Day 2.4

I've picked up a new mini-goal that I hope to carry on beyond this challenge -- TAKING REAL LUNCH BREAKS, which I'm defining as not sitting in front of my work laptop for at least 30 minutes. I did that when I joined my friend for lunch on Wednesday, of course, but it need not be that intense. I can go for a walk, do some stretching, or literally just eat my lunch in a DIFFERENT CHAIR. All of these things would count.

I will say that this makes an ENORMOUS difference. I've been 'taking a lunch' for a few months and it's such a nice mental break. Often, I'll eat, and then take the time to do some small chore like washing up some dishes or sweeping up strewn cat litter, or making the bed or gathering laundry from the closet floor--little maintenance tasks that easily fit in ~5-10 minutes that I might not do otherwise (or in the case of the dishes, might not do until they are an overwhelming mess that takes over all of my kitchen counters. Ahem.) Strongly approve of this goal/habit.

This is awesome. Maybe a tiny little nap could be an option too. :D

Heavy deadlifts make me insanely nervous, so my heart rate was bananas on those top sets even though we've been occasionally lifting 315# for 3s for months at this point. It's so weird -- I'm not afraid of getting hurt, so I guess I am nervous about the devastation of failure...? Woof, ha. I find deadlifts to be incredibly emotional as lift. No other lift brings me up or tears me down in the same way -- I've never cried on the ground in an empty squat rack after missing a bench press, for example, lmao. But, I'd say floor routines are about the same way in gymnastics.

Yeah. A couple of years ago I was having regular psych outs about the deadlifts. That's because I was going near-max RPE all the time (I didn't know any better), and was also afraid to miss lifts (I had been lifting for one year, then). Y'all pointed out that dropping a deadlift is not a disaster, and I tried it, and things were fine after that. Even with a little more experience and a slightly more sensible deadlift programme, stepping up to bar often felt like an epic challenge. That's why I loved them. I've not yet cried over a deadlift, though. Something to look forward to when the gyms open again 😁

REP PR Yassssss. That's awesome and I totally feel the same way, I get so in my head with deadlifts compared to squats or other lifts.

Check out the list of prompts here! I do so hope some of you play along. You have just about two weeks. There is lots of silliness to indulge in.

Did you add a bunch of prompts later?  It seems like the list got a LOT longer than when I first took a look at it.  I am going to try some of these but I guess we'll see just how many...

This is such a good mini-goal.

So interesting about deadlifts being an emotional lift for you. For me climbing used to get really emotional on occasion. It's like a boulder problem became a reflection of my life or something haha.

I only just noticed "The @@mu Factor" in the prompt list and I love it. 😁

I don't think I'm especially hard on myself, but I set-up wrong or psych myself out on deadlifts. I've not been able to just jump up in weight and find I can usually only manage to get lifts like 5-10# higher than my multiple rep pulls off the ground. So I guess it's just my own expectations for myself never being met? Or being frustrated because I know I can do so much more but I just get stuck? I don't know. Even good deadlift days are emotional though (just the other direction), so I think there is something like PHYSICAL happening that is causing the emotional responses, ha.

Day 2.5

I was definitely a bit sore from the deadlifts on Thursday, but squats were okaaaay, I guess.

Squats: 2 x 3 x 265#, 3 x 3 x 245#, 5 x225#

Stiff legged RDLS: 4 x 15 x 45# DBs

Single leg glute bridges: 4 x 25 per side

Dips: 4 x 10

Is, Ys, Ws, and Ts: 4 x 5 x 5#

Ab stuff x some

QP got us nice takeout dinner and gave me presents for my early birthday, including multiple pints of banana pudding from Magnolia Bakery and nice mezcal. 😱😍

Day 2.6

Saturday I went to gymnastics practice again! Wooo. I spent a while trying to get my front tumbling smoothed out again, working on uneven bar basics and toe-ons, doing some quick jumps and leaps on balance beam, and that was kind of it. My friend and I worked stalder negatives at the end of practice after some dedicated hip mobility and compression work. I managed to clear my feet a couple of times, at the very least. I am not sure how I managed to spend a full 3 hours there and do so little. I think there was a lot of sitting involved. 😅

Day 2.7

Bench: 5 x 3 x 155#, 2 x 2 x 165#, 3 x 160#

CGBP: 4 x 8 x 125#

BSS: 4 x 10 x 50#

Glute ham raises: 4 x 8

Lat pull-downs: 4 x 15 x 70#

I spent a while on ankle PT after this lifting workout. I went home, played a bit of Hades, took a nap, felt kind of off, napped more, and then was up late talking with a friend of mine and playing more Hades.  Weird 3-day weekend Sunday vibes in play.

Mobility work: 4/

Physical therapy: 6/6 shoulder, 2/2 ankles

Yoga OR handstand workout: 3/2

Gymnastics : 2/3

Lunch break: 2/2

Strong on the challenge this week! 💪

I'm off today for MLK and tomorrow is my birthday, so I am going to make myself a cake, of course. I have been feeling a bit low this weekend -- I think it includes some birthday-related feelings. I normally LOVE birthdays but the ongoing pandemic puts a damper on... just about any of the ways I like to celebrate things, in addition the overall mix of badness going on right now (dark winter days, insurrection, air of anxiety around the inauguration, new heights to the pandemic in the US, inability to see and spend time with many of my loved ones). I have not been feeling my sparkliest self of late.

Though, cake will probably help. 🎂

Anyway, the Exscavaganza continues all week, which has been a great source of silliness and joy, at the very least. You can watch some of the submissions here:

It is... hard. I forgot that gymnastics feels like all of the forces of the earth trying to PULL YOUR BODY APART -- especially uneven bars, oof.  My ankles/knees/hips are not used to the impact as much anymore, so I can't tumble as much as I would normally like to. Plus, my explosiveness seems to be pretty... low. I've been having difficulty generating the power I know I can. I assume it's all technique work and maybe some t2 fibers I need to redevelop. 🤷‍♀️

We do have access to a foam pit at one of our away gyms, which my home gym never had! I have yet to take much advantage of it, but I look forward to being able to safely work on twisting and maybe toe-front dismounts off of uneven bars again? 🤩

Happy Birthday! What kind of cake will it be? Cake flavour is a very important component and should be taken seriously.

Oh goodness, I am very proud of my cake.

I did a toasted pistachio dacquoise with orange-cardamom french butter cream, two thin layers of salted chocolate ganache, and a fresh raspberry layer. With more fresh raspberries on top. It's... very good! I had my first piece today. It's very rich (I mean... there are a lot of nuts, eggs, and butter going on here, so no surprise.) but the tart raspberry and bitter chocolate cut through it and add quite a lot. I did watch a lot of GBBO this month, so I thank them for the inspiration, haha. I had never made french butter cream before (it's kind of tricky!) and the last time I did a cake with meringue layers, they broke while building. This time I fared much better. I'm super pleased with how it turned out. 😊

Day 3.2

My birthday was fine. I should have made real plans, but my only plans involved making and eating spanakopita. 🤷‍♀️ In the hub-bub about the scavenger hunt, I forgot about the fact that there would be an actual birth-DAY involved, ha. I was remiss to overlook that.  But there were nice gestures abound, Mister California sent me flowers and donuts, my roommates got me pastries, QP sent me a cameo video from a GGBO baker he got for me (lol awww), and my friend dropped a bunch of desserts he made with his gf. I pretty much only ate pastry all day, haha. 🍽️ The cake tastes great.

I played cards and watched a movie with my roommates after making my massive spanakopita. And then didn't even stay up until midnight. LAMEEE. 😝

Day 3.3

Ok work day. We have a two-day conference this week so I've been trying to get other things done while listening in but am having mixed results with that. As it goes.

Bench: 5 x 3 x 155#, 2 x 3 x 160#, 2 x 2 x 165#

Squats: 5 x 3 x 255# <-- lowered volume due to blood donation this week

Front squats: 2 x 3 x 165#, 5 x 2 x 175#

Half kneeling db press: 4 x 8 x 30#

Curls: 3 x 8 x 20#

Toes-to-bar: 4 x 8 medley

Someone give me a couple of cues for my chicken wing left arm in my crooked squats that I think helped a little. I have a lot of trouble engaging my lats at the same time as I brace ribs to hips, so when I focus on one, the other tends to slip... which is probably partly where my crooked positioning is coming from! Also my left shoulder/lower trap is the problem one, so it has trouble locking in compared to the right. More to work on, as always. 😜

I was up late on a video call but slept pretty well when I did sleep.

Mobility work: 4/6

Physical therapy: 7/9 shoulder, 2/3 ankles

Yoga OR handstand workout: 3/4

Gymnastics : 2/3

Lunch break: 4/6 <-- succeeding at lunch so far! Ha.

Hahah, there is no pressure to play at all! But I think you (and maybe Ghostlet!) would still enjoy a few of them if you wind up having time and still want to participate. You have until the end of my Sunday -- and another friend told me they are just getting started today, so you'd be in great company. :)
