Ranger Hal Posted December 29, 2020 Report Share Posted December 29, 2020 When I started out with Nerd Fitness, I thought maybe I fit into the Adventurer guild based on my activities, but I picked the Rangers, well, mostly because I have imagined myself as a ranger of one kind or another for years. But after being there for a year, I realize that it was probably the right choice. I want to do all the things. Over the year, I’ve done some running, body weight workouts, rucking, kettlebell workouts, pull-ups, mobility workouts, and probably more that I’m not remembering. But right now, I need to focus, and it needs to be on Adventurer things. I’m in a mountaineering class that’s starting up (last year it got cancelled in March due to Covid) and I really need to focus on fitness and learning related to that class and not get distracted by all the other shiny things that come along (sorry kettlebell). I'm also a search and rescue volunteer and keeping up on my rigging skills would be a good thing (there's some overlap with climbing skills which is helpful). So, here’s what I’m doing. Hike – one weeknight per week. 25+ lb pack, minimum 3 miles and 1000' elevation gain. Learn – at least 15 minutes per day. Week 1, I have a navigation class. Week 2, I have a first aid class. After that will be general reading (mountaineering book, avalanche book, etc.) or other learning as it comes up. Practice – one weeknight per week. Knots or some other climbing/rigging skill practice. Could also be a group practice of some sort (if that happens). Netflix/TV Shows – must get up and do something before starting a new episode. Could be one of the above listed things or something else like dishes, laundry, cleaning. Sleep – Week 1: no TV show episodes started after 11pm, in bed by midnight. Move back by 15 minutes every week, so by week 5, it’s in bed by 11pm. I keep wanting to add more things (daily walking, some other sort of exercise, drinking water, cleaning, yardwork, etc.), but I'm not going to. Focus. Back around April, when my class was on hold to see what would happen with Covid, I did a full rappel setup off my chin-up bar (rope looped over the bar instead of through a rappel ring). I could probably set up some rope over the roof beams on my covered porch and practice climbing the rope for crevasse rescue (it would be a very short climb), although I wasn't having any trouble with that when we had indoor practices at the mountaineers center, so I might not do it at home with less than half the height. When I get some more rope, I will practice setting up a raise system for crevasse rescue (and also for rigging). The porch support posts or trees in the yard will probably be the anchors. Not terribly accurate for crevasse rescue anchors, but I don't have a glacier (or even snow most of the time) in my yard! Sciread77 Posted December 30, 2020 Report Share Posted December 30, 2020 I did rock climbing in Boy Scouts and on a couple of vacations, and I taught the knots for my troop. But that was a while ago. These days I have my pull up bar (which I’m only passing with) and I could fashion a short climbing rope off my deck but I have two fearless children who’d probably get hurt on it (and one reasonable child who would be fine). I did a very short time with a volunteer fire department in college but wasn’t around long enough to do anything besides some training and a lot of washing of the engines. I was super interested in SAR when I was younger but a bit less so with the arrival of kids. I don't know what it's like in your area, but my unit allows kids to join when they're 14 and we've had a number of parents join at the same time as their teens. I found the Netflix setting that turns off the automatic starting of the next episode, but haven't watched anything yet to test it. I am not starting till Monday either. I just wasn't quite ready to switch out of holiday mode this week. That is a genius idea. Ranger Hal Posted January 9, 2021 Author Report Share Posted January 9, 2021 I suppose I should do a progress report: Hike - didn't happen this week. Learn - pretty good. There was one night when I didn't do any, but I still got through all of the online part of the navigation class. Practice - didn't happen. Netflix - very good. I did something else after every episode (although some nights, that was because I didn't have enough time to watch more than one). Sleep - not so good. Most of the time I didn't start any new tv episodes after 11pm, but I don't think I ever turned the lights off before midnight. And last night, I made the mistake of picking up one of the Queen's Thief books. With the exception of the first one, I can pick up any of those at any point and read for hours. I don't seem to have a problem ignoring schedules if I'm the only one affected. Also, this week was just bad as far as timing because I had extra church stuff that took time away from work, so I felt the need to work late to make up for it (my current project makes it easy to get lost in the analysis and work late on normal days too, so that's not helping) and starting a hike at 9pm isn't ideal (although I know people who have done it because that's the only time they had free). My gear is almost always out and ready (because of SAR) and the only extra thing I could do there would be to move it 3 feet to be directly in front of the door. I think I'm also slightly uneasy about hiking alone in the dark right now (it's always dark when I have time to hike on weekdays this time of year). I've done it a number of times before and sometimes it's nice to be all alone in the woods in the dark, but right now something just doesn't feel right about it. Maybe I'm feeling lonely and isolated enough already? I should probably ask around and see if anyone else wants to go hiking (cue social anxiety). I miss my pre-Covid hiking group that had something scheduled almost every week, even though I didn't end up going on a lot of the hikes. Ranger Hal Posted January 12, 2021 Author Report Share Posted January 12, 2021 Okay, here's an updated plan. Hike - the original plan is not working. One hike a week that I'm apparently not all that motivated to do will not lead to success and any exercise is better than no exercise. So, I'm going back to kettlebell workouts on Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday. And I'm going to try hiking in the morning on Monday/Wednesday. That will be hard because I don't like to get up in the morning, so we'll see how it goes. The morning hikes will take 1 hour total, 10 minutes driving each way and 40 minutes hiking. There are a couple of trailheads that close to my house. There's not as much elevation gain as I want, but if I can get myself out hiking in the morning, I can work on building distance and elevation later. Friday is a rest day. I'm not scheduling anything on Saturday because my Saturdays tend to fill up with various outdoor activities anyway. Learn - this is going well, partly because I had nav class last week and first aid class this week. The real test will be next week when my classes are over. Practice - I think I'm going to plan this for Fridays. TV Shows - I've been doing pretty well getting up and accomplishing something between episodes. Sleep - I don't think it's any good moving to an 11:45 pm bedtime when I haven't even been getting to bed before midnight. So attempted bedtime remains at midnight. I am moving the tv show episode final start time to 10:45 pm. Maybe the extra time will make bedtime more achievable (as long as I don't stay up reading well past midnight). I will report progress every night. I hear a lot of good things about kettlebell workouts. I don’t suppose there’s anyone who would be interested in committing to a hiking schedule with you? One thing to keep in mind is that the wavelength of light a TV (or a phone or computer for that matter) emits has been shown to wake people up and at the very least reduce the quality of sleep. It can also keep some people from falling asleep at all, especially if they’re looking to hit a goal. I need to renew my CPR certification. I don't want to put them in a position of having to say that I'm outside of the pod and can't come, especially since I'm doing one or two things that could be considered risky due to Covid. I actually ran into them at the trailhead this morning! I was the first car in the lot and did a short hike that didn't really get to a destination. It was nice. There was daylight and the weather was decent (there was a big storm last night). When I got back, there were three more cars and it was my friends getting ready to start their own hike. It was very nice to see them briefly! The other group that I could ask are the folks in my mountaineering class, but my small group is mostly men, which is fine, but there are a couple of them that I don't know well enough yet to be comfortable ending up with on a one-on-one night hike and with the size of the group and different schedules, having just one other person available when I want to hike seems pretty likely. My brain is probably playing games with me and making excuses, but there it is. (For the record, I don't think there's a personal safety issue here. Even just around my neighborhood, there were lots of branches and one giant tree limb Yes, I cleared a bunch of branches off the trail and left some for other people to clear (I'm currently operating on the idea that if everyone clears a few branches off the trail, pretty soon, they'll all be cleared). Based on my reactions in other situations, I suspect I would freeze because I would think I don't know what to do, or I would know what to do but not be sure if now was the right time to do it. I seriously doubt Marinara practiced that stuff nearly as much as we have, and other things like me snatching my dog away from the other one and Jessie checking to ensure she wasn’t wounded worse we’re just part of the training (me, a former wrestling coach, just doing a double leg takedown on my dog and the sprint-carrying her like I’d practiced during my Disney World training and her systematically checking for wounds and assigning people to put pressure on them). I hear that they say similar things in basic training. Drill the heck out of it so when you’re scared and panicky you don’t have to think to do it. If you have to think about the process, it’s not practiced enough. Well, several search and rescue leaders and an awesome work boss kept pushing me gradually over several years to take on more responsibility.
