Ranger Hal Earns Some Points

The last couple of challenges, well, I've pretty much stopped doing things after a week or two. Maybe I'd restart midway through the challenge, but the attempt would die again within about a week. So, it's time to try something different.

 

I'm going to earn POINTS! And there will be LOOT!

 

Ok, so I'm a little skeptical about whether this will work. I mean, there's no practical reason why I couldn't just buy the loot for myself. But what I was doing previously clearly wasn't working, so this is worth a shot. And the books I have in mind for loot have been on my want list for months and I haven't done anything about it (maybe I have problems buying things for myself that I don't actually need).

 

On to the details:

 

Daily Tasks (1 point each)

Morning prayers
Evening prayers
Brush and floss teeth in the evening
Walk 1 mile in the morning
Do the dishes after dinner
Evening workout (1 round min) or walk or yardwork (20 min)
Tidy or clean for 5 minutes
 
Bonus Tasks
10 points for getting my truck an oil change (it's way overdue)
50 points for getting my old HSA money transferred to the new one (I'm paying a monthly fee to keep it where it is)
5 points for every time I fill my yard waste bin at least 3/4 full (points awarded when pickup occurs, every two weeks)
5 points for hiking more than 5 miles (max 2 times per week, does not include climbing trips)
5 points for putting together my new bookshelf
5 points for putting the books from the office onto a bookshelf so they're not in boxes in the living room anymore
5 points for setting up an eye appointment (routine check)
1 point for going to weeknight rigging practice (also counts as evening workout/walk/yardwork)
 
Additional Bonus Tasks (added after challenge start)

1 point for sealing the stitching on my new hiking boots

1 point for treating hiking clothing with permethrin (insect repellent)

5 points for each window screen built (or repaired)

I will order a loot item as soon as I have enough money "saved" up

I set the point system up so if I did all the daily tasks, I should be pretty close to getting the first book in just over two weeks. If I do some bonus tasks, it will be sooner. I reserve the right to add more bonus tasks as things come up, especially if I don't want to do them. I doubt I will get even halfway through the loot list during this challenge, but hey, if this works, I can keep going with the loot next challenge!

 

I was going to wait until Week 1 to start gaining points, but why wait to start working on good habits. So, points count starting Week 0, Tuesday evening.

Week 0, Tuesday - 5 points

Evening walk (to pick nettles for the food thing I was making)

Dishes

Tidy/Clean

Evening prayers

Brush teeth

 

I put nettles in a chicken recipe that called for spinach. It was okay, but not great. If I do nettles again, I think I will chop them up, or at least pull the leaves off the stems. I left them connected and they ended up kind of stringy and difficult to cut up.

 

Week 0, Wednesday - 3 points

Evening "walk"

Brush teeth

 

I had to get up early for a dentist appointment, so no morning walk. SAR kind of derailed the evening (getting home at midnight will do that), but that's okay. I got some good exercise out of it!

Week 0, Thursday - 4 points

I got up later than usual in the morning (recovering from the late SAR night), so no morning walk. The crevasse rescue test (on a grassy hill, sadly no crevasses involved) was the last class piece of my alpine climbing class! Now I just need to get out on some climbs!

I'm discovering that I've lost a bunch of upper body/arm strength. Kind of sad about this. I guess that's something to work on.

I also sent in the paperwork for transferring my HSA. I'm not sure when I'm going to add the points for that. It turned out to be easier than I expected, but it could be up to 8 weeks before I find out if it actually worked.

I missed brushing my teeth. And I've been doing so well remembering to do that. On the yardwork front, I'm going to get my points for filling up the yard waste bin (but not until next week when it gets emptied). It's kind of sad how quickly the bin fills up and how much space I still have to clear of blackberries.

I find  it ironic that what many people consider a wonderful fruit, we in the NW consider a weed😃 If only blackberries would stay in their lane, we'd appreciate them more. I  have a bunch of blackberries to clear out at my house too.

If you want to come dig some up to take home, you're welcome to them! Mine are the Himalayan version, but the Evergreen ones taste better. Both are invasive and happy to take over any open space around here.

I live in an apartment, so this will be an awkward and prickly roommate situation, but on the plus side, blackberries.

So the hike wasn't exactly 5 miles, but it was supposed to be and was only cut short because I decided to turn around and go to a SAR mission that was spinning up, and there was lots of elevation gain. So I feel good about counting it.

Edit to add: It was a long day (church, followed by a wedding) and I was thinking maybe I'd skip all the stuff (well, except maybe brushing teeth), but then I walked into the kitchen and did the (very few) dishes without really even thinking about it, and then I followed it up with evening prayers. It made me happy that this just sort of happened.

I ordered my first loot! When I contacted my local bookstore to order, it was a little more expensive than I expected (there was probably a small shipping charge because they have to order it), so I don't quite have enough points yet (114 points required), but I ordered it anyway. They said it will come in early next week and I should have enough points by then!
