Slow and steady wins Mahalak's race - he hopes!

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about trying to find a NF accountabilitybuddy, so if anyone reads this and is interested, let me know! In the meanwhile, I think I'm going to try and track progress and achievements on this page, as a way to help me check in more often. I'm also dipping my toe in the Druids' camp, given my desire for prayer and for balance. But I am grateful for the Rebels I've connected with, so I'm keep one foot in both camps for now.

Goals:

Post on NF 3 times per week

7.5 hours sleep per night

Discretionary fast food at once per week

20 minute walk per day, five days per week

Let's do this thing!

I hesitate to throw myself out there as an accountabilibuddy because I'm not completely reliable to check in online; sometimes it's the thing that is one thing too many for the day.  :)  But I promise to try to check in on your feed a few times per week.  And, just maybe, that means I'll check in with mine too.

I love that you made the fast food allowance part of your challenge!  It can be so much easier to have the better-for-you thing today when you know you get the treat tomorrow.

Do you have a specific plan to achieve your sleep goal?  Reading to unwind?  Bed time and awake time?  Etc

Do this thing!  Woot!

Thanks for the Woot! My sleep goes sideways, usually once a week. I love the "second sleep" idea, that biologically people have gone to sleep, awakened for a few hours, and then gone back to sleep. That describes me to a T. Problem is, I can't always sleep a little later to make up for the midway break. But generally I try to go to sleep when my wife does, around 10, and either I'm whooped enough to just go to sleep, or I read for a bit until my eyes droop. (I'm just realizing how many "oo" I've used in these few lines!) Some grief at work didn't help last night, as that wake up was nothing but trouble.

I've read some articles about the second sleep cycle.  It's a fascinating idea.  I don't quite buy the idea that people would go visiting in the middle of the night as some of them asserted.  How do you know your neighbor is on the same schedule as you??  Among other considerations.  Anyway....  You've recognized the situation, that helps.  Now, how to work with it instead of fighting it?  Barring the work grief days, of course.   Do you have a plan to work with those wakeful spells?   I'd hazard a guess that aforementioned book would come into play until eyes drooped again.  :)

I was going to try to fit in as many "oo's" as possible, but decided I just didn't give a hoot right now.

Haha! You're really cooking now! I hadn't heard about visiting in the middle night, but I figure that's how people wrote so many books (ha!) and letters. If it is late enough in the week and my sermon is bubbling, I'll often get up and write it - even if I'm then pooped the next day. Otherwise I tend to watch TV for a few hours.

First, because there's no electric light. Everyone is on the sun schedule. Second, small towns are flipping nosy.

I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.

A nice win today! After a full and productive day, I couldn't put off shoveling any longer. So I hit it for quite a while, and was left pretty tired afterward.  But I still had a bit of time before dinner, and so I thought I'd see if I could get some exercise in. Next thing I knew, I got my whole workout in (pull day)! It felt great, not only in my body, but in my spirit!

ha!  yep!  And I've read enough classic novels in which people go to bed after midnight and are up around dawn in the spring and summer.  So no 8 hours for them!

How has your week been?  Been able to get walks in?

Well...honestly, it has been a crappy week in many ways, but I've been doing well with my walks, averaging 39 minutes a day this week! The walks, especially a couple on some rare sunny days, have probably helped it not be an even crappier week!

What did you have in mind? (Yes I know I'm very late, but there's always next time.) I have been trying to convince myself that I want to walk in the frigid wasteland and not succeeding very often, especially since it's often after dark by the time I can walk. Sounds like you are doing well on that front though!

I guess my high-end hope is the kind of partnership where folks check in really regularly with each other, with honest "this is how I walked my walk today," "this is what I did" or 'this is what I ate" kinds of things. Really knowing someone was there and paying attention. I occasionally hear about such partnerships/relationships, and am always in awe. But as I say, that is the deep end of the hope pool, and know something less may be the best I can hope for, or at least where any relationship can start.

As for my walk, these days I've been able to mix in some outdoor walks with the treadmill - Netflix on my tablet sure helps the time pass on that mouse wheel!

Oh man, I can taste it! Only 140 miles (3 good months or 2 really good months) until I get back to Hobbiton! I am officially inspired!

Just dropping in to follow. I have been generally doing well at my challenges but the walk thing is still eluding me. Might get back on the walk to Mordor wagon next challenge.

Slow and steady is definitely the way to make long term change, it's really helped me :)

Walk to Mordor... I think I haven't updated mine for more than a year. 😬

Hmm, the accountability partnership thing is interesting. I lucked into someone who had the same workout days as me early in my time on NF, and we would remind/check in with each other. It really did help. (We are no longer on the same workout schedule.) I am useless for getting walks done till the snow is gone, but it is a daily thing for me for the rest of the year. Send me a PM if you're interested and we'll see what can be arranged. :)

It's supposed to hit 60 degrees several days this week! I may roll naked in the grass, just to soak up as much sun as I can! If I can stay on top of Lent responsibilities, I ought to be able to get some steps in!

See, this is why I hesitated to be an accountibilibuddy.  I got lost.  Woohoo! about the Walk!  Allow me a moment to celebrate too!  As of last night, 25 miles to the end of my first Walk to Mordor! So, depending on lots of things... maybe a week to finish?

Enjoy the warm days.  A sun nap sounds delightful, though rolling naked in the grass sounds pretty itchy to me 😆

Wow! That's terrific! You talk of your first Walk to Mordor, but I need to start thinking about my next trip. I've "walked" across the US, the Camino de Santiago, Appalachian Trail, and a few others. I'll have to google "famous walks"! Any thoughts?

I would like to find a different walk but haven't put in the time to look yet.

I'm waiting for my children's sermon to download, so I did a little googling.  I think I've gotten spoiled, because when I see a trail is only a few hundred miles, I think, "ah, it will be over too soon"! This one has piqued my interest: tn_P1000882-M.jpg.a56e7130589c31b45d5c8bc7535c68c0.jpg

Shikoku Pilgrimage, Japan

With 1,200 years of history, the Shikoku Pilgrimage (or Shikoku O-Henro) runs through 88 temples and 200 bangais along the coast of Shikoku. The trail not only puts your determination to the test, but also gives a peek into Japan’s history and tradition. As one of the longest and most famous walking trails in the world, it runs for over 1,400km and can take anywhere from 30 to 60 days to complete. There are a number of shorter imitative trails in Japan, such as the 150km circuit on the island of Shōdoshima, a 3km course in Ninna-ji, Kyoto and a route on the Chita Peninsula.

Wow. I am feeling Lent, and two weekly services and planning several others. I'm glad I can take Monday off, and still get my four days of exercise in this week.
