Chesire: The Book of Singing Ice

Recommended Posts

Just about every place I go outside for walks or runs has frozen ponds or canals which have been singing a lovely song consisting of frog-like croaks, creaking, and echoing with sounds like a large spring bouncing as the ice fluctuates with the changing weather.  This challenge I expect to hear a lot of singing because I need to readjust my fitness for a bit and plan to be outside a lot.

  • thing #1:  I have the beginning signs of a developing shoulder issue which seems connected to over use of Lat Dorsi, slacking scap setting work, and questionable posture.   I'm going to tackle this and hope I can do some recovery without needing to go to PT.  I promise that I will see a professional if I don't have significant improvement over the next few weeks.
  • thing #2:  Why can't I bring myself to do stretching and mobility work?  I know it is so helpful in preventing injury, sorta like in thing #1.  Betcha if I had been more devoted to prep work before and stretching after strength work that wouldn't have developed.  Argh.  Ok....  So this I will do.

This challenge will only receive a passing grade (yes, I do grade each and every one, with notes, in my challenge journal) if I do:

  • task 1:  stretching and mobility like I planned to last challenge, using GMB and SoC recommendations.  Daily.
  • task 2:  do shoulder strength and stretch from rehab plan of other shoulder, and scapular setting techniques from GMB and SoC- must limit upper body work to minimal maintenance.   E/O day.

That's it for official tracking.

Other stuff that will be happening:

  • continue budget tracking and adjusting
  • focus on outdoor cardio instead of strength (spend time with the singing ice)
  • plan and prep garden when able
  • repair dining room wall - learn/decide what to do about plaster vs dry wall
  • explore meditation and mindfulness
  • off the computer at night, so find something to do that isn't knitting or crocheting.  I need to rest my hands and forearms .  Puzzles, games?
  • avoiding alcohol continues

Final thought for now

What is the recommended duration for holding a baby you don't really want to hold?  As an aunt?  When your mom/ new grandmother is watching and clearly excited?  Why do people insist on handing me their babies?!  Not complaining, I'm just not excited about babies.  I'm excited for people who are excited to have babies.  And they made me feed him!  I passed on the burping and diaper work.

But look at this cute little yoda!

Today is the first day in weeks I've had the focus and interest in strength training!  I've been respecting/ not forcing fitness for lots of reasons (see shoulder issue above) but also my brain needed the allowance.  I apparently was going through a anxiety and depression phase without fully recognizing it until a few days ago where everything and anything was just too much.

So, feeling better and more focused, but still respecting that shoulder and sticking to the plan.  Maybe I'll explore the beginner strength plans and focus on form and control ONLY if I also stick to the rehab plan and respect any twinges.

I totally understand what you mean about going through anxiety and depression without fully recognizing it. It just sometimes creeps in until, as you said, everything and anything is just too much 😅 Happy to hear that you're feeling better now!

Proceeding slowly with the strength training sounds like a good idea :) By the way, what kind of puzzles have you already tried? I'm also trying to find something else to do than surf online too much...

Whatever I could find free or really cheap at a thrift shop, and then I raided my mom's house for the amazing 80's landscapes she had 😆

I came over to snoop at your posts and follow along.

Your yoga picture is adorable. I’m totally with you on the new baby holding. I always find it awkward when a baby is thrust into my arms without someone asking me if I want to hold them. Often, my husband is nearby when this happens and I casually hand the baby to him (he loves holding little ones). I managed well with my kids when they were tiny but was relieved the day they were mobile. I prefer the mobile munchkins who play and speak adorably cute, nonsensical sentences.

With your shoulder, have you consulted with a chiropractor? A chiropractor has saved me from a few surgeries recommended by doctors. My husband had a shoulder issue similar to what you describe and was able to rehab it with a few adjustments and the PT type exercises. Before he went to the chiropractor he was accidentally overdoing things by doing the exercises and stretches that he knew should help ease pain and didn’t always work. A good chiropractor will refer you to a doctor if they don’t think your issue is something they can fix. They will also give you stretches, exercises, and explanations to help with pain management and prevention. (When we moved to Idaho I visited three chiropractors before I found one that did this.)

I have a couple thrift store puzzles that moved with me and are awaiting my attention. One of them is a mystery puzzle where the photo on the box doesn’t match the puzzle inside. Clever marketing? Or a great way to cover a manufacturing mistake?

Enjoy the day.

I love this!  The best is my friend's twin 3yos who "talk" between themselves.

I haven't on this shoulder.  When the world went mad I stopped going and just haven't gone back for no good reason :). I did when I had an issue with the other shoulder 18 mo ago and between the Dr and PT all is lovely with that one.  In the particular instance I know I'm not setting my shoulder blade properly (it's winging out) and somehow using my anterior body for pull ups.  I've definitely made huge improvements in the last few weeks!

Good things to report.

Mostly doing the rehab plan.  I don't know why I resist cool downs and stretching so much!  So much more movement and less discomfort.  I can feel the proper muscles activating more easily everyday.  Positive results should bring positive follow through

  • plan and prep garden when able  🌻🍅  just waiting for seeds to arrive  mmmmm... tomatoes.  Will officially plan space this weekend.
  • repair dining room wall - learn/decide what to do about plaster vs dry wall ✔️✔️
  • explore meditation and mindfulness  ✔️- John Kabat Zinn seems to be a good match
  • off the computer at night, so find something to do that isn't knitting or crocheting.  I need to rest my hands and forearms .  Puzzles, games? ✔️ another puzzle done.  This is definitely helping prevent stupid scrolling
  • avoiding alcohol continues  :teapot:  <-that's a teapot?  huh?  going well.  not perfect, but much better

Sounds like nice progress.

My mom loved to garden. Every year she’d deliberate about what she’d have in her “small” garden. One year she couldn’t decide on which tomato variety to go with so she had three kinds (in addition to beets, green onions, herbs, pumpkins, squash, and a few kinds of lettuce). That year I swear every seed sprouted. She couldn’t pitch any of the seedlings, so they were all planted. Her garden covered at least an acre in her front yard and also functioned as her “flower” garden near the house. She laughed every time I came over to help her weed her small garden. :)

There is something about time when I’ve puttered outside with plants that turns it into a form of meditation.

"Small" garden, huh?  No envy at all.  I tried using my front space for some extra tomato plants, but would you believe we caught people WALKING UP OUR DRIVEWAY to steal tomatoes!  And then suddenly they didn't understand English when we called them on it, even though they'd just been chatting in English.  So, anyway, gardening is all done in back now :)

And!  I didn't expect it at all, but I was asked to be godmother to the little monster :) ❤️ .   If I was working on figuring out feral housewife, does this mean I get to work on feral godmother, instead of fairy?  Off to ponder.

Good Job!!!

i tried to walk to Mordor once.  Kept forgetting to track on the app. I think I made it as far as Rivendell.  That was a while ago.  Maybe I'll try it again.

All in all, that was a good challenge.  I wasn't 100% on meeting my set graded goal, but definitely was pretty consistent and made progress.  And, did you know, stretching really does help?!  *heavy sarcasm

on to the next book!
