August Challenge

Starting weight: 194 lbs 

 

Let the bulking begin! 

 

I want to add a little more size, especially the shoulders and upper back. I look good standing in front of the mirror but not if I turn sideways. I have no depth. The prescription is Rows, more barbell, and eating. 

 

Bane will be my inspiration this challenge. He wears a mask, believes in social distancing, and he is always on the bulk.

#1 Training 

 

From experience what works best for me when gaining weight is moderate intensity (70-80% 1RM) and high volume. I did really well on 8/6/3 laddering up and back down for 5-6 sets of 6-8 reps, 4-5 days a week. 

 

I haven't been on the barbell for a few months so cutting 15% off my last training max to use as a starting point. May be too light or too heavy, we will see.

#2 Diet

 

I am going to focus on protein and let the calories fall where they go. I don't gain muscle below 130g of protein. I don't notice gains until around 150-160g daily. I have never hit the bodybuilding recommended gram per pound. So I will target roughly 200g a day which is a LOT for me. That is some serious eating. Will focus on sausage, eggs, chicken, tuna, and peanut butter. This is going to be tough and the hardest part.

#3 Sleep 

 

From my last side quest I know that I feel better with more sleep. To help support muscle growth and fuel my morning workouts I'm going to have to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night.

A very good workout. I really enjoyed that. 

 

Diet

 

Masked up and braved the grocery store. Picked up chicken breasts, tuna, eggs, canned chicken. 

 

Sleep 

 

I slept well last night, even woke up about 15 minutes before my alarm. I didn't take any supplements or melatonin last night. It helps but I wake up feeling so groggy from it.

I look forward to reading how your challenge goes.  I'm still a while off trying my first ever deliberate bulk (still trying to shift excess fat first) so hopefully I'll pick up some tips from you.

Insomnia kicked in last night as it sometimes happens to me. I tossed and turned, white noise, read, didn't matter. I was finally able to get 3 hours in. I am going to drag all day.

I was short yesterday 

 

Sleep 

 

I passed out last night and slept hard. Got a solid 8 hours. I don't think I moved once. Woke up to the alarm and felt hung over. I feel good now after a workout and a shower.

Yes, missing a squat rack, but I have a bench, barbell, trap bar, adjustable DBs, and two kettlebells set up in the garage. It's bits and pieces that I have picked up over the years but I am able to do fine with what I have. A squat rack and a pull up bar would be nice though. 

 

Thanks! Eating is the hardest part but I am actually starting to get hungry in the morning and usually I never am.

Off day but I was up so did some light arm work. 

 

Food Yesterday

193g protein 

 

Sleep 

 

Got a solid 7.5 hours. No melatonin or anything. I really could have slept a lot longer.

LOL I had planned on eating a little cleaner while keeping calories and protein high. No groceries in the house and the next contactless pickup is not until today. (they are hard to find a opening) so we have done more fast food than I would like but if the bulk is a little dirtier than I planned then I am not worried about it.

Reverse flys, where have you been in my life? Seems to hit just the area I am looking to build. Might have to grab a light weight and load up on reps during the week. 

 

Food Yesterday 

 

3 sausages, 2 chicken breasts 
Sausage biscuit 
2 cans tuna, mayo, triscuits
Protein powder shake
3 hotdogs, fries

175g protein 

 

Ugh, I'm not sure how much longer I can shovel food into my mouth. 

 

Sleep 

 

I was tired during the day but of course as night approached I perked up. I cut caffeine after 2pm, magnesium, melatonin and still had a little trouble getting to sleep. Got 6.5 hours.

A nice little workout. Overall this has been a great break-in week to get back used to barbells.

Positive encouragement from my wife: Everytime I see you, you are eating something. Stop it! 

 

Sleep 

 

Good sleep last night. Got to bed early very easy but woke up about 2 hours later with low blood sugar. Ate a banana and went back to sleep. 8 hours and feel refreshed for once.

The sleep seems to be going well - how are you tracking it?  Is it on a Fitbit or something similar?

It was fun for about 2 days and then it turned to, oh no not another chicken breast. I'm still full from the sandwich and eggs. 🤢

 

Most likely I will gain a good bit of body fat this challenge but losing fat is pretty easy for me (losing muscle is easy too unfortunately) classic ectomorph body type.

No, I am just eye Ballin it. I wake up at the same time every day so as long as I am asleep by 9:30pm I count it as a full 8. My habit is to play on my phone till 11 or 12 and stay chronic unrested. It is a real challenge to get to sleep on time.

I am jealous of your sleep.

 

Last night, I went to bed by nine, because getting up early for a 5:30 AM meeting made me exhausted sleepy tired by early evening. Slept from nine in the evening to six in the morning and for the first time in a long while I woke up feeling rested. I have no idea how to replicate this, but I would really like to find a way that doesn't involve getting up at 5 AM the day before.

The insomnia books I have read usually say that it helps to have a consistent wake up time. To never deviate more than a hour from it. To focus on this instead of your bedtime. The theory is that you get used to getting up at the same time every day so your body gets tired and wants to sleep around the correct time as well. 

 

It doesn't have to be 5am but it has to be a time that fits with your life.

Off day 

 

No training today. Not sure what I am going to get into. Might do some yard work. 

 

Food Yesterday 

 

3 eggs, peanut butter toast 
Ham sandwich 
Tuna fish sandwich 
Protein powder shake
Fried chicken, mashed potatoes

190g protein 

 

The chicken was so salty and made me so thirsty afterwards. Going to be bloated all day. 

 

Sleep 

 

My one day a week to sleep in a hour later than usual. I used the extra hour to stay up last night to watch the final episode of Warrior Nun. Netflix better have a season 2, otherwise it is not cool to end on a cliffhanger like that. Got roughly 8 hours.

I've read that as well. Unfortunately, I have not been able to implement it, and I suspect that's one of the bigger factors keeping my insomnia alive and well.

I've been doing it for several months, almost a year now. It doesn't solve it completely but it does seem to help.

Good news - I read the other day that it's been picked up for a second season.  Which is handy, because I also need to learn what happens next!
