Form check - bridges

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I've been working on my bridges recently, and decided to film them to check on my form. I'm not liking what I'm seeing, so I was wondering if anyone could check out the video and give me any tips? I recorded two videos, and the first is definitely the worst as I managed to improve the arch slightly after watching it. I still feel in the second video though that I'm too far over my feet and my legs are too bent, so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel.

Try really digging into the mat with your toes and making sure they are really solid before you lift off, then push away from your toes, that might help your knees stay over your ankles.

My suggestion is simply to keep going and be patient. It's a great start and you should like what you're seeing!  🙂  More importantly, how does it feel?

To get your body further over your hands and straighten the legs you need to actively think about pushing your heels into the ground, and crotch to sky. The low butt should be working really hard here. Eventually, as your hips and shoulders get more open, you'll have more freedom in the shape of bridge. But you're doing really awesome, just give it time. Also, there really isn't a "wrong" shape, unless it causes pain. Bridges have many variations.

Awesome, thank you, that's encouraging :)

It feels tough, but fine. A few weeks ago I was getting a bit of pain in my lower back, which lead me down the rabbit hole of trying to find out what 'correct' form would be and adjusting my weight towards my hands/trying to get a more even arch.

Thanks for the tips, I'll take them on board and keep practicing!

One cue that helps me a lot is to tuck your tailbone. It might seem a little counter intuitive, but it makes sure that you're using the hips to create an arch as well as the lower back, and that you're using the right muscles to support it.

Ok, thanks. I'm going to have to try that one to get my head round it I think. I'll give it a go.
