Weight: 119.0.kg - nice to see that yesterday wasn't just a fluke.

Wednesday steps: 9332 (2332 over target for the week) - that extra trip out round the block in the evening got my week off to a good start.

Wednesday calories: 2601 (18 under target for the week) - carefully budgetted in to have some wine tonight with our omelette & chips.  Today I'm trying to save up some calories for tomorrow - it's going to hit 29C here so we're going to have a barbecue in the garden, and I want to be able to drink cider and eat a (metric) tonne of meat.

This morning I sat on the exercise bike for half an hour reading comics (finishing off some Captain Marvel and moving on to rereading some Hawkeye next), and later on we're heading off to view a house that we're really hoping to be able to rent - it's in the perfect place to hunker down and wait out the rest of the pandemic in the a little country town.  So fingers crossed for that!

Tomorrow morning my plan is to get out and get the gym and the bulk of my daily step target done as early as possible before it gets too warm, then lie in the back garden (under a parasol) quietly melting and rehydrating with cider.  It should be a good day.

EDIT: I forgot to mention - due to laundry issues, for my workout this morning I had to wear a vest this morning that I've been avoiding for the last few months as it was uncomfortably snug around the waist.  I'm pleased to report it is no longer clinging to my belly, so I have a tangible thing to prove to the stupid doubting part of my brain that all my progress so far can somehow be put down to dehydration or something similar... 😅

The Vest/undershirt/waistcoat ambiguity made this an interesting image for a bit.

One mustn't lift without one's waistcoat. One should, however, take off one's hat before performing the overhead press.

I have also made this mistake on many an occasion.  See also lying down to do the bench press with the cap on backwards and having another collision...

Ok, so here's today's update:

Weight: 119.3 kg

Thursday steps: 6999 (2331 over target for the week) - wish I'd realised I ws a whole one single solitary short for the day 😂

Thursday calories: 2085 (552 under target for the week) - my budgetting worked, I have given myself a nice calorie buffer for the weekend now!

This morning I headed off to the gym again, still only two of us in there at that time.  First time through Workout 3, which is basically the reverse of Workout 1.

Bench press went well.  The work sets were:

40kg x5

47.50kg x5

52.5kg x5+ (I did 9)

The squats are definitely feeling more natural again now, and it's easier to find exactly where I want to put my feet when I'm setting up.  Still plenty of work to do on form though.  The work sets were:

45kg x 5

52.5kg x 5

60kg x5+ (I did 7).

For my accessory work I picked barbell rows, and did 5x10 @ 30kg.  I wasn't sure if I had lowballed that, but in the last set I had to take a slight pause after the 7th rep before finishing the final 3 so it clearly pushed me.

I also wasn't sure whether it would be better to use an overhand or underhand grip for the exercise, so as a compromise I used the overhand grip and treated myself to some brocep curls afterwards with a dumbbell.  I think I deserved a little reward like that for completing Week 1 of a new programme, which I'm really pleased with!  Excited to see the slightly heavier weights on Monday, while also a little bit frustrated that I don't get to go again this week.

Still, it's going to be a nice warm & sunny weekend here so we have plans - gonna have a nice barbecue this evening after the Welshman finishes work (is it bad that I've already logged the calories to figure out how much cider I can drink without going over target?), and then tomorrow we're heading over to see his parents, which will probably involve drinking wine in the garden.  Gonna jump on the bike for a bit before we go though, and we'll clock up plenty of steps as we're braving the train for the first time since this all started.

Hope you all have a good weekend - here's a gratuitous gym selfie for you all to finish!

I was booked in for a proper trim on Tuesday but after today's announcements it might be back to homemade trimming?

I have been so looking forward to getting my lockdown buzzcut turned into the beginnings of a regular hairstlye again, and as good as the Welshman has done with my beard trims I just want a professional to turn it into  a properly shaped one again because it makes me feel so much more confident.  And fingers crossed there are more job interviews coming soon so I need that in my corner to help me along.

Saturday weight: 118.2 kg

Friday steps: 8305 (3636 over target for the week)

Friday calories: 3869 (698 over target for the week) - as soon as the Welshman finished work we decamped to the back garden with cider, then eventually lit the barbecue and cooked some lovely food.  I experimented with  the leftover turkey mince from earlier in the week and mixed with with bacon and a load of salt, pepper, and garlic powder which resulted in some  really nice little sliders - I'll definitely be making them again.  As it was such a nice warm evening we stayed out there drinking rose, and eventually I was inside drinking red wine, hence the calorie count for the day... 😅

Sunday weight: 119.9 kg

Saturday steps: 7308 (3944 over target for the week) - the plan to get the train didn't happen as it was a rail replacement service, and spending that much longer in more confined conditions didn't seem preferable right now so we just stayed local for the day.

Saturday calories: 3653 (1732 over target for the week) - we ended up in a pub beer garden (it was such a lovely day!) and then dinner turned out to be unexpectedly calorific (beautiful chicken & leek pie from the local butchers) but it was totally worth it.

Monday weight: 120.2 kg

Sunday steps: 10380 (7324 over target for the week) - the Welshman's parents came over to see us today instead, so we took them & their dog (a little Jack Russel called Seve Balesteros, obviously) for a walk across the country fields near our house and then went to the same pub beer garden to get some lunch.

Sunday calories: 2250 (1363 over target for the week) - I kepy myself to just ordering a little snack as we'd had a late breakfast that morning, and then the evening's dinner consisted mainly of vegetables so the calorie count wasn't too bad.  Shouldn't be too hard to get myself back into my accepatable calorie range by the end of Tuesday.  And it was seeing this once I'd logged it that helped me refrain from having a glass of wine in the evening.

Ok, on with Monday!

Gym this morning - I was the only person in there again, which was perfect!

It was back to Workout 1 again, but the Week 2 version has slightly heavier weights and slightly fewer reps.  Squats felt good though - the work sets were:

57.5kg x3 (I accidentally did 5)

65kg x3

72.5kg x3+ (I did 6)

Bench - the work sets were:

35kg x 5

40kg x 5

47.5kg x5  this seems really easy & light, but the programme says these percentages so that's what I'm doing.  The heavy bench is later in the week anyway.

Accessory work: hack squats - 5x10 @ 40kg.  Legs were properly burning by the end of the last set again, so I think I've found the weight I'm sticking with for this cycle!

Now it's just time to get on with general pottering round the house and taking care of some chores.  More job applications too.  Quite disappointed that the government put a hold on relaxing some more of the guidelines at the weekend, as I was booked in to have a proper beard trim for the first time in months tomorrow but they're still limited to only being able to do haircuts for a while longer.  Guess the Welshman has to give it a go again instead!

Dang! It sounds like you had a great weekend! Sliders, mince pie, beer garden. I am so jealous!

Good workout too. Yes on 5/3/1 I noticed that sometimes the weight felt light and other times the exact same weight felt overly heavy. I think it is normal. The fun part is the heavy single week. The single always feels heavy but moves easier than you expect which is really nice and keeps you motivated.

Happy training!

Tuesday weight: 118.9 kg

Monday steps: 13,124 (13,448 over target for the week) - accidentally hit a pretty hefty target for the day!  Can't complain about that.

Monday calories: 2436 (1,180 over target for the week) - squeezed a cheeky evening drink into today's calories.  Tuesday should be completely dry, which will take me under my target for the week.

Not much else to report for the day - hopped on the exercise bike for half an hour earlier on, spent most of the rest of the morning repeatedly restarting my laptop as it was playing silly buggers.  Quiet day ahead, then tomorrow is the weekly shop followed by deadlift/ohp day.  Oh, and the weekly proper weigh-in...

Let's see, yesterday ended up like this:

Tuesday steps: 6970 - once again, hadn't realised how close I was to hitting the target there!

Tuesday calories: 2353 - used up all the leftover veg in the fridge making a big turkey bolognese-thing and brought my calorie total back within target for the week.

This left my weekly steps at 13,418 over target (awesome) and my calorie total at 914 over target (so within my +/-1000 goal).  Pleased with that.

Unfortunately today's weight-in was more frustrating, as for some reason it was inexplicably up to 119.8kg this morning.  As annoying as this (and I'm more annoyed at myself for letting one measurement affect my mood so much), I'm trusting the rest of my results and keeping faith in the trendline:

image.png.4eda3bdf34576c8f96fa118ea3925a4f.png

Typical that the first week I hit my calorie goal is the first week my weekly weigh-in stalls 😂.  I'm going to just trust in the process though - steps goal stays the same, calories stay at 2619 daily, and if the trendline levels off I change something else then.

Anyway, after that I did the weekly grocery trip then headed off to the gym to work off some of the annoyance.  Deadlift day is always good for that, it's by far my favourite lift!  The worksets for that were:

65kg x3

75kg x3

85kh x3+ (I did 6)

After that the OHP, which felt a bit more natural this week.  The worksets for that one were:

30kg x3

32.5kg kx

37.5kg x3+ (I did 6).

Then did bent-over DB row as my accessory lift - 5x10 @ 15kg.  Put the weight up slightly this week and everything was burning at the end of the last set so I think I've found the right one.  Gonna keep it the same next week.

Good news on the job front - I have an interview on 18th for a position which would involve working from home, which would work out perfectly for me!  Gonna keep getting other applications until then just in case though.  So the plan for the rest of this week is to finally get this Excel course finished so I can spend next week studying and prepping for the interview - not worked since March so probably a bit rusty...

Tonight there shall be rum & wine though.  An interview invite warrants celebrating.

Thursday weight: 118.9 kg - glad that came back down again today, but still wish it was lower.  Going to be very careful about my calories this week.

Wednesday steps: 6838 (162 under target for the week) - going for an extra walk later on today to bump this score up a bit.  Especially as the weekend's supposed to get properly hot, which might limit the amount of time we can be bothered to go out and be active

Wednesday calories: 2731 (112 over target for the week) - the rums and malbec didn't affect my day's total too badly after all.  Not drinking today so that should more than compensate for the surplus, and set me up with a nice deficitin case there are any extra drinks at the weekend.

This morning was simply half an hour on the bike, with walks scheduled in for later on.  My main plan for the day is to sit and plough through as much of this Excel course as possible - I'm on to the last section and want to finish it by the end of the week.  This bit's mainly about macros and VBA, which I have never used and should therefore be fun to figure out.   I've been able to use the knowledge I've learned helping the Welshman out over the last few days, playing with the data he gets from reports at work and turning it into more useful tables and charts.  I'm hoping this section will teach me how to automate most of it for him for future use.

Right, time to crack on with my learning!
