How is Hannah's prayer going?

Unrelated to memorization, I've been reading Isaiah and got my mind blown this morning in chapter 59 when it talks about God putting on the breastplate of righteousness and the helmet of salvation in preparation for judging and redeeming his people. How have I heard (and even taught!) multiple lessons on the armor of God in Ephesians and never realized that it ties back to Isaiah? I feel like it changes the entire connotation of that passage.

poorly, as in I haven't even started yet. I keep thinking I need to write it down, but haven't yet. Today.  And wow, I never realized that about the armor of God reference either. It constantly amazes me how much of the New Testament references the Old Testament. Which is yet another reason why we need to read both testaments.

I've done a terrible job keeping up anywhere, but I still want to keep checking in here and striving to get back into this groove.

I found another bullet journal while cleaning that I was collecting favorite passages in, and it really has me jonesing to collect more passages.

Scripture memorization has always been a weakness. I'm intrigued by this Bible Memory app mentioned above though. Maybe it, and some accountability, will help?

Anyway, hi! :)

Anyway, hi! :)

Hey Mezzo!

We've been away from this thread for a few months, but I know several of us might be into getting back on board with it.

I've managed a fantastic streak of devotional reading daily, but I confess it's a read through before bed, where I might glean some stuff from it, but don't really *reflect* on it.  I'd like to change that a bit.   I was thinking that picking some devotions/studies and using them as an online group study might help with that.   If folks were interested.

If nothing else, I would like to get this here thread active again, and propose the following verse to start it off:

Psalm 91:4

He will cover you with feathers.  He will shelter you with his wings.  His faithful promises are your armor and protection.

Mostly because I recently read a devotional about knowing His promises and learning who God is, so that we can better put our trust in him.   And well, that's something I can always work on, lol!

What version are you using, @Starpuck? I've been using ESV which is "He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge. His faithfulness is a shield and buckler."

Thanks for kicking us back into gear, @MezzotheLefty!

It was the KLOVE verse of the day at some point and I downloaded the image, lol.   Says NLT on that.   I was raised NIV, but I like to juggle back and forth between that and NLT.  Some verses feel better / more complete in one translation over another for me.    Anyone else have that? :)

I grew up on NIV too, but within the past several years I've switched over almost exclusively to ESV. Not familiar with the NLT at all, but I do like the way they've phrased this verse.

I try to stick more to the big picture idea of verses and not get sucked too far into specific word choices, since we're reading a translation (and in some cases a translation of a translation) and I've found that when people get too hung up on the connotations of specific words they're often reading something into it that wouldn't be indicated in the original.

I grew up NIV and go back to it often out of habit.  The nerd in me enjoys comparing versions though. (I have a lot of KJV diehards in my circle so some verses don't sound right any other way!)

I like the NLT version above and the NIV:

He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. Psalms 91:4

I think 'armor and protection' is less archaic than 'shield and rampart' but "under his wings you will find refuge" is more active. Like, I actually have to GO to Him to find the refuge.

I have it added to Bible Memory, so let the memorizing begin! :D

The greatest thing about this group for me, is hearing other people reflect on different words and angles.  It's like learning more and more about how deep the verse can be as you examine the layers. :)

The downside of looking at the verse in multiple versions:  I got confused in reciting the verse from memory and mixed it up...

So Close Collider Video GIF by Movie Trivia Schmoedown

I'm still mulling Sunday's sermon: Comparison is the thief of joy. Something I've heard in many sermons before and goes in one ear out the other because (I think) I don't compare myself to other people. I don't wish I had other peoples houses or cars or stuff or life. I do not covet my neighbor's anything.

BUT God had a convicting message for me: My joy is stolen because I'm comparing myself to the impossible perfect version of myself. Perfectionism is my struggle (see sig) and it is absolutely  a form of comparison.  Comparison tells me all the things I should have done but didn't. I've known that perfectionism is a big problem for me, but somehow framing it this way makes me look at it differently.  I'm picking at it and realizing different ways this manifests in my life.

It's amazing how God can tell you something 50 times and the 51st, you finally get it. :)

A have a lot of "memorized" verses in my head that are actually a mixture of a few Bible versions.🙄

I had never thought of perfectionism that way. But it is very  true.  And then it comes to not trusting that God is working in me. I'm glad God is patient enough to keep telling me , because I am often slow to get it!

How are we all doing on Psalm 91:4?

The app says I'm holding steady at 95% (of all the words to trip up on it's consistently the placement of the 'and' that messes me up 🤦).

I'm adding another to my list and thought I'd share. It's another promise that a friend of mine shared as her comfort against anxiety.

Ugh! Totally forgot all about it! I had my memory verses in an old , plastic index card box. I bought a really pretty box to put them in, Time to make good use  of it and writie it down. I need to officially add this to my challenge, so I don't forgot to do it

Two of my main goals for this 5 week challenge are to stay more focused in the present and to ease back into strength training, so Proverbs 31:25-27 seems like the perfect passage for me right now:

She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise and she gives instructions with kindness. She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness.

Talk about #goals.

How's everyone doing with their Bible memory? I'm really enjoying using the Bible app. I've even gotten a 100% sometimes.  And I added a new verse. Phillipians 3:12, which is one I worked on before, but I need to work on it more. Instead of scrolling social media, it's nice to have the memory app to work on occasionally.

The app is nice, but I prefer to use the desktop version because typing it on the keyboard seems to help lock it in my memory better.

I'm up to 98-99% on Proverbs 31:25-27. Thinking it's about time to add a new verse in.

Had a little revelation last week while thinking about "she laughs with fear of the future" and "when she speaks her words are wise and she gives instructions with kindness." Even though I know how important context is, I've still been thinking of this as two separate things. But it occurred to me that it is much easier for me to be wise and kind when I am making time for joy in my life. There's a reason these verses were put together.

Maybe I should install the desktop version too. That way I'd have both. I have an old brain that doesn't like memorizing so the more work on it the better.

Very good thoughts! One of the things I like about memorizing scripture, is that then I meditate on it, and  see more truths and apply them.

Love this.  Goals indeed! I think I'll add this one as well; I love this phrase in particular: "she laughs without fear of the future." I can't imagine not fearing for the future, but I'd dearly love to have that kind of faith.

I love Proverbs 31 in general. One of the few verses I've had memorized since my teens is Proverbs 31:30. "Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised."
