Reluctant Amazon's Return to the Bar

Recommended Posts

So I'm back.

I've been through a lot life wise, but I'm in a generally good place.  I've come to understand I'm non-binary, and I've come out as such pretty publically.

I'm out of shape and my diabetes is out of control.  I' did lose some weight due to changing jobs.

But my sister-in-law dragged me to a gym and rekindled my motivation.

Restarting with a custom novice Linear Progression backed with a bicycling program.

Fitness Goals:

  1. Go to the gym and lift 3 times per week.
  2. Bicycle on 3 off days.
  3. Start fixing my diet, specifically by cutting out sugared beverages and snacking at work

Life Goal:

Be able to play the G and C chords on my guitar cleanly and back and forth.

Hello! I'm Scaly Freak, and I don't care which part of the name you use if you want to shorten it. She/her pronouns. Welcome to the Warriors! :)

"custom novice linear progression" sounds fascinating. Did you start with someone else's program and tweak it, or did you create it entirely from scratch?

“I've always believed that failure is non-existent. What is failure? You go to the end of the season, then you lose the Super Bowl. Is that failing? To most people, maybe. But when you're picking apart why you failed, and now you're learning from that, then is that really failing? I don't think so." - Kobe Bryant, 1978-2020. Rest in peace, great warrior.

I overstated my customization.  It's the Greyskull LP, with added stuff

I enjoyed Greyskull when I did it. I adjusted a few things around the pullup part, since I couldn't do one, and threw in some core exercises as well. Now I'm jealous!

Looks like I found an inexpensive gym that can rescue me from planet fitness.  I had figured out a way to kinda do what I wanted, but this place has 3 power racks with bumpers and room for power cleans and snatches.

we might need pics of the place! My gym is super rigorous about covid cleaning, and it's a YMCA so there's always kids and women and elderly and the occasional enby using the weights. Sometimes it's nice to break up the Cis boy weightroom hegemony.

I never stated my pronouns, I lean feminine in identity, even if my presentation in life is mainly male. I use she/her online, he/she/they elsewhere, mainly on my presentation but I'm flexible.

Already have my custom chucks!

I use my own spotify playlist of weird alternative but upbeat stuff.

The gym is a Retro Fitness. Definitely a more "serious" crowd than the PF I was gonna use out of convenience, but I kinda prefer that.  Some staff members are not as friendly as I'd like.

Here is my Program with starting weights: (AMRAP=As Many Reps As Possible)

Monday/Friday:

  • Warm Up: Rowing Machine, 5 min.
  • Hip Adductor Machine, 3 sets of 12. (60lbs.)
  • Barbell Overhead Press, 2 sets of 5, 1 set AMRAP. (45lbs.)
  • Barbell Row, 2 sets of 5, 1 set AMRAP. (65 lbs.)
  • Barbell Squat, 2 sets of 5, 1 set AMRAP. (65 lbs.)
  • Battle Ropes, 3 sets of 20 sec.
  • Prowler, 5 runs up and down the carpet, 70 lbs.

Wednesday:

  • Warm Up: Rowing Machine, 5 min.
  • Hip Adductor Machine, 3 sets of 12. (60lbs.)
  • Lat Pulldown Machine, 2 sets of 5, 1 set AMRAP. (45lbs.)

Those shoes are badass, even more for not being pristine. Well used and loved shoes are the best :)

What is a retro fitness? Is that a chain or a type of gym? I'm picturing leather medicine balls and fixed weight barbells that have balls on the ends instead of plates.

Good point.

Optional parts of the Warrior Uniform include chalk, belt, sweatpants and pony tail, but the chucks are more or less a must. Or some other kind of shoes with hard and flat soles.

I've actually been lifting in these for a minute now, and it's not the worst for non-cardio. Kinda like deadlift slippers.

Well, to be completely honest, since my most recent lifting was happening in my own home, I'm more of a barefoot lifter these days...

Do you know what triggered the attack?

There is no rule that says you have to go straight back to squats right now. Ease back into it when you are ready.
