Wild Wolf Posted February 8, 2021 Report Share Posted February 8, 2021 Greetings and Salutations, friends! My name is Ryan and I go under the moniker "Wild Wolf". But, most people just call me Wolfie. I've been Rangering since 2014 on and off, seeing many highs and many lows during that time frame. I've also been apart of Nerd Fitness since 2012! Recently, I was feeling really good about my challenges until about November of last year. I was laid off from my day job which sent me into a spiral of self doubt with a sprinkle of depression. I AM the provider for my large Wolf Pack™ and when I heard the news I was being let go (along with 120 other people) I started to panic. Between a mortgage, bills and everything in between that needed to be paid, I set off to find another job ASAP. Little did I know it would take me over 2 months to do so! I finally landed a job in late January, and my official first week was last week. My mood has drastically changed and I feel like I'm starting to gain some traction. FINALLY! During the time period where I didn't have a day job, I started a book series called: The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. Now, these are EPIC FANTASY style books, with some reaching over 1100 pages long. Yeah.... big ass books. I started listening to them on Audible because the 4th book in the installment, Rhythm of War, was about to release. I consumed books 1 (Way of Kings) and 2 (Words of Radiance) in about 17 days, lol. I couldn't stop listening! I'm nearly finished with book 3 (Oathbringer) and looking forward to hopping on to book 4 right after. To give you a brief summary of what The Stormlight Archive is, please read THIS. I only link the summary of the series because I would end up taking 15 pages to explain it myself, lol. The books are AMAZING! My challenge, however, deals with the Immortal Words that each Knight Radiant must speak, starting with the First Ideal: Life before Death Strength before Weakness Journey before Destination It is within these words that strives a code to live by, A foundation, if you will. There's so much meaning in these words that I think about them almost daily. And, what exactly do they mean to me, you ask??? Life before Death: Living each day to it's fullest. Don't wait for tomorrow to get something done, or forgive someone, or tell someone you love them. Don't let a day go by where you regret NOT doing something. Strength before Weakness: To me, this doesn't really have a lot to do with physical strength. This is choosing to be strong in those moments of weakness. This is choosing to do the hard thing over taking the easy route (which isn't always the right path). This is building up a mental capacity to kick each day in the nuts and never let stress or anxiety or depression to bring you down and make you question your self worth. Journey before Destination: I forget to enjoy the ride of life sometimes. I worry too much about the end results instead of relishing in the journey that gets me there. Smile at the little things. Don't take life so serious because it WILL weigh you down. You have a choice. DON'T. LET. IT. This is what my respawn challenge is about. I speak the Immortal Words and hold fast to the First Ideals each and every day. My Goals: Stay Active Stretch/mobilize DAILY Time Management Feed the Creative Monster™ That's it. No fluff or crazy shenanigans. Just get back to basics and stay engaged on the forums. So, let's drop in and get ready to kick some ass! I'm really excited for you with your new job though! I read the first half of Way of Kings but there was a bit too much political maneuvering for me... And I had a hard time getting attached to the characters with all of the bouncing around. It took me awhile to read. Mr.Incredible is a slower reader than I am, but he started after me, and finished in a couple of weeks, because he couldn't put it down. Glad you found a new job. Granted, I wasn't completely without work because I was still working at Costco in the evenings, but my day job accounted for the majority of my monthly income. The caveat was getting laid off forced us to look at Costco's insurance and it's FARRRRRR superior than the one I had originally. So, that was a good thing lol. Way of Kings is one of the first books I enjoyed with the view point was done through multiple characters. At first, I didn't like it at all. It was a lot to follow, but the narrator's for the books are amazing and really pull you into the story. I can see how the books aren't for everyone, though. It's good to see you btw!! As of right now, it's enjoyable. I've barely cracked the surface of what I'm doing, but it's dealing with stuff I did back at my old job before we got bought out. That was better then what I WAS doing. It's unfortunately a little less money then what I was making but that's ok for now. We're saving tons of money when we switched to Costco insurance. Looking forward to your challenge! Following! I haven't read the Stormlight Archive. The only thing I've ready so far by Brandon Sanderson has been the Final Empire. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the second one. Good to see you as well I'm glad I found a job, too. 2 months was 2 months too long, lol. I was really worried when I didn't get something right away. Final Empire is AMAZING. The whole mistborn idea is sooooooo neat and how they use the various metals to do special things. I've only ever read Final Empire as well and will probably go back and re-read it before moving on to the other installments. I will tell you, that in the books, one of the main characters is a Windrunner and their powers are really friggin awesome! It's the of I don't know if I can pick a favorite. I love Kal and the story of Bridge 4, but Dalinar's story in Oathbringer was amazing. darkfoxx Posted February 9, 2021 Report Share Posted February 9, 2021 I’ve been on a ‘stay up till 2am’ tear with a couple books about French women being sent to the colonies (New France) to shore up France’s claims in Canada. (Duty To The Crown by Aimie K. Runyan) They’re not super historically heavy - or even smutty like my beloved Outlander series, but she’s a great writer. I could do with more historical minutia, but am finding the characters and their movements compelling (despite being more broad strokes character experiences - someone is shunned, someone dies in childbirth, there’s a lot of societal positioning, the law is shitty, there’s racism). I’m debating whether to continue on this historical candy bend, or jump back into a massive fantasy series. I’ve (finally) exhausted the Leviathan Wakes series, and have torn through I believe Hugh Howey’s catalog. Machine Learning: New and Collected Stories being the last I read (fantastic). Before that, finished Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre by Max Brooks. Highly recommend. Whatever I do, staying up nightly until 2am is less than convenient for all 4 of us that share the bed. Those sound cool. I know about Leviathan Wakes, because I’m pretty sure I have the first book tucked away somewhere... (and I’ll be looking for that tomorrow!) Good to see you as well I'm glad I found a job, too. 2 months was 2 months too long, lol. I was really worried when I didn't get something right away. Final Empire is AMAZING. The whole mistborn idea is sooooooo neat and how they use the various metals to do special things. I've only ever read Final Empire as well and will probably go back and re-read it before moving on to the other installments. If you're feeling adventurous, Stormlight is pretty incredible...it's just long as hell! Man, last time I was unemployed, it took me 6 months to find a job. I'm glad you only had to go 2.... My husband has been without work for a year, but luckily we have planned our finances well and as long as we don't spend extravagantly, our savings and my salary have been enough so far. Hopefully he'll find something soon. I LOVE fantasy novels that have a unique idea or magic system. When I started reading about the different metals and how they worked with magic in the Mistborn world, I was hooked! I LOVE it! Have you ready any of Brent Week's books? His Prism series is pretty good and has an interesting magic system as well. Right now I'm reading some books for my book club. It's my book club from when I was in my graduate program and they read all kinds of genres of books. A lot of the books aren't really my type of stories, but I enjoy the conversation and have made some good friends in the club, so I stick with it. I go back and forth between reading those books and then reading books I want. I HAVE been pleasantly surprised at some of the books we read though. Hugh Howey is amazing!!!! I love his Silo series!!!! So good! I've been on a horror kick lately. Been reading a lot of Stephen King in my spare time. Right now I'm listening to Carrie on audible. I'm also reading a crime/thriller novel by Karin Slaughter. I never read the Prism books but I had a cousin who did and told me all about the unique magic system. I was doing heavy squats and I came up wrong on my second set and felt a snag on the left side. I rested all week and in all honesty, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I was lucky! So, I went back to the gym yesterday and still felt a little of the snag, so, I basically backed off of the majority of exercises doing extremely light weight. I can still feel it today, so, I'm gonna take the rest of this week to just stretch it out (while also doing tons of push-ups and pull-ups because it doesn't aggravate my back). I'm supposed to help a friend of mine move Saturday, so, I want to make sure and be rested for that cuz she's paying me a pretty hefty sum to do so. My eating has been solid, though, I could do with more water intake. I know I'm slacking there. I'm doing more job specific training this week, so, things aren't QUITE as boring as last week. It's still hard for me to learn when someone just shows me how to do it instead of me getting to do it myself. (Insert raunchy Mr. Willes comment) All in all, though, things are good say for a sore back. I had a good stretch session yesterday and plan to follow that up today with more mobility. I'm just a hair over 4 hours left of Oathbringer and hoping I'll have that finished in the next day so I can move onto Rhythm of War. Did I mention I'm growing my hair back out? My inspiration was initially Kaladin from The Stormlight Archive, but other's like - are also helping inspire me. I'm 3 months in from my last haircut, which was the day before my 33rd birthday. I figured it would be easier to track that way, lol. I might need to post update pics of my hair as it continues to lusciously fall down in its wavy, golden red locks lol. I'm not looking forward to the "in between" phases where it looks like a hot mess but I've done this before and about a year into growing it out, it looked really good!
