After today's session was done I headed out for my run.  Same route as last time, but this time I increased my running intervals to 2mins30 with 1min walk in between.  Covered the 2.22M in 24:47 @ 11:09/mile average, and by the end of it I was definitely looking forward to the walk breaks!  Looking forward to getting to run offroad and during daylight at the weekend though.

Not too shabby!

Good luck with the assessment

Cheers, it went well!  Glad I only have to do it every three years though...

-------------------------------------------------

Time for a brief catch-up!

Friday weight: 117.5kg

Thursday steps: 6070 (1238 under target for the week)

Thursday calories: 2561 (70 under target for the week)

Saturday weight: 117.8kg

Friday steps: 7642 (404 over target for the week) - didn't feel like going for a walk after work but I made myself get it done, especially knowing that we were going to be having a treat meal.

Friday calories: 2711 (59 over target for the week) - pizza & chips (from the supermarket, but still very nice indeed) - deliberately reduced my intake earlier on in the day though.

Sunday weight: 118.3kg

Saturday steps: 13,483 (7887 over target for the week) - got another run in, then we went for a walk as well.

Saturday calories: 2449 (74 under target for the week)

Monday weight: 117.4kg

Sunday steps: 10,659 (12,546 over target for the week) -another decent weekend walk.

Sunday calories: 3402 (746 over target for the week) - ate & drank well today, then realised where my calories were for the week and decided I could have some wine with dinner.

Wish I'd kept my thread a bit more up to date over the last few days, I'm sure there was more stuff I could have written but I'm mainly just quite surprised at how the calories have been going.  Hopefully see that reflected in my weight now the weekend's out of the way.

Tuesday weight: 116.8kg - first time back in the 116s this year!

Sunday steps: 5148 (11,694 over target for the week) - cut my walk slightly short as I wanted to be back for the evening's Coronoavirus briefing on TV.  Thought they might be bringing in more restrictions or something, but nothing changed.  Didn't even have Professor Chris Witty there.

Sunday calories: 2296 (460 over target for the week) nearly back to neutral now.

Today was a looong day at work with a bit of overtime, so then it was already dark when it came to going out for my run.  Was tempted to find an excuse to not go, but there clearly wasn't a good one so I headed out on the usual route for my third 2:30/1:00 walk/run.  2.23M in 24:43 @ 11:04/mile av. done, so next time I'll move on up to 3:00/1:00 split.  Not sure if my left leg is feeling a bit shin splinty though, so if I'm not certain I'll just walk next week and then give it a go the week after.  No point getting carried away in January and causing a proper injury now, plenty of year left for that...

Wednesday weight: 116.1kg - that's 1.2kg down on last week, which I'm pretty damn chuffed with!

Tuesday steps: 5446 (11,140 over target for the week) - very pleased with that week's total - this goes up to 7000/day now, so it's going to take a bit more effort to reach, depending on how far we go at the weekends.

Tuesday calories: 2344 (222 over target for the week) - well within my +/-750 target - this week's target narrows down further to +/-500, so I'm going to have to keep a close eye on things.  On the plus side, if I carry on like this then I won't have to do it for too long before I can go to maintenance for a bit!

Current progress so far:

Won't be anything new to report today - tonight's grocery shopping night, that's all.  We finished S1 of Runaways last night, and I've got the finale of Discovery lined up for tonight.  Then this week we've got WandaVision starting, the UK & US Drag Race seasons, plus 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown starts up again, so our evenings of not being allowed to leave the house should pass pretty fine!

Have you had shin splints much in the past? When I first picked up running a few summers ago, making sure my cool down had a nice long stretch was super helpful for me.

Never been a problem before - my guess is the frozen ground I was running on over the few days before. Plenty of stretching now!

Thursday weight: 117.2kg - the Welshman made a nice healthy cottage pie for dinner, and we've noticed that the day after a meal like that our weight always spikes a bit.  Not concerned, sure it'll be gone again tomorrow.

Wednesday steps: 4451 (2549 under target for the week) - weekly grocery shop done.

Wednesday calories: 2525 (42 under target for the week) - a solid start to the week.

Friday weight: 116.0kg - told you so!

Thursday steps: 4633 (4916 under target for the week) - had a loooooong day at work and also did an hour's overtime, so my brain was fried by the time I finished.  Decided a short walk was better than none, then flaked out on the sofa and read a bit of my book to let my brain recover.  For some reason reading doesn't count as effort or thinking?

Thursday calories: 2458 (151 under target for the week) - carefully kept my calories down again in order to earn some Friday night rum.  Which I am currently drinking while I type this!

Definitely feeling some shin splints at the moment after all, so I'm leaving the running off for a week and walking instead, plus stretching to see if that helps.  The weather looks absolutley miserable on Saturday as well so not sure we'll be able to make it out for much of a walk, so gonna have to do plenty on Sunday to clear some of that deficit!

I was also thinking about finding a way of easing back into some kind of home workouts though, as the gyms are clearly going to be closed until at least March, so I think I'm going to try to get back into using the Ring Fit over the weekend.  That should at least simulate some steps for my Fitbit and also start getting my muscles remembering what activity felt like...

Weekend update time!  And I was right about the weather on Saturday being rubbish, we woke up to full on snow so we had a snow day!

Saturday weight: 116.2kg

Friday steps: 6288 (5628 under target for the week) - bit annoyed with myself for this one, my post-work walk could have been that little bit longer and hit my daily target here.

Friday calories: 3193 (475 over target for the week) - rum was good.  And so was WandaVision!

Sunday weight: 115.8kg - new low, albeit probably due to dehydration...

Saturday steps: 4762 (7866 under target for the week) - I'm amazed it even got this high seeing as we didn't leave the house all day - I got persuaded to go on the Ring Fit and the half hour I grudgingly targetted turned into 45mins without me really noticing.  Lots of time spent on Assassin's Creed: Origins as well.

Saturday calories: 3179 (1087 over target for the week) - we got through a fair bit of wine with dinner and then with various Switch games, but the nice healthy dinner compensated nicely for that.  Chicken thighs marrinaded in honey, dijon mustard, and garlic granules with potato wedges 😋

Monday weight: 116.3kg

Sunday steps: 10,768 (4078 under target for the week)

Sunday calories: 2513 (1033 over target for the week) - I made our mildly hungover selves a nice little brunch of cheesy sprouts and bacon (warning - most of the recipes on this blog come with a side serving of smut and innuendo) and was really pleased with how it turned out!  Then we made a slow-roasted lamb dinner and went out for a little walk before and after, so that started making up for all the steps we didn't do over the rest of the week.

Today after work I plugged in a podcast and set off to do a longer walk to make up some of the deficit.  Just shy of 4 miles later, and getting my steps back to the weekly target is now doable tomorrow.  Just need to remember to not take my Fitbit off for too long during the day while I'm at work!

Ah, not feeling it so far?  I have to say, after the first episode I was mainly bemused, but by the end of the next one I was intrigued enough to want to know what happens next.

These guys are not normally that bad, honest!  And their cookbooks got a little blurb with each recipe that normally makes you cackle...

-----------------------------------------

Tuesday weight: 116.0kg

Monday steps: 9661 (1417 under target for the week) - nearly caught up now!

Monday calories: 2350 (816 over target for the week) - caught up a bit today, dinner was smoked basa fillets with new potatoes & broccoli and was surprisingly tasty!  Reckon this one will make it back onto the menu again soon enough.

Tuesday was quite a loooong day at work, but afterwards I headed out for just shy of another four miles and I have officially hit my step target for the week!  Just.  But it counts!

About to cook dinner (gammon, egg, chips, and peas) and then make the shopping list for our next week's meals ready for tomorrow's Asda trip - so far we have some BBQ burnt ends with wedges, pork shoulder steaks, chicken tikka sag, homemade pasta, and a Breakfast Bake.  Reckon that should do us well!

Cheers, I don't think I ever really thought I'd come close to missing it so this week was a bit of a reality check!

----------------------------------------------------

Wednsday weight: 115.0kg - that's 1kg down on this time last week!

Tuesday steps: 9842(1425 over target for the week) - pulled it back with a nice margin in  the end!

Tuesday calories: 2225 (474 over target for the week) - got down to within my margin again.

A successful week!  Here's how the weight graph is currently looking:

image.png.f441c38938a5d49a73850794aa1d07bc.png

And an update on how my goals are going after three weeks:

1) Keep total calories within an acceptable range of my weekly calorie total (exact figure depends on my weight that week) - slightly over in Week 1 due to NYE occurring, but since then I've been within my target and it's now sticking at +/-500 of my calorie target.

2) Hit my weekly step target - three wins so far (just!)

3) Run 2-3 times per week -  had to take this week off to get rid of the shin splints, and it still feels like they could come right back again so I'm having another week of just walking.

LQ) Read more books - finished the Joe Marler book last weekend, and I'm nearly finished rereading Not a Diet Book so this week I should get started on my next one.

Pretty pleased with how things are going so far - on with Week 4!

There are ski resorts at Perisher and Thredbo, about 6 hrs drive south of me. The snow is a bit shit. Japan is amazing and not that far, NZ is closer,  haven't been but am told it's decent.

Let's see, it's been a few days since I updated this thing.  Without wanting to go into too much detail, I got a call from my Mum at the end of last week to let me know that there's been a Covid outbreak in the care home she works in, and lots of the staff and residents had tested positive - they had only got their vaccines a week before, so not long enough for them to gain the protection from it.  A couple of days later my parents tested positive, but thankfully Mum so far has only got a sore throat and Dad is completely asymptomatic.  Fingers crossed that continues to be a case, and after nearly a week that must bode well.

On Monday I then got a notification through the NHS app that I had been in contact with someone and needed to isolate until the end of this coming Saturday, so by counting back that appears to be last Wednesday.  My guess is that my phone got too close to Dad's when I dropped off their shopping (outside the back door, obviously didn't go inside or anywhere near them) so I have been self-isolating in the house all week so far.

Anyway, had a bit of a diet break and obviously not been able to go for any walks, so the end of last week was kind of a wash.  But on Sunday I can leave the house again (and I'll be going for a run in the morning!), and I'm back to the proper tracking again, so it's time to see if I can push on down to 110kg over the course February.

Spoiler

2112118493_Screenshot_20210128-084119_NHSCovid-19.thumb.jpg.8af8a8893891d4371930322c09e1ee52.jpg

Wednesday weight: 116.3kg - definitely didn't overeat enough to put that much back on, so I'm guessing that was mainly water weight.

Thursday weight: 115.8kg - already heading in the right direction again.

Wednesday steps: 1876 (2124 under target for the week) - I have now seen how many steps I will routinely do if I don't leave the house during the week, and it does not usually get over 2000.  With that in mind, I've stuck my daily average to 4000 for this week as from Sunday onwards I should be able to make up for lost ground.

Wednesday calories: 2519 (33 under target for the week) - we did probably drink a bit too much wine over the last few days, so got to reign that in again now.  Got three nice new meals planned for the weekend though, so the food should be very much on point!

Glad your parents appear to have a mild case, I hope it stays that way. Good on you for self-isolating.

Thanks, over a week after their tests and so far the worst they've had is sore throats, so cautiously optimistic that'll be the worst of it.

I remain completely symtom free with one day of self-isolation left. Because of this, technically the Welshman could have left the house as it's only me that legally needs to isolate, but we figured if there's a chance I have it then there's the same chance he does too, so how could he justify going out if he doesn't need to?

Hope it's sunny tomorrow. Looking forward to a good walk.

Nothing much happened during the end of last week - stayed at home, we played a lot of games on the Switch, and on Saturday we celebrated getting the lease on our bungalow renewed for another year.  Very glad I'm not going to have to move house for a second time during the pandemic.

The food was really good over the weekend as well - on Friday I made us Korean BBQ Bowls, on Saturday the Welshman made us Honey & Mustard Salmon, and last night I made Balsamic Chicken.  All new recipes from that same cookbook, and all three will definitely be getting made again!  Albeit with a couple of tweaks to make them even more to our tastes.

Monday weight: 115.7kg - the usual Monday bounce, was 114.8kg on Sunday morning...

Sunday steps: 18,071 (8407 over target for the week) - I went outside on Sunday!  Firstly did a little run round the rugby field in the morning, this time a 3min/1min run/walk split - 2.04M in 21:28 @ 10:31/mile av.  Definitely feeling the hamstrings DOMS today, so I'm going to try the same thing again on Thursday evening and see how that goes.

Sunday calories: 2481 (1985 over target for the week) - we went for a walk to drop the recycling off at the bottle bank and then took the very long route round to the supermarket to pick up a couple of things that we needed - 5.31 miles later, my step average for the week has well and truly recovered!  Next week it'll be back up to the usuall 7000/day target.

Went out for a walk after work this evening and it was actually still proper daylight when I left the house!  That makes a very nice change.  And when I got back we played Just Dance 2020 on the Switch and it was surprisingly hard work!  Looks like some cheeky extra bits of cardio will be sneaking into my day now.
