HELLO ALL-GUILD DARLINGS! Merry Liftmas!

8gmkqOH.jpg

Your friendly neighborhood flipperdoo here with fewer flips unfortunately, but activity a-plenty. I'm planning on running my first half marathon on December 12 or 13 (depending on which day looks to have better weather)! That's it. That's the goal.

Hahah. Just kidding, just kidding. There will be other goals. WHAT ARE THEY? TBD.

I can't tell what that guy in that picture is thinking with that side-eye glance.

"Wow, her beard and lifts are better than mine."

"Why the hell am I turned on by this?"

"That belt should be black with a big silver buckle, if she wanted the cosplay to be truly accurate."

The real question is: after going full Santa at the beginning of December, how are you gonna top that?

My vote is for an Advent calendar of fully-costumed lifting pics.

I'm running a bit behind on Advent Calendar things, but maybe a 12 days of Liftmas... 😁

It's Zero Week, but I am jogging and making progress toward my ONE GOAL. I ran 5 miles on Monday and 7 yesterday (around 8:55/mile which is pretty good even though the run itself was miserable). I also lifted on Tuesday (5 x 3 x 160# benches and some horrible squatting triples at 2 x 260, 2 x 255, and 2 x 235.)

Squatting is so hard when one is running this much... Or at least I'm having trouble with it. Bench is obviously still going strong. Deadlifts seem unimpacted by running and more impacted by late night extracurriculars than anything else... The perils of sumo. 😝

I'm reading a bunch of fantasy right now (in the middle of Harrow the Ninth) to lighten up my dark evenings. We have a few more weeks before the days start getting longer again. We can do thissss.

Tonight I'm lifting and hanging out with my Quarantine Pal (QP). Tomorrow, lifting again and maybe a virtual movie night. Sunday is a 10 mile run!

Kettlebell swings seem to positively impact said extracurriculars.

HAPPY HOLIDAY WEEK ONE, YOU GUYS. GRÜSS VOM KRAMPUS!

Weekend Update
Friday
morning, I went on a donut run for very bougie donuts with GC (gym crush) about an hour out of the city. We made good time, both worked from the car (thanks zoom calls), and got a DELIGHTFUL SPREAD.

r6LHQqu.jpeg

I got the big task I was working on done right before  5 PM, which felt great on a Friday night. ✌️ And then hit the gym for some lifting!

Deadlift: 3 x 305#, 2 x 315#, 3 x 1 x 325# (these were supposed to be doubles but I was NOT feeling it), 2 x 315#

Bench: 3 x 5 x 155#, 2 x 10 x 135#

Curls: 4 x 6 x 20#

Glute ham raises: 4 x 10 (woof)

Ab wheel: 4 x 8

Lat raises: 4 x 10 x 15#

QP picked me up from the gym, fed me homemade chicken parm, and we had a chill night in.

Saturday morning was super relaxed. QP made me breakfast and dropped me off at the gym... literally picked me up and dropped me off at the gym. THERE IS NO HOME. THERE IS ONLY GYM. GYM IS YOUR HOME NOW. 😂

Bench: 4 x 3 x 160#, 2 x 5 x 145#

Squats: 3 x 3 x 265# <-- struggling but not nearly as bad as Tuesday, 2 x 5 x 235#

Deficit deadlifts: 5 x 255#, 3 x 265#, 2 x 1 x 275#, 5 x 255#

Dips: 4 x 10

DB rows: 5 x 12 x 45#

I threw in some handstand practice at the end as well. Not a bunch, but some. I had a couple of nice straight body holds. We had a very big storm roll in, super blustery with ice and snow, so any other plans for outdoor activities were cancelled. That night, I was ENTRALLED by Harrow the Ninth and read a ton of it. I got a text late-ish and went over to play board games with BB (bike boi -- he lives literally across the street from me) and his roommates and stayed up too late drinking. Whoops.

Sunday morning, I finished up Harrow the Ninth, took a nap, did some errands, and finally suited up to go for my run around 3:30 PM.  I ran a measly 1 mile before I rolled my ankle while adjusting a glove. 🙈 GUH. I was incredibly annoyed. It only smarted a bit, but I didn't want to keep running on it because I'm super prone to keep throwing them if I do it once. It IS, of course, the same one I rolled two weeks ago that has been on the mend. I cancelled the run and went for a 2 hour walk instead, just to stay moving.

I wanted to get one more long run under my belt to feel more confident about the half marathon... if I do want to take another week to train up, then I would push the half to the following weekend... But on the other hand, I feel perfectly confident I could do the half this upcoming weekend. One more long run is not going to make the difference between whether I can or cannot hit the distance at a reasonable pace.  I'm leaning towards just going for it this weekend. I'll do a medium run early in the week and see how the ankle feels before making a final call!

My understanding is that once those tendons stretch, they stay stretched, and your ankles are always prone to it. I had a period where I kept rolling an ankle every time it was 99% on the mend. It was horrible.

Best things I've found were hiking as rehab, using the uneven ground and a controlled pace to tune up all the supporting muscles at a variety of angles and pressures, and barefoot style shoes. The thicker the sole on my shoe, the more likely my ankle is to turn. I need the feedback of the ground to keep it stable. (I saw someone talking about this somewhere, and found it was true for me.)

Good recs! Yeaaah, my ankles are long standing problem points. I have a full Google albums of sprained pics from the last few years. 😅The vast majority of them were at gymnastics practice and FAR worse than what I've managed to do to myself outside of the gymnastics gym. Weirdly, landing with MORE force equals more trauma. Who woulda thought? Hahah.

I do try to hike sometimes and everything is in minimalist shoes! I ran into a ton of issues with higher stack height shoes earlier this year -- I tripped all over the dang place. As soon as I get distracted or am not paying 100% attention to what I'm doing, I'm liable to just fail to get my foot in the right position to land. I have some good proprioception and ankle strengthening PT exercises to do, but it still happens all the same.

I totally know that thing. It doesn't happen barefoot, and not much in barefoot shoes, but sometimes my foot just lands on its side randomly, and, like, WTF even is that.

I hear you. After a bad ankle sprain from parkour in the rain a couple years ago, I had to not only work exercises but also on my running/landing gait, which tends toward over-supination. I was about to ask if you were doing any PT, since I've found it helpful myself (though I've never found one who was good enough to actually pinpoint the injury point for my ankle).
