Jarric
Well I might actually add a proper theme to this at some point, but in the meantime I at least need some proper goals! Muscle - 10XP Track food and hit 150g protein per day. I don't want to cut calories again until I work out if that was why I was feeling light-headed a lot recently, but just tracking gives me some control over my eating without worrying too much about the numbers. The protein goal is to ensure that not all of my calorie are from crap (i.e. beer and chocolate are not going to get me towards my goal!) Wizard - 10XP Have a workout plan and stick to it. I've written a plan which basically boils down to 4/5 Crossfit sessions per week, and 3/4 runs per week, alternating between which one I do more of. There's a plan for the types of runs as well, to keep it interesting. Every workout needs to be followed by stretching to count, even if it's just 30 seconds to get me into the habit. I realised that part of the reason I lost no weight last challenge is that I did a lot less running. And I ran a lot less because I had no plan. So now, I have a plan. Athletics - 10XP Foam rolling three times per week. I need to be better at this, because when I don't do it I'm in pain! This goal is all about planning the time to do it properly. Acrobatics - 5XP Split stretches once per week. Another thing to stop me being in pain! Also, my hips being more flexible can't be a bad thing in general. Spellbook - 5XP Draw three times per week. This is good for me mentally, and I enjoy it. I also enjoy it more when I'm getting better at it, and regular practice definitely helps with that. Prestidigitation - 5XP Teeth brushing 2 x per day, and use the electric brush and interdental sticks in the evening. This went really well last challenge, and I had some good comments from my dentist; I justdon't want to get lazy with it. Original challenge post for posterity: Spoiler Ok, I don't fully have a plan for this challenge yet, but I wanted to get something up and I can tweak it later. I'm looking at the following goals this time round: Track food and hit 150g protein per day. I don't want to cut calories again until I work out if that was why I was feeling light-headed a lot recently, but just tracking gives me some control over my eating without worrying too much about the numbers. The protein goal is to ensure that not all of my calorie are from crap. Have a workout plan and stick to it - I realised that part of the reason I lost no weight last challenge is that I did a lot less running. And I ran a lot less because I had no plan. So now, I will have a plan. Every workout needs to be followed by stretching to count, even if it's just 30 seconds to get me into the habit. Draw 3x per week. Split stretches 1x (maybe 2x) per week. Foam rolling 3x per week. Hangboarding maybe? I need to figure out where to fit this into my day if I'm going to make it a goal again. Teeth brushing 2x per day, and use the electric brush and interdental sticks in the evening. This went really well last challenge, and I don't want to get lazy with it. Think that's about it. I'll codify this into a proper plan at some point between now and the challenge starting on Monday. 6 Quote Level 20 Wood Elf Ranger STR: 15 - CON: 21 - CHA: 8 - SAN: 16 - INT: 17 IAgreeWithTank™ "Shit is going down, but I am not." - iatetheyeti Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel. Jarric
So far so good for zero week. Monday Crossfit was power cleans, and I've got the collarbone bruises to prove it! I worked up to 60kg (~132#) x 3 x 3, which is decent enough. Then we had a 10 minute AMRAP of 4 hang power snatch, 6 chest to bar, and 8 lateral burpees over bar. Snatches were at 30kg (~66#) and that was more than heavy enough after a couple of rounds! Chest to bar felt fairly strong though. Work was ok. Food was standard breakfast (eggs, banana, protein shake), roast beef and mayo sandwich for lunch, and a beef and mushroom pie for dinner (We bought a big lump of beef for our Sunday roast, and it's lasting a while!). Snacked a bit but somehow ended up with fairly low calories, and more than enough protein. In the evening I watched Critical Role, and drew something really silly: Tuesday Crossfit was handwalking and bar muscle ups (I have the bruises on my chest to prove it!). Handwalking was fun, only managed to get about 4 steps (should I call them steps?) at any one time, but it's good to be trying out in the middle of the floor rather than having the safety net of a wall in front of me. I got another bar muscle up, though it was ugly as all hell. I need to get higher in the pull instead of slamming my ribs into the bar I think! After that we did some bodybuilding stuff - 10s of supinated row, dumbbell bench, and weighted situps. Work was good, it's been a bit quiet which has been nice. Food was standard breakfast, leftover beef pie for lunch followed by some fruit bread and jam because the pie was so small, and I cooked a surprisingly good carbonara for dinner. Also had some snacks, partly from miscalculating calories, but nothing too silly and protein was more than enough. In the evening we had Pathfinder, our Rise of the Runelords game. Last session we left off with 6 attractive men saying they were going to punish us for disturbing their master. This session we picked up with trying to fight those guys, discovering they were all illusions, and discovering that there were about 6 clones in the room but they were all invisible. What followed was a comedy of errors as our hobgoblin kineticist decided the best way to level the playing field against invisible opponents was to make everyone blind by filling the room with magical darkness, I decided to create a duplicate of my own and go invisible, I immediately broke cover as our witch was about to kill me by casting a spell on an area she didn't know I was in, I almost actually died* when I got hit by a different effect and the witch had to find my invisible body to heal me. I then realised that I could cast a very low level spell (glitterdust) to make some of these guys visible. I felt very silly at that point. Meanwhile our ranger had cast a spell to sense the vital signs of these guys, and even with a 50% miss chance on every attack was calmly dispatching them one after the other. After this we found out that the actual master was dead, as were the 204 clones of himself that his consciousness had been transferred to over the last couple of thousand years. The kineticist put a gathlain seed into a suspicious looking vial and managed to create an adolescent gathlain: Then we had to explain to her why she had suddenly been born in a random dungeon and that the hobgoblin was not, in fact, her father. We found some cool loot, explored a little, and then discovered 6 succubi (maybe more clones) in a bedroom. They all screamed in anger, and I guess we're killing them next week! *When I say I almost died, I dropped to -11hp. I die at -12hp. In order to survive my next round I would have needed a natural 20 on a constitution check, so there was a 95% chance that I would be dead if my turn had have come round. 3 Quote Level 20 Wood Elf Ranger STR: 15 - CON: 21 - CHA: 8 - SAN: 16 - INT: 17 IAgreeWithTank™ "Shit is going down, but I am not." - iatetheyeti Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel. Rurik Harrgath
Also currently trying to amend my IRL +CON score. Do you fellas figure a real assessment of Constitution based on having major illnesses over the years would lower it, or that having survived those illnesses and lived to tell the tale would make it higher? i.e. the quiz I took which ascertained my attribute points (in my signature) gave me a CON of 11 because I've had cancer, West Nile, pneumonia and a few other things. But someone recently made the point that maybe my IRL CON is much higher because I've endured those and lived to tell the tale. 2 Quote [Level ??] Rurik, the Wayfinder Class: Gloomfall Gunslinger (Artificer/Gunslinger) BRUTALITY 11 | FINESSE 10 | VIGOR 11 | INSIGHT 14 | WILL 13 Equipment: The Alchemist greatcoat armor, Longshot adventuring rifle, Slicer & Dicer dual blades, with adventurer's pack containing an alchemist's kit. DarK_RaideR
As someone who got into D&d when 3rd edition just came out and had to deal with all the ad&d grognards who also had a ton of videogames like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale on their side, it is genuinely weird to now be the one called a grognard. 1 hour ago, Jarric said: in Pathfinder you die when your negative hp equals your constitution score Correct 55 minutes ago, Jarric said: I think in 3.5e you died at -10 regardless of your con score. Correct again. Unless you were a barbarian with the frenzied berzerker prestige class, in which case while raging, you were up and able to fight until -19hp, then once you hit -20 you died. 1 hour ago, Mr_Willes said: That's on the low side for a d6 character at level 14 with a CON score of 12. Choosing the (slightly above) average fixed amount is a relative new rule, 5e or 4e D&d at best. My guess is this Pathfinder group roll their hp with each level up. 56 minutes ago, Jarric said: I have a feeling in very early D&D you died at 0 Most of my ad&d experience was through playing the aforementioned videogames, but I do believe death did happen at 0hp indeed. I was recently invited to try an "oldschool revival" style game using the 1991 Rules Cyclopedia, which is kind of an updated 1e ruleset. Let me tell you a simple example of how that goes, once characters hit level 10, they only get a single hp per level (or 2 for tankier classes like fighter) with no Constitution modifiers applying. Older editions were deadly. Might have mentioned these little buggers before, but behold... the rot grubs! Rot grubs are disgusting little creatures that resemble maggots. They would be considered inconsequential if not for their horrifying attack form. Rot grubs’ color ranges from maggot white to dung brown. They are differentiated from maggots by the two tiny antennae nubs on their heads. Their size ranges from ½ inch to two inches long, with some unusual specimens getting as long as three inches. Most of the time (75%), rot grubs are mistaken for regular worms or maggots. Combat: These small creatures will viciously burrow into any living flesh that touches them, for they greatly enjoy such fare to dine upon. The attack is automatically successful — no attack roll is necessary provided they have been touched by bare skin. If there is any question of whether or not bare skin has been exposed to a rot grub, multiply the would-be victim’s Armor Class by 10, not counting shields. This is the chance, rolled on percentile dice, that the rot grubs are touching bare skin. The victim must immediately apply flame to the wound (1d6 points of damage per application) or have a cure disease spell cast upon him. Flame kills 2d10 grubs per application, while a cure disease kills all of them. Unless these measures are taken, the rot grubs burrow to their host’s heart and kill him in 1-3 turns. The most insidious aspect of the rot grubs is the anesthetic secretions that they use on their victims. Often this dulls the burrowed area, making the victim completely unaware that he has been invaded. Victims should roll Wisdom checks on 1d20 in order to realize that something is gravely wrong. This roll can be made every round, but time is of the essence! Within 1d6 rounds, the rot grubs are deep enough that they cannot be affected by the flames. So let's break this down... they look like maggots, which is something you'll commonly encounter in dungeons or while looting corpses for treasure. You know, the core adventuring stuff. Get close enough and they. Automatically. Succeed on their attack. No initiative rolled, not a single indication, unless you wear armor, which might only save you on a lucky roll. Oh wait, they're encountered in swarms of 5 to 20, meaning at least one of those rolls will connect. Once they do, you need to make a Wisdom check to even realize they're there, because anaesthetic secretions. And even if you do, you need to notice them fast enough, act fast enough and burn yourself alive to hopefully dispose of them. Unless all of the above conditions have been met, congratulations, you now have 1d3 rounds to think "oh crap" before the blissful embrace of permadeath. 3 Quote Lvl 56 Madman Link to comment
DarK_RaideR
I should also note First couple of editions had you in perfectly fine fighting shape till 1hp, then dead at 0hp and only able to rise back up with the aid of resurrective magic. 3.x edition had players helpless at 0hp (only able to take a single action before collapsing at -1hp, which was usually used to down a healing potion and avoid said collapsing) then down at negative hp. Unless an ally stabilized them, they had a 10% chance per chance to get stabilized on their own, otherwise they'd lose -1hp per round. Assuming an enemy wasn't hellbent on chopping you to bits and a fireball wasn't tossed towards your general direction, you had plenty of time and chances to survive. I only played 4e once. I hated it and don't wish to talk about it. I think 5e's death saves strike a decent balance between the two extremes. Assuming a character drops and doesn't receive aid, for starters you don't need to bother with math and negative numbers then you got an entire round before you even roll your first death save. Assuming the worst case scenario (a natural 1 and a fail) you still have nearly 3 full rounds before dying, which is enough time to hopefully get aid or have your allies finish the fight and assist you, while still keeping death a very real, dangerous scenario. 1 Quote Lvl 56 Madman Link to comment

Tanktimus the Encourager
I've played one pen-and-paper session with 2nd ed, and it was ok except for THACO, which can go die in a fire. I played some Baldur's Gate. I did a lot of table-top 3rd edition, which is where my heart still is. 5th edition is fine too. Fortunately I was spared the travesty that is 4th ed. (My conspiracy theory is that they had 5th edition in the bag, but developed 4th edition to intentionally flop so they could sell twice the amount of books). I have half sibling (from Dad's first marriage) who has played first edition. 1 Quote Current Challenge "By the Most-Righteous-and-Blessed Beard of Sir Tanktimus the Encourager!" - Jarl Rurik Harrgath Link to comment
