Tank summoned the Rangers on facebook to participate in the new challenge, so here I am!

I posted in my previous unsuccessful challenge that I wanted to pick ONE of these little baby goals to do for a challenge:

  • Daily mini walk
  • Daily movement break during the workday (any movement),
    • or doing the darebee daily dare challenge
    • or a slight variation, a daily "step outside and sit for even just a minute"
  • Daily work on studying Japanese even if it's just a minute or two (I pretty much entirely stopped studying when covid hit and I couldn't go to classes anymore)
  • Daily toe touch stretch

My "do one pullup attempt a day" mini goal has been enormously successful, so despite my urge to do all of these, I'm sticking to one.

The pullup goal has been successful because there's a clear trigger - when I take my dog outside to pee, I attempt a pullup on the bar outside. None of these have an obvious trigger, so I think figuring one out will be the key to success for any of them.

I'll choose walking since my very first NF challenge back in the day was walking. The goal is to walk any amount, even if it's 5 minutes. It helps that sunset is starting to get later so I have time to actually walk after work some days!

I don't have an idea for a trigger yet and I don't want to overcomplicate it, so I'm just going say this is my goal for now:

Walk every day for any amount of time

I was thinking about you yesterday because I saw an ad for a Virginia Adventure Race and I thought we could have so much fun.

If your goal is to walk 5 minutes a day can you mix it in with your current pull-up success? Maybe make taking the dog out in the afternoon into a walk?

Love the simplicity. Maybe  a set time each day? Right before or after breakfast or lunch? Or after you brush your teeth in the morning?

My weekday schedule has some moving parts so a specific time is challenging. Morning is my best bet, and I do already walk sometimes in the morning, or take some coffee around the corner to a spot with a view. I chose this goal with the hope of both getting more consistent and gradually getting my mileage back up to maybe a couple miles/day.

So I'm working on something along the lines of:

  • If I'm not working out in the morning, go on a walk
  • If I'm working ou,t try to at least do a short walk after work
  • If I go to my coffee spot in the morning, go on an additional walk later in the day (even though it technically counts for this goal)
  • If my dog sleeps in (and therefore so do I), get in a short walk after work
  • If I have to start work early and don't have time for a walk in the AM, get in a shorter walk after work

This plan probably works, but it's not as clear of a trigger + action as I'd like!

Now that the sun's staying up later I actually can get a walk in after work, which wasn't the case even a month ago. (Not that I can't actually go on a walk at night, but I always feel an aversion to that even though my neighborhood is super safe.)

Are races happening again??

Lol you know me, my real goal is to walk a couple of miles, but the minimum is at least 5 minutes on days when I don't do any other walking.

Unfortunately we don't walk him because he's 16 and has seizures when he exerts himself (+a bad leg) or else that would work really well.

Our neighborhood is safe, I bought reflectors to wear, but I still never manage to talk myself into going on walks after dark. It's still dark pretty early here, but by challenge end  hopefully it will be light a little later

Week 0 Update

Though it seems the challenge hasn't actually started yet, I'm happy to report that my first week was a success! I walked every day. The general plan I outlined works - walk in the morning when there's time, but if there's not get at least a short walk in after work.

I got an unsolicited popup on my phone saying I hit the American Heart Association recommendation for activity based on my walking, so that was also neat! (I work out consistently already but my phone doesn't know that.)

I will say that some of my momentum just comes from knowing (and actually remembering) that this challenge exists. So while it's all good and I passed this week with flying colors, I do still wonder how to build walking into a daily habit vs. a challenge goal. You could argue that "walk after letting the dog out in the morning" and "walk after you finish work for the day" ARE actually habit triggers.

Walking USED to be a daily habit for me, but I stopped doing it consistently when my shin splints/calf burning issue got bad. After ~10 minutes of walking my calves would just burn so it was super frustrating.

I recently bought some more padded and less minimalist shoes. They're comfy and actually let me walk without hurting my calves, but they immediately gave me heel blisters. So I bought these stick-on heel pads and put those in, which has helped a lot! But they do still rub my pinky toes and are leaving red marks on them. I have a really hard time with shoes! These at least let me walk, but I would ideally like to find a pair that doesn't come with so many trade offs.

Anyway. Part of my ability/motivation to walk consistently again comes from actually having shoes I can walk in. So maybe the combination of just being able to walk comfortably + the 2 possible times I can walk will be enough to make it a habit? We'll see.

If that works, I'm thinking that walking can then be used as a trigger for other habits pretty easily! For example, "after I get home from a walk, I'll do a forward fold for 2 minutes."

I'm rereading old challenges for motivation, which is always an interesting experience. My early challenges were all very reasonable before I became Captain RangerBrain!

But they also did follow the classic 3-goal structure. I think my super small specific challenge is good here, but I can't help being tempted to make it a 3 goal challenge...

Hey NTB, good to see you!

If you're worried about lack of exercise triggers, is it worth taking a few minutes on day per week (maybe a Sunday) to set phone reminders for all of your walks. Hopefully you'll know your schedule for the week by that point, so you can make sure walks are in places that fit.

Granted you might still need a weekly trigger to remind you to set the alarms, but that might be easier as it's at the same time each week?

Alarms would be good if I were having trouble remembering, but that's not the issue so much as wanting it to be a habit again instead of a goal I have to really focus on (via things like alarms or challenges). Maybe this challenge + having shoes that are working with my leg issues will be enough on its own to make it a habit again once I remember that I do really like walking when it doesn't hurt.

Unrelated, I'm super impressed with your muscle up skills that I've seen over on Instagram! I think I remember back when you were working towards pullups? You've gotten so strong!

I've had an interesting urge to run lately. Sometimes it strikes when I'm on a walk and other times it strikes even when I'm at home. I like running and I've missed it, but I've had so many false starts with it because of the shin splints that I stopped doing it.

In early 2020 I was in PT and actually making progress and starting to run again, but after everything that happened with my mom and coming out here to CA I've lost that progress.

I've been toying with the idea of attempting a little running again. Maybe my increased walking + comfortable shoes are helping my legs actually recover? I'm cautiously hopeful, but I've been burned before.

Today I was walking on a nearby fire road, a good song came on, and I felt that urge again, so I ran for a short stretch. It was like a minute of running, but it felt good to do on a beautiful day! 1 minute of running doesn't mean much, of course - I often have days that feel better than others. But it does make me start to fantasize about doing a little more walk/running and building up towards some short runs.

Oh thank you! Yeah, it's taken a while to get there, but I've definitely come a long way on pulling strength over the last 4-5 years.

I 100% support the idea of you doing more running. Obviously build up slowly and pull back if it starts to hurt, but it would be so cool if you could run again!

What shoes are you wearing?

I bought a random pair of reebok walking/trail shoes that were on sale to try.

I love reebok nanos for crossfit, and was walking in those for a while, but they don't quite do it. Before that I had a pair of Altas that was incredibly comfortable but still didn't do it for walking. Before that a pair of Asics that worked better for walking but had the same tight toe box issue.

It sounds like your current shoes might have a more narrow toe box than you need.

Oh yeah, that's definitely the problem. I think my feet also do turn kind of weird because they're so flat and make me more predisposed to this kind of issue.

I've been trying to wear comfier shoes with a wider toe box, but every one of those shoes seems to fail as a walking shoe. Like within 10 minutes of starting a walk my calves will just be burning.

I'm like goldilocks! I need to find the shoe that's just right.

I don't know if this is at all relevant to you but my calves have always been the first things to give up on me, so I asked the PT about it and why they start burning and whatever and he said since my ankles are jacked the calves get fatigued faster because they're overcompensating. Idk if you have ankle issues but just throwing it out there.

I probably do! Growing up my ankles would hurt a lot. That never happens anymore, but my feet seem to be the root of all evil in my lower legs, so I'm sure my ankles are included in there.

When I was doing PT they had me doing a lot of weird one-leg exercises like standing on a wobbly mat while throwing a ball at a trampoline. That one's hard to recreate at home, but I definitely should be doing more stuff like that to strengthen the whole system.

In other news, I bought a bike! I'd been riding my bike a lot in VA and I've been missing having one here for a long time now. I felt it was silly to buy a second bike to have here when I'll eventually be reunited with my other one, so I didn't act on it. Plus bikes were sold out everywhere anyway.

But I kept on missing having one, and I was just talking about being antsy for cardio.

I've been doing a lot of journaling and "what do I do with my life now?" processing lately (life imploded in 2020) and I don't have any answers to that, but one thing that is clear is that when I feel like I'm living my best life I'm either doing something outdoors or doing physical activities. And if you look at it through that lens, buying a bike is a very reasonable thing to do as long as I actually use it.

Then I got a bonus at work! My old job didn't have such things. So I went and bought a bike today.

Walking continues. Today I ran into my sister's boyfriend who was out walking their dog. He's a very cute dog and he saw me and ran to say hi! It was delightful.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CLIBldyJNDS/

Yesterday I did 100# push jerks for the first time!! 100 club baby! One of my goals for the year is to do a 100# strict press and I feel like I'm really close to that.

I ALSO did 3 PULLUPS IN A ROW. I only regained the ability to do pullups in January, and I'd never done more than 1 before that.

I've lost sight of all my dreams for the future but at least I have PRs.

Also I did my taxes! Fun fact about me: I love to do taxes.

Week 1 Update

FOUR PULLUPS!!!!!!!!

anthony johnson ufc GIF I DID IT I DID IT I DID IT

I've had the goal of being able to do 5 in a row for years, but I got stuck in a loop of being able to do one and then losing the ability again. Since I started doing daily pullup attempts, I've skyrocketed from 0, to getting 1 back, to 2 for the first time ever, and beyond!!

Why 5? I read somewhere that 5 was a good benchmark for women and that was good enough for me. 🤷‍♀️ I'M SO CLOSE

I'm like...this is the kind of long standing goal I should celebrate when I achieve it! But how?? I've been brainstorming ideas but all I've got so far is...buy more leggings?? (I have a problem)

I also got to ride my bike this weekend! The one non-mountain biking trail I know of in the area is about 10K, so I went and rode both Saturday and Sunday. So fun! So saddle sore! This bike is less cushy than my old one.

So far I've walked every day....except today I just realized?? Whoops.

But it's ok. I rode nearly 7 miles on my bike, worked out, ACHIEVED 4 PULLUPS IN A ROW, and worked on a bunch of home improvement projects today. My parents' house is badly maintained and falling apart, so I did a bunch of little things in the yard:

  • Replaced the hose head so I can actually water the plants that everyone else is content to let die
  • Got a hummingbird feeder and put it up for the nesting hummingbirds in the tree outside
  • Tied back a bush that has been growing into the entryway to the yard
  • Replaced some bulbs in the yard lights and figured out how to turn them on for the first time in probably at least 7 years
  • That's Metal 2

Week 2 Update

Going strong with the walking! 7/7. The temptation to set a mileage goal is real, but I'm trying not to rangerbrain here and keep it simple. I feel like it's become a routine now.

I've ridden my bike 4 times since I bought it, so I feel good about that. I calculated that if I ride it about 16 times, I'll break even with the cost of renting a bike for a day from the local bike shop. Yesterday, I faced my fear of riding my bike on the street and took it to the park at the end of the street (about a 10 minute ride). That's a big deal for me!! Now I'm fantasizing about getting a bike rack and riding there with my lunch to eat sometimes.

I tried a short Ashtanga yoga video this weekend, which I really liked! I'd like to build more regular yoga into my routine but I can't figure out a good time for it between walking and workouts, which are higher priority for me. This has been a struggle for years, but I'd really like to figure it out because I feel way better when I do yoga more often. Maybe a topic for next challenge.

I also finished Frugal February successfully! So now that it's March I immediately ordered several things...which maybe is not the point of having Frugal February in the first place.
