So, last challenge was a bust. I was dealing with some rough times and was doing all I could just to cope. Well, I did some self care and am feeling much better able to handle my day to day life.

giphy.gif

I took the whole week off work last week (Nov 21-29) and it was awesome! It was just what I needed. My therapist suggested I take the week off and then just get away for a little while. I decided to go visit my sister and brother in law in Tulsa for a few days. I spent the weekend with them and just lounged around watching tv and visiting. My sister made homemade lasagna and it was delicious! We watched a bunch of Hallmark Christmas movies and got through the first season of His Dark Materials (Highly recommend! Good series!). It was very relaxing.

Then, to take the relaxation a bit further, I rented a small cabin that sat right on the river of a local state park. It was a tiny house cabin, perfect for just one person. I spent two nights there and just enjoyed the outdoors. I would sit by the river and watch the fish jump and the birds fly. The cabin had a cute little swing chair that I was able to sit in and read while looking out over the river. I worked on a puzzle for a little while outside until it got too windy and I went inside. I ate sandwiches and made a little first in the firepit. It was so relaxing and I took that time to reflect on my life. I thought about what I want out of life. I thought about my mother and her passing away the previous year. I thought about all my stress about the pandemic and other things in my life. I just reflected on the last year, thinking about the positives and negatives. I think it was really good for me. (Pictures of the cabin and outdoors coming in the post below).

I drove back home (wishing I could have stayed at the cabin longer) and got thai food for me and my husband. I ended up spending quite a bit of time relaxing on the couch, crocheting, and listening to an audio book. The rest of the week was full of video games, youtube, crocheting, and just relaxing. I spent some time with my husband too when he and I were awake at the same time (He isn't working so his sleep schedule is crazy off balance). One night we cuddled together and watched James Bond Quantum of Solace. It was pretty good.

For Thanksgiving we went over to my in-laws to eat lunch and spend time together. We tried to keep fairly spread out though. Black Friday I went to see my other sister and her family (she lives closer) and had leftover thanksgiving food while watching Santa Claus is Coming to Town with my brother. (My brother is severely autistic and disabled. However, he is so adorable and fun to hang around!)

So I had a great vacation and was able to recuperate from a lot of the stress I was under and feel like I can take on a new challenge.

Challenge Time!

So, I've been trying to get back to eating healthy breakfasts for quite a while. I keep failing at doing that. So, I'm thinking about taking a step back and trying something simpler that I think I can manage right now, especially with the holidays and the stress that comes with it. Instead, I'm going to focusing on increasing my water intake and decreasing my soda intake. I've been drinking a LOT of soda and I know it's damaging. So, here is my goal:

Drink at least 32oz water/day

I think this is doable and a good place to start. Recently I haven't even been drinking more than 16 oz of water per day, so this is an increase. My ultimate goal is to get to drinking 64 oz water each day and no soda, but baby steps. I'm not going to restrict soda just yet. I'm going to start with drinking 32 oz water each day and see what that does for my soda intake. I think if I get better hydration, I will naturally drink less soda. I will count how many sodas I have each day with the understanding that I'm not restricting that. I'm just wanting to see what drinking more water does to my soda intake. I know I"m drinking a lot of soda (Please no judgement when I post how many I drink) but I'm trying to fix it. I think it's a good place to start.

So, this is the tiny house cabin I stayed in. They built a deck around the tree there and you can see a little swing chair that hangs from the tree limbs. It was very nice to sit in that chair, read, and just take in nature. It was lovely. The tiny house was super cute too!

These next two pictures are a view of the river going both to the left and to the right. There were all kinds of fish jumping! I wish I had brought a fishing pole!

This was my view from the deck of the tiny house! They had a little bird feeder too and sometimes in the mornings while I was eating breakfast, I'd look out the window and see birds at the feeder and then sometimes the squirrels would come play up on the deck!

Finally, in the evening I built myself a little fire in the fire pit. I wish I had bought marshmellows or hot dogs at the grocery store before I went out! Oh well. It was still really nice to just sit and relax, looking into the fire, reflecting on the past year. I was also super proud of myself that I built the fire myself with no lighter fluid or help! It was the first time I had built a full fire by myself! There were plenty of dry leaves on the ground to use for tinder and the Airbnb host provided firewood!

Oh my goodness, your vacation sounds so lovely and just what you needed! I'm so glad that it was restorative for you.

Great idea to tackle the soda habit! Zero judgement to be found here, but I bet just being aware and tracking it will help pretty quickly.

Only bad thing about my vacation stay at the cabin is that I wasn't there long enough! lol. It was so nice to relax and recharge. I'm ready to face the next couple of months I think. It's going to be rough as this is the anniversary of my mom's passing. So far I'm getting through it though.

Week 0 Update: 12/1/2020

Yesterday was a good day overall. It was my first day back at work. I did find that some of my stress is still here and getting back into the grind is bringing some of that back. However, I feel a little better able to handle it. I'm finding myself with not enough to do at work. I'm having to make up work and find ways to keep myself distracted/entertained so that the day doesn't drag on. I've played so much solitaire and that's not good. I keep asking my boss and my employees if they need help with anything but everything seems to be covered. So I'm going to go through our filing system and see if there's anything we can improve. That's something I guess. I could also update some of the job descriptions we have.

giphy.gif

Last night was a pretty good evening. I got home and had a therapy appointment via phone call. I told her that her suggestion about me taking some time off and getting away from it all worked, and she was so happy for me. We talked about a lot of things including my mom. I had a very troubled relationship with my mother and I've tried to work through that after her passing. She asked me to come up with something positive that I got from my mom. Something that my mom taught me or left me with. I thought about how she always stood her ground when faced with a threat rather than run away from it. I tried to model her growing up and managed to gain some self confidence by standing my ground even when I was scared. I had the potential to be that girl that everyone picked on and pushed around in school, but I managed to make it too hard for the bullies to bully me and I was able to protect my friends. That's something that my mom taught me. We also talked about good memories I had of my mom instead of just revisiting all the bad memories. I think it was a good exercise and I plan to do more of that during this month. Remember that it wasn't all bad.

Anyways, after my therapy appointment I got dinner and played some Dead By Daylight. I'm really getting into this game. It's HARD, but I'm definitely getting better at it. I won two matches as the killer with no one escaping, then I lost two matches with everyone escaping. Man, there was one group that really took me for a ride, and then after the match I found out they were pretty high ranked compared to me. No wonder they kicked my butt. I just need more practice and to learn more tricks of how to play.

Challenge Update:

So, yesterday I didn't try to hard on my challenge. I wanted a baseline to work from. So, here goes.

Drink 32 oz water/day - 0/7 Pending...

Water: I had about 16 oz water during the day at work and 8 oz at home while playing a video game, which comes to 24 oz water for the day.

Soda: 12 oz in the morning with breakfast, 1 16oz soda with lunch and 1 refill, 1 12 oz soda in the afternoon, 1 32 oz soda with dinner, which comes to 88 oz soda for the day.

YIKES!!!! Now I have my baseline. Today I'm committing to drinking 32 oz of water and see if that helps me drink less soda. Hopefully the more water I drink, the less soda I will drink. Either way, more water is good.

Week 0 Update: 12/2/2020

Yesterday was a pretty good day. Still didn't have too much to do at work, but I chilled with an audio book while going through some files on the computer. It wasn't too bad and made the day go by faster. I actually finished the book I was listening to.

I'm an officer in a book club. I joined the book club when I was still getting my online Master's degree and it was my university's online book club. I am still a member as an alumni and have been an officer for several years now. This month we're reading We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. I got a head start on the audio book and finished it yesterday. It was a rather dark story for a December read, but that is what the members voted on for the book of the month! Now that I've finished, I'm going to go back and re-listen to the Scythe series by Neal Shusterman. I read the first two books, but haven't read the third one (or listened to, rather). Now that the third book is out, I can't remember what all happened in the first two, so I'm going to listen to them again. They were really good! Any other book worms out there? What are you reading?

giphy-downsized-large.gif

After work I went to Walgreens to pick up my medication. While I was there I bought some Christmas cards and a tiny Christmas tree that you can decorate yourself. We don't have enough room for our big tree since we haven't gotten rid of the rat stuff (cage, toys, hides, etc) so I decided to get a tiny tree that I put on our coffee table. It's a little lopsided, but it's cute. I'm not really feeling the Christmas spirit this year due to covid and limited gatherings, but I'm trying. Maybe just a little bit of happiness for the season will do some good.

After eating dinner and putting up the tiny tree I mostly just hung out and watched youtube videos the rest of the night. Not a bad evening.

Challenge Update:

Drink 32 oz water/day - 1/7 Success!!!!

Water: I had 32 oz of water while at work. I have a cup on my desk that I use for water that holds 32 oz. I just made sure to drink that through the day. The total comes to  32 oz water for the day.

Soda: One 12 oz in the morning with breakfast, one 32oz soda with lunch, and one 32 oz soda with dinner, which comes to 76 oz soda for the day.

Not a BIG improvement, but there's improvement and I met my goal! I plan on upping my water intake each week until I'm at 64 oz water a day.  Definitely already drinking more water that I had been.

I'm currently reading "a Deadly Education" by Naomi Novik. I loved her book "Uprooted" - this one has a very different style and tone, but I'm still enjoying it immensely.

Recently finished "the left-handed booksellers of London" by Garth Nix. SO good. I also loved his Abhorsen series.

(I read a lot of YA fantasy, what can I say).

15% reduction in soda consumption in one day is great! You're doing awesome. That's like 37g less sugar!

Week 0 Update: 12/3/2020

So, since my pet rat died, I've been looking into getting a puppy. I finally found a breeder that has puppies available and I got really excited. However, when I told my husband, he said he didn't think he was ready for a puppy just now and doesn't want to get one in the middle of covid when it's so hard to take a pet to the vet. So I was really disappointed because I was so looking forward to getting a new puppy. It's not a "no" just "not right now" so I'm hopeful that this spring or summer we can get one. However, right now it's going to stay just me and my husband.

One of the big reasons I want a puppy is because I know my husband loves animals and it would give him something to focus on. He would be less lonely. Right now he is really depressed and lonely and it just really hurts my heart. I want to do more for him, but there's really nothing I can do to help. I've asked him how I can help and he really doesn't know and he doesn't expect me to have the answer. It does drag me down though. I hate seeing him go through this. *sighs*

So, suddenly I haven't been feeling like playing video games. Last night I watched a movie on Netflix and then a couple of youtube videos before bed. Didn't really do much else. I need to clean the house, but I have trouble getting the motivation to do much of anything still. I'm better after my vacation, but I'm not all better. Maybe if I can just do one thing every day to work towards cleaning the house I'll feel better about it. I'm not sure.

I feel like I'm rambling now. I hope everyone has a great day!

Are you looking at any specific breeds?

I understand your husband's reluctance to getting one right now though. When he was working did he work from home? If not, it might help to mention that now, while he's home, is a good time to bring in a puppy so he's there to work through the puppy training stages.

And I have to plug the "adopt don't shop" (I say this having gotten Floof from a breeder since my non-dog-loving husband decided he liked the breed so no judgement). Maybe keep an eye on the local rescues and Petfinder to see if a "too good to pass up" floof shows up

I've suggested going to a rescue and finding a puppy, but my husband is very insistent that he wants another Keeshond. A Keeshond is a rare breed and while I'm keeping an eye out at rescues, really the only place I can find one is at a breeder. So that's why we're going that route.

I did mention that while he's not working he could help the puppy through the puppy training stages, and he did admit that was true and not a bad idea, but he still said he didn't quite want a puppy right away. I'm not going to force a puppy on him. So, I'm going to pass on the puppies currently available. I have another breeder expecting puppies this spring/summer and another breeder expecting puppies next fall. So, we have options.

I'm still disappointed in not getting one of the puppies that are available now, just because I miss having a pet around. I get over my pets' passing more quickly than my husband does.

I totally get the cleaning struggle. For me it helps to prioritize the high-effect areas. Spaces I can see from my lounging area or the kitchen counter have the biggest effect on my mental health, so I do those first. Sometimes it brings me enough calm to do more.. But if not, it's okay too, because at least the coffee table is clear, or whatever it is.

Just like the soda - baby steps!

Week 0 Update: 12/4/2020

Yesterday overall was a good day. Still bored as hell at work, but I'm getting through the day. I'm playing a lot of solitaire. I've told my boss that I don't have enough to do. I've told him several times, but to no avail. Next week I will be starting to learn a new process and writing instructions on how to perform the process, so that will take up some of my time.

After work I went home and decided to play some Dead By Daylight. I think their latest update messed up the ranking system somehow. So, for those of you that don't know, in DBD you are ranked based on how well you play the game. The better you are at the game, the higher the rank you can get. The computer then matches you up for games based on your ranks. Well, I'm a rank 15 because I'm new and not very good at the game yet. I kept getting matched with level 3s, 5s, 7s, 8s, etc. So basically I kept getting my ass handed to me while playing. It was insane. I got tired of getting my ass kicked over and over again, so I decided to go listen to an audio book and crochet for a while. I'll probably play again another time. It was very frustrating though.

Challenge Update:

Drink 32 oz water/day - 2/7 Success!

Water: I drank my full 32 oz cup of water, then when I got home, I had an additional 16 oz glass of water! The total comes to  48 oz water for the day.

Soda: One 12 oz in the morning with breakfast, one 32oz soda with lunch, and one 32 oz soda with dinner, which comes to 76 oz soda for the day.

I made it on my water goal, but didn't drink any less soda. That's ok for now. We'll see how it continues.

I've suggested going to a rescue and finding a puppy, but my husband is very insistent that he wants another Keeshond. A Keeshond is a rare breed and while I'm keeping an eye out at rescues, really the only place I can find one is at a breeder. So that's why we're going that route.

Ah, Keeshond's are beautiful dogs. Like I said, we got our Malamute from a breeder because of Hub's preferences so I understand.

Maybe if I can just do one thing every day to work towards cleaning the house I'll feel better about it. I'm not sure.

What's worked for me is picking one area that is my "safe zone" (chaos makes me anxious, clean room is "safe"). For me this was the bedroom. Everytime I cleaned, I started in that room. It stayed consistently cleaner, took less time each time I cleaned it, and it would sometimes give me a boost of successfully doing one thing, now I realize I do have the energy to do the next

I want that to be my computer room, but it's going to take some major decluttering to get it to where it needs to be. I really need to work on that. Right now it feels more like a storage room than a safe zone.

Week 1 Update: 12/8/2020

Ok, so I didn't have time yesterday to post an update but I will today. My weekend was pretty good. On Friday I took a risk and went to a small Christmas party. My friend made dinner and we all exchanged gifts. It was a good time. I actually got a playable Ocarina from Zelda Ocarina of Time, so I was thrilled!

Saturday and Sunday I spent most of my time playing video games with friends. I played a lot of Dead By Daylight, some Phasmophobia, and then have been having a great time playing Raft with my friends! We played last night too and are planning on playing again tonight. I'm glad they're seeing how fun this game can be. I played it religiously for a while and finally beat the game (as far as what has come out anyway). It has been a blast!

Not much else of note has happened. Because of the high Covid numbers in Oklahoma, I am trying to avoid going out or doing much. It's hard for me as I'm a pretty social person. The online gaming helps, but I still miss going to dinner with friends and having our game nights.

Challenge Update:

Week  0 Update:

12/4/2020

Drink 32 oz water/day - 3/7 Success!

Water: I can't remember the details of what I drank on Friday, but I know I drank at least 32 oz of water at work. The total comes to  32 oz water for the day.

Soda: I don't remember how much soda I had on that day, which comes to ?? oz soda for the day.

12/5/2020

Drink 32 oz water/day - 4/7 Success!

Water: I remember drinking three 16 oz glasses of water on Saturday. The total comes to  48 oz water for the day.

Soda: I believe I had 12 oz soda with breakfast/lunch (I woke up late so just had breakfast for lunch), then I got fast food chicken with a 32oz soda. I then had another 12 oz soda after dinner while gaming , which comes to 56 oz soda for the day.

12/6/2020

Drink 32 oz water/day - 5/7 Success!

Water: I remember drinking three 16 oz glasses of water on Sunday as well. The total comes to  48 oz water for the day.

Soda: I had 12 oz soda with breakfast, 12 oz soda with lunch, and a 12 oz soda with dinner , which comes to 36 oz soda for the day.

Final Tally for Week 0:

Drink 32 oz water/day - 5/7

So, I'm feeling pretty good about how well I'm doing this challenge. I had two days that I didn't try THAT hard to get water in, but I'm doing much better. I think I feel comfortable enough with my Week 0 score that I'm going to bump up Week 1 to drinking 48 oz of water a day. I'm finding that when I have cans of soda at home, I drink less soda overall. I'll get food and just drink a can of soda instead of going through a drive through and getting a 32 oz soda. I think I'm going to focus on just drinking the smaller cans of soda instead of getting a drink through a drive through and see how that goes regarding my soda to water ratio.

Week 1 Challenge Update:

12/7/2020

Drink 48 oz water/day - 1/7 Success!

Water: I drank my full 32oz cup of water at work. I still had a little bit left at the end of my shift. I chugged the rest of it down before leaving for the day. I then had a 16 oz cup of water when I got home while gaming. The total comes to  48 oz water for the day.

Soda: I had one 12 oz soda with breakfast, two 16 oz sodas with lunch (got a refill), and one 12 oz soda with dinner, which comes to 56 oz soda for the day.

I am so impressed with your water drinking goal and its effect on your soda consumption! That is awesome.

I feel like you are putting your effort into a real high reward area, and I'm so proud of you!

Thank you! I decided to change my goal up to something I felt I could actually manage. Before I was trying to eat healthy breakfasts, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get it down. I thought that maybe I wasn't ready for that and looked for somewhere that I felt I could be successful. It's a small thing, but small things add up. I'm hoping I'll start feeling better as I get rid of the soda craving and start drinking more water. I'll tackle food after that.

Week 1 Update: 12/9/2020

Yesterday was a pretty good day overall. I finished an audio book and started a new one (in the same series). When I got home from work I was feeling a little tired and didn't feel like playing video games or watching TV. So instead I laid down on the couch and listened to my audio book. I fell asleep on the couch and slept most of the evening. My husband woke me up about 9:30pm and I got up, got ready for bed, went back to sleep. Apparently I was really tired. Not sure why. I haven't really been doing anything drinking, stressful, or strenuous. Hrm...

I had fried chicken gizzards  for lunch yesterday and my stomach really didn't appreciate it. I think it would have been fine if I hadn't ordered extra gizzards. It was really tasty, but my stomach was just not happy all afternoon and evening. I had planned on going home and making a ham sandwich for dinner (something light so my stomach wouldn't rebel anymore) but when I got home I found that my bread was moldy, so I had to throw it out. Instead I had one slice of leftover pizza and didn't eat anything else all evening. I ended up sleeping instead.

Anyways, that's really all of note that happened yesterday. Work was normal. I chatted with people on facebook messenger a little. Just an ordinary day with a rather dull ending.

Challenge Update:

12/8/2020

Drink 48 oz water/day - 2/7 Success!

Water: I drank my full 32 oz cup of water about halfway into the work day. I filled up my cup again and drank about half of it.  The total comes to  48 oz water for the day.

Soda: I had a 12 oz with breakfast, a 32 oz with lunch (which was filled with a lot of ice), and a 12 oz with dinner which comes to 56 oz soda for the day.

Doing good so far this week! Let's keep up the momentum!
