Ranger Hal Posted July 28, 2020 Report Share Posted July 28, 2020 I have never done a pull up on my own. I did recreational level gymnastics as a kid and we had these checklists of skills. We needed to get all the skills checked off before moving to the next list (level). There were pull ups on some of the lists (we called them chin ups, but they were palms facing outward) and somehow I got them checked off, but I never actually did a pull up without assistance. My theory is that the instructors felt sorry for me and checked it off, even though I couldn't quite do the skill on my own. It was recreational gymnastics after all, not like I was going to be at a disadvantage later in a competition because I couldn't actually do pull ups. But 20+ years later, it still bugs me that those pull ups got checked off when I have still never done one. So when NF sent an email announcing a Chin Up Challenge, I decided to go for it except that I'm going to do pull ups, because I always thought that palm facing in was weird (possibly a leftover from gymnastics classes?) and pull ups put my arms in the same direction as when I'm climbing, so it seems like pull ups would directly improve my climbing strength as well. I think the NF Challenge is supposed to run seven weeks which will put it past the end of this challenge, but that's okay. I'm kind of excited that I may finally be able to do a pull up! I also want to get back into hiking on weeknights. My hiking group still isn't arranging our weekly hike (thanks Covid). It was easier to get out when I was going with other people, but I can still go on my own. And I need to practice knots for climbing and rigging. It's been way too long since I did that (we're not doing training right now, also thanks Covid) and if I don't start practicing, I'm going to be in trouble the next time I actually need the knots. Edit: I almost forgot, I want to do the DailyDare thing too. I can actually do a chin up, but I've been plateaud at 1 for forever, so I'm hoping to be able to do a solid two chin ups. However, it ended up being short, so I threw a few things in a pack and went to find a geocache. I had hiked up the steep part when I realized that my gps's micro SD card (I keep all the geocache info on it instead of in the internal memory) was back at the car. It wasn't that far, so I went back to get it. On the way up again, I tried multiple times to get the geocaches to load, but they wouldn't. Oh well, even if I couldn't search for the geocache, going up the hill twice meant it was more of a hike than I expected (although still short). At home, I discovered that the reason the geocaches wouldn't load was because someone had deleted them all(most likely the SAR people who were downloading tracks to my gps over the weekend). Yeah, I need to work on the cleaning thing. The last couple of days, I've gotten to the end of the day, realized I hadn't done any cleaning, but by that point I was tired and didn't want to. Sounds like me. Is there something in your day that you could anchor the cleaning to? Like, "While I make my coffee I will tidy up a little" or something like that? I think at least part of my problem is that I look at the cleaning I should be doing and just don't do it. Since I have to be up early tomorrow and it's already late, I'm not going to worry about knots tonight.
