Slowed down a bit this week. We've had torrential rain and I got called into work yesterday, which messed up training a little. Despite that I went out for my hill run this morning and knocked off hill #4. It was a short and slow run, but I'm pleased that I dragged myself out of bed.

Congrats on hitting that 5 K goal! That's huge!!

I have a suggestion for an intermediate goal...I think part 1 (finish a 10 K) is great. Finish a 10 K under an hour is a pretty solid jump from your 5K time.

I put your 5 K time (29:30, right?) into this pace predictor: https://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training/a761681/rws-race-time-predictor/

and got this result:

Your predicted 10k time is 1:01:30 With a pace of 9:54/mile or 6:09/km

If you wanted to add another level, that would be a good one to put in between your #1 and #2

(but of course it's your challenge, and the way you had it is also great).

That calculator is pretty cool! My time was 29:51 so I've plugged that in and got:

Your predicted 10k time is 1:02:14 With a pace of 10:01/mile or 6:13/km

Awesome, my first side-quest!

This week was the toughest one yet, with brutal weather and work & social commitments. Despite all that, I managed to get through my training and even picked up a completed quest along the way:

Current XP 11,225
Level Level 6
To Next Level: 1,775

Quest complete: 10km in one session (1h 17 minutes)

5k Timed run - complete

Hills run - complete (3 hills down, 2 to go)

Long run - complete - 10k

I've been conflicted this week about the RPG elements, and was feeling like maybe I set the bar a bit low since I've knocked off quite a few big items. I took a look back though and realised that I wouldn't have pushed myself to achieve the results I have if I didn't have a framework to do it with. So on that basis, I think it's working, and dammit I deserve the XP ;) Also, the chart shows that the quest bumps are reasonably spaced out, so it's not so far off.

image.png.751dc4f7d8cfda42c4c4b1845e69f63b.png

On an exciting note, I've been offered a quest!

You have been offered a quest by Xena, Ranger Princess. Complete 10km in under 1:01:30.

Rewards for success: +500XP

Thanks @Xena :) Main quest = derailed ;)

And finally in RPG news, in anticipation of reaching level 10 (eventually), I've decided to add in a new element: Specialisation. When I reach level 10 I'm going to be able to choose a path to specialise in, which will grant bonuses for certain types of training. I wanted to do this for a couple of reasons:

  1. It's making me think about what long-term running goals I want to set myself
  2. Mixing up the motivation/rewards will keep me engaged
  3. It's fun!

Here are the specialisations I've come up with:

Specialisation Bonus
Trail Runner +(1 x n)% (where n = current level) XP on trails
Track & Field +(1 x n)% XP on tracks
Short Distance +(1 x n)% XP for distances under 3km
Middle Distance +(1 x n)% XP for distances between 3km and 10k
Long Distance +(1 x n)% XP for distances greater than 10k
Half Marathoner +(1 x n)% XP weekly bonus if weekly mileage > 21km
Marathoner +(1 x n)% XP weekly bonus if weekly mileage > 42km
Ultramarathoner +(1 x n)% XP weekly bonus if weekly mileage > 45km

I'll get to pick one of the items off the list once I hit Level 10.

Ready for another week!

I think you are good. Also consider in any RPG progressing through the levels is fast in the beginning so you are true to form. At the end of the day if it helps you to get the work in how fast you go through levels doesn't really matter.

Thanks for that, i think you're spot on :) At the end of the day, it's the results that matter, right?

Quick update...

Did a double hill run today and knocked off the last 2 of the 5 hills I had set as goals today. Total Elevation of 103m, which is 20m more than "heartbreak hill", a famous local race feature.

Nabbed a quest bonus for completing the set, so I'm very close to hitting Level 7:

Current XP 12,505
Level Level 6
To Next Level: 495

On a side note I've changed from MapMyRun to Strava for tracking my runs as of this week. The former bugged out on me a couple times and seemed to drain my battery faster. We'll see how things go with the new app.

Next up is another speed 5k :)

It was a bit wet this morning, and there was a massive thunder storm last night. Given that the conditions were far from ideal, I decided on a hill run today instead of my planned 5k. I've met both my 5k and hill goals already this challenge, so I figure mixing things up a bit won't hurt...or will it?

This week I managed to knock off the biggest hill I could find in my area, but you know when you play certain games and you beat a boss, then it mutates to a new form and grows stronger? Well that's pretty much what happened. Right near the biggest hill I've found another hill that goes a little higher and is a little steeper!

I honestly didn't know how steep it would be when I started running up it, but about a quarter of the ay up I realised that this one was a lot steeper than the other. Luckily I've been training on hills a lot this past couple of months, and I was really surprised to find that it wasn't as hard as I expected and I managed to make it to the top! Hill Running +1 :)

New Specialisation Option unlocked: Hill Runner! (+1XP per metre of elevation gained).

I'm really starting to enjoy hills, so I'm going to go and map out the area around my house and see if I can find even more hills. Once that's done, I'm planning on building a 'dungeon' which will consist of the hardest hills I can find and stringing them together. What has happened to me?

Still pushing for level 7, and closing in:

Current XP 12,750
Level Level 6
To Next Level: 250

I'm hoping to round out the week with a new level :)

Have you been doing short hill sprints for training, or just running up gradually tougher hills? That's something I need to get better at.

At the moment I'm doing gradually harder hills - as many as i can manage. This really builds up the endurance. When I'm ready to start dropping my 5k time I'll do short (<50m) sprint repeats on the steepest hill I can find. The last time I used that technique, I managed to drop 5m off my 5k time pretty quickly. I used to hate hills but there really is nothing better for high-value training.

Another week down, and going strong! The weather has started heating up, so I'm trying get out as early as possible.

I'm into 'free' running territory, having met all of my challenge goals. To keep things interesting today I decided to combine a hill run with a 10k, and tried to push the speed as much as I could. I was able to grind out 10k in 1:07, which means I've broken 7 minutes per km pace. I'm chuffed as this means I'm halfway to reaching my long term goal of 10k in 1h.

On a mechanics note, I decided to drop the food bonuses going forward s I'm feeling confident with my diet and I want to focus specifically on running. I've also added some extra 'mini bosses', such as breaking 7 min/km, doing more than 20000 steps in a day, and streaks of 7 days doing 10k steps.

Anyways I've broken through to level seven this week, and am going to keep pushing to complete Xena's side quest this coming week.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement, it's been a real boost!

I pushed myself today and did a timed 5k on my usual route. I've been feeling confident after my challenging weekend run and I found myself digging down a bit deeper this morning. As a result, I've set a new record for myself of 28:30! That's a 1:21 faster than my previous record from 2 weeks ago, where I left nothing in the tank. If anyone ever says that hill training isn't the best training, don't believe them!

Hot, muggy, and full of pollen. Not  my ideal running conditions this morning. i decided to have an easy one today as I'm not 100% and it's just too muggy to do much more than the minimum. I managed a slow 5k today, but nothing stellar to report other than adding the mileage, which should see me complete my 10 hours of running quest this weekend (yay).

Bit of a bleh week this week tbh, but I'm going to just call it 'resilience training'. I still got in all my runs, just nothing stellar form the performance side of things. My 10k this morning was a bit off because my Strava spat the dummy in the first couple of k's, reporting a pace of 14 minutes per km. This sort of threw me so I ended up doing an easy run estimating 8k/h for 120 minutes to get my miles in.

The XP is slowly rising and I knocked off the 10 hours of running quest. The weather is starting to cool off a bit so hopefully this coming week will be a bit nicer.

Weather's still a bit up and down, and work has been hectic this week, but managed to get in a run all the same. It got a bit interrupted by an overseas phone call mid way (ain't technology grand?), but it was a good, steady 7min/km 5k apart from that so I'm happy.

Still making forward progress, but probably not enough to hit another level before the end of the challenge, but I have not problem whatsoever with that :)
