Enjoying the yoga is never the problem.  Doing the yoga is the trickier part, and it shouldn't be, because I harbor a lightly-hidden secret passion for getting my certification to help normalize yoga as a health and wellness practice for men of all ages and ability.  I truly feel yoga could be a body positive revolution for many fellas living in pain or with poor mobility/flexibility who cannot get past their toxic masculinity notion that yoga is *insert your toxic adjective*

It's a pipe dream, we'll see what comes of it.  I'd need to make a more regular practice of it myself before I could even justify pursuing it further.  🤷‍♂️

It's a nice idea. Creaky inflexible men deserve yoga, too, not just cats and stretchy women.

Midweek update!

Finally picking up a little more momentum, seems like.  We've had a couple of Life conversations at home lately, mostly where it's going to be and what it's going to look like, and part of that has been what I want out of it (i.e. what's going to pay the bills), so that's really driving home the point that I need to be working on my own goals consistency if I want to ever dabble in coaching and/or yoga classes.  Obviously these aren't a tomorrow goal, there's a bit of a grind between now and that vision, but it's a helpful ember to feel under my feet at least.

Valid points.  There's a definitely a need for it, and it feels like the beginning of a passion, once I can wrap my head around my own consistent practice and maybe figure out my approach to things.  It's not an easy goal by a long shot, but could be a rare (for me, at least) point of calling.  One angle I am contemplating is building up my 'average dude' clout and marketing towards other average dudes, oldsters, fellow veterans and lifting and combat sports practitioners by eliminate the Namaste side of things and just focusing on mindfulness, breathing, and flexibility sort of thing.  Make the practice approachable without the elements men are likely to feel turned off by.  It's the start of something at least.

I've only been dabbling on the free trial so far, but I'm loving the attention to detail and animation for the cities and character clothing so far.  I have a Miqo'te Pugilist who I'd love to turn into a Samurai.  The lizard people are pretty deadly too, such an intense run animation!  It's just Warcraft enough that it feels familiar but just foreign enough that I actually feel like I'm learning again.

What I’ve seen be successful as an approach for the fitness minded in yoga:

Sean Vigue’s approach to yoga for athletes - I came across him through a HIIT program I used to do as an active recovery day. His classes can be hard af, but they’re really good:

https://youtube.com/c/SeanVigueFitness

My BIL is active in promoting yoga to ex-soldiers through Soflete (and before that, Men’s Health Magazine  did a feature on yoga for the SF community - baby BIL is pictured center). Doug may be a good person to talk to about that direction.

Joe Rogan and other fight oriented guys promote yoga for combat sports. There’s some other dude? I assume a Gracie, but my brain tends to quit listening because all of those dudes’ names are too similar.

And one of my fav teachers approaches it from the functional movement aspect (Functional Yoga) - he dips into breath work and the connectedness of the body which may or may not be woo, but isn’t ‘yoga as a religion’ woo. https://davjonesyoga.com - he’s got both YouTube classes *and* Zoom online live classes available at annoying for me so possibly convenient for you times. He looooooves getting into the serratus muscles and diaphragmatic breathing. If this style resonates with you, Dav is also a super chill guy and may be a good resource to chat with about the process of Teacher Training and what skills to build, etc.

As for yoga for the average joe, that’s literally the tag line from one of my favorite teachers from NYC: YoJo Yoga.  Jessa’s about and corporate page might be of inspiration; her whole deal is wanting to bring yoga to people who don’t feel it’s accessible to them and she’s found great success in the corporate yoga setting. https://www.yojo.co/about. She’s woo, but she’s got a great calling and good business model.

Ping me when you’re ready if you want an intro to any of the resources I know personally. I’m sure they’d all be happy to chat about their passions :)

Sunday wrap-up.

Hasn't been a perfect week, had 3 really long work days but got small workouts in before at least a couple of them and nutrition has been relatively on track, so those are wins.  I think I feel like I'm struggling more than I actually am because consistency, especially given my personal struggles and lockdown, etc. is really the key.  I still haven't been able to make yoga stick so next week I'm going to adjust my goals a little to build a campaign of small micro-wins... just like I adjusted my workouts down to 5 from 6 to make it seem more manageable without the guilt of 'failing', I'm going to set my yoga goal at 3 sessions of 5:00+ throughout the whole week.  Just to kickstart the habit.  Hopefully that ends up looking like Yoga With Adriene, but I haven't even opened one of those emails yet, and I can't very well pledge myself to helping others through yoga if I'm not doing it myself, now can I?  *hmph*

That said, work has actually picked up and I've made more than enough money to handle these current bills and my next coming up.  That helps mitigate the lockdown financial woes.  I am hoping there are no install calls today so I can clean up a bit around home and square myself away for the week a little.

Just serves as another reminder that consistency isn't and habits adapt and every day is another chance to succeed and success isn't always linear.

I summon Jake Gyllenhaal. Jake Gyllenhaal uses  [man bun boxing].  It's super effective!

That said, I'm nowhere near ready to contribute.  It's just an inkling of a sparkle of an idea at this point, and I very much need to cement my own foundations in a practice before I even bother exploring a contribution any further.  :)

It's also one of my larger anxieties; finances, fitness, and femme fatales.  So when the finances fall in order, and the femmes aren't frustrating, that leaves just fitness to focus on.

I much prefer stressing out over only on F rather than all 3.  ;)

Oh me too! My entry to striking was in Karate-style kickboxing and there's almost no head movement in my curriculum. Like I got exposed to it a couple times? But then my teacher was like, "Yeah, boxers do it good, but boxers don't have to deal with kicking." But then OTOH I see stuff like this and I really, really want to take up boxing:

I'm reminded of when I read about someone asking Bruce Lee if he thought he could take on Muhammed Ali. Lee set up some mirrors in his home and got film reels of Ali practicing and boxing to analyze Ali's style. Lee came to the conclusion Ali could kill him due to Ali's superior height and weight.

Yeah. This speaks to two things: 1, that boxing is the science of positioning, and it seems to make any striking you do better in addition to being good on its own; and 2, that weight classes exist for a reason; technique can overcome strength and size advantages, but strength and size are easier to teach and go a lot farther a lot faster.

That video is beautiful.  I'd love to take a few seminars/classes/whatever on purely defensive boxing just for the psychological edge.  Not that I have any intention of fighting.  But it would be fun for sparring 🤣 but overall I'm just not a fan of conventional boxing.  The answer is too complicated to articulate, but succinctly, I find it kind of lame.  🤷‍♀️

I'll gladly take your striking points when/if you take it up though!  haha

I fully support your use of Kenshin for gif choice.

Also I feel like I should make a "no luck, all skill" remark but honestly I'll take some luck all the same!  ;)   Glad to have you along!

These arguments are so moot (and tricky) because they'd never happen.  Athletes almost never cross sport lines (minus a few notable exceptions like McGregor v Mayweather) and then there's the question of style counters (oh how I miss the early days of UFC when honest-to-goodness martial arts of various disciplines was the norm rather than the monotony of MMA with slight variances accounting for backgrounds) before we even bring up weight classes and factors like age, experience, and reach.

Which sport's rules would they fight under?  If it's boxing, of course it would be Ali.  Make it martial weapons, I'd give that to Lee.  Add strikes other than punching, giving Ali 6 months to prepare?  I'd still have money on Lee... maybe.  It's almost a Rock Paper Scissors argument at some point 🤣 and I'm not even a fan of either tbh!

But god I'd love to see it all the same.  ;)

One of my favorite films is Marlowe with Bruce Lee and James Garner.

It's hilarious but as always Bruce Lee was soooo cool! Here's a clip:

Plus who can't love Muhammad Ali!!!

I mean, that's kind of the beauty of the Brave New World that martial arts finds itself in. You can do whatever you want, and you're free to explore and to take as you wish, without having to be tied to any one style's traditions or ways of doing things.

And honestly? If I hadn't been inoculated against lameness by Karate, I'd probably find boxing to be pretty lame too.

Well, and it's more complicated than that, too. Fighting's a business as well as a... condition... and frankly in the case of McGregor v Mayweather, that fight was never going to happen unless Mayweather knew he was going to win. (which isn't to knock his skill; he's good at managing the ring and his defense to my understanding is very, very good).

As to Ali v Lee, the only thing I'll say is that Ali was an athlete and Lee was an actor. I can give a pretty deep dive on the distinctions and the history of both for fandom reasons
