Families like my mom that really loved helping a dog become a dad or a mom. My mom played midwife to both her male dog's pups (the one she got before I was born) and our two female ones. And really enjoyed helping the pups and the mom, careful not to get her scent on them, protecting the pups from the suspicious moms etc.etc. & vetted new owners as if she was seeking a foster home for human children. ✔

 

Just in defense of getting a baby pup or kitten. You are not always supporting mills or breeders. Not everyone is fit to do the emotional work involved with taking over an older shelter pet. And the fact you are guaranteed for it to have less life left than when bringing up a young one. (Not to mention the medical bills - i.e. having financial means and time to go to vets - if you knów it has conditions or is likely to have given its history.) I wonder what I am missing. Always an interesting discussion.

 

The parents of a friend of mine always took in some cat with a condition, (like blindness) and she worked in an animal shelter and constantly had to stop herself from adopting ALL THE PETS haha. So sweet to see. I got used to a house without pets and do not think I will get one. So I enjoy other people's pets. My sis has been promised one once she turns 8 and we are already training her to be aware of habits. Like in the morning: When you have a pet now would be the time to take him for a walk, whether you feel like it or not. Etc. She is still excited. I am curious how responsible she will be   (of course with help & my mom will definitely make sure everything is cared for.) You never know!

Oof to the pet deposit. My family only got shelter pets when we were growing up, and they are some of the sweetest, most loving pets you can have. Much better than supporting mills or breeders, imo.

Meh, I think it is a one time deposit, but we'll see, I am currently not equipped to take care of any animals at the moment, so I'm ok with just flying solo right now.

Oh, and I also officially signed the papers to submit my application for the apartment! I only have to pay the move-in fees, set up Electricity, internet and Gas, and I'll be officially on my way to moving in!

* If you guys are both foodies: what are you considering making for dinner? Fave easy dinner?

 

* random things that come up during the day. "You know, I just remembered this thing and I have been really looking forward to sharing with you." And ask her about something as well. (Does not work if you are always focused on what you are doing all the non-break time but this one works for me.)

 

* Discussing places you would like to go together.

 

* Discuss (fun?) things you see around you if you are sitting to eat your lunch somewhere in a parkkk or where you can people watch? 

 

* I like hearing about my partner's work "problems", cases etc. & being asked about mine. Though we work in the same field. But I like hearing about simple versions of what other people are doing outside of my field as well. Especially if they are excited about what they are doing! 

 

* You know... The weather and the clothing you both wear to deal with it is also an acceptable topic. It's just nice to hear the other person's voice in the middle of your day, I think.

That did give me some inspiration! Thank you! In terms of the hearing the other's problems, I have to keep my self in check, because I want to solve her problems and she don't need no man to tell her what to do!

There is a lot of truth to this. The guy mentality is often "I hear problem -> I solve problem" and you're right in that that's not always the best thing. Just listening and offering "That sucks" or "That's awesome!" is often enough. It is, however, not a bad thing to occasionally say "dude, I would totally _______ in that situation." If, ya know, she's a dude sort of person.  Otherwise, change that part.

When we were in high school, there was a guy who was CLEARLY infatuated with my older sister. Did the same hobbies, same group of friends, he was always hanging out with and around her, but they never dated. I asked her (much later) why that was, and she said "If he never had the courage to ask me out, then we would not have been a good couple." 

 

That said, nine years ago I visited a guy who I'd been talking with and he was obviously head-over-heels and oblivious to the fact that it was obvious. I asked him out because in one of our talks, he mentioned not wanting to pressure someone else into making a decision, which I felt was a fair attitude. I still sometimes have to nudge him to ask questions he thinks might be invasive, but since we got married a couple months ago, I'd say it turned out well. Good to have standards, but there are occasional exceptions. Pardon my ramble.

Could you explain how this is an exception? 😊 Your husband does not sound like the type of guy that "wasted/s your time" or is a weakling at all! 

 

People who ask invasive questions or have a super direct "I am going to get her to be my girlfriend" attitude are not bad per se but I have had some experiences/heard stories of such people still being the type that I would call "people wasting my time"

 

My current partner asked me out on a friend/acquienfence level date but I was the one that made into a date-date. Once he got the green light he did not play games, did not waste my time. (Nor did I haha)

 

On the flip side, there was one guy who asked me out & even after I had a discussion with him about whether we are on the same page, still kept playing games. (By that I mean, pushing and pulling and trying to blame me for being unable to emotionally pace myself until I lawyered him - Exhibit A, B, ... Z - into admitting I was not doing any such thing.) Some people enjoy that type of tango but I don't. Especially then I really overanalysed err'thing that was not people just being frank & direct with me, hurtful or not. Did not and do not have time for that 😅

 

PS - Oh dear, there are so many awesome people on here! 😭 Thanks for sharing that story!

Oh definitely not, but I'd adopted the "if he won't ask, I won't date him" standard, we'd both have missed out! And some of the questions he has thought were invasive in the past were things like "would you mind if i came with you to x thing?" when I'm oblivious and didn't even think to ask. We've found a balance between my antisocialism and his leaving people alone over the years.

Oh HECK no. I had an ex who basically required 3 conversations for every topic - one to discuss the topic, one to discuss what I really meant in my discussion, and the third to discuss how I was wrong about my perception of how I'd discussed it originally. Ain't nobody got time for that nonsense. If you can't trust what someone says the first time, leave.
