Spezzy's late to the party

I am a few days late, however I am here, and I am ready.

I have moved to a location that I can only describe as Hoth-like. It is May, but there is snow. It is very confusing. I am not sure what next winter will bring, but for now, I am not not enjoying the change of weather. It's just different.

Different. That's what life is, right now.

And I'm not even talking about everything going on around the global pandemic.

Downsizing from a living with my partner in a 2700sq ft townhome in the suburbs to living with just my dog in a 595sq ft apartment in the city was not something that I thought would be on the plan for 2020, but here we are.

And I'm feeling pretty excited about it. While I'm not sure about this for the long term, it's an adventure, and this will at least be my next year.

Everything is still just so different, and there is so much to be done to build a new life here. And that feels very overwhelming, very often.

This is my fifth state in seven years - but this move, in particular, has been the hardest, because of the global pandemic and everything involved with that. Normally, when I move to a new city, I make a point to start going to the gym right away, establish myself and a new routine. The gym has been my constant through all of these moves. It has always been there for me.

But it can't be that for me right now.

Because of this and many other reasons, I decided to give myself permission to not strength train for a while, or really worry about fitness or nutrition - just move when feels good and eat what's healthy and available.

I have been active still - walking every day, multiple times, and doing a bit of yoga.

But I still have some lofty 2020 goals, and I still think I can get there (I actually think the extended break could help me get there, indirectly).

If we're looking at 2020 goals:

I've gone through a lot in the last few years, and it's started to shape me in a way I don't want to go. So 2020 is really looking at getting back to being the person I miss being.

If we look at that more specifically:

I am a person who loves fitness and has fun with it

I am a person who does not stress about food and enjoys cooking

I am a person who takes care of herself, physically and mentally

I am a person who is kind and brings joy

I am a person who is constantly evolving

I am a person who has the perfect pupper

I wouldn't say no to a 500lb deadlift and 10 strict muscleups in a row though, either, but those are secondary to the above :)

So how do we get there?

1) Fitness:

Strength Train 3x/week

Yoga 3x/week

Walking/Rucking* - Accumulate 30 miles over the challenge.

*I'm going to start with walking and slowly increasing distance, and then add weight there. Walking is one of the harder things on my hip, so it's going to take some time to build up any sort of endurance.

2) Nutrition:

For this we're going to do 90% auto immune paleo 90-95% of the time. This means my version of auto immune paleo (I still have dairy, rice, and eggs, for example, because they don't affect me) the majority of the time. 90-95% is arbitrary, and really only there in case the breweries in my new city open up (since this city is supposed to be known for its beer and I'd like to try it).

The big key factor to my success here is to not go to the vending machine in my apartment building. Even though it had been years since I had candy before I moved in, for some reason I got in a vending machine habit, and my body is not pleased (I'm breaking out like crazy). So that's going to be a big no.

I also just need to make sure I'm eating. I stress don't eat, or stress forget to eat, so I'll work on a system there in the next goal.

3) Life

New life, who dis? This challenge is going to be all about setting up my batcave. I only have 595 sq ft, but I currently only own a bed and a desk (I did order a couch, though!) for furniture.

So this will include getting everything set up, getting everything I need (but also ONLY what I need), and setting up systems to help me succeed.

This FEELS like a "non-measurable" goal, but I'd like to post up at least 3 things a week that I did to help improve my systems.

I'd also like to start making a point to get dressed in the morning, even if it's workout clothes. Every day. I've always been a nighttime showerer and want to say let's shower in the morning, but I'm not sure that much change is realistic in this challenge with everything else. Of course, one thing that would help me get to getting dressed would be to have a place to put my clothes away, but baby steps.

4) Evolving

I have an exam for a new certification (Exercise Therapist) at the end of the month - so I've basically got 2 weeks to finish studying and finish the exam. I'm confident in the material, and it's all been moved to online, but I have a few essays due before as well and they will take a lot of time.

And before the end of this challenge, I'd like to sign up for another certification or course of sorts. (I want to always be working on something - having the formal process of a certification helps keep me on track there)

5) Pupper

What would a spezzy challenge be without a pupper goal? Not only does it give me an excuse to post pupper photos, but it's actually really important. Felix is now a teenager (he's around 8 months old now) and this adolescent age is really important for his long term mental health. Going through this time of his life during a stay at home order is not the best, but obviously we need to do the best we can with the guidelines going on. In addition - he's training to have some pretty big jobs, so I need to make sure he can be in public and behave, regardless of what's going on around him.

My goal is to take him to one place at least once a week - home depot and lowes are open, so I'll probably do that mid day on a weekday when it's open (so there will be the fewest people there).

Thankfully we have a dog park right next to us and I can see it from my window so we can watch and take him down when it's appropriate to do (the dog park will NOT count as going somewhere, though). Since it's right next to my apartment complex, it's typically the same people and the same dogs, and most people wear masks and stay pretty far away from each other,  so the overall risk is low.

Thats it! I may add images later, maybe not. Want to get this up more than anything!

I like your goals, even the hard to measure goal is worth doing. Sometimes it is okay to look back at the past week and ask yourself if you feel like you did enough.

Glad you are back with us Rangers! We can help you keep motivated to do ALL the things, because that is what Rangers do!

Yeah - it's been such a great thing all around (except I miss her, of course!). She's really bonded with my Mom, who is retired and having something forcing her to keep a schedule and going on walks, especially in this COVID times, has been really great for BOTH of them. My Mom normally goes to college (she was an accountant and getting her art degree now that she's 70 :) ) but with that schedule gone, it's been really hard for her. But because of Madi, they have to go for walks, she has to get up and take her outside, etc. (She has light farm work, but is down to only around 20 or 30 rabbits, so it's not enough to force a schedule anymore).

They go EVERYWHERE together. Madi has her seat in the car and just likes going. That photo is from the car, from the laundromat, where apparently my mom brings the clothes out to fold in the car, and then she folds one thing, then Madi gets a treat, then she folds one thing, and Madi gets a treat.  Madi may or may not have gained a few pounds, but who's paying attention? :)

One of Madi's big issues is being afraid of all people and not being able to be around other dogs - she has a weaving studio and Madi goes up there and hangs out and now will go for a walk with all of her weaving guild friends, and they all just know not to try to touch Madi, and Madi likes that very much.

So I miss her, and it feels weird focusing on Felix, or another dog - but this is really a better situation for everyone, including Mads.

Okay, some updates!

Exercise:

Got in a light strength workout yesterday. Will do yoga today.

Walking is going fine - I mapped out the morning route I go with Felix and it's half a mile, so if I simply up that to 2x a day, I'll hit my 30 mile goal. I did not do the half a mile route 2x a day the last few days because it's been downpouring (we do at least 1x no matter what), but now that it's nicer out adding that back will be easy.  I still want to do some longer walks, but it's nice to know I can hit the goal pretty easily.

Food:

This has been pretty great overall. I've wanted to go to the vending machine but have chosen not to. I had one non AIP meal, so that keeps me on track for the 90% 95% of the time goal.

Life:

Batcave wise, I've ordered a few things (like a couch! and a desk!). I still have some more things to order, but feel good about having the biggest pieces ordered (I moved here with no furniture, so I've been in a mostly empty apartment for a while now, which has been fine but I'm ready for some real furniture).

I set up my bedroom as much as I could with what I have right now, which was huge because it got my clothes put away so I can live out of a closet instead of out of laundry baskets.

I also had therapy AND a new psychiatrist appointment, so that was definitely good for setting up batcave.

Evolve:

Next step here: find my text book and spend some time on this starting tomorrow.

Yesterday I got in a strength workout (my first 'full' one in a long time)!

I did:

5 rounds - 15 bodyweight squats, 10 pushups

5 rounds - 2 Wall Walks, 10 Dead bugs with wall press

5 Rounds - 15-25 hip thrusts, 10 l sit compressions

5 Rounds - 10 parallette pike pushups with :10 l sit hold

I also put together my desk, which arrived yesterday! Couch comes Saturday. Fingers crossed I can get that IN to my apartment hahah

Okay! Way overdue for an update, but I have been trucking along. Between the stay at home and the protests (I live downtown in my city, and the National Guard set up shop in our parking lot) really were taking a lot of energy. Definitely starting to feel more and more human as life starts to go back to a "routine" though.

Fitness - I've been walking at least a mile a day with Felix, throughout the day, so hitting that.

I haven't been great about strength training, however, i do have a plan and a program and am going to start back up next week.

This week, however, I have gone for 2 runs, which is 2 more runs than I've gone on the last 6 years. I even got up before work this morning to go for a run because the weather was bad last night and i couldn't go then, so that was interesting.

Yoga have been doing stretches but not full sessions.

Nutrition - this is going just fine. Nothing fun to report here!

Life - This has been a big focus.

I have been getting dressed every morning, which was on my eventual but not this challenge goal list.

I've been working on getting my network up and running and automating everything, though 2 weeks ago my computer died and I had to get a new one, and this week my modem/router died and I got sent a broken one - so hoping the one that should arrive today is functional!

Evolving - I finished (and passed) my Exercise Therapy Specialist cert, and started my next one. So this is 100% on track.

Pupper - We've been going to the dog park and on runs but that's really it. Now that more things are opening and it's safe(r) to get around, we'll start this up :)

Congrats on passing the cert! How are the runs going? Do they hurt your hips as much as the walking? I saw your Instagram about your run in the rain, and how running in the rain was easier than walking in the rain. That might be a plus to get me motivated to run.

Thank you! They've been okay - I've only done 3 so far (have another tonight) and I'm prioritizing recovery (making sure every other day for now), form, and cadence. I'm averaging around 11 minute miles if we combine the running and the walking so that's not terrible, but I'm fine with keeping that around the 11 minute mark for a while if I need to to protect the hip. I have to do what some might feel is a strange pre-run warm up (a lot of deeper stretches), but it does seem to be helping!

And yeah, go out in a downpour. The faster you run, the less you feel the rain 😂
