The Jedi Chronicles Ep. 10: Opta Ardua Pennis Astra Sequi

Desire to pursue the stars on wings

Ailyn gently unwrapped the bandage keeping her swollen ankle steady to check it. This morning the swelling seemed to have gone down, and walking on it wasn't anywhere nearly as painful as it had been the past couple days. She still avoided walking on it, but the crutches that she'd received at the medical clinic didn't seem necessary anymore.

She would miss her physical training over the next few days, but Ailyn was determined to take the time to focus on training her mind instead. She had built some good habits, and now it was time to compound those good habits with more good habits. Frowning at the unseasonably nice weather, then her foot, Ailyn sighed. One of her ways of building mental toughness and health was to go outside daily. Unfortunately, right now, she couldn't do very much.

But not only was going outside going to be an important goal, but continuing to stretch, and being creative were her other two primary goals. Obviously she wanted to keep pushing herself to cook meals and drink plenty of water, but those habits were more well engrained.

Rolling her shoulders, Ailyn stood up and limped to her front door. A trip to the end of the drive and back was just what she needed to refresh herself.

Hey guys! So I'm shuffling my naming conventions around and now I'm using star themed quotes. This challenge's quote is opta ardua pennis astra sequi which is Latin for Desire to pursue the stars on wings. But it's more than that, it implies that the stars that you're searching for are hard to get to and that you're going to be struggling for them. For me, the balance I've been seeking is my "stars." It's hard for me to find balance between my mental health issues and circumstances, but this stuff will only grow me further.

Like everyone, my 2020 was very stagnant. So I want to keep growing and going. And figuring out who Jedi is. I've been smothered under a mixture of self expectations, anxiety, depression, and stressful situations and I am tired of not knowing what I like or want. I'm not the same person I was 5 or even 3 years ago - it's time I stopped treating myself like I am.

Here are my goals for this challenge:

Stretch Regularly

For dancing and climbing both, stretching is absolutely vital. And I really want to improve my flexibility in general, I tend to feel better when I'm stretching regularly. My goal will be to stretch 3-5 days each week so that I'm actually doing it enough to improve my flexibility. Even though I can't work out super well, I can keep stretching - especially when I am able to work out again.

Each stretch session is (1) point

Scripture Writing

This is good stress relief for me. I need to find a place to have it so that it's an easy decision to actually work with my journal. I love doing this, and it's just a good tool for me in general. I just never think to do it and should! My goal will be 2-4 times a week.

Each scripture writing session is (1) point

Going Outside
This is a huge mental health goal for me. My husband and I only have one car to share between us, so I can go upwards of a week without leaving the house. Which is really awful for my mental health. I'd like to have the goal to walk too since we're going to be going to Disney World in July and the walking there is... a lot. Very intense. So I'll be walking around outside as I can - but priority is getting outside (particularly with a sprained ankle that I'm still working on getting healed). So my goal is 4-6 days of outside time here.

Each 10+ minute time outside is (1) point

Cooking Regular Meals

This is a good goal for me because it reminds me to cook regularly! I just started using Mealime and I'm pretty obsessed with the app. It helps me put together meal plans and in general plan for my meals. I also have been getting more fresh veggies and produce with it. Goal for this is 2-3 meals each week. I'll also get a point if I do any meal prepping for lunches or breakfasts!

Each meal cooked is (1) point

Each meal prepped is (1) point

Drink Plenty of Water

Now that I'm in the habit of drinking water, I'm going to focus on getting a solid water intake. The goal here is to drink 1-2 bottles of water daily using my climbing bottle - which is 32 oz of water. I've been doing fairly well with it so far, it'll be interesting to see how that goes moving forward.

Each 32oz bottle of water is (1) point

Points Allocation

Good - 90 points (AVG 3 stretch sessions a week, 2 scripture writing days, 4 days outside, 2 meals a week cooked, 1 bottle of water a day)

Better- 125 points (AVG 4 stretch sessions a week, 3 scripture writing days, 5 days outside, 2 meals a week cooked, 1 meal a week prepped, 1 -2 bottles of water a day)

Best- 140 points (AVG 5 stretch sessions a week, 4 scripture writing days, 6 days outside, 2-3 meals a week cooked, 1-2 bottles of water a day)

Well, that's my challenge for this go round. Happy challenge everyone, and May the Force Be With You!

Whelp >_> I'm definitely not healing as quickly as I'd like to, but that may have something to do with the fact that I'm twelve kinds of idiot and decided that climbing up onto a chair with a sprained ankle so I could fetch some olive oil was a good idea.

Yeah no.

Then I took a shower with my ankle unwrapped and while that was an absolutely vital experience I definitely think it was a little rough on my ankle.

So I'm stiff and more swollen today than yesterday. But I rescheduled a couple of tasks for tomorrow and the only movement I'm doing is up and down the stairs for meals and to and from the bathroom. And my final movement to the couch this evening after I eat dinner to read the rest of the evening.

I definitely won't be working out this week, and maybe not next week either. I am really not good at being injured

Yeah, I'm going to get my husband to bring me some when he wakes up. I don't want to move more than I have to right now... I also found out that I probably should use the crutches for another couple of weeks at least. I thought they were just until I could technically walk but nope... which is probably why it hasn't been healing.

I may have to rethink my food goal. I can't really cook but so well with not being able to be on my feet, and I'm starting to fall back into some bad binging habits thanks to being injured, frustrated, and otherwise not in a great headspace. I hate the loss of my independence, and it really messes with my head to be basically trapped in my house. The only places I was going were workout related and now I can't climb or dance or work out at all really. I can't even drive because it's my pedal foot.

I need to figure out ways to cut the binging again. Or at least minimize it a little. Because this is really no bueno. It makes me even more frustrated with myself.

Day one was fairly okay. Cooking was a no, because we went to help my sister with a car issue and also my ankle. I did get some water in me yesterday and we not only went out to help my sister, we went to church. That getting out was really nice :)

The weather is gross today and it's cold, but I don't think the sun will set until after I get done with work so I'll try to go outside and check the mail, and probably just enjoy the fresh air and the hidden sunshine.

I need to start stretching again, at least my upper body and upper legs.  I think tonight I'll try to prep part of a meal in advance so that tomorrow I can cook without it being too much of an issue. And clean the kitchen if my ankle will work with me. It was doing super well this morning but I think I was a little bit lax with my crutches. But the swelling has gone down a lot and by the end of the week I should be out of my Ace Bandage and in a traditional brace for a bit. By this weekend I should be able to do useful things like changing the sheets and even showering. I've been taking baths and sponge baths to manage since I can't stand on my ankle.

Today is going to be busy but luckily after an hour or so this morning my email calmed down quite a bit so I'll be able to get things together and ready for the week.

I'm a lil sad because Mr. Right is going climbing tonight and I can't 😕 I miss it a lot already. But I want to make sure we get good use out of our membership. And maybe I can find upper body exercises that I can do sitting for a while!

It's been a rough few days. Our internet has been misbehaving quite a bit, and that's left me to be out and about yesterday and today... on crutches. Since I can't drive yet, my husband has been dropping me off places. Today I'm facing sitting in a coffeeshop for around 11 hours which is... a lot. I'll probably spend some time working on my new novel once I finish work, and I do have a book with me. Somehow I have to convince myself to make dinner tonight as well because I've eaten far too much food out.

We're looking at YET ANOTHER ice storm situation,  which I'm not happy about. I may or may not be useful for work tomorrow depending on if our ISP can get their crap together. I prefer spending cold days wrapped in a blanket on the couch with a warm drink tbh.

I'm going to try to be as functional as possible but I'm honestly exhausted and not feeling my life today.

Hi hi!

I'm sorry to hear about your ankle 😕  ankle sprains suckkk. I'm glad the swelling is getting better though. Hang in there bb! 💜

Happens to the best of us haha I finally graduated from ace bandage to a high support brace! That ace bandage badly needs to be washed, plus it gets out of place fairly frequently. This brace, on the other hand, does not. It feels super supportive, but not like it's going to make it hard to wear shoes (like the ace bandage and the swelling did... I was wearing a slipper on that foot for a few days)

The cup of warm caf had hit the spot. With the way the week had gone, between work related stressors, still dealing with the after effects of a badly sprained ankle, having to leave home quite a few times and limp around, it had not been a great week. But she'd persevered and gotten through it. For the most part, everything had barely rattled her inner balance. Not enough to displace her connection to the Force anyway. Her emotions had come and gone as they do - but she was more stable than she expected. After all these months, she was functional. Slightly lonely, but functional. She could stand normal (or really, above normal) levels of stress.

Things weren't easy, but she felt better equipped to handle them.

It's been a messy couple of weeks. My ankle is healing so much more slowly than I'd expected, work has been a mild nightmare, Mr. Right got a cold, the internet has been ridiculous, my best friend is going through a lot... It has not been ideal. But all I can do is keep on pushing. I've been trying to cope healthily, though my eating habits are about as bad as the quality of what I'm eating. It's frustrating. But I'm not magical, I can't just... wish things easier. It will take time and patience.

Week one is... acceptable. Considering all the crap I've dealt with this week, I'll take it. Could be better, but it also could be worse. All I can do is keep going and do better this week.

I'm tracking all this in my planner and the places where I need to do better here are 1) cooking/prepping meals and 2) stretching. Also getting outside, but I'm giving myself a bit more grace there since I can't walk very well right now still. I'm definitely a lot better though.

Unfortunately, Mr. Right is sick. We think it's just a cold, and based on how he's handling life I think that's the case. But he's resting and I'm keeping him in tea. I may try driving today so that I can go get him some more dayquil and some orange juice. For the most part, my ankle seems to be behaving. I don't really need more than one crutch, and if I'm careful I should at least be able to go  do that. I may do some full on grocery shopping tbh, I think it would be super helpful. Though if I'm going to go, I should definitely go soon.

It'll be good to get out of the house today so I definitely want to try to drive

Accurate!

He seems to be feeling a little bit better already, which is a relief. He never stopped working during everything and while I don't think it's super likely that he'd get the virus at this point, I was concerned because I'm between insurance and have asthma 😅

Yesterday was extremely productive and nice, but today is rainy and gross. I know myself well enough to know that it's going to be hard today. But I actually ate some semblance of breakfast this morning, which will hopefully make the day easier. And I'm at my desk instead of on the couch, which will hopefully help me be a bit more productive. Fingers crossed!

Y'all... it's been a day.  My brain is mush. Details in the spoiler

Spoiler

So for starters,  I overdid it on my ankle yesterday and that aches. Sleeping it off didn't work like I'd hoped, and it's being rude today.  I won't be doing much standing today, or really much going anywhere or doing things. Though I may force it to go get a book I've been trying to get my hands on for over a week.

Work is also stressful, there are five million things happening and I feel like everything is slipping through my fingers. I basically ran the company for a week while my boss was incapacitated and I really am not built for that. It's so far above my pay grade it's not even funny. I'm trying to have grace on myself but I feel like a failure.

And then personal stuff. I have some lingering trauma hiding in my brain because of some marital issues back in early 2019.  My brain chose to associate his depression spiral and the music he was listening to with his feelings about me. So my anxiety/trauma brain screams in panic about him bailing whenever he starts struggling. And he's struggling now, because we're less than a month away from some drama... which I think it's safe to disclose now.

The short version is that he is being wrongly accused of assault and battery by his former employers (he worked in corrections). They had him on paid leave for 6 months, then put him on unpaid leave with no notice, and then terminated him formally 2 months after that. He was interrogated (they said some really awful things in his interrogation) and the court decided to formally charge him in January of 2020.  Between them dragging things out, and covid, we've been in limbo just waiting for the case to be done.

So apparently part of my problem is that I'm catching my husband's cold >_> I'm extra snotty and gross today. Gonna dump coffee #2 and make tea instead after lunch, take off a little early, and vanish into my new book all evening. Probably while working my way through the surprisingly delicious cheap wine I bought yesterday

Jeeze I don't have a cold anywhere near as bad as my husband did but the fatigue is getting me. I'm exhausted and have been since I woke up... and I slept well. I'm definitely going to be rationing my spoons to the best of my ability

It's possible that the fatigue is worse than usual, because the injury on your ankle takes a lot of energy to heal. Eat, drink, sleep, repeat!! Did you spend quality time with that delicious wine? 😁🍾

That's fair! I was resting a ton up until this week, and it's at like 80% now. But it still needs to heal, and if I'm fighting off a cold my body is like... what are you doing???

Thankfully, I ended up texting my boss this morning to get a sleeping in sort of morning. He told me to feel better and get some rest and I do feel quite a bit better :) Still sniffly but that extra sleep helped me get some energy. Yesterday my brain was running on 2005 Internet Explorer speeds!!

Oh I did :) I've actually been working my way through it pretty slowly. Just a glass topped off with some sprite to give it some bubbles! But I did read that new book too and that was such a nice feeling to get through a new book.

Yesterday was a super productive day! I got a lot of work related stuff done, despite the extra sleep. And got plenty of water in my system.

I also managed to recreate a dish I'd been trying to make for years!! When I was in college, one of my comfort restaurants was a place called "In the Nood," which was like their take on Noodles and Co.  It was mostly Asian style noodles, but they also had a couple of other main dishes- one of which was my favorite. It was a ravioli with a pesto alfredo sauce, grilled chicken, parmesan cheese, and some pine nuts. (I usually got some cheesecake to eat after but that's unrelated for this story). I've tried pesto alfredo before but it never really turned out as expected. But yesterday not only did I get the chicken to turn out closer to what I'd want (though if I hadn't used my cast iron to bake bread I'd have  used it for this), the ravioli I'd bought were tasty and the sauce was PERFECT. The trick is to put pesto (like a spoonful or two) and some minced garlic into the butter for the rue. Then once everything gets mixed together, you add the flour, then the heavy cream and milk (or half and half - I was going to go all heavy cream but it was too thick so I added some milk) and once the mess starts to thicken then I add shredded parmesan. I did not add the extra shredded parm or the pine nuts - the parm because I was too hungry and the pine nuts because my husband thinks they're weird.

See that's a lot better.

I'm getting more done towards my goals, which is really nice. I definitely see where I need to work more, but I've made improvements in some of the areas where I wasn't doing well. Which I'll take.

One place I'd like to do some work sooner rather than later is in my food department. I haven't been eating well what with my exhaustion and my ankle and everything. It's something I want to start doing again, just because I don't feel super well most of the time. And I want to get in better shape once my ankle isn't acting dumb again. I'm probably about 2 weeks away from being able to get back on the walls and in dance class again, just in time for my best friend to come see us for a few days. So we can do dance classes AND go climbing :)

Tomorrow is work again... which is causing me a moderate amount of stress. I'm trying not to think about work too much outside of "work hours" but I do think it affects my sleeping and general ability to chill though.
