Was doing a covid and mental health check as part of a survey. Ticked way too many “yeses”. Cried. Eating lunch and having some water. Will see how I feel after that, but may call in sick for the rest of the day and go back to bed. Bleh. If you haven’t done a mental health check recently, worth doing- this both surprised me and not.

Had a hot hot bath with a candle and moved away from the computer so I wasn’t running the live news anymore. Feeling a little better. Will probably get delivery tonight though, depends on how Mr feels when he gets out of the bath. I want pizza. I am in bed and not getting out again until tomorrow, so it will depend on if he has the willpower to make dinner.

I did my workout this morning. Thankfully got it in before the doom spiral. I will stay away from the wine and keep dry January running. There was no hard liquor in the house which is a good thing, because otherwise I know I would have drank it.

Didn’t order pizza. I ended up microwaving a slice of cornbread, put a quarter avocado on it, ate a carrot and took a bite from a block of cheese.

Nice work on pushing through when you weren't feeling it and not caving to the takeaway temptations. Hopefully the rest makes you feel better tomorrow.

I’m glad I got the rest in preparation for my doozy of a day yesterday. Slept deeply last night (maybe due to bath, maybe due to no midday nap). Yesterday came verrrrrry close to getting delivery, but narrowly avoided it.

No support from the survey, but it was the shake I needed to add “find therapist” to my life admin list. I also realised that I had missed my anxiety meds the night before, which (combined with the whole first day back to work and America news) may  have contributed to my spiral. Mr is home from work today, I’m taking a rest day from exercise, and I am mentally feeling a bit better- and will try and stay away from the news (or at most do an hourly check in, rather than letting the stream run live the whole day).

Friday

Budget: went over a bit on groceries, but seeing as that was because Mr wasn’t feeling well and we bought a bunch of easy to digest stuff for his tummy and skipped date night it should even out alright.

Workout: rest day today and met this weeks goal even without in person classes.

No delivery food: so far so good. So good, in fact, that I had to scroll back to check what my third goal was.

Mental state: eh. I got a little glimmer of mojo at work for about half an hour while I was working on a suggestion email for an improvement that we might actually be able to enact and that would really reduce a pain point for one team. Otherwise, work was nothingy and I was just a grumpy ass at home. Mr isn’t well, and I snapped at him and I feel bad. I said sorry but still shitty of me. I am trying to shake it off.

MaisieMayhem was adorable though, and I got a photo, so sharing here for those not on the discord.

amazing about the no delivery food though :)

Mine is mental.
His is... gaseous... went to the Dr today and she said just indigestion though, so glad it’s not appendicitis which is what we were worried about with the prolonged tummy ache. She did tell him to lose weight completely unprompted, so that was a bit rude- especially since he has lost about 10kg since starting the new job.

I feel like a butt for always coming on your challenge and being insufferably chirpy when you’re feeling shitty. I’m sorry. This sucks.

I had my appendix out when about 11, oh man it was horrendous the pain!

so I’m glad he doesn’t have that!!!!

wow that’s not nice of the doctor at all...jeeeez doctors seem to be obsessed with weight, everywhere!

oh my, Yasha... please do not ever apologise to me for that. I love getting a notification that you’ve written to me, and i never ever think you’re overly chirpy or anything. You help me a lot. To rationalise things, to keep calm and to work through it.

lots of love to you always xx

I had mine out the week of my eighteenth birthday, the worrrrrrst. I think there’s a photo of me somewhere two days later at my cousin-twin’s 18th, sitting on the couch looking like death warmed up.

It was super rude, especially since he went in with a bellyache that meant he hasn’t eaten right in a week. She is right, he does need to lose weight, but that wasn’t the place for it.

ok thanks Sal, love to you too ❤️

Ouch! There must be something in the appendix and birthdays. I had mine out a couple days before my cousin's birthday. I was so determined to get out of hospital that my Dad sprung me the day of the party. The nurses said I had to get dressed by myself, etc to prove I was okay. It took forever, but I did it and they let me go. I spent the whole time in one chair, got home and the exertion of moving from the car to my flat was enough to make me puke. My cousin's cake had had green icing on it.... let's just say it looked like I'd splatted an alien.

Doctor sounds like a bitch who needs to be pulled up. Yes, a healthy weight is important for many reasons but if she couldn't be bothered to see that there is already a downward trend,  and that he came to her IN PAIN, not to be bullied about said weight, then she's just a judgmental piece of work.

The recovery as I recall took a long time before I could lift anything heavy- I remember because I wasn’t able to haul the tray out of the dishwasher at work to unload it for yoinks. Abs! Even when you can’t see them they’re working hard XD

Yes, we think possibly it was a slight cross-culture communication issue, where the delicacy of first asking whether he knew what his current weight was- did he want to check on their scale, is he happy with it/working on it etc etc etc and then leading in to an offer to refer to a nutritionist etc (would have lined up with the digestive distress, kill 2 birds- check for allergies and offer a healthy meal plan) was just not quite there. I think this might be the case as one of our friends who also has English as a second language and comes from a similar culture of just blurting things out listened to Mr’s story of the doctor making assumptions and offering the unrequested advice... then turned around and offered unrequested weightloss advice! Ah, people. Even when they mean well it could really be done better or not at all.

Saturday

Budget: I haven’t math’ed, but we did shout the DnD crew pizza since we usually make them dinner and neither of us felt up to it today. Probably gone a bit over. Did call and cancel an unexcerry $20/month charge on our phone bill (data plan for a tablet we never use outside the house wifi), and switched electricity providers, so we shall see how we come out.

Workout: no change.

Delivery: got pizza for DnD crew. Technical fail, but I don’t feel bad about it, it wasn’t in the same attitude of the bad habit I’m trying to crack down on this challenge, but more a reasonable decision to not go out to the groceries again and get stuff to make dinner for the crew.

Dry Jan: still on track. There was an open bottle of wine at DnD but I didn’t have any.

Mental health: eh. I slept reaaaaally badly last night (wide awake until 3am, fitful tossing until 5am, then I think I slept a bit between 5-10am when the cats screamed enough that I got up and started my day). Woke up a bit grouchy, but got everything done that needed doing before the DnD crew arrived, went back to bed to try for a nap but didn’t sleep. Best Lady brought me a puzzle, so I am working on that to distract the brain gremlins. I am back on track with taking my meds (only missed the one day).

Sunday:

a much better mental health day today. Stil a little wobbly, but not too bad. Did a lot of the puzzle Best Lady gave me + a bit of gardening (ripped up all the spent sunflowers and tomatoes). Washed some dishes, watched some YouTube, that sort of thing.

Budget: hmmm, it’s a new challenge week, but my budget resets on a fourtnightly Thursday, so I’ll say “no change” from yesterday- still haven’t run the numbers since the pizza, also didn’t spend any $ today. Will likely have to grocery shop tomorrow to grab a couple things for Mr’s work lunches- we’ll see.

Workout: yep. Was a toughie but a goodie. Both the boxing gym and the personal trainer open again this week, so I am excited to mix things up a bit between in person and virtual workouts.

Delivery: no delivery food. I had chilli for dinner, Mr had veggie soup (his tummy is still not fully better so he is going gently).

Other weird life updates: it’s early enough in the year that I was pretty sure I could recall all the freggies we bought so far, and I have started a notes document on my phone with a running total, so at the end of the year we can see what freggies (and how much) we ate over the year. This is a bit of a long-term plan, so when we get our own place we know what to prioritised planting (eg if at the end of they year we’ve eaten 20kg of apples and 1kg oranges and we have to choose what tree goes in our orchard first- it’s got to be the apple). I’m great at starting things, not awesome at continuing them, so we shall see if this idea makes it to the end of the year XD

Oh, and Maisie fell in the fishtank. She’s fine and the fish are fine. It was pretty hilarious. Otherwise a relatively uneventful day.

I feel this could bear more narration about the manner in which events unfolded.

Very well. Settle in younglings.

Long, long ago, in the Before Times when I was a young woman- people used to attend their workplace in person. Even when the work could just as effectively be done from their home or outside they were crammed in all together in a place called “the office”. Because of the layout of the office, and fitting so many people in together, some would work the whole day without seeing the sky, the trees, anything alive at all besides the other workers (who often seemed to be barely alive themselves, and rather unnatural). I was one of these people. Under Fluro lights, facing a cupboard and flanked by a wall there was not a spec of natural life to rest my eyes and heart on between emails.

So. I took it upon myself to bring life to my space. I set up a tank of water, and brought forth two fishy friends: Fred, and George. Their gentle swishy activity was good for my soul, and for the others who worked around me who would come to visit Fred and George when they needed a brain break.
All was well for years, and then: 2020.

In the hurried evacuation, the migration to work-from-home, Fred and George were almost forgotten and left behind- but I retrieved them (tank and all) when collecting my office chair.
For nearly a year they had been in protective custody, shielded from Mischief and Mayhem by the inverted function of a cat carrier. Then, the fluffy ones needed to visit the vet- the carrier was required for its original purpose! Now, their flimsy Perspex lid was all that separated them from KittyBum, as Mayhem in particular liked to sit atop their tank and peer down on them, like a Japanese Koi fish painting- watching their antics from above.

Alas, one day the inevitable happened: the Perspex flexed under MaisieMayhem’s weight, and dunked her whole rear end into the tank- giving Fred and George (and herself!) quite a shock. Thankfully, it was a minor issue- as the flex worked both ways and sprung back into position once the weight of the fleeing yowling Maisie was removed.

To this day Fred and George are wary of KittyBum every time that dumbass sits back on top of their tank. At least now there is some protection in the form of a toolbox. One day, perhaps, they will return to the office- and once again live a cat-free life. But for now, the toolbox will have to do.
