Ranger Hal - Today's Identity

Recommended Posts

I'm Ranger Hal (female). I do adventury things: hiking, climbing, search and rescue. I'm not terribly happy about how last challenge went. I did some stuff, but I also didn't do some stuff. So maybe I need to work on some of those mindset things. Which I have been avoiding because I'm not terribly interested in being a "superhero." And redefining my identity is big and scary. But I can change it for a day. So, today I am a person who gets up 5 minutes after the first alarm and does a morning workout. Today I am a person who does the sink full of dishes.

Things I'm working on

  • Getting up in the morning
  • Kettlebell workouts
  • Hiking during the week
  • Learning stuff (mountaineering class, soldering)
  • Housework ("What Rangers do...is the housework." )
  • Starting the last TV episode of the night at a reasonable time (currently 10:15pm)
  • Going to bed at a reasonable time (currently 11:30pm)

Let's see how this goes.

Oh, man, search and rescue is intense! I looked into it when I got my dog because I thought she might be good at it. Still think she would have been, but I decided it wasn't a great fit for me. Mad respect for anyone who signs up for that commitment.

Oh yeah, search dogs is intense! I also have mad respect for those folks. They probably put in at least 4x the amount of time that I do into training (I'm ground search).

Today I am someone who didn't get enough work done during the day yesterday and kept working way too late into the evening to make up for it, and then stayed up even later reading. So getting up this morning was much harder.

Today I am also someone who actually took a lunch break (kind of rare occurrence) and took the pile of cardboard to the recycling center. I have regained a corner of my kitchen!

Gah! I'm only on episode 2 of The Expanse and they seem to have terrible cliffhangers at the ends of the episodes. Today I am someone who doesn't start the next episode because it's too late.

I am also someone who does the dishes and a mobility workout.

This morning was productive. I went to bed on time and got up 10 minutes after second alarm (this is actually pretty good compared to some days). I made pumpkin muffins, washed the dishes, and did a kettlebell workout. I even put the extra pumpkin into the freezer so it won't sit in the fridge for weeks. Then I ate some of the muffins.

Have you ever looked into a sunrise alarm clock? I got one for Christmas and it's been a game-changer for my mornings.

No, I haven't. I might be trying to create something similar with my multiple alarms. First alarm is there so I can ignore/snooze it, but be sort of awake when second alarm goes off. Second alarm is when I have decided I should get up, although sometimes I snooze it as well. Right now, it seems to be working reasonably well as long as I went to bed early enough to get adequate sleep. If I didn't get enough sleep and don't have any particularly urgent reason to be up (workouts are not urgent), I can easily hit the snooze button for 45+ minutes.

The other awesome thing in alarms is ones that are responsive to your sleep cycles, and wake you in a range of time when you're sleeping lightly. Some fitness trackers do this, and some phone sleep tracking apps, which use motion detection of the bed surface.

This is the betrayal I can never forgive. Somehow there are always more.

Today I am someone who went to bed early so I could get up at 6am for training. And I actually got up at 6am. And training is cancelled. (To be fair, there's snow in the lowlands, it's 10F and windy where we were going in the mountains, chains are required on all non-4WD vehicles to get there, and I wasn't excited about the avalanche forecast although it's only moderate if we stay below treeline, so training wasn't going to be fun and was probably going to become an exercise in avoiding hypothermia.) So now I'm awake at 6am with nothing to do for the day. I am rather amused. At least the power came back on (I only know it went out because the clocks need to be reset).

Yesterday I went for a hike. It was windy and snowy, but it was good. I needed to get a conditioning hike in and I'm glad I took advantage of cancelled training to do it. I also stopped by a Mexican restaurant to get take-home food. It was one of the places that some of the SAR people would go if we needed food after a mission (assuming it wasn't midnight and they were open). For me, eating at restaurants is more of a social thing, so getting food just for me was special, and it was nice to be able to support a favorite restaurant.

Today church was cancelled because there was too much snow and nowhere to park. I was glad because I really didn't want to be out driving on the roads that early in the morning. They were bad enough yesterday. I didn't want to be out on them after they had a chance to freeze overnight. I enjoyed the relaxed morning. I don't get a lot of those. On weekdays, there's work. Saturdays are usually for outdoor stuff, and there's church on Sundays. So I didn't set any alarms, slept in, and didn't get up for an hour after I woke up. It was glorious!

Yesterday I watched lots of tv, but I also did things in between: dishes, sweeping, grocery shopping, cooking @Snarkyfishguts's Hawaiian Chicken.

Today I am somebody who stayed up too late last night. I set my alarms later, so I think I got enough sleep, but it also meant I didn't have time to do anything before work. Looks like I might be a little late tonight too, but I was getting something done that I kept putting off/forgetting about.

Did you like the recipe? Were there changes you would make to it? :D

I did like it. I hadn't made anything like this before, but I like the way it turned out. It was fun shredding the chicken!

The changes I made were minor substitutions where I was missing some ingredients: white sugar and molasses because I couldn't find any brown sugar in the house, half mango juice instead of pineapple because I had some leftover (and the can of pineapple didn't have enough juice anyway), cashews instead of macadamia nuts, white vinegar instead of rice wine vinegar. Oh, and I didn't quite have 3 lb of chicken, but it seemed to work out. As for other changes I would make, well, my taste tends to run towards savory instead of sweet and I suspect changes along that line would mean it wasn't Hawaiian Chicken anymore, so I would probably look for a different recipe instead of trying to modify this one, but that's a project for another day. I'm still enjoying the leftovers!

I have decided that the best way to eat it is an open faced sandwich using hamburger buns.

Today I am someone who did a kettlebell workout when I didn't feel like it. I even did the actual number of overhead presses (I usually can't do them all because my left arm isn't as strong). And I did the dishes. And I drank tea and watched an episode of The Expanse.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty sweet too. I think next time I will cut down the sugar by half again. I cut down the original recipe by a lot, and it's still very sweet. But I was worried it wouldn't thicken up as much without the sugar. 😕 It's a work in progress.  I find it's really good with plain rice and vegetables too.  But I really liked the coleslaw.

I hope the dishes haven't fought back at you!

They're fairly non-violent, but they are quietly piling up again!

I'm not doing much at the moment. Trying to survive a stressful project at work and that's taking a lot of my energy. Also, I suspect the kettlebell workouts were causing back pain. It was like my lower back would seize up and be painful in certain positions, but other times it would be fine. I'm probably not doing one or more of the exercises correctly. Anyway, since I haven't been doing workouts for a couple of weeks, my back has been happier.

Jeesh I hate when they do the pile up, give you luck on staying sane .

From my own experience of weird back pain, maybe after the job stress you look into playing around with different workouts? See what's back friendly but gets the muscles to "wake up" (I'm personally just figuring this out after 5 years on NF.

Yesterday, I went on a hike. It's the same one I did three weeks ago. Being able to hike up it in less than two hours carrying a certain amount of weight is the minimum fitness test for my climbing class and I did it this time! Last time it took me 3.5 hours to go up, but there were a lot of things that contributed to it taking that long. My pack was at least 30% heavier than it needed to be for the test, there was snow on the entire length of the trail (not just the last 1.5 miles), and there were snow drifts all over the trail on the upper half of the mountain due to strong winds. This time, the conditions were better and I pushed hard and got it done! I'm very happy to have that checked off my list of things to do.

Today, I went for a 5 minute walk before starting work. I'm also ignoring the dishes (again).
