Scaly Freak keeps things short and simple

Recommended Posts

Between the songs of birds everywhere, flowers on the south-facing slopes, and fresh leaves on every tree, there is no question that spring finally has arrived in full. The warmer weather has led to daily walks outside the bunker, and Scalyfreak very much enjoys the sunshine and the apparent lack of large enemies waiting to ambush here. There are small predatory creatures, mostly imp-like anger demons that foolishly attack her and swiftly are dispersed, but none of the large monsters that are supposed to exist in the area.

Of course, like every other thing in life that seems too good to be true, the peace does not last.

It starts with complete silence. A deep silence that lasts long past when forest dwellers and animals would relax and begin moving about again, if the perceived danger had been nothing but false alarm. And then there a slight swishing sound, very slight, repeated a few times, before the silence changes and then the sharp scraping noise of heavy feet kicking off into a leap.

Scalyfreak dodges into a roll and immediately leaps to her feet, shield lifted as she draws her sword and searches for whatever just tried to ambush her.

This is going to be a short and simple challenge, with just one or two changes from the previous one, because what I was doing I the previous challenge is working and I really don't see a need to mess with something that works. Except of course for the part that stopped working: The lifting.

So this is an actual lifting challenge, for the first time in what feels like forever.

I started the Darebee Ironborn program a few days before the vaccination side effects took all my energy, so the plan is to get back to that. The program is designed for daily workouts, so my plan is to follow that and do one workout every evening until I've completed the program, which should be a little over three weeks from now. I haven't bothered with exact math.

Meditate, walk, duolingo, read, all those things are to continue as before, because they help keeping The Flame contained and calm. However, focus will be on getting back into the habit of lifting.

And that's it.

Lots of Star Trek: DS9 spoilers in the video in the spoiler, and they are almost all of them about Garak, because Garak is awesome (and a very good tailor).

I really should watch DS9 again, because it's been a very long time and I don't have clear memories of Garak, whom I have heard is awesome. And most definitely just a tailor.

I felt like I could run forever, like I could smell the wind and feel the grass under my feet, and just run forever.

DS9 side-tracked me last night and I forgot about my Ironborn goal. Ooops?

It's Garak's fault. Or Quark's.

Nope, it was all me. If the forum tries to take credit, just let me know and I'll set things straight.

"Lift all the things you have access to"? 😄 Doesn't quite have the same ring to it. But very excited for you about potential barbell action in the near future!

I am so excited! Since I cancelled my old gym membership last summer I am treating this as a fresh start and researching options among the various local fitness options. So far about nine out of ten are some kind of crossfit derivation, which is great for everyone who likes that, but it's not what I am looking for.

I actually did once, in our backyard, when she was younger. She was physically fully grown at the time, but mentally young and sheltered enough to think that charging and pouncing the skunk that was practically flattened against a corner of the house, was a good idea.  I disagreed, and rather than getting into a long discussion about why, I picked her up and carried her inside. :)

Hmm... now I'm tempted to find a way to do this again.

They might still be worth checking out in case they have open memberships that'd allow you to use their toys but not go to classes. After all, many cross fitters also do traditional strength training. Unfortunately I don't think it's very common for standard CF gyms to open up like that, but I'd still check.

Oh, that is a good point... I am a member of a Facebook group that shares info about covid-safe businesses in our county, and one particular cross-fit gym keeps coming up as being really good about taking precautions, enforcing masks, etc. I had not realized that there's a possibility of a non-class membership. I will definitely investigate this!

The Ironborn habit is not as easy to establish as I hoped. Various projects around the house distract me from my workouts.

Today's project was preparing and delivering the first of husband's birthday presents: A roast turkey. It was delicious. :)
