I have vague memories of seeing you around before, though I don't think we ever interacted. But I'm gonna say it's good to have you back anyway! Plus, this place looks like somewhere I will be very comfortable, so I'm going to hang around :D

I have abandoned WoW in favour of checking out what FFXIV has to offer, as well as deeping around in Sims 4 and Fallout 4.

I do occasionally get nostalgic for that Shadowrun game you had started up ages ago.

Okay okay okay, can someone explain me WHY everybody is doing something like duolingo? Am i missing something like i did when i found out there is not only poker but also strip-poker?

In the US there aren't a lot of chances to practice using a language other than English. I get to use Spanish a lot due to the proximity to Mexico, but we border exactly two other countries, and one of them primarily speaks English. If someone is from the Interior of the country the distance to another country can be larger than most European countries themselves. People crap on US citizens for only speaking one language, but unless you are in a major metropolitan area with a lot of people from other countries you're really only going to hear English. DuoLingo is a helpful way to learn a language when there aren't a lot of speakers of that language around. Also, most opportunities to learn a language other than English come in High School, where the most common offering is Spanish, but again, there aren't a lot of chances to practice it in the real world unless you live in California, Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas (and then often only in the Southern parts of those states), so even diligent students will lose their skills over time.

Bolded part, is that the sole reason/motivation?

So this answers part of my question. I might have to rephrase, WHY do people want to learn a second language? I really don't feel like learning French or German. I consider my english sufficient that i don't need to study for that. Maybe that satisfies my "need" for a second language.

To give some insight to way this is puzzling me. For example, my friends around me, i'm pretty sure everyone pretty much understands english. Some are pretty proficient in German and/or French. But i can't think of anyone that is actively pursuing mastering another language.

Also, adding to that, many large cities have pretty stark racial segregation by neighborhood in the US (not commenting on whether that's good or bad, just noting it's a thing), so if you're not Latinx, you could go about most of your day to day life without many interactions, if any, with someone who is Latinx (again, not commenting on whether it's good or bad, just noting that it's likely that a good number of native English speakers in the US, even in cities with large numbers of native speakers of other languages, run into primarily other native English speakers in their day to day).

When I lived in Sweden (two different towns, one small and one larger), venturing out of my home either to university campus, public transit, or to the grocery store, would lead to overhearing multiple different languages. In addition, every Swede learns English in school as a minimum, and learning a third language was highly encouraged, since everyone speaks English so that's nothing to brag about on a job application. I learned German.

Then I moved to where I now live in the US, and the only time I ever hear any other language than English is when I seek it out online, or when I leave the country. It feels weird and narrow, and quite unsettling in an echo chamber so of way, to be honest.

And I started duolingo because I wanted to recover my lost German, and then my kitchen drowned and the Chain of Disasters happened, and I stopped. I should start again.

It's fun to learn stuff, and in the U.S. a second language can be a type of status symbol. It can also help with job searches. I know my ability to speak Spanish is a great asset as a hospital chaplain. It helped me go from part time to full time faster than some of my colleagues.

Honestly, even in those LatinX neighborhoods once kids start going to U.S. schools they're gonna pick up English. It's usually only people who came to the U.S. as adults who don't speak English. Even where I am, which is closer to Mexico than other U.S. States, it's very easy to function without speaking Spanish. In fact, I speak better Spanish than a lot of my LatinX contemporaries.
