Xena kicks up her feet and...

I've got a foot injury, so running will be minimal at best this challenge. I'll run what I can when I think I can do it without making things worse. In the meantime, I need to give myself some routines, in part to replace the structure running used to provide.

I want to get started on something now, but don't really want to commit to 5 weeks of anything at the moment, so I'm going to try this for 2 weeks:

1. Strength training of some sort 3x/ week. I'm feeling motivated to do some dumbbell stuff, and I've pulled out a couple workouts to try. (2 pts each: 12 pts)

2. Back-focused yoga routine 2x/week. (2 pts each: 8 pts)

3. Saturday morning yoga class unless I have a good reason not to. (3 pts each: 6 pts)

4. Go outside and walk (or run) every day unless I really think it would be bad for my foot. (1 pt each: 14 pts)

5. Read 50 pages of the Spanish book. (2 pt/5 pages, 20 pts)

60 pts possible. If I get 54 pts, I'll buy myself a new set of dumbbells (either 8 or 12 lb...whichever seems like it would be more useful to add)...or if that doesn't seem too useful, I'll think of a treat of similar value.

Other routines to focus on for this week...

Bummer on the foot injury, Xena. The important thing, is you’re not allowing yourself to do nothing and that’s important. Keep staying positive and do what you can WHEN you can :)

Swift recovery to you! I agree with Tankimus, healing is always worth it. Also yay for Spanish! I'm having lessons at the moment so that one day I can have a proper conversation with my partner's family...

Thanks so much for the good wishes everyone!

Today was a good start. Did my strength work and just a big of easy exercises for my back. Did a short-ish walk. Iced my foot.

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who forgot how to do it. Go to profiles, and it's under editing the profile. I know, because I just now figured it out

I didn't even realize this was a thing! [*Theophilus adds this as zero week goal to challenge*]

Looks like a great challenge and you seem to be off to a great start. Wishing you swift healing!

I really appreciate the well wishes! It made me feel especially supported on the forum today 🙂

Today was pretty good. I did some yoga in the morning, focusing on trying to loosen up my back. Back still feels like an old lady back, but I'll keep working on it. Went for a ~40 min walk. Had a few twinges in my foot during/after yoga. Can't really tell if it's getting better or not, but will stay off running for the rest of the week. Then will re-evaluate.

Not at all sore from my dumbbell routine yesterday, which makes me think I should do a bit more tomorrow. Will add on a couple exercises I was eyeing. For a couple of the exercises I did yesterday I did the first set with very light weights. This time I'll do all 3 sets with the same weight. I don't think I could go heavier on any of them (I only have 5-10-15 lbs right now, and those are pretty big jumps...that's why I'm thinking to buy 8's or 12's as a reward).

Went into work today (I've been physically going in 2x per week) and was able to do some hands-on stuff, including some work outside. It's a nice break from all the computer stuff I do from home.

Got back into my Spanish reading last night. I gotta say, my progress page-by-page is quite slow, but something always seems to happen within my 5-page increments. I think reading this slowly  helps me appreciate it differently than I would otherwise (for those new to the thread, or those who don't remember every detail of my life, I'm slogging through "Love in the time of cholera").

Good enough day today that started with a nice surprise.

Spoiler

iris.jpg.afee180496b7984b0bc5aa03d5360bb8.jpg

Dwarf iris in my backyard. Something new I tried planting last fall (covid hobby).

Did my dumbbell exercises (added a couple extra, which was a good idea) and stretched out my back. Went for a nice long walk with friends this afternoon and got back in time for Spanish class.

The only lame thing is I remembered this morning that I needed to get a starting weight, but the scale was broken -- honestly I'm not that heavy! I just changed the battery, so I'm not sure what's up. Of course it's a super annoying battery to change that involves a special little wrench I have to dig out. Not a big deal but annoying.

The past couple of days my back has felt really good. My foot is also feeling a lot better. I'm not running on it yet. Maybe a short run this weekend or maybe next week.

By a fortunate coincidence, my BFF just had knee surgery and also isn't able to do too much. We're gonna go somewhere this weekend and at least walk around. Thank goodness....I need SOMETHING to do!!!

Challenge-wise, today was fine...got up on time, walked 3 miles, did my back-centric yoga. Still gotta read Spanish.

...but first, I'm gonna log off and deal with my darned broken scale!!

Nothing too exciting to report. Changed the battery in my scale. Kept up with all the other stuff.

My cat has completely taken over my zoom meetings the past couple of days.

Sort of saw my first daffodil today...the bud was halfway open.

Stayed away from running a little longer. My foot mostly feels fine, but I still get some little twinges during/after yoga sessions or walks. I think if I started running it would "trend in the wrong direction" (to borrow a covid phrase).

Yeah, it's a little sad, but it'll be ok in the long run (heh heh)

Zero week update

[I'm making W0 + W1 into a little 2-week mini-challenge]

1. I did everything I said I would do...walking, dumbbells, yoga/stretching, reading Spanish.

2. I'm gonna try a different dumbbell workout next week and a different yoga sequence. I can mix and match these as much as I want.

3. I ran "zero miles" this week. I walked plenty but don't keep track of that because I'm not all that excited about it.

4. I might not want any dumbbells as a challenge reward. I'm thinking instead to buy some paints for a project I have in mind.

I made some short-term decisions about running:

  •  My foot doesn't feel much improved. I'm guessing it's because yoga and walking continue to irritate it. It doesn't hurt that much, but I think running would make it worse. To try to make it better I will use ice and ibuprofen this week. I will also avoid any yoga or lifting move that involves pushing off my toes (e.g., lunges, down dog).
  • I'm going to set aside the next two weeks to not freak out about this and not force any running.  If it feels magically better (a whole day with no pain), I can try a short run. After two weeks, I will re-assess...if it still hurts, I want to think about setting myself up for swimming or biking so I can keep some aerobic fitness.
  • If the weather is decent I'm taking myself hiking next weekend. It won't be great for my foot, but it's not as bad as running, and I need to live my life.

Wow you're doing great! Well done. Deffo take the time with the foot. Walking and yoga are so good for you, you're inspiring me/reminding me to do it too :) Como fue tu clase de espanol?

You are good friends, but let's not do anything drastic! I'm giving myself two weeks before I consider such things.

Where is @Sloth the Enduring? He's not here, and he should be.

I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.
