Ranger Hal - Focus

Ranger Hal

Recommended Posts

When I started out with Nerd Fitness, I thought maybe I fit into the Adventurer guild based on my activities, but I picked the Rangers, well, mostly because I have imagined myself as a ranger of one kind or another for years. But after being there for a year, I realize that it was probably the right choice. I want to do all the things. Over the year, I’ve done some running, body weight workouts, rucking, kettlebell workouts, pull-ups, mobility workouts, and probably more that I’m not remembering. But right now, I need to focus, and it needs to be on Adventurer things. I’m in a mountaineering class that’s starting up (last year it got cancelled in March due to Covid) and I really need to focus on fitness and learning related to that class and not get distracted by all the other shiny things that come along (sorry kettlebell). I'm also a search and rescue volunteer and keeping up on my rigging skills would be a good thing (there's some overlap with climbing skills which is helpful). So, here’s what I’m doing.

Hike – one weeknight per week. 25+ lb pack, minimum 3 miles and 1000' elevation gain.

Learn – at least 15 minutes per day. Week 1, I have a navigation class. Week 2, I have a first aid class. After that will be general reading (mountaineering book, avalanche book, etc.) or other learning as it comes up.

Practice – one weeknight per week. Knots or some other climbing/rigging skill practice. Could also be a group practice of some sort (if that happens).

Netflix/TV Shows – must get up and do something before starting a new episode. Could be one of the above listed things or something else like dishes, laundry, cleaning.

Sleep – Week 1: no TV show episodes started after 11pm, in bed by midnight. Move back by 15 minutes every week, so by week 5, it’s in bed by 11pm.

I keep wanting to add more things (daily walking, some other sort of exercise, drinking water, cleaning, yardwork, etc.), but I'm not going to. Focus. My challenges start on Mondays.

Welcome to our little corner. It’s a good place to be.  A lot of us train like Rangers but I always say it’s the spirit (and our desire to apply our training) that makes an Adventurer.

I’m interested to know what, if any, home practice you have for mountaineering.

Thanks for the welcome!

Most of my home practice has been knots, tying into the rope, that sort of thing. Back around April, when my class was on hold to see what would happen with Covid, I did a full rappel setup off my chin-up bar (rope looped over the bar instead of through a rappel ring). I could probably set up some rope over the roof beams on my covered porch and practice climbing the rope for crevasse rescue (it would be a very short climb), although I wasn't having any trouble with that when we had indoor practices at the mountaineers center, so I might not do it at home with less than half the height. When I get some more rope, I will practice setting up a raise system for crevasse rescue (and also for rigging). The porch support posts or trees in the yard will probably be the anchors. Not terribly accurate for crevasse rescue anchors, but I don't have a glacier (or even snow most of the time) in my yard!

If you have other ideas, I'd love to hear them!

I did rock climbing in Boy Scouts and on a couple of vacations, and I taught the knots for my troop. But that was a while ago. These days I have my pull up bar (which I’m only passing with) and I could fashion a short climbing rope off my deck but I have two fearless children who’d probably get hurt on it (and one reasonable child who would be fine).

I did a very short time with a volunteer fire department in college but wasn’t around long enough to do anything besides some training and a lot of washing of the engines. I was super interested in SAR when I was younger but a bit less so with the arrival of kids. Still, highly interested in the skills, and in climbing (as well as hiking and exploring).

SAR may still be an option as your kids get older, especially if they may also be interested. I don't know what it's like in your area, but my unit allows kids to join when they're 14 and we've had a number of parents join at the same time as their teens. We've also had a number of folks who stopped coming out very often once they became new parents, so I totally get that side of it as well.

Good to know. I’m not sure what it’s like in my area either, and it’s been a decade since I’ve had contacts with anyone I knew from that group in my area.

Folding laundry is a great activity for during the show as well. Just saying. ;)

Thanks! I decided not to start the challenge until Monday, so no real progress yet, although I have been sometimes getting up to do other things after I finish a tv episode. I found the Netflix setting that turns off the automatic starting of the next episode, but haven't watched anything yet to test it. I was actually looking for a way to make it play the entire credits instead of jumping to the next episode, but hopefully this will do that and also remind me to do something before starting the next episode.

I am not starting till Monday either. I just wasn't quite ready to switch out of holiday mode this week. That is a genius idea. I find that setting up little reminders and cues are very helpful, because half the time that I miss a goal, it is more because I forgot than because I just decided I didn't feel like it.

I suppose I should do a progress report:

Hike - didn't happen this week.

Learn - pretty good. There was one night when I didn't do any, but I still got through all of the online part of the navigation class.

Practice - didn't happen.

Netflix - very good. I did something else after every episode (although some nights,  that was because I didn't have enough time to watch more than one).

Sleep - not so good. Most of the time I didn't start any new tv episodes after 11pm, but I don't think I ever turned the lights off before midnight. And last night, I made the mistake of picking up one of the Queen's Thief books. With the exception of the first one, I can pick up any of those at any point and read for hours.

I really need the hike to happen, or I need to find some other exercise.

Do you have any strategies that might help you get the hike in? Like maybe scheduling it so you have the time available, or have your gear out and ready to go so it acts as a visual cue?

Nothing that's currently working. I don't seem to have a problem ignoring schedules if I'm the only one affected. Also, this week was just bad as far as timing because I had extra church stuff that took time away from work, so I felt the need to work late to make up for it (my current project makes it easy to get lost in the analysis and work late on normal days too, so that's not helping) and starting a hike at 9pm isn't ideal (although I know people who have done it because that's the only time they had free). My gear is almost always out and ready (because of SAR) and the only extra thing I could do there would be to move it 3 feet to be directly in front of the door.

I think I'm also slightly uneasy about hiking alone in the dark right now (it's always dark when I have time to hike on weekdays this time of year). I've done it a number of times before and sometimes it's nice to be all alone in the woods in the dark, but right now something just doesn't feel right about it. Maybe I'm feeling lonely and isolated enough already? I should probably ask around and see if anyone else wants to go hiking (cue social anxiety). I miss my pre-Covid hiking group that had something scheduled almost every week, even though I didn't end up going on a lot of the hikes. They were there when I did want to go.

In happier news, I can still navigate with a compass! I was helping instruct a nav class in order to renew my certification and got paired with a student (there were an odd number of students) for some of the compass exercises and we did really well, even though it felt like we were really struggling at times.

Okay, here's an updated plan.

Hike - the original plan is not working. One hike a week that I'm apparently not all that motivated to do will not lead to success and any exercise is better than no exercise. So, I'm going back to kettlebell workouts on Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday. And I'm going to try hiking in the morning on Monday/Wednesday. That will be hard because I don't like to get up in the morning, so we'll see how it goes. The morning hikes will take 1 hour total, 10 minutes driving each way and 40 minutes hiking. There are a couple of trailheads that close to my house. There's not as much elevation gain as I want, but if I can get myself out hiking in the morning, I can work on building distance and elevation later. Friday is a rest day. I'm not scheduling anything on Saturday because my Saturdays tend to fill up with various outdoor activities anyway.

Learn - this is going well, partly because I had nav class last week and first aid class this week. The real test will be next week when my classes are over.

Practice - I think I'm going to plan this for Fridays.

TV Shows - I've been doing pretty well getting up and accomplishing something between episodes.

Sleep - I don't think it's any good moving to an 11:45 pm bedtime when I haven't even been getting to bed before midnight. So attempted bedtime remains at midnight. I am moving the tv show episode final start time to 10:45 pm. Maybe the extra time will make bedtime more achievable (as long as I don't stay up reading well past midnight).

I will report progress every night. Sleep will be reported for the previous night.

I’m checking in. I’m still working out a better way to get to threads from the email but I’ve been following.

I hear a lot of good things about kettlebell workouts. I don’t suppose there’s anyone who would be interested in committing to a hiking schedule with you?

One thing to keep in mind is that the wavelength of light a TV (or a phone or computer for that matter) emits has been shown to wake people up and at the very least reduce the quality of sleep. It can also keep some people from falling asleep at all, especially if they’re looking to hit a goal.

I need to renew my CPR certification. We took a course as new parents to be, combined with an infant choking rescue course that our third child spent a year just determined to ensure we were well-practiced on.

Due to Covid, that's kind of tricky. The people I would normally ask to go hiking are still hiking, but their photos always have the same small group, so I'm guessing that's their pod. I don't want to put them in a position of having to say that I'm outside of the pod and can't come, especially since I'm doing one or two things that could be considered risky due to Covid. I actually ran into them at the trailhead this morning! I was the first car in the lot and did a short hike that didn't really get to a destination. It was nice. There was daylight and the weather was decent (there was a big storm last night). When I got back, there were three more cars and it was my friends getting ready to start their own hike. It was very nice to see them briefly!

The other group that I could ask are the folks in my mountaineering class, but my small group is mostly men, which is fine, but there are a couple of them that I don't know well enough yet to be comfortable ending up with on a one-on-one night hike and with the size of the group and different schedules, having just one other person available when I want to hike seems pretty likely. My brain is probably playing games with me and making excuses, but there it is. (For the record, I don't think there's a personal safety issue here. It's more a social awkwardness issue.)

Yeah, it’s one of those things you don’t really know how you’ll act in until you face it. Jessie and I both tend to work well together and take decisive action it seems, but Woody’s godfather Marinara froze the one time. I think in part because he didn’t actually know what to do. Choking on a sticker is a special kind of scary.  So was the dog attacking our dog a year ago and Bo Peep’s scary and sudden birth complication.

Yes, I cleared a bunch of branches off the trail and left some for other people to clear (I'm currently operating on the idea that if everyone clears a few branches off the trail, pretty soon, they'll all be cleared). There were a couple that will probably require a chain saw and I didn't even attempt to do anything with them.

Based on my reactions in other situations, I suspect I would freeze because I would think I don't know what to do, or I would know what to do but not be sure if now was the right time to do it. I guess I'll find out some time. I'm generally more capable than I believe myself to be.

I will say, it helps to have training just beaten into your head. I seriously doubt Marinara practiced that stuff nearly as much as we have, and other things like me snatching my dog away from the other one and Jessie checking to ensure she wasn’t wounded worse we’re just part of the training (me, a former wrestling coach, just doing a double leg takedown on my dog and the sprint-carrying her like I’d practiced during my Disney World training and her systematically checking for wounds and assigning people to put pressure on them).

I hear that they say similar things in basic training. Drill the heck out of it so when you’re scared and panicky you don’t have to think to do it. If you have to think about the process, it’s not practiced enough.

I believe you can do it.
