Ranger Hal Takes Some Steps

I kind of got distracted during the last week of the previous challenge when my office started a six week step challenge. To get the maximum number of points, I have to have 12,000 steps (or equivalent converted from other activities). I was just going to do it because some coworkers wanted to form a team and I figured it would be easy to do the minimum (only 2000 steps), but I was surprised when the leaderboard pushed my competitive buttons. I now have 9 days of 12,000 steps in a row. I'm planning to try to keep the streak going through the end of the office challenge. I'm not sure I'm going to also do a challenge here, but I want my own space to put stuff, hence this thread. We'll see what happens.

Garden news: the zucchini plants died. They never did very well after being transplanted outside and I found slugs eating them a couple of times. Everything else is still alive, but doesn't seem to be growing much. For now, I'm blaming Juneuary because it's been really rainy and not very warm. Hopefully things will get better soon or I won't be getting much out of the garden.

Walk to Mordor: I have made it to the stone trolls!

I tried tea today. I haven't really ever enjoyed tea, but I was hoping to find something nice and hot to drink that wasn't entirely sugar like apple cider packets or alcoholic like the bourbon/honey/lemon stuff I drink when I'm sick. The tea was supposed to be orange spice, but there just wasn't a lot of flavor to it. I wasn't very impressed and there are a lot of tea bags left.

Bummer about the plants. I've had so much problem with slugs this year, even though Ive put out slug killer.  I think it's because it's been so wet.

It's crazy how many slugs I've seen, both around the garden and when I'm walking the trails. Hopefully this nice weather we're having right now will get rid of some of them. And maybe the sun will encourage my plants to grow.

I guess I'm not posting much. I've working on getting my 12,000 steps every day. The jumping rope step conversion on the website my office is using is really awesome, but I overdid it one day last week (34 minutes broken into a couple of sessions) and hurt my foot. No more jumping rope for a while, so I've been going on long walks after work (probably not great for my foot, but it hurts less than jumping rope). My foot is feeling slightly less swollen today. It never looked particularly bad, but my shoes felt a bit tighter than normal.

Last night I whacked down some of the grass in my yard. It was kind of out of control. I think I got through about half of the tall stuff before the whacker battery died. Hopefully it's summer enough that the grass will die and I won't have to deal with it for a couple of months. The garden lettuce seems to be growing slightly.

The weather is really nice. I'm feeling a little guilty about not getting out to enjoy it. Blah.

Note to self: when I start doing challengy things again, I want to add knot tying practice.

Still doing some steps, although I didn't get up to 12k for the last few days. Foot isn't up to jumping rope yet. Garden looks about the same. Why isn't it growing? House is kind of a mess. I need to do more dishes, put away piles of stuff, and figure out what to cook.

Hope the foot heals quickly.  The garden needs more sun and warmth to grow. Also, NW soil gets depleted quickly of all the good nutrients due to our rain. I fertilize mine with organic fertilizer

So basically, the compost that I added just before planting probably all disappeared in Junuary?

I used to add compost. Then I read  how in the NW, our rain just washes it away and depletes aeverything. It advocated for adding fertilizer. I've changed to that and it has made a difference. The book suggests making your own, but I only did that once. Usually I just buy organic fertilizer. Now that I have my own gardening shed I might go back to mixing it myself.

This is the book. I highly recommend it

Walk to Mordor progress: I made it to Rivendell!

Random thought: why doesn't the Nerd Fitness spellchecker know "Mordor."

In other news: work has been busy (yay overtime? not really), I haven't gotten enough sleep since Tuesday or before (can't remember past Tuesday because that was forever ago), and we've gotten like tons of SAR calls (which I mostly couldn't go on: see work has been busy). Maybe I will take a nap. That sounds nice.

I did lots of things last night. I bought the new Dresden Files book, picked up a movie from the library (I had it on hold, but it didn't arrive before the library closed back in March; the library is still mostly closed, but is starting curbside pickup; as of today, my physical item holds are active again and not "paused until 2049"), weed whacked a section of grass, watered the garden, and went for a walk. The garden is growing, but still has a ways to go before the lettuce is ready to harvest. My foot is better and I can jump rope for a couple of minutes, but I think I still need to take it slow.

This morning, I chopped a ton of veggies and threw them in the crockpot to make a veggie curry. The recipe seems a little weird because the only spices are cumin and garlic powder (plus some tomato paste) and I usually expect to put some curry powder (or at least a combination of 5-6 other spices) in curry, but I followed the recipe and we'll see how it turns out tonight.

I really like cumin , but hmm, I wouldn't consider it and garlic alone to be curry flavoring. You'll have to report back

Well, it wasn't bad (not outstanding either), but it definitely didn't taste like curry to me. The tomato paste turned into a light tomato sauce when mixed with everything else and that was the dominant flavor. The cumin and garlic just modified the tomato flavor a bit.

I planted two zucchini seeds in tiny pots this morning. I figure it's easier to keep the soil wet while the seeds germinate if they're indoors. The internet says it's okay to plant zucchini through mid-July, so maybe I will actually get some this year, even though my first plants died.

The zucchini seeds are sprouting! They are such chubby sprouts compared to the other things I have planted. Super cute!

Got myself out of the house for a hike on Saturday. Mom and I cooked a turkey (prep Saturday night, cooked on Sunday morning and processed after church). Then I took the bones/weird bits/vegetables home and made stock. Possibly not the best time to do that given the current weather. It's a bit hot to be boiling stuff on the stove for hours. Last night I made turkey noodle soup and it was very good (possibly good enough to justify the temperature in the house while cooking).

I'm starting to think about next challenge (because this was kind of an un-challenge). Ideas are as follows:

  • 6 week mountaineering workout
  • chin-up challenge from that NF email I got today (except pull-ups because chin-ups are weird)
  • make my house less of a disaster
  • not spend quite so many hours with my online game so I actually get stuff done around the house
  • hiking on weeknights at least once a week

Now, how to do some things without making myself overwhelmed, stressed, and exhausted...

I was productive last night. Kind of confused how that happened, but I did some yard work, cleaned the bathroom, washed a bunch of dishes (I really let them pile up the last few days, so there are still a few left to go), and made muffins. The bathroom sink is so clean now! It made me happy this morning.

I would probably say it's a mess. There may be more colorful ways to say it, but nothing is coming to mind right now, although I do recall my parents describing my room as a pig sty on occasion when I was growing up.

Well, in summary, the title of this challenge was step related. During my office's 42 day step challenge (which started near the end of last challenge), I recorded over 555k steps. I was nowhere near the top, but that's okay. I think the top was fairly unreasonable. I'm not sure how the people on top were getting all their steps. On average, it was the equivalent of walking for 8+ hours or going on a 4+ hour hike every day. My theory is that they have those desk treadmill things and spend the entire work day accumulating steps. That was not going to happen for me and I'm generally happy with my step results.
