My doc put me on a twice a week prescription strength Vit D pill, and it started helping my mood by the end of the second week. I hope it helps you too.

Good to know. My doc put me on some vitamin D while back, and I upped it, which they didn't mind. (Sounded like they prescribed a lower than optimal dose because they thought maybe it wouldn't agree with me or something?) Then I forgot, or something. But right now, I'm going to spend a few weeks at about the maximum safe dose I can justify. I'm probably super low, for multiple reasons, and also have many things going on that indicate low D, so time to (safely) megadose.

(God, I'm glad Mr_Willes isn't here to comment on my lack of D.)

At dusk, the room faded into the dim glow of candles. Fat brought the master tea.

"Thank you," said Piandao. He blotted his brush and laid it down. "And how is our new student settling in?"

Fat snorted.

"Hmm." Piandao stroked his beard. "I may have to devise a lesson."

"Good luck," said Fat sourly.

Sara sat by the campfire, drinking green tea from a clay jug stored in the stream to chill it. Warming on a rock near the fire was a packet of rice wrapped in a banana leaf that she'd purchased from a cart in Shu Jing.

She didn't hear the footsteps behind her until Master Piandao was beside her. She bowed.

"I believe," said Piandao, "that you are out of balance."

"Uh... I guess so?" said Sara, looking like a startled cartoon for a moment. One droplet of nervous sweat hung in the air by her brow.

"We will start there," said Piandao.

"So, like, yoga or something?" said Sara.

"Well, that as well," said Piandao. "But I mean internal balance. You need to learn to look within yourself. That is where your strength is."

"Uh, I'm pretty good at looking inside myself," said Sara. "That's also where all the annoying things are." Also, blood and guts. That stuff was in there, too.

"You have neglected your yin energy," said Piandao. "So your yang energy is failing you. You must learn to let go. You must understand your attachments, and learn not to try to use power to accomplish things."

Sara frowned. "But then it wouldn't happen."

Piandao's lips quirked up and he inclined his head. "You must learn to identify what blocks and unblocks your flow."

I'm not a river, thought Sara grumpily. What the hell sort of wise-mentor metaphor is this?

"On the battlefield, we must feel the flow and follow it," said Piandao. "To do that, we need to feel it off the battlefield, too."

"I guess so," said Sara dubiously. It sounded good, just... still not a river.

"Have you slept well?" said Piandao.

"Um," said Sara. "You mean this month...?"

"I see," said Piandao. "Your yin energy is in great need of being replenished, then. Tomorrow you must begin to learn to rest. You cannot fight well if you cannot rest. Make your preparations tonight. If I check up on you tomorrow, I expect to find you resting."

"But I have things to do!" said Sara.

"That's why it's a challenge," said Piandao.

Sara watched him stroll back to the castle, then banged her head on a rock in frustration.

Fat put down the gong.

"Not bad," said Piandao. "Awake and into a complicated but urgent task immediately."

Sara glared at him.

"And you did it well," he continued. "You weren't discouraged. You used curiosity. You kept going until you solved it. Yes, not bad."

Sara glared more.

"What have you learned about flow?" said Piandao.

"That it works if things are on fire," muttered Sara.

"You didn't get enough rest," said Piandao.

"I'm aware," said Sara, stuffing her face into the pillow.

"It was a good start. Even the first time you got up," said Piandao. "Solving the problem was good. Then you were not solving the problem. What did you learn?"

"That I need a nap before I'm relaxed enough to sleep," said Sara.

"Unusual," said Piandao. "What else?"

"I need to limit the number of problems in front of me," said Sara.

"Sensible," said Piandao. "Now rest. You have half an hour."

Fat smirked and twirled the gong mallet.

I do need the yoga, too, though. Apparently when I'm half asleep, I try to do it in bed.

I love your stories.

I've been reading a series of lessons from a Zen teacher. There is a lot of frustration involved. Letting go of attachment is challenging.

I see nothing wrong with veggies, hummus and ice cream as a eating strategy. Put some fruit on the ice cream and you have covered all the food groups. Maybe with chocolate sauce because chocolate is an anti-oxidant. Really. I think people get too caught up in cultural expectations for what food to eat when. One summer I lived on ice cream and Chinese food, and lost weight. Do what works for you and don't sweat it.

My freezer does not have this room for popsicles at the moment. At least, not in the quantities in which I'm eating popsicles. I will have to correct this.

1) Yes, I'm making steady progress on that. But 2) I need to be able to store a week's worth, and I've currently only got room for three days of popsicles.

I have a similar problem.  I want to have ice cream but I don't have room in my freezer for single tub.  It's a real quandary.

I'm confused. Are the items that block freezer space not edible? Surely, if they are, that presents a comparatively easy solution?

Popsicles?

Joking aside, I can see how that's a dilemma. Plan for the worst, just in case it happens, is typically a sound policy. Probably even more so right now.

Mostly it's just an awkward shape with shelves I can't move, so nothing fits.  I should try to organize it better so it fits more popsicles.

Week 2 Day 2

Done:

Got up early to fix someone's problem.

Laundry.

Badly needed nap.

Make food.

Wash the dishes.

Bag the recycling.

Marinate jerk chicken for tomorrow.

Start the chicken bone stock with the frozen vegetables bits.

To do:

Drink at least another liter of fluids.

Sleep.

Hang the laundry up to dry.

I'm super tired today. I've been sleeping four hours a night and putting in very long work hours to fix something for my boss. Would have preferred some lead time, but there you go. I'm really too exhausted to do anything, but I want chicken. I can't actually live on popsicles.

Do the grocery stores where you live do curb side pickup or delivery? And do they have deli sections that roast rotisserie chicken?

Speaking as a temporarily kitchen-less person right now, I have a whole new appreciation for the deli/take-out food department in my grocery stores.

I do order groceries, and have been leaning heavily on deli stuff lately. The deli section is amazing. No rotisserie chicken that I could find, though, and nothing this late at night. But I did have chicken to stick in the oven. I just needed enough energy to do it.

The other clever thing I did when shopping of get tons of little to no prep salad vegetables. So I have a giant salad of spinach, cucumber, grape tomatoes, baby carrots, snap peas, Greek olives, almonds, parmesan cheese, and hummus. Once I got the chicken in and had some ice water, I had energy to do a thing.
