Darkfoxx 72: It’s .... Not Winter?

Brains are interesting things, and the persistence of ones’ past experiences is super fascinating. 

 

Case in point: 

 

It’s February. 

 

I spent my early childhood in the Midwest USA, where we pretty much always had snow this time of year. 

 

I split my remaining childhood between the Midwest and Southeastern US, where it was always cold - but not usually cold enough to snow - and potentially rainy this time of year. 

 

I moved to the extreme Southeastern US, where winter meant the dry season and temps would dip down to jacket territory. 

 

I moved to the Northeast, where the biting wind and snow would occasionally cause the City to freeze, resembling a snow globe. 

 

I currently live in the Middle East, where it’s sunny every day with an average temp in the high 70s F. Winter here means the freedom to enjoy the outdoors and (usually) an increase in festivals and other cool things to do.

 

What does my brain think about all this bouncing around? 

 

My brain takes the calendar month and the deep shade that is my balcony (my apartment doesn’t get direct sunlight at any time of the year) and translates that into: whelp, it must be cold. Probably with howling winds. Never mind that it’s 23C in the house; you want to hibernate with your gathered nuts. Cabbage & potatoes with kielbasa sounds great. 

 

I’m continually shocked that it’s warm outside. Shocked and disappointed that it’s too warm for a jacket (most days, and then the wind kicks up and I’m freezing to death). 

 

I’ve spoken about this disconnect to friends from other climates (mostly regarding holidays), and their feeling is the same: my Australian friends fare pretty well - and are more surprised when it’s 50C here in July - friends from snowy climes are confused in similar way to me. 

 

Friends that are less hiberatory (just go with it) see less of a disconnect because they deal more in actual reality - whereas I have theory and feeling to inform my brain. 

 

Super interesting stuff and has shitall to do with my goals this Cycle, but is a drop in the bucket to explain my seasonal need to pad my ass with fat (lol).

More contextual stuff: 

 

There is also a rumor that we may imminently be going back into lockdown here. They’ve increased restrictions a bit again (with at least lip service being paid to mask enforcement), but cases are still rising (we are currently at 427 new daily cases). 

 

We are also in the midst of the FIFA World Cup 2020 (or something like that) tournament with a big tennis tournament later in the month set to start. And it’s winter - when things usually happen around here. 

 

Aaaaaand the blockade just lifted, and with it - a slight lift in travel restrictions (quarantine is still required and tourists aren’t allowed in - but citizens and residents can, at least at this moment, move with some amount of guarantee they can get back into the country if they leave. We’ve also got at least 1 travel bubble in place). 

 

So. That all is a conflicting pile of info and it’s unclear what that all will come to mean for day-to-day life. Whatever it is, I shall adjust accordingly. Updates coming if needed. 

 

 

Goal 1: Nutrition

 

Staying the course on my more recent nutritional guidelines: Smaller portions, less meat, more veggies, nutrient dense food options, no GI issues. Drink enough water. Eat with an eye toward Base MFP goals for slow weight loss: 1,260 calories, 20% protein, 50% carbs, 30% fat but without judgement if I go over or under on calories. Basically, eat what I’m going to eat - but by the fact of tracking, that tends to be more reasonable. I’ll also be adding in some probiotics and digestive enzymes in an effort to help with gut issues. 

 

 

Goal 2: Fitness 

 

Staying my Druidy course of action (shocker) with 4-5 yoga classes per week - hoping to continue my M vinyasa /T functional/W detox/F handstands schedule, with a 20 minute walk to and from the studio. 

 

 

Goal 3: Fulfillment 

 

This goal encompasses a bunch of small things I have going on a daily basis already - with a couple tweaks. Some bloggy stuff, some creative stuff, some dog stuff.

Or, if restrictions go the other way, who knows? We may just see a return to forced scheduled socialization

I have to admit, I kind of loved having a warm "winter" like that - the daytime temperatures were basically a really good British summertime, so I finally felt comfortable and got a tan!

Ok. Posting for realz commences tomorrow. 

 

Wednesday was fine - don’t remember it, but it must have been ok. 

 

Thursday was my first wine lunch in a year, and it actually ended at like 6, so that wasn’t so bad. I was drunk af and managed to get home & half naked without clearly remembering it, so there’s that. 

 

Had the McDonald’s DH ordered me for lunch the next day (eew, but hangover food few). Skipped yoga because while I was feeling mostly fine, I slept pretty much all day and had an intense aversion to peopleing. Wine group was draining. 

 

The weekend was ... fine. Ate too damn much Korean BBQ during our using Valentines Day as an excuse to go out for dinner on a Sunday and stayed up until 2:30 am reading ... again. Oops. 

 

Weighed in and was surprised I was down a bit - my body feels heavy af. 

 

Pups have been snuggled, drawings have been done most days. I’ve been skipping out on my physical crafts as of late and am trying to land on some fabric I like for a baby quilt. I think I’ll wait for the sex to pick; I’m going non-babyish prints, but am torn between geometric lines & damasky florals.

[ ☑️ ] Yoga class: Detox class and it was a doozy. We worked on sleeping flamingo, flying dragon, crow and side crow. It was an instructor I haven’t seen in months, which was great - and she promised a chance to play and have fun in class. Did not disappoint.

Dinner: Leftover spicy potatoes with sautéed wing beans (this is the first time I’d seen them - they’re wild looking and the NYT had hailed them as the next super bean to save the world and all the vegetarians in the late 80s/early 90s. Super interesting stuff) and a fried egg. Single lady night = 100% chance of hash

Still didn’t want to do any of the above productive shit. True Crime YouTube is 95% caught up on, and my Island is looking snatched - barring the rock I’ve completely lost. I have a standing stone ring in my gothy witch woods and accidentally crushed one of the rocks last week. I plugged up all the other spawn points on the island with snowflakes - or at least I thought I did - but now I can’t find the damn rock. Either I have some sort of glitch and it isn’t spawning, or it’s hiding somewhere. Ah well, the snow is set to thaw in the game by the end of the month; maybe I’ll be able to see it better then. 

 

When it does, I’m thinking about redecorating a bit. I have a hedge maze outside of my Overlook hotel, and it’s taking up a lot of real estate that could be used for something else grand. Or more woods. But like mixed tree woods with bamboo and maybe I’ll put the hidden Onsen back. Or, I could turn the Overlook into a castle, and go gothic horror with it.... I *do* have the video surveillance wallpaper that’s creepy but fantastic. And jail bars. And a camcorder ...... I need more cobwebs, though.

Since I didn’t wanna go to yoga, I forced myself to be productive by finishing the W30 e-Book, putting it up on a platform for sale, going through the rigamarole for being able to accept some form of payment [life is hard without a real (non-VOIP) US phone number], and posting a ‘for sale’ page on the blog. I’ll have to do an actual post about it sometime, but I need to give myself a little space to do so first since of course I hate the book since I’ve finished it because: perfectionist but also a professional self-saboteur. 

 

I posted my weekly recipe, too, since I wasn’t terribly interested in watching yet another Forged In Fire episode. I love the show, but it’s been repetitive lately - at least this episode backed away from the Sanmai(sp?) all the time billet requirement.

[ ☑️ ] Enrichment feeds for the pups:  Frozen foods night, provided by DH. I only got a cursory welcome home when I returned from yoga 

[ - ] Training for the pups

[ ☑️ ] Yoga class:  Handstand practice went well. I’ve finally turned the corner with kicking up into actual handstand with no momentum - I can now get my butt up. Still have a little panic when my full weight hits my wrist, but that will change as I gain confidence. I alternated handstand with pincha and did really well - found my balance quite a few times (for a second or two at a time) sans wall. 

Breakfast: Oats + peanut butter + banana

Lunch: Leftover smashed potatoes with wing beans

Week 1: Saturday/Sunday

 

Managed to leave the house Saturday to go check out a new BBQ joint. This one is from Singapore, and unsurprisingly has a strong pan-US attempt. 
 

the brisket isn’t as good as the other place. This is not what I would term hot chicken, but it was definitely good, and the lamb chops were up to par with the local scene. The duck spring rolls were great; and the cornbread was the style I like. 
 

too damn expensive for what it was, but that’s to be expected here.

Sunday was our usual mall day. I grabbed frozen dumplings for dinner and was kiiiinda offended by the English translation of one type - something along the line of housewife’s breasts. But, after stuffing, I kinda see it. 😆

That brisket looks like it has a decent bark but it's really lacking a smoke ring. Also looking at the fat it doesn't look like they smoked it long enough to let the fat render into the rest of the meat.

Today my brain was also an asshole, so that was fun. I love it when my brain stage whispers that my mother is dead - and then starts in on all the shitty things she ever said or did - and my shitty or oblivious responses. Makes for a fun day. 

 

Wait, what? I just saw a Palmer’s add (for a jarred version of I’m assuming their lotion) that insinuated mixing eyeshadow pigment with their product makes a great look. Ummm ... I’ve never heard that, and would be interested to see if that works or burns your eyes.

Mixing certain types of powder eyeshadows with a liquid like setting spray can look great, but a lotion? First thought is that a lotion is far too heavy for that to be manageable to apply with any finesse or blending control.
