Darkfoxx 68: Adjusting, Adjusting, Ever Adjusting

Recommended Posts

Continuing on in my ‘the only constant is change’ theme of the past few years ....

We are in Phase 4 Part 1 of lockdown where I live (maaaaaybe opening to Phase 2 next week?).

  • Malls are open with no restrictions but kids’ play areas and entertainments being closed (mall restaurants are limited to 30% capacity) - fitting rooms are open again and kids are allowed back into the mall
  • Cinemas are open for very limited capacity
  • Gyms are open with restrictions
  • Mosques are open with restrictions
  • Restaurants are open for parties of 5 or less unless single-household - some are at 100% (new) capacity; some are still at 30% depending upon government approval (still no buffets or shisha - which is actually kind of funny: there was a move to ban shisha a couple years ago that met with huge local pushback)
  • Offices are up to 80% capacity
  • Water sports are back
  • Home care services are back with testing
  • Spas, health clubs and indoor pools are back at 30% capacity
  • Beauty centers are open at 50% capacity

General guidelines for out of the house remain at: masks everywhere, hand sanitizer everywhere, temperature and green status health app checks when entering all buildings but home, social distancing

This last few weeks has seen an influx of people returning from either being stuck abroad or taking their Summer holiday at home per usual and returning for school. Schools are staggered at lots of home time + a little classroom time for limited numbers of students per day.

As of yesterday, September 4, we are sticking at around 150-200 new cases daily, which is good. We shall see what happens in the next 2 weeks to a month when people that are coming back leave quarantine (which is a mix of home and hotel). There were 4 people arrested yesterday for breaking home quarantine.

My routine is currently in flux again because my gym is closed due to deep cleaning because of COVID exposure. Hoping by the time challenge starts it’ll be open again. Hoping that by the time Zero Week starts it’ll be open, but that may be optimistic.

My goals aren’t really updating from last cycle.

Goal 1: Fuel my body in a way that brings me joy and moves me closer to my goals

This is actually harder than one would think. Getting back to a regular yoga practice last cycle has me wanting more and more veggies and lighter meals. My gut disagrees with that assessment for the most part (my favorite veggies are off the table if I want a happy gut). Lighter meals are definitely possible, and I’ve already put the brakes on eating like crap during the weekends a bit. I‘my not back to my ‘all no all the time’ ways, but I’m not okaying or suggesting weekend BS either. Mostly.

This Cycle I’m focusing on:

  • Eating more veggies (that don’t kill my gut)
  • Continuing down the less-meat path, but also less fake meat
  • Focusing on smaller portions
  • Not eating garbage during the weekends
  • Making sure I have emergency food on hand that isn’t chips
  • re-re-re conceptualizing meal times to incorporate more nutrient dense options but not necessarily going back to paleo (ie I’m not ready to give up sushi rice bowls, I just need to make sure I’m getting more actual nutrition than lotsa carbs + fat + some herbs)
  • Not discounting fancy hippie food out of hand - I used to love making this shit, but stopped when I moved because nothing was ever available locally. There is a lot more selection nowadays.

I’m also toying with the idea of going back to macro counting. I was at my healthiest and had my best relationship with food when I was eating paleo and tracking macros. (Minus gut issues. The death farts were real, but at least came without ripping pain). Since I’m not eating out anywhere near the amount I was pre-Covid this should be totally doable. I just might not like what I see. Which will also help with portioning 100%.

Fitness

Fingers crossed that I can get back into the studio and that the schedule they had set holds. If so, continue on with my 4x a week yoga classes and walking to and from. 1 day off a week to chill and hibernate is good.

If not, I’ll sign up for more Zoom classes from the other gym - or go in person, though that would necessitate Uber trips instead of walking and I don’t know if I’m there yet.

Feeding My Non-Food Needs

  • Continue to work on a main project + busywork projects + Animal Crossing + coloring
  • Set a deadline and actually make myself take 1 Skillshare class on something with no pressure to apply that knowledge
  • Continue checking in with y’all mostly daily
  • Continue on with 1 dinner a month with friends
  • Continue taking 1 morning each week (currently Tuesdays when the dogs are at daycare) to spend some time out of the house doing something else like getting breakfast in preparation for rejoining the demands of being social, and sitting with that to see how it feels before deciding if i want to return to my social life at all. Examining what feeds me v what drains me. What anxiety is my brain being an asshole and what anxiety provides room for growth.

Current projects:

  • An exploded Ohio Star quilt for my Dad
  • Sew House 7 Tea Dress in black cotton lawn (the shirt version, not the whole dress)
  • Braided cable experiments with the lucet fork
  • Knit lace experiments with quilting cotton
  • Busywork knit shawl I don’t really even like anymore
  • Maybe macrame that looks like lace with that quilting cotton?
  • Finding something to do with the printed lawn cotton I bought
  • Blackwork embroidery - probably handkerchiefs for gifts
  • That smocking dress I have in my head if I find the right fabric and tutorial
  • Finishing the fruit tree grove on my island (Animal Crossing)
  • Finishing the Overlook Hotel on my island
  • Finishing the beach resort on my island
  • Finishing the witchy studio on my island
  • Figuring out what to do with the area surrounding my house on my island

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnd, now I’m in “voluntary” government-mandated 14-day quarantine.

Seems that the network my gym is a part of is at the heart of an infection cluster. Not sure if the yoga studio has been affected, but it stands to reason that it might - people travel between gyms, as do some staff. And staff travels out of this network to other studios and private clients.

I got a call from the Ministry of Health this morning (which has my redneck brain all up in a lather) instructing me to report for testing today. Which I did, after having to walk about the length of a football field in the direct sun (luckily it was only 103F today and not crazy crazy humid), and wandering all over a stadium thing trying to find the right hall. Super fun and not anxiety inducing At. All.

So. Got my test done, had to sign paperwork stating that I would comply with the government-mandated quarantine, and should find out my results within 24 hours + if DH also has to quarantine.

Also got an email from the Zoom gym throwing some shade at my gym (which is warranted - most people were behaving, but there were definite exceptions that bothered me happening), and re-stating all the precautions they’re taking. Good thing I signed up for the Zoom package last week when it was looking like the gym was just closed.

Bummer, but I’m sure I’ll be fine and will keep y’all posted. I’ve ordered delivery groceries and am swimming in veggies + salmon since orders are placed by the kilo. DH has also figured out how to get me Dr. Who so I can catch up on that. And he’s plotting which additional Switch games to attempt to get me hooked on.

Good thing we hit the fabric store last weekend, so I have crafts to do!

—-

Monday

Was fine. Zoom yoga, hung out around the house, food was pretty good - oatmeal for breakfast, Uncle Ben’s curry pot for lunch, hummus chips for a snack, dinner was a cobbled-together ramen bowl of chili tuna, bok choy, mushroom and chives. I think my GI system has finally gotten over the small amount of broccoli I ate on Saturday (I know ... I know .... but broccoli is one of my 5 favorite foods ....)

I can’t remember what I worked on, but I think I finished cutting the background squares for the quilt I’m making. Pretty sure that was yesterday.

That sounds like a really sucky start to the week! Fingers crossed for happy negative test results!

With that craft list, I have to follow.

I hope you get your results soon. Waiting and not knowing sucks. Glad that you've got crafts, Switch, and Zoom gym to help you pass the time.

It was slightly terrifying. More that the government was calling than the testing - I had a feeling that was coming. Made me want to grab a tinfoil hat and a shotgun. Poor woman who called - I have phone bitch voice because I hate it so much, and she didn’t need that level of distracted hostility - distracted because I was trying to: hold my towel on, apply face cream, and listen for the door.

Me. Too.

Update from yesterday: All group classes are cancelled country-wide, social distance in the gyms for things like open gym have been increased, everyone has to remain masked while working out, and more disinfectant use is mandated.

I’m trying to figure out exactly how irked I am at my gym (especially v the online gym I’m doing classes with who seem to have their shit together more), and what this is going to mean moving forward. I can totally go to second gym in the winters - it’s a 35 minute walk from the house - but I was really really liking being able to walk to the gym in the Summer. That’s not going to be possible to Gym 2: not only is it further, the whole last half is in the sun with no shade. Realistically, I won’t walk it much in the winter, either - it’s kind of a pain in the ass walk. Will probably do it back, but will most likely Uber there.

As my favorite instructor said this morning, quit worrying over things that haven’t happened yet.

Week: 0, Tuesday

Quarantine Status:

Qatar has shifted to Phase 4 Part 1. Life is more-or-less returning back to some semblance of normal, with restrictions. Gyms are back on the table, malls are back to fully open, and restaurants for groups of 5 are a go. All masked and with social distancing, normal body temperature and green status on your tracker app.

I, on the other hand am now stuck in government-mandated home quarantine till mid-ish challenge due to my gym network networking itself into being a new case cluster. Whoo. So I’m back to #quarantinelife but not #quarantinedontcare life.

Nutrition

Goals here: smaller portions, less meat, more veggies, nutrient dense food options, no GI issues

Breakfast:  Egg/avocado/beef bacon wrap with a green juice

Lunch:  Mixed nuts

Dinner:  Salmon with roasted potatoes and cherry tomatoes

Snacks:  None

Did I eat like an asshole? Nope

Did anything try to kill me? Nope

Did I eat a vegetable? How much? Yep - a little - about 1/3 a cup of cherry tomatoes

Did I drink enough water? Yep

Support and Connection

Goal here: Support my Herd, and keeping touch with friends online for now; hopefully going back to taking a morning out of the house alone + 1 dinner a month out with friends later

Did I support my Herd? Yep

Did I interact with “IRL” humans? Unfortunately

Feed My Sense Of Well-being

Goal here: Main craft project, Side project, do a damn Skillshare class

What did I learn today? All about COVID testing. And maybe how to find the testing center in the midst of a massive sports complex - or not - I don’t know if I could find it again easily. Good thing I got there with plenty of time to spare before they closed midday.

What was my project today? Layed out my quilt rows to make sure everything made sense  and I had enough squares. I think it will and I did.

Activity

Goals here: 3-4x a week classes, either through Zoom while in quarantine or combined with walks to and from the gym if I feel like that’s a wise choice post-quarantine

This week’s projected schedule: Monday Warrior Flow (Zoom), Tuesday off, Wednesday Monk Foundations (Zoom), Thursday Yoga Shred (Zoom), Friday Warrior Monk (Zoom), Saturday/Sunday off

Did I accomplish my fitness goal for the day? Good thing today was a scheduled off day. There was a zero percent chance I was going to come home and be able to calm down enough for yoga.

Still waiting on word from the Ministry. My tracker app still shows a green health status, so that’s good. Ish. Shouldn’t it be showing quarantine ... ?

Nutrition

Goals here: smaller portions, less meat, more veggies, nutrient dense food options, no GI issues

Breakfast:  Me-made bread (flaxseed, chia, half wheat/half white flour) + butter and rhubarb jam

Lunch:  My eating schedule is already off and it’s only Day 1 of quarantine - didn’t want lunch until 3pm - had some roasted potatoes, sautéed mushroom and chives in a snack bowl

Dinner:  Zucchini pancake, 2 fried eggs, about 2 ounces baked salmon, the rest of the mushrooms (about 2 Tbsp.) and more chives

Snacks:  A snack bowl of hummus chips

Did I eat like an asshole? Not especially

Did anything try to kill me? Not really

Did I eat a vegetable? How much? Yep. Dinner had about 1/4 of a cup of shredded zucchini; all told I had about 1/3 of a cup of mushrooms

Did I drink enough water? Yep

Support and Connection

Goal here: Support my Herd, and keeping touch with friends online for now; hopefully going back to taking a morning out of the house alone + 1 dinner a month out with friends later

What did I learn today? Dunno

What was my project today? Sewed 5 out of 20 quilt strips

Yep! Did my Zoom class and it was tiring. I much prefer yoga-ing on hardwood vs the ceramic tiles we have. That shit is hard.

Thx!

Animal Crossing was one of my Lockdown Part 1 creative outlets and I’m engrossed. Not playing for most of the day like I was back then, but am still plugging an hour or two a day away. I’ve got my island about 90% finished and may or may not hop onto one of the way too many AC Reddit/Discord forums I’m on to swap for the rest of the big items I need to finish. Still waiting on some inspo for the last little bits that aren’t finished yet.

Nutrition

Goals here: smaller portions, less meat, more veggies, nutrient dense food options, no GI issues

Breakfast:  Me-made white/wheat/seeded bread + butter & rhubarb jam

Lunch:  Another day I wasn’t hungry until 3 - had the last of my hummus chips

Dinner:  Dashi stock rice + enoki mushrooms + sautéed spinach + sautéed bok choy + leftover salmon + pickled ginger

Snacks:  None

Did I eat like an asshole? eh. Breakfast was a bit heavy, I think - could also be the flax in the bread

Did anything try to kill me? Not as such

Did I eat a vegetable? How much? Yep! Not until dinner, but still yep. Maybe a half cup of the dinner veg

Did I drink enough water? Yep

Support and Connection

Goal here: Support my Herd, and keeping touch with friends online for now; hopefully going back to taking a morning out of the house alone + 1 dinner a month out with friends later

What did I learn today? Ummmmmm

What was my project today? Finished another quilt row, Crossed Animals, colored a bit, researched Skillshare classes

Yep! Yoga Shred was great. It’s an instructor I haven’t been able to see in quite awhile. The class is vinyasa with 3 HIIT periods in the middle. Quite good.

Also got my COVID test result back and it was negative. I’m still in quarantine till the 17th, but at least I haven’t been running around like Typhoid Mary.

Nutrition

Goals here: smaller portions, less meat, more veggies, nutrient dense food options, no GI issues

Breakfast:  1 slice of the homemade bread, which seemed to be a better portion because I was hungry-ish for lunch on time

Lunch:  The leftover dashi rice stuffs

Dinner:  Ummm ... Oh yeah. Leftover zucchini pancakes, the last of the cherry tomatoes (pan sautéed) and eggs - cooked in my pressed cast iron pan, which I’m happy to say after only a few uses has enough seasoning on it that my eggs didn’t stick terribly

Snacks:  A hand full of cherry tomatoes

Did I eat like an asshole? Nope

Did anything try to kill me? Yep. No idea what gave me stomach cramps, but I suspect it had something to do with the zucchini pancakes. Maybe the fact they were shallow fried? I’m not leaning into zucchini as a culprit; I’ve got the rest of a kilo to go through

Did I eat a vegetable? How much? Yep! About half a cup mixed bok choy and spinach at lunch and about 2/3 of a cup to a cup zucchini + tomatoes at dinner and half a cup of tomatoes for a snack

Did I drink enough water? Yep

Support and Connection

Goal here: Support my Herd, and keeping touch with friends online for now; hopefully going back to taking a morning out of the house alone + 1 dinner a month out with friends later

What was my project today? Another 5 rows of quilt squares joined, coloring, animal crossing

Yep! Had a good flow and a really stable tripod going on despite the pups exuberantly playing with a rope toy on and about my person.

In other news, my health tracker app finally turned yellow for quarantine. I was beginning to wonder if it was ever going to turn, and I’m kind of glad it did. I have way too much damn integrity to break a quarantine I agreed to comply with, but even from a short convo with friends it was clear that all of them may not - using the fact that the app was still green as a sign that they weren’t really in quarantine.

If the people that keep getting arrested for breaking quarantine (they’re naming and shaming them online too, which is great given the cultural prevalence for shame-based compliance) - even locals - have similar situations, I can see how that would be confusing if one were not a stickler for FolloWIng ThEIr OwN SeT Of RUles. Fingers crossed that this sucker turns back to green on the 18th!

Week 0: Weekend

Weekend was fine. Sunday we were actually social - Zoomed with our friends that just had a baby. Food was eh - lots of delivery. Finally tried Jollibee and I’m glad I’ve gotten that out of the way. It was ... interesting. Some of it was actually tasty. Crossed Animals, watched a few movies. Finished Season 2 of the Rain on Netflix.

Ummm ... probably no. I got one of the combo meals to try a bunch of shit. My meal was approx $5.50, and included:

1 fried drumstick - It was ok. I prefer other chicken restaurant chicken. I’d say KFC, but I’ve heard KFC sucks here. I haven’t actually eaten there in years and years. So, the memory of KFC is better.

Spaghetti with a sweet sauce that I think had hotdogs and maybe ground beef in it - This immediately had me thinking of knockoff-of-the-store-brand Chef Boyardee.

Macaroni soup(?) - a really nice cream of chicken style broth with a small amount of overcooked macaroni noodles and 1 chunk of canned chicken.

1 legit unsliced hamburger bun - Which was gross. It tasted like a big no-name hamburger bun, but I’m not a fan of those apparently when not accompanied by fillings.

1 cup of buttered canned corn - Yum. Canned corn sucks but it’s nostalgic.

1 small cup beefy gravy - Also yum.

1 small cup chickeny gravy - Yum too.

1 small hamburger patty topped with canned mushrooms - The meat was actually well seasoned and this was pretty good.

1 small side fries - Not the best fries I’ve ever had by far.

So much food for so little cash. And that bee .... And his little dance ....

So. Some good things, but not enough to run back. The cheese sauce on DH’s fries was also sweet and vile. Now, were they offering a bee figurine ....

Lunch:  Leftover zucchini pancake with fried eggs

Dinner:  Roasted zucchini + salami + tofu tomato sauce stacks

Snacks:  Kettelcorn

Did I eat like an asshole? Not especially

Did anything try to kill me? Had some pain but don’t know why; the peppers in the sauce had me worried for a minute, but the pepper smells seem to have died down since

Did I eat a vegetable? How much? Yes! About 1/3 of a cup of zucchini at lunch and about 1/2 a cup of eggplant + 1/4 a cup of tomato/pepper sauce at dinner

Did I drink enough water?  I think so

Support and Connection

Goal here: Support my Herd, and keeping touch with friends online for now; hopefully going back to taking a morning out of the house alone + 1 dinner a month out with friends later

Did I support my Herd? Yep

Did I interact with “IRL” humans? Kinda? We had a bitch session about quarantine after yoga - 3 of us are in quarantine because of the gym; 1 was in quarantine from traveling to the UK. We are deciding how unhappy we are with our other yoga studio’s lack of response or attempt to foster a sense of community - especially in light of how well our Zoom gym is doing the same.

Feed My Sense Of Well-being

It continues to fascinate me that virtual meetings are so effective for connecting people. It doesn't meet our innate human need for physical contact or in-person contact, but as far as making people feel a part of a community and not as isolated, online relationships apparently work perfectly fine. Who knew?

Spoiler

Uh, we did. We nerds who had online friends and relationships long before the pandemic made it cool. 😛
