Darkfoxx 68: Adjusting, Adjusting, Ever Adjusting

Week: 1, Tuesday

 

Quarantine Status:

Qatar has shifted to Phase 4 Part 1. Life is more-or-less returning back to some semblance of normal, with restrictions. Gyms are back on the table, (gyms have now rolled back to being closed for all group classes and more restrictions for in-person trainer sessions and open gyms have been put into place) malls are back to fully open, movie theaters are open, and restaurants for groups of 5 are a go. All masked and with social distancing, normal body temperature and green status on your tracker app.

I, on the other hand am now stuck in government-mandated home quarantine till mid-ish challenge due to my gym network networking itself into being a new case cluster. Whoo. So I’m back to #quarantinelife but not #quarantinedontcare life.

 

Nutrition

Goals here: smaller portions, less meat, more veggies, nutrient dense food options, no GI issues

 

Breakfast:  Skipped

Lunch:  Leftover potatoes, beef short ribs, and a fried egg 

Dinner:  Salmon Thai coconut curry with zoodles 

Snacks:  The last of my me-made white/wheat/chia/flaxseed bread with a little butter and marmite. I think I like Vegemite better. 

 

Did I eat like an asshole? Not especially

Did anything try to kill me? I do remember some stabby stabby but I don’t remember when 

Did I eat a vegetable? How much? Yes! Zucchini and peppers at dinner - about a cup 

Did I drink enough water? Yep

 

Support and Connection

Goal here: Support my Herd, and keeping touch with friends online for now; hopefully going back to taking a morning out of the house alone + 1 dinner a month out with friends later

 

Did I support my Herd? Yep

Did I interact with “IRL” humans? Nope

 

Feed My Sense Of Well-being

Goal here: Main craft project, Side project, do a damn Skillshare class

 

What did I learn today? Don’t remember 

What was my project today? Got the front of my quilt pieced together 

 

Activity

Goals here: 3-4x a week classes, either through Zoom while in quarantine or combined with walks to and from the gym if I feel like that’s a wise choice post-quarantine

 

This week’s projected schedule: Monday Warrior Flow (Zoom), Tuesday Serene Monk (Zoom), Wednesday Monk Foundations (Zoom), Thursday Yoga Shred (Zoom), Friday Warrior Monk (Zoom), Saturday/Sunday off

Did I accomplish my fitness goal for the day? Yes! Serene Monk, my ass. I was all excited for a nice, relaxing Yin class and Bam! My crazy pants teacher. I should have known, given who was on the schedule ... but this was anything but yin. We worked on headstands a bit and lots of wild thing-to-wheel transitions. Some day this will happen for me. I suppose it could now, but I’m wary of falling and more of a weenie when it comes to Zoom classes. The instructor also called me out, trying to recruit me for the handstands class she teaches at 5:30. Were I not so opposed to evening classes, I’d be there - body be damned. 

 

Also had more of a chat today (Wednesday) with my favorite instructor/the manager of the Zoom gym re: moving forward when classes open back up and whether that is going to be with Nita or no - encouraged her team on what they are doing to foster community throughout this year, told her my moral conundrum of comfort v voting with my dollar, and that her gym could very well turn into a time suck for me. It’s right up my alley - HIIT, yoga, weightlifting, metrics, smoothie bar.... it kind of has it all. Minus probably rucking; but my shoulder has noped out of that, so ... we had a chuckle about how quickly I’d end up going over to the “dark side” and what that might mean re: injury aggravation. She seems to have more confidence in my ability to not injure myself further or in new and creative ways than I do. I know I’m a dumbass who refuses to quit being stubborn when it comes to injury. And that my body goes from ‘this is fine’ to ‘broken for weeks to months’ in the span of 3 seconds. 

 

We shall see. I’ll definitely be checking the in-person classes out when that opens back up at her gym; still on the fence as to whether I’ll go back to the other - I do have a lot of class credit with them because of a happy trigger finger on the buy it now button on the app, but I could just use that up a class a week at a time on Tuesdays to pick the dogs up ... most of my other favorite teachers are at both gyms but the Tuesday Functional Fitness one.

Did anything try to kill me? I don’t think so

Did I eat a vegetable? How much? Yep! Dinner had about a cup of veggies in it 

Did I drink enough water? I think so

 

Support and Connection

Did I accomplish my fitness goal for the day? Yes! My foundations class was good. Can’t remember what exactly we worked on, but I was in pain all night - woof. Standing for 3 hours - even in my croc sandals - on these hard floors is rough. Especially with sore muscles from yogas. Was looking for a rest day in the latter half of the week, but I don’t have a throwaway class in the roster, so ...

Weeeeeel. Totally forgot that I cancelled my Skillshare account after not using it as much as I wanted to last year. I have taken classes on mobile Lightroom, and some crap sewing classes. I had a thought to do some watercolor classes, and *should* do something useful like blog shit. 

 

Barring that all, I may do a deep dive on something photography related because I do actually know how to take quite good photos. Not like I’ve actually picked my “real” camera up in years, though - and I pretty much take daily life snaps with my phone. Some have some good framing, but I’m lazy. And too impatient to make myself actually sit down and edit shots. So maybe a course will help spark my passion for that again. 

 

I just watched a video on selfies posted by Glam & Gore and that was a quite good semi-tutorial. And a good reminder that I can do shit like that. Haaaaate selfies, but maybe that’s something I can work on internal headspace-wise.

Oops. I blame my hand sewing. This quilt is huge and rests right on my iPad. 

 

The rest of the week was fine - my tracker app *finally* turned green Saturday. I was supposed to be off quarantine Friday, but it was still yellow - then an update pushed and kind of broke the app to show a question mark. Uninstalled/reinstalled Saturday and it finally turned green so I could leave the house. 

 

Mailed Sunday and it killed my hip. Fun. 

 

Food was too plentiful during the weekend, but it was good at least. Friday was Indian street food, Saturday was Indian kinda street food, Sunday was a club sandwich at a French place. 

 

Didn’t do much more than mall and watch movies all weekend. 

 

Did all my 5 yoga classes during the week.

Monday

 

Breakfast was a leftover parata purposely ordered over the weekend so I could slap a fried egg into it

 

Lunch was leftover idly (mental note: idly doesn’t reheat the best) + leftover whatever the hell the other dish that feels like Indian stoner food is I ordered over the weekend

 

Dinner was back to a Beyond Burger Monday with me-made white/wheat bread in weird slices because I forgot to pinch some off to make rolls, Chick-fil-A sauce & some weirdo chips that sounded like they’d be Fritos but we’re not. Maybe baked? 
 

Zoom yoga was great, but I felt kinda weak overall. My wrists are bugging me and that hip pain from Sunday continued on in a big way during a stretch that should have felt nice. My Pigeon was shallow, too, so I’m guessing I’ve locked something up. My neck is feeling it too. 
 

so. Go easy this week. Modify as needed. Take water breaks. 
 

 Got another 2 rows of quilting done - aaaand bent a second needle. Oops. 
 

caught up on Raised By Wolves and almost up on Lovecraft Country. Continued on with the Audible book on English history I’m listening to. Did a quick scan of photography lessons on YouTube.

Breakfast:  Took myself out for a lackluster in taste but not in feel breakfast at a cafe - poached eggs, kinda icky roll, turkey bacon - could have used ketchup or mustard for taste 

Lunch:  A sweet supposed to be pork bun that I believe is Philippino in origin 

Dinner:  Cheeseless chicken enchilada rice bake

Snacks:  Garlic corn nuts, also I believe from the Philippines. They tasted like a different corn than US corn nuts and were glorious. Had to get in on that action before DH snarfed the entire bag 

 

Did I eat like an asshole? Nope

Did anything try to kill me? Nope 

Did I eat a vegetable? How much? Ish. Had some tomato in the sauce and peppers in the bake - only about 1/4 of a cup total 

Did I drink enough water? I think so

What was my project today? Hand quilting - I’m now about halfway through. Whoo.

This week’s projected schedule: Monday Warrior Flow (Zoom), Tuesday Handstand practice (Zoom), Wednesday Monk Foundations (Zoom), Thursday Yoga Shred (Zoom), Friday Warrior Monk (Zoom), Saturday/Sunday off

Did I accomplish my fitness goal for the day? Yep! Handstand practice was good. I overdid it with my wrist during class. Spoiler: Couldn’t sleep for shit and am wearing a brace today (Wednesday). Class was fun, though. Next time I’ll be smarter and do forearm stands. 

 

I also may need to take a rest day on Thursday. I love my HIIT yoga shred class, but I don’t trust that instructor as much (mainly because I don’t know her as well - I know i can take modifications and I did today. I’ll see how it goes and if I keep waking up in pain again tonight, I’ll bail Wednesday.

Dinner:  Leftover rice from the chicken enchilada bake + ground chicken cooked with taco seasoning + radish, avocado, cherry tomatoes and scallions

Snacks:  Me-made bread with hummus and dill pesto

Did anything try to kill me? Nope

Did I eat a vegetable? How much? Yep - About 1/4 a cup with lunch and 1 cup with dinner

Did I accomplish my fitness goal for the day? Yep. Did my class but on my knuckles or forearms instead of using my wrists. Used my lifting wrist wrap pretty much all day for stability. Rested it as much as possible.

Week: 1, Thursday

 

Quarantine Status:

Qatar has shifted to Phase 4 Part 1. Life is more-or-less returning back to some semblance of normal, with restrictions. Gyms are back on the table, (gyms have now rolled back to being closed for all group classes and more restrictions for in-person trainer sessions and open gyms have been put into place) malls are back to fully open, movie theaters are open, and restaurants for groups of 5 are a go. All masked and with social distancing, normal body temperature and green status on your tracker app.

I, on the other hand am now stuck in government-mandated home quarantine till mid-ish challenge due to my gym network networking itself into being a new case cluster. Whoo. So I’m back to #quarantinelife but not #quarantinedontcare life.

Dinner:  Instant ramen packet in some flavor that wasn’t in English with soft boiled egg, radish, scallion, furikake and sesame 

Snacks:  2 rounds of dill pesto hummus bread 

 

Did I eat like an asshole? Ish. My night snack was a heavier than it needed to be 

Did anything try to kill me? Nope 

Did I eat a vegetable? How much? Yep! Lunch had about a cup of veggies, dinner had about a third of a cup 

Did I drink enough water? Yep

What was my project today? Hand quilting, attempted selfie practice and haaaaaaaated all of it. This is definitely something I need to work on - the reasons I hated the pics were not the best. I’m not a fan of my face in non-candid pictures. Certainly something that needs working on. That, and selfies are suuuuuuuuper self indulgent and trip the mother in the back of my head. Also not the best. 

 

Oh, joy, another mental thing to battle. This may end up being a codified goal next cycle, and y’all may be subjected to an avalanche of bad pics in the process.

Did I accomplish my fitness goal for the day? Nope. I bailed on yoga today to give my wrist a little more time to rest. The instructor for this class is more fitness-focused than injury prevention focused which is just my perception; she’s probably actually not, but she’s ripped and has bitch face and almost the same haircut as I do, so I push myself during her classes. I knew I wouldn’t be smart enough to not push it with my wrist - on top of pushing it on Tuesday. 

 

Today was mostly spent on the couch snuggling the pups and listening to true crime podcasts on YouTube while sewing. Not much Animal Crossing, because it was tweaking my wrist.

Yep. I’m choosing to take it as an ‘it’s okay to take care of your body’ win vs ‘this is just an excuse to be lazy’. It’s both, but mostly a self-preservation thing. :)

 

And I’m taking today off, too. DH is working - and he’s going to the gym - but my wrist isn’t actively hurting today (just twinges), so I’ll give it today and tomorrow before Monday’s yoga class.

Sunday update so I can go ahead and alter my template for next week. 

 

Breakfast was a weirdo oatein thing with no added sugar that my body wasn’t fond of. It wasn’t the best, taste-wise - and it had me feeling like I never wanted to eat again despite not having whey protein. Completely forgot to take a picture of it. 

 

Tooled around the was cool but is now dying due to hubris and arrogance mall, searching in vain for the jazzy Metcons DH wanted. Hopped to another, more maligned, mall because none of the food at mall 1 looked good and all the Metcons were boring. 

 

DH gave up after Mall 2 and bought less-than-jazzy Metcons, because that’s what’s available here. Which is a total bummer; DH likes jazzy shoes. Hopefully the function of these ones will make his jacked up foot feel better than the minimalist shoes he currently works out in. 

 

Had half a hot chicken sandwich at Outback for lunch and am still skeeved out by the grease. It was tasty, but my throat feels like it’s trying to close up. I won’t be hungry for dinner. 

 

Got some steps in, tried to buy a wrist wrap but ended up getting one that is so big there is zero way to tighten it enough for my bird bones. Was bummed that the fall candles are not yet out - and that Starbucks Middle East is definitely not getting PSLs. They’re still stuck on Summer cheesecake drinks. Boo.

Ok, fine. I *won’t* paste an update template for yesterday. 

 

The rest of yesterday evening went as planned - finished Ratched and signed up for as many classes as have been posted next week. Looks like we’ve got a lot of substations going on - the main instructor has up and left for the next 2-3 weeks; probably back to the UK. Hoping everything is alright. I think this next week is going to be a 3-4 class week. I have a planned social lunch out with a girlfriend - my first non couple dinner outing in 6 months, and plan on focusing on that Tuesday. If I get back in time for headstand class, great. If not: I’m prioritizing socialization. I may also skip Thursday’s Shred class this week as well, depending on how my wrist is feeling. It’s still not great.

Dinner:  Emergency ramen night came early this week, as I didn’t have enough fixins for anything I want to make this week. Oops.

Snacks:  Another slice pumpernickel with last week’s eggplant hummus and dill pesto

Did anything try to kill me? A bit. I mentioned to DH how happy I was about 1 of the ramen varieties we had - a Korean black bean - and how the beans in it didn’t bug my stomach. Which was just wishful thinking.

Did I drink enough water? Probably. Got up and got a drink in the hour before bed, which I usually don’t do because it takes me more than an hour to drink 500ml of water and I don’t like to leave half-drunk bottles of Crystal Light lying around like a damn hobo. I got over myself and drank about half.

Week: 2, Tuesday

 

Quarantine Status:

Qatar has shifted to Phase 4 Part 2. Life is more-or-less returning back to some semblance of normal, with restrictions. Gyms are back on the table, (gyms have now rolled back to being closed for all group classes and more restrictions for in-person trainer sessions and open gyms have been put into place) malls are back to fully open, movie theaters are open, and restaurants for groups of 5 are a go. All masked and with social distancing, normal body temperature and green status on your tracker app.

I, on the other hand am now stuck in government-mandated home quarantine till mid-ish challenge due to my gym network networking itself into being a new case cluster. Whoo. So I’m back to #quarantinelife but not #quarantinedontcare life.

 

Nutrition

Goals here: smaller portions, less meat, more veggies, nutrient dense food options, no GI issues

 

Base MFP Goals for slow weight loss: 1,260 calories, 20% protein, 50% carbs, 30% fat Week 1 Averages: 1093 calories, 55g protein (18%), 142g carbs (47%), 44g fat (34%) Week 2 Averages: Week 3 Averages: Week 4 Averages: Week 5 Averages:

 

Breakfast:  Out for breakfast at the coffee shop again, and it was meh. Good portion size, though. Had eggs “Benedict” - basically half an herb bagely roll thing with a slice of turkey ham + a poached egg on top - scraped the inexplicable cheese off - and discovered the side dressing thing was supposed to be hollandaise after I finished. Which was fine, I’m not a huge fan of anything but stellar hollandaise anyways. Set me up for lunch

Lunch:  Lunch was out with friends - split 4 appetizers 4 ways: fried soft shell crab, grilled prawn, lobster dumpling and king crab salad. Had 1/2 an ice cream mocha because I didn’t realize it had ice cream inside, aaaaaaaand 3 glasses of wine 

Dinner:  Came home from all that and made emergency noodles. Good thing I picked some up - had a brown butter lemon caper sauce and crumbled some turkey bacon in 

Snacks:  My nightly whiskey diet and split a bag of kettle corn with butter 

 

Did I eat like an asshole? Yep. My body is not a fan of 4 units of alcohol. I tend to wake up anxious in the middle of the night. Was super proud of myself at my lunch portioning though. 

Did anything try to kill me? Not as such, food-wise 

Did I eat a vegetable? How much? Ummmmmm

Did I drink enough water? Probably not 

 

Support and Connection

Goal here: Support my Herd, and keeping touch with friends online for now; hopefully going back to taking a morning out of the house alone + 1 dinner a month out with friends later

 

Did I support my Herd? Yep

Did I interact with “IRL” humans? Yep. I *thought* lunch was just going to be a girlfriend and me, but it turned out to include 2 of the ladies from our coffee group - 1 is utterly exhausting and the other is usually ok. I didn’t die, but I’m still not in a hurry to go back to feeling obligated to hang out with people who exhaust me, regardless of how much said people chase after my ass. Exhausting is now on the ‘how do i adopt a baby, mine don’t need me anymore’ tack. Adoption isn’t a thing here, and isn’t super common as an allowed thing in the Muslim world in general, I don’t think. She’s Egyptian and it isn’t a thing there, either. Which is odd. She’s struggling with some charity tenet and doing what she needs to be doing there since living where we do - luckily, one of the other ladies’ husband is Muslim and was able to point them in the direction of what they do to fulfill that particular directive. She sends donations back to hubby’s home country and extended family to distribute as he directs. It’s an interesting thing. Curious about the no adoption thing, though. She says in Egypt the government puts orphans basically into some sort of trade school so they’ll be able to make a living after they age out of the system and you can kind of function as a big brother/big sister with limited opportunities for temporary fostering - she mentioned taking the kids to movies and the like. I’m interested to learn more. 

 

I’m also contemplating more and more just backing away from the group I run and handing the reigns over to someone else. I’m not a huge fan in life of obligation, and these past 6 months has shown me that I 100% no longer need to force myself weekly into socialization. The only way that was working was by running the group; if i don’t anymore, I won’t go often - which will shrink my friend pool even further as more people leave. So, there’s that. But ... that shit is tedious. And I am not a fan of people in general. I just happen to have lucked up and found a couple I am fond of. 

 

Dilemmas. 

 

Feed My Sense Of Well-being

Goal here: Main craft project, Side project, do a damn Skillshare class

 

What did I learn today? All kinds of shenanigans 

What was my project today? Didn’t do much but cross Animals 

 

Activity

Goals here: 3-4x a week classes, either through Zoom while in quarantine or combined with walks to and from the gym if I feel like that’s a wise choice post-quarantine

 

This week’s projected schedule: Monday Warrior Flow (Zoom), Optional Tuesday Handstand Practice (Zoom), Wednesday Monk Foundations (Zoom), Optional Thursday Yoga Shred (Zoom), Friday Warrior Monk (Zoom), Saturday/Sunday off

Did I accomplish my fitness goal for the day? Was in no shape to hang out upside down; also needed to get dinner going. And I wasn’t able to swap out my too-big wrist brace, so bummer there. The neighborhood pharmacy didn’t have anything that would fit me. I have a feeling this is going to be a long search. Not surprising. 

 

I’m also kind of worried about October’s yoga schedule. Nothing is posted past Wednesday on the site - hoping Thursday and Friday’s classes still happen. If not, I’ll take longer to rest my wrist, but I also don’t want to lose momentum.

Is shrinking the friend pool a bad thing? I have a large number of people in my life who automatically (subconsciously) put a moral judgement on meeting friends IRL, compared to hanging out with friends online. As you contemplate this, I would urge you to at all costs avoid thinking of online friends as "good" and IRL friends as "better" simply because the latter can be physically touched. Think in terms of "good for me", or "works better for me" instead. 

 

Personally I'm firmly in the "quality over quantity" camp when it comes to friends, and since the pandemic started the few people I was becoming friends with IRL have slipped away. I have balanced this by growing closer to my online friends, and I do not feel at all lonely or isolated as a result. I'm not saying that automatically will work for everyone else, of course, but for me it does.

Let me get this straight, you're having to put forth effort to see people you don't care for? Why not just make time for the friends you actually do like and ignore the responsibilities of organizing anything?

When we moved across the planet, I made a conscious effort to throw my introverted previously 100% a hermit ass (like, I only set foot out of the house on weekends with my husband and had zero in-person social network for 10+ years levels of hermit until I joined a book club to force myself into experiencing life off a screen) into social situations - as many as possible - partially to force growth, partially to see how the other half lives, partially to see if I wanted to reinvent myself, and partially to find a support network that a: resides in the same time zone as I do, and b: deals with the same bureaucratic and cultural BS as I do. I can explain things all day, but explanation is no substitute for experience in this case. Bitching with other women and strategizing coping mechanisms can be either cathartic or tedious, depending on the day and how long said women have been in the country. It was definitely necessary the first couple years I was here, as it is with pretty much all the accessory wives.

 

At about the 2/3 year mark, if you’re still here, is when you start to drift off and prioritize other things. Like me with my yoga, and others with volunteering, social clubs or other types of sporting. You find your “tribe” here that makes things more normal for you, you get close and into a routine, they start to move away, and then you start the cycle over again. 

 

I’ve had a largely internet bases friend base since IRC, so I’m good there ;) 

 

As for my pre-Internet IRL friends in opposite time zones who I don’t speak to online, the ones that have stuck around - we speak rarely and that’s been working for us for 15+ years. It’s more difficult with the +8 difference, but if they need me, WhatsApp is great. I end up texting with one of my besties every other week or so or more if either of us are in crisis mode.

More ‘I’ve given myself mostly BS levels of obligation in order to force myself to weed through the junk to find a support network that I like - and that can do something with my dogs if I have to bounce with little notice’. I know myself there - and I won’t keep going to coffee morning or be willing to do social shit if I’m not running the show. Running the show gives my anxiety somewhere to go - and provides some level of accountability, self-imposed as it is. Also, other people are shit at organizing.

 

Would love to be able to hang out with the two friend groups I had going - The best parts of the 1 group has moved away; the one left of the other will eventually venture out of her new mom bubble, but it’ll be awhile. She’s just as much as a hermit as I am.
