Week Zero Update!

Even though I was late to post (we've had intermittent internet, so having to put as much internet to work as possible), I was working on my goals.

Last week I wanted a total of 19.7 miles, split out into 2 walks a day like so:

Monday: 2.22

Tuesday: 3.18

Wednesday: 1.96

Thursday: 2.21

Friday: 2.61

Saturday: 3.7

Sunday: 3.79

This weekend has been a bit warmer, at right around 0, so taking advantage of that where I can and enjoying being outside!

Training was Muay Thai Monday, Wednesday, Sunday, and Strength on Tuesday and Friday.

Food overall - we got takeout one night, which is a rare event, and then made a new year's eve feast that was amazing, AND only had one item that was off

Other than that, really just prepping for this upcoming week!

Let's do this :D

90% compliance to mostly Auto Immune Paleo protocol
Great. Went off plan 2 meals, for the holiday.

At least 1 Breathing exercise / day
This is one of the ones that I've gotten OUT of the habit - so will focus on this next week.

Sleep Hygeine
No phone within 30 minutes of bed, Stick to bedtime
Did great on this except for New Year's Eve, which was a planned exception.

This is feeling great. The system I worked out last challenge has been working really well, and every week I make a few tweaks to it that really improve it!
Ratatoskr

Did this about 50% of the time last week, but hadn't set it as an official goal yet.
Holmgard
Prioritizing Family and Connections
Spend time with partner and animal companions each day.
Success, but due to intermittent internet have had to spend more time working on that / work taking way longer than it should (we're talking 2 hours to upload a 1 minute video 😳 ) than I'd like, which has eaten into family time.  This will be fixed this week!
Janet
Prioritizing myself
Spend time purely focusing on myself at least 2x per week.
This is a new goal!
Miss Fusspots

Use coping mechanisms whenever needed.

Alright, loooong overdue for an update but things have just been hard, and then I had a lot of guilt for not updating.

Last week's news stress hit me HARD, along with figuring out some life stuff (and deciding to stay in Canada an extra month), and (I think stress related), I woke up Sunday with the lower left half of my face and tongue as it was inflating at around 4am, which is always fun. Thankfully this is just something my body does, so while it's annoying, it wasn't alarming, (though, a little embarrassing to look like someone who got a very poorly done lip injection / plastic surgery 😂 ) and I was able to get back to sleep and slept most of the morning Sunday while waiting for my face to go back to normal, though it took a full few days to get back.

So while last week was frustrating, it also proved how necessary it is for me to focus on the basics, and keeping stress down.

I started stretching/rehab movements on Sunday, and we even got some plates that will help me with my rehab movements (5lb and 10lb, which is fantastic because before the lightest weight we had was 35 :) ). Strength training didn't happen Monday or Tuesday but got back at it today, even though it sucked. Here's what I did:

So, rating green for things that went well, blue for things that were okay, red for things that didn't go great.

Daily Movement, Getting Outside, Getting Sunshine, Getting Fresh Air
Walk 2x Per Day
I walked 20.2 miles last week, with 2 walks every single day except for Sunday, where I was really struggling from my entire body hurting.
Floki
Lifelong injury rehab work, to keep me out of pain
Daily stretching / rehab movements
Has happened every day since Sunday, but not before that.
Magni
Strength Training, to help with lifelong independence
Strength Train 3x per week
I missed every day last week, but got back at it today, even if it was something short and my body feels off from the inflammation.
Platypus
Hydration
A gallon of water per day
This is getting easier and easier. Not feeling well helps because it's a constant reminder!
Pandowdy
Stick to nutritional guidelines to keep body happy and auto immune in check
90% compliance to mostly Auto Immune Paleo protocol
Success.
Penguin Man (Master P)
Breathing Exercises for mental health
At least 1 Breathing exercise / day
Yes.
Moon Rabbit
Sleep Hygeine
No phone within 30 minutes of bed, Stick to bedtime
Phone I've been needing to remind myself constantly for no bed, but it's getting better.
Minerva
Schedule Planning
Plan next day night before, loosely plan week on Sunday
Yes.
Ratatoskr
Managing my ADHD
Work from desk with headphones on 75% of the time
Meh. I'm doing okay here but still prefer to work from the Couch where I get to spend time with my human.
Holmgard
Prioritizing Family and Connections
Spend time with partner and animal companions each day.
This has kind of been combined with walking, though my walks are my favorite times of the day because I get to be with them and there are no screens or distractions.
Janet
Prioritizing myself
Spend time purely focusing on myself at least 2x per week.
I am bad at this.
Miss Fusspots
Anxiety / PTSD #1
Use coping mechanisms whenever needed.
Things haven't been easy, but using the mechanisms, even if they don't work completely, I'm using them.
Mordred
Anxiety / PTSD #2
Check the lock, remind myself I'm strong enough

And I will leave you all with a few pictures from my walk the other day, because Canada is beautiful  🇨🇦

That's one of the barriers to getting back at it is guilt about not posting. I have definitely procrastinated in the past by commenting on everyone else's challenges before posting on mine. But I am glad that you are back and hope that this week is better than the previous.

So pretty, but very cold looking! The nice thing about snowy climates though is you get more sunshine. Do you know what makes you face swell? Is it an allergy?

Yeah! Lots of sunshine especially on those super white days is just GORGEOUS :)

The only thing that we've linked the swelling to is stress. It's been an on and off thing for years now - and I've been to a ton of specialists, allergists, etc., done full elimination diets, allergy tests, didn't wear any makeup or lotion and used only specific prescription soaps for a few months - the works, and I'm officially allergic to.... nothing (well, nothing that could be causing the swelling in the ways it's doing it). It also happens to my feet and hands, always in the middle of the night, and sometimes it's one or sometimes it's all of them - you never know!  It's like this every time I feel a little swelling coming on:

gene wilder suspense GIF

😂 😂 😂

My last doctor ruled out a few things that could be causing it other than allergy and it's none of those, thankfully, and thinks it's related to stress and my auto-immune - and had recommended I see an immunologist - but that was right before the world shut down and I moved across the country and then into another country so here we are just as confused as ever :). My plan is to see one when I'm back in the states, just working on getting all of that set up now!

Thanks!

For that, I totally understand where you're coming from with the shift of language - I do think language is extremely important - and love talk around it - so this is actually a really interesting conversation.

In this case I'm not calling myself bad. I'm not great at that goal, and that's just a logical fact, just like I'm also bad at putting shoes on horses (well, assuming I would be, because I've never done it).

For me, too many language shifts to the positive end up having the opposite effect (same with affirmations - they've never resonated with me and have always done more damage than help - I rebel against them).  I'm still only really in the contemplation stage of change with it, and accepting that it's something I'm bad at helps me accept that it's something I have to actually put work into changing.

Hello there! Just stopping in to say that I will be following along.

Your challenge regarding ADHD is of particular interest. I want to thank you for sharing it. I am not officially diagnosed with it or anything similar, but I am beginning to seek help and figure out if I have ADHD or whats going on. But seeing people being so open about that part of their life is super inspiring. So I just want to thank you... again.

Thanks! ADHD is an interesting one - I wasn't officially diagnosed until I was in my 30's, and it was a long road to get there, and I kept being told that a lot of my adhd symptoms were also symptoms of my auto immune (hashimotos), so my thyroid levels were likely off - when in reality,  I just needed to focus on my ADHD :)

I think there are levels of ADHD, and regardless of if we're officially diagnosed or not, figuring out systems that help us cope with however it is our brains work is the most important thing - and not feeling guilty that our brains work a little differently, or feeling bad about ourselves. It's a really common thing in ADHD land to feel like we just need to "get our shit together", but in reality, we just need different systems to help focus our superpower. Our shit is together, just in a different way than one set of standards in society tell us it should be :)

I’ve been in the summer and winter. It gets hot and humid in the summer too. I've never seen a superhero movie that just consisted of a superhero being super the whole time.

There is always a antagonist, a struggle, a quest, an artifact, something.  They are always tested, occasionally (or often) fail, regroup, and conquer the day... usually.  Sometimes the plot is a little bit darker and all they can do is dust themselves off to start the battle all over again.

ha - I'm such a coffee snob, I haven't made it to Timmy's yet.  I've been pouting about not having my grinder with me up here in Canada and how I'm going to make it through without it till I go back home to MI to get it 😂  I feel like I need to try Timmy's at least once before I head out, though. Or when I get back :)

Haven't spent any time in Toronto - mostly Montreal (when I was younger, as it was 4 hours away and you could drink at 18 instead of 21, hah), and now we're in Manitoba - where, I've learned what a good, solid winter is hah!  It looks like the average summer temperature where I'm at is in the upper 70's, which will feel like winter did down in Texas 🤣

Formal dress/tuxes in that kind of heat must not have been fun at allllll.

DEFINITELY want to check out the glacial lakes!

Really it's anything that is purely for ME and not for anyone else. Playing video games, reading, making music, taking a bath could all work. Sometimes, it could even be going for a walk - even though that's a part of another goal (totally fine if things overlap). This one feels a bit harder because I'm not living in my apartment right now, so not only do I not have my own things, but I'm still staying in someone else's house (even if I have my own space here, I've been here a few months - it's just different, but making it work!).

All of these are true, and the ups aren't as good without the downs - if things were great all the time, they wouldn't feel as great. Struggle is always a part of the process, but it always feels better to come back with an update that's got a positive uptick instead of juuuust talking about the struggle, haha.

Daily Movement, Getting Outside, Getting Sunshine, Getting Fresh Air
Walk 2x Per Day
Last week's total milage was about 5 miles lower than the previous week - but I still walked 2x a day every day except for Sunday, and Saturday (where we chose to go to the dog park instead). The ground has been solid ice lately, so every walk takes much more effort (physically), so the lower milage doesn't necessarily mean less time or effort.
Floki
Lifelong injury rehab work, to keep me out of pain
Daily stretching / rehab movements

Magni
Strength Training, to help with lifelong independence
Strength Train 3x per week
2 out of 3, which is an improvement from 0/3. And did this fun workout Friday when I really wasn't feeling it :)
Platypus

This is going fine.

Breathing Exercises for mental health
At least 1 Breathing exercise / day
Yes, and it's getting easier to think "I need to do my breathing exercises" when I'm stressed.
Moon Rabbit
Sleep Hygeine
No phone within 30 minutes of bed, Stick to bedtime
Phone I've been needing to remind myself constantly for no bed, but it's getting better.
Minerva

Yes.
Ratatoskr
Managing my ADHD
Work from desk with headphones on 75% of the time
Still prefer to work where I can be near my human, but getting better. Since he's working a bit more again, it's forced more time at my desk anyway, so that "helps".
Holmgard
Prioritizing Family and Connections
Spend time with partner and animal companions each day.
Yes.
Janet
Prioritizing myself
Spend time purely focusing on myself at least 2x per week.
Blue because I played video games one night when my initial thought was that I could do extra work when I had some time to myself, and I decided to relax instead (my work for the day was done, that's just my initial thought)
