The Jedi Chronicles Ep. 5: Jedi Strikes Back

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

So if you hadn't noticed, I've been struggling with my functionality as a human being recently. There have been a lot of bits of things happening, and it's just straight up a lot. I'm stressed most of the time. After 3 months and 20lbs, I quit keto. It wasn't really working with my values. Even though I do want to lose weight and such. The whole time, I felt like I was betraying myself because I'm not a person who does that kind of dieting. It worked, but I'm not sure at what cost emotionally.

You were the chosen one revenge of the sith star wars GIF on GIFER ...

So thanks to some encouragement from some of my friends here on the forums, I started reading Lean and Strong by Josh Willis. And I fell in LOVE with his philosophy. It's basically intuitive eating with guidelines that help you relearn the negative coping behaviors that end in me eating like an idiot for no reason at all on random days. It also emphasizes working out/building strength. The idea is that you build your eating skills by practicing them as often as possible. There's a 12-week intermediate program that I'm starting tomorrow (I did a simpler version last week).

As far as tracking, I have two Google sheets, one for the skills and one for the workouts. I'll link those here, likely tomorrow. For the skills, his suggestion is that the ideal place to stretch and grow without it being too much is when you're working on something and you're successful about 80% of the time. Too much more and it's too easy. Too much less and it's too hard. So that's what my goal is going to be for this challenge, to keep things within that range. To keep track of it, I'll track attempts and successes on my chart. Workouts are pretty self explanatory. Hopefully my adjustments to make do without a gym membership doesn't throw me off too badly!

I really feel like I'm close to a breakthrough in my emotional life. I'm kinda dancing around something and don't know when it'll break. I've been really trying to focus on excellence vs. perfection, which has been a huge help. And I think if I can just make some breakthroughs in learning (late) some basic emotional skills, I'll be able to become a happier, healthier, more well adjusted individual. I'm right on the cusp, I know it!

Following for sure! I thought the point about a goal being too easy was interesting.We talk a lot on the forums about not making it too difficult, but I see the point in it not being too easy either.There really is a sweet spot.

I think I'm going to start the workouts next week. I think for my skills. I'm going to do the values tracker program thing, and then maybe just a few skills (putting fork down and limiting snacks)

Hey!! Yeah, that was interesting as well. I can see how people can get bored with goals that are too easy, and you lose the sense of accomplishment in a way.

I tried some of the skills last week, so I'm jumping on one of the programs now to see how it goes!

oooooooffffffffffff

DOMS all day, my dudes.

I worked out yesterday. It was challenging, but not so much so that I was frustrated. That may change when I'm doing renegade rows later in the week, but we'll see. But my thighs are d e a d today. My ankle seems to have decided to behave itself permanently as far as I can see. I also learned that I can eat ice cream again?? With no lactaid?? IDK, I don't wanna play with it much, but I consumed a milkshake without puking so I count that a win.

My parents are coming today bringing all sorts of lovely furniture for us as gifts, and she wants to take me to Goodwill to find more nice furniture for my home. We're also going to get rid of the extraneous furniture taking up space and looking gross (thanks dog). It will be nice to see my parents for sure. And to get some more nice furniture in our house!

Hey look.

DOMS again.

Unsurprisingly, my DOMS has lasted through today. I woke up with it worse. But if it works like I normally do, I'll be fine in the morning. Just in time to do another workout tomorrow!! Gotta remember to ask Mr. Right to leave me they key to the shed. He has a little workout set up down there that his friend loaned him the equipment for since they didn't have the space. Figure I may as well use it while it's there!

I actually ate fairly well while my parents were here, even with an Italian restaurant on the menu. I practiced getting protein and not eating too fast. And just enjoying good food and good company. I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to really enjoy the balanced meals. Remembering to put my fork down between bites can be a struggle, but I'm getting there SLOWLY. And that's what counts.

What's best is that even though I don't think I'm actually losing anything, I'm starting to feel better in my own skin. This is what eating for your values looks and feels like.

Ugh I need to sleep more.

My boss needed me to be available to call around 10, but he wasn't able to call because of an appt that went long. I haven't really been getting the 8 hours that I need to keep DOMS at bay. I'm mostly better today, but I'm definitely feeling exhausted. I'm trying to mentally rearrange my day to get my workout in, but it's definitely going to be a long one. My to-do list is a bit stressful to look at, but I'm trying to look at it in chunks. That, and there are a couple of things that will be a couple of days to get running but also I'm working both Saturday and Sunday.

I'm planning on working out, but I'm going to see how I feel later on. I'm trying to practice self compassion and listen to my body, but if I just don't feel like it (rather than my body needing the rest), I'd prefer to get my workout done (which fits into my values).

Breakfast this AM was delish - vanilla greek yogurt with some protein granola, blackberries, and blueberries. Hopefully, I'll have time to cook dinner tonight. I'm slightly concerned about getting everything done today, particularly with me feeling ugh. But we'll just have to see.

Hi y'all :)

I slept SOO much and feel somewhat better. I did not work out yesterday, my body was still feeling rough. I think I'm in what Josh Willis calls a "Yellow light" period of life. Things are stressful, there's a lot going on,  and I'm not running on optimal. Like.. my sleep wasn't ideal because my dreams were reflections of my anxieties and stresses. I sat straight up right before 11am with the sudden concern that something needed to get done. Still not sure what it was.

I'm slowly starting to see where I'm doing well - and where I still have room to grow in my eating practice. Getting lots or protein at every meal is fairly standard for me, so that's not a super hard skill. Noticing my hunger for a half hour before I actually get a meal is pretty easy for me as well.

One that's a major struggle for me is putting the fork down between bites. That intense focus on the food is very out of my norm, and it will take quite a bit of practice. Luckily, that one is a 4 week long practice. And I can always add it back in later if I'm still struggling. I think for that one, I will choose to put the fork down between bites specifically during meals that I'm not sharing. Being home alone is a better time to practice this for now, because it will help me avoid the distracted eating thing. Another good thing to remember is that if I don't feel confident here by the time I finish week 4, I can do another week (or two, or three) of practice of that before I move on. It's at my pace!

I'm still figuring out the 'eat every 4-6 hours with no snacks' thing. I may be overthinking it though. Most of the time it's fairly natural and fairly simple. I don't usually need a snack, but when I do I get a meal instead (I've definitely messed this up a couple of times, but that's expected in practicing). But there are a couple of things I'm unsure of. Like my morning coffee - it's basically no calories at this point (sugar free creamer and splenda) and my afternoon energy drink (basically sparkling flavored water with a kick, like 10 calories or something). Should those count as snacks? I enjoy having them to sip on while I work though, so I'm a bit confused. Again, may be overthinking things.

Any suggestions anyone?

What I do for the fork putting down between bites is think of it as a skill. I'm most likely not focusing on it every bite, but ever so once in a while, I just stop and remind myself. I started out doing it only at lunch. Doing it when I eat with hubby is harder. In one way that is fine, if I'm  talking, I'm eating slow.But he eats so quickly, it's really easy to just match his pace without thinking about it. So now, at dinner, I  will just catch myself shovelling my food in, and then for a few bites consciously slow it down.

I read the no snack thing as not having calorie drinks. And I for right now decided to not worry about it if I have a few calories in my drink (a bit of coconut milk in my tea for example) I can see where it can add up, but I'm not drinking that much. I think it falls into the category we've talked about on NF where liquid calories don't fill you up, but they do have calories. I'm sort of a read the book and decide what fits me sort of person.Which actually fits into the book anyway, they are just guidelines. You can do a self experiment. Do it a couple of weeks with not allowing any calories in your drinks, and then two weeks with.Which fits better into your values? Which helps you with your goals?

The key take away for me. Is the no snacks things is a guideline.It's purpose is there as a flag; When you stop and want a snack and it's only been a few hours, stop and think; Is it actually hunger? What else might it be? Do I need to eat more at meals? For me with the drinks, I feel like I enjoy my tea with a bit of coconut milk, and it's a treat so it is worth it.

Thank you!! Distracted eating is something I got unfortunately good at over the years, so the putting the fork down between bites is going to take lots of practice. Some meals I do fairly well, others I have to stop and remind myself a lot. And I'm the same way with Mr. Right! He eats quite a bit and really fast, so I have to really think to not match him.

Yeah, that's what I read too. The thing is, the two drinks I'm concerned about in particular are going to be part of my daily routine either way. I absolutely cannot function without my morning coffee (as the headache I had until 5 minutes ago can attest), and my afternoon is kinda necessary at this point as well. I was having my coffee with my breakfast for a few days, but it felt kinda weird. Though I think I mostly stopped because I ran out of food and stopped eating breakfast. So maybe I'll start having coffee with breakfast again. I was having my second caffeinated drink with lunch, but when I do that I'm not drinking enough water.

Any other calorie drinks are rare (the occasional cup of tea with milk,  or with lemon and honey when I'm sick, maybe a cup of decaf coffee late in the evening). So I dunno. I'll try consuming them with meals again though :)

It's Monday again!

So I'm looking at last week's tracking.

Increasing protein on my plate (getting my 1-2 servings) was 15/16 attempts over the course of a week.

Putting Fork down b/t Bites was 8/13 last week - not ideal. But that's an area of growth

Eating every 4-6 hours was pretty solid without snacks - 13/17 this week. Again, area of growth but that's the point of the practice :)

Noticing hunger for 30 minutes before eating was 16/17, and is going solidly well.

This week I'm also adding in 'if/then' planning: where you plan for obstacles in your week. Like this week, I'm likely to be stressed or lonely. Both of which cause me to eat (last night being a solid example). I'm going to find other things to do instead! Examples being watch a movie, read a book, go for a walk, or color!

Yesterday was a N I G H T M A R E.

So I was making veggie heavy quiches... I followed the instructions I found but just added different fillings. My crust and top were blackened, and the middle was liquid. Also in the middle of cooking (I figured I'd keep trying with it) my oven tripped the breaker and the whole thing cut off. No bueno. It took me like an hour to find the right switch because I checked, couldn't find it, called my mom- no answer, called her house- no answer, called my dad- no answer, called mom on facebook- no answer, called my sister-no answer. Last time it was that bad my grandmother was having a heart attack so I had a panic attack. Finally got ahold of my little brother who told me no one was hurt. Finally found the right switch when my sister called me back and calmed me down.  However, at this point the quiche was ruined and I'm scared to use my oven. Which I'm fairly certain needs a calibration, so I need to purchase an oven thermometer.

So yeah, no bueno. I'm making italian sausages for dinner tonight, with onion and pepper for the top and slicing a pineapple to have with. Tomorrow will be dirty rice with sausage, pepper, onion, and mushrooms. Easy stovetop meals. I'll deal with the oven after my cousin's wedding this weekend (a 5 hour drive away).

Today I'm exhausted because neither myself nor Mr. Right slept well, and on advice from my friend I've been getting up with him so I can see him while he's somewhat cheerful and functional as a human (it's hard to be cheerful and functional as a human when you work 10 hour days 5-6 days a week and don't sleep well or enough). Which may or may not be working but at least I'm trying, ya know? Ready for easier things for sure. And possibly a nap.

It's weird, this happened last month too. Hopefully Mr. Right will call his dadx soon, who was at one point an electrician (and a car radio installer, and a mechanic for cars, and a mechanic for HVAC, and a driver of large trucks, and the owner of a small landscaping business, and possibly a maker of pizza in a northern family owned pizza place??), to ask what he thinks might be up. I'm leaning towards electrical.

~~~~
Yesterday did NOT go better >_> I was super exhausted all day from not sleeping enough. I subsisted on caffeine until 4pm and stubbornness until 11:30.
Middle of the day, I got WAY too hungry and ate like a complete loon. This week has had some of the worst binging I've done in weeks. No bueno. But after the binge session, I was able to cut through the mental crap, and help myself find grace. Which for me, is a huge step. The next time I felt a binge urge, I walked in circles in the kitchen, and finally decided to make a cup of decaf coffee. I wasn't hungry then, just bored, stressed, and exhausted. So I made the coffee, finished watching The Unexpected Journey, and realized I'd drank like 3 sips of the coffee. I felt very gratified by catching my binge before it started. I was hungry before bed, but didn't feel like cooking so I had 1.5 bowls of cereal. I wanted to binge then too, but I managed to talk myself out of it with things like "you know you'll have a hard time sleeping with an overfull stomach" and "you know you're tired, just get a little something and get some rest." Oddly effective.
But when I went to bed, Mr. Right stayed up to watch tv and for some reason I could NOT get calm without him there. I'd sleep for like 30 minutes, then wake up freaked out after a sketchy, stress heavy dream, and have to go to the bathroom. This happened every 30-40 mins from around 11:30ish until he came in sometime after 2am. I went down to the living room after a while and sat next to him in hopes I'd calm down. Ineffective once I came back to bed.
Luckily, he didn't have to be in until 11am today, so I slept in with him until around 10. I don't feel exhausted like I did yesterday, but I feel bad that I couldn't convince myself to get up to help him get his food together and generally make his life easier before work.
I've been a lot better as far as food is concerned today, as in I'm feeling better. More confident. Having gotten some rest helps. I have a goal to get a workout done today, but we'll see how that goes. I'm not going to push it, I'll likely have more schedule freedom tomorrow (I've got a meeting at 3pm).
Okay wow. What a few days.
Thursday was actually pretty solid for the most part. I did my wednesday work out and then didn't do anything else since. I was out of town for a couple days and it was great! My cousin got married yesterday. There was all sorts of shenanigans around said wedding (2 postponings, 1 massive injury of the maid of honor during the rehearsal dinner, an absolutely ridiculous rainstorm that started 5 minutes after the outdoor ceremony did, some issues with the DJ, a small fight b/t the bride and her mom... and that's just what my cousin knew about).
I didn't really bother with my skills so much, aside from just enjoying the food as I was eating it. When we were travelling I tried to keep my meals 4+ hours apart, which went fine. We ate fast food a lot though, because the trip was long and the family we were staying with doesn't keep much food around their house.
For next week, I'm going to duplicate my 'week 2' from the lean and strong and do it again. I didn't really get to measure much what with me being gone for three days and putting a temporary pin in the skills. Mr. Right and I are going to stop going out to eat so much starting presently, and I've made it a goal to actually wake up when he does for work because I'm more productive when I do- from a work perspective, from a home perspective, and from a life perspective.
Been MASSIVELY enjoying Give Yourself More over the past bit, I haven't gotten through much of the application part except this really interesting exercise that's supposed to help you reframe your comparison thoughts. It has even now helped quite a bit. Surprisingly enough.
Going to go chill a little bit and enjoy the last little bit of my 'vacation' before I start grinding again tomorrow.
Sounds like a fun wedding!  Glad at least the rain wasn't during the weddingJosh recommends just enjoying vacation and maybe just focusing on one thing-which it sounds like you did.
Oh the rain was very much during the wedding xD It started a few minutes after the ceremony started, and it just downpoured through the whole thing.
And That's about what I did :)
Oh no, I thought you meant before the wedding! Was there some sort of covering, or was everyone soaked?
That sounds like a...colorful wedding. I once officiated a wedding for a second cousin (My mom and the bride's mom are cousins). It was...colorful. The bride wore a very cleavagey zebra striped black and white dress, while the maid of honor (her sister) wore a comaprable dress in pink and black. The highlight of the day was when I left. The father of the Bride was setting off fireworks in the parking lot. This would not normally be of note, but this was in full daylight and he was completely by himself.
Everyone was drenched >_> My husband's leather wallet was still soaked the next day.
It was mostly just a combo of hilarious and me wanting things to go well for my cousin.
Also that's hilarious xD That sounds like a mess though.
Yesterday I read a couple of chapters in Give Yourself More that really resonated. The first was about tailoring your goals to show body love. For example, instead of a weight loss goal, my goal would be to hike and dance without getting super out of breath. Instead of removing "junk food" from my diet, I add in tasty fruits, veggies, and homemade foods.
Another chapter was about exercise and about finding what exercise feels good to you. Now I never thought I had a bunch of hangups about exercise but BOY was I wrong. Upon doing a lot of thinking and reflecting, I'm realizing that I have a mildly disordered relationship with exercise. Some issues include "It's not a workout if I don't wreck myself" and "exercise is probably not going to be fun" and even "if I don't work out, I'm lazy, even if I didn't work out because my mind/body were exhausted or overworked" so I'm going to focus on searching for exercise that brings me joy, and find ones that bring me joy AND help with my goal of "functional strength."
For now, I'm going to make my workouts things like yoga, dancing, and hiking. Things that don't have me looking for the end and striving for that rather than enjoying what I'm doing in the moment. Yesterday I did a Yoga for the Lower back and it actually helped sooooo much! I may get Mr. Right on board with it too.
Y'all. I just have to talk about how awesome Mr. Right is for a second.
My desk chair has been a broken metal folding chair for over six months since we moved. I'm fairly sure it's contributed to the constant severe back pain I've been suffering from for months. I sent him to the store (under duress, he works so much I was planning to go myself), and he was gone an unusually long time. He shows up at home with a new chair! It's wood and leather, fits perfectly under my desk, and is so comfy! It makes me want to work at my desk again :) Apparently he drove around to like 3 different Goodwills to find me a chair.
Bless him ❤️
Well done that man.
Today I don't have a lot of energy. I don't know why, but I'm trying to allow it to just exist as it is and deal with it.
Unfortunately for my sanity, I discovered the date of an important (and problematic/stressful) event is MUCH sooner than Mr. Right and I expected. I'm extremely scared, and he is too. Anyone who wants to pray, please do! I don't mind talking about it, but I'm trying to keep it out of public eye for any number of important reasons but if you want to PM me here or Facebook message me for more info that's fine. If you want slightly more detail for requests, then "calm for the next few days and a favorable outcome" would be great.
