Peter had some dificult math problems (like 238x34) and I made it a game where I tried to calculate it by heart and he used a step by step plan to see if I was right (spoiler: I had about half of them right). He finds math really easy, and so its hard for him to stay focussed and not get bored. I think this helped him a lot.

Cory's math today was about shapes. He made a square and a rectangle out of crayons (by placing the crayons in those shapes). That wasn't too hard to help with :D

I also did a ringfit workout today. It was only 40 minutes and I was beat afterwards. But it felt good. I think I'll try to do this 3 times a week to get my strength and stamina back to where they were.

I'm glad that you and the boys enjoy ringfit, and that they even get up earlier to do it :). It's been a long while since I did those calculations by heart; nowadays I just estimate them. This was especially useful for my PhD, since I was writing simulations and wanted to know if the resulting values were reasonable. I would have made a significant error in your example though, were I first estimated 7500, while the answer is 8092 ;). It's impressive that you can do them by heart!

I just had an idea for applied arithmetic, feel free to discard it. If you like baking, and you want your son to practice his multiplications, you can do some American baking recipes. All the amounts are in cups, tablespoons and possibly fl.oz., so you need to convert this to grams for sensible measurement. I think a cup of flour is 135 grams? Numbers like that. Then, you of course don't want the full portion, but a portion that for example uses 2 eggs instead of 3, and scale accordingly. You have to convert the baking dish to centimeters as well, and possibly compute the area because the recipe asks for a square dish, and you only have rectangular or round. Finally, there's oven temperatures, which you convert from fahrenheit to celsius.

Now you understand why I prefer metric recipes ;).

Haha, that recipe would fail completely as I don't understant the weird american mesurements at al :D

But yeah, scaling recipes is something I do with the boys. I also let them measure stuff and such. They love it :)

We had a jumping rope competition today. I lost, because I don't have any coordination :D  And the ropes where too short. Yes, lets just blame it on the ropes ;)

My husband won btw (yes he's taller than me, shut up), the boys are now determined to practice even harder so they can beat him :D

I made a bundt cake as is tradition around Easter (in the Netherlands at least, I have no idea about the rest of the world). And it turned out AMAZING. I used this recipe

Yesterday I texted a bit with my SIL. As you might remember: she has a severe depression. It has been going on for nearly 2 years. She's been admitted in a facility where she got electroshock therapy and 'normal' talk therapy. With corona the electroshock therapy has been stopped before it should, she can't have visitors or leave the terrain to go on a walk (she was allowed to do so before). So she's in a real bad place :( The worst thing is, there is nothing anyone can do to help her. We're going to make a care package, and I'll make sure to text her once in a while (I can't phone her, because she has real bad hearing).  It just sucks
