The Jedi Valkyrie Chronicles: Novice

I am worthless and I am nothing, Nesta nearly said. She wasn’t sure why the words bubbled up, pressing on her lips to voice them. I hate everything that I am. And I am so so tired. I am tired of wanting to be anywhere but my own head.

(I’m trying my best not to spoil anything for those who haven’t yet read ACOSF, but no promises)

 

I’ve been thinking about doing a Nesta themed challenge series for a while. Nesta is a character from ACOTAR that I didn’t really love originally - she comes across as abrupt, selfish, closed off, and uncaring. Over time, however, I’ve come to love Nesta- not only because she’s so much more than that, but because there’s such a core of her that’s so much like me. Nesta doesn’t believe in her own worth, and she holds herself apart from everyone else to prevent herself from being hurt. Even by those who love her the most. She’s self destructive in how she copes with pain, stress, and depression. She emotes with every fiber of her being; love and hate fierce and strong. And she’s intensely lonely. 

 

Nesta Archeron Deserved Better — Nesta, Emerie & Gwynn - The Valkyries  born...

 

Over the course of the series, a goal of hers is to resurrect a female warrior clan called the Valkyrie. She and her two best friends, one of whom is helping a scholar with research on the Valkyrie, are being trained by two of the most highly ranked warriors in their court (I’m trying to describe this without spoiling anything major so sorry it’s a bit vague!).

 

My next series is going to be focused on the three stages of Valkyre training: Novice, Blade, and Valkyrie. Obviously, I’m starting as a Novice. I’m hoping I can also grow both physically and emotionally - like Nesta does. 

 

My last challenge did a great job helping me kick start a new workout routine, as well as a regular cooking routine and the addition of fruits and veggies to my meals. 

 

Some of the things I really want to tackle this challenge are mental health related. I definitely need to find better coping mechanisms for life than binge eating, and want to improve my self worth with affirmations and such. But I want to keep being healthy where I can. 

 

As I have for the last several challenges, I’ll be doing a point based system. I’ll have healthy behaviors and every time I do them, I get a point. And there are different levels of success based on how many points I get. Because the goal is to work on and improve positive behaviors!

 

Bonus points are things that may come up or may not circumstantially. I’m going to come up with a way to use these, but I can’t count on them or add them to my count for the week.

 

The following are my goals:

 

Daily Affirmations

I was doing daily affirmations and was doing a really great job doing them daily but got out of the habit the last time I travelled. So I’m going to focus on writing positive affirmations every morning to start my day off well. They did a great job of helping me change my mindset. 

 

The goal is to do this 5-7 days a week, each day I do so will be (1) point!

 

Regular Workouts

There are any number of things that will count as a workout. Climbing, Playing Beatsaber, doing Body Project workouts with my mom - or anything else that uses enough energy that I deem hardcore enough to class as a workout. I’ve been fairly good about this recently, but I need to stay on the ball. I’d actually do more, but I’m trying not to overdo it with my ankle still a bit iffy. Right now, staying the course is the goal with workouts.  

 

I’ll be hoping to work out 3-5 days a week. Each workout will be (1) point.

 

Healthy Meals & Snacks

Since I’ve managed to get back into the habit of having fruits and veggies with my meals, I’m going to just focus on building healthy meals and snacks every day. This opens things up a little so that if I’m out and about I can do healthy options and it still work for me. 

 

The average here will be 2 healthy meals in a day, with 3 being ideal (I need to eat more breakfast). While I don’t snack every day, I do most days so that will be something else to improve upon. Each healthy meal is (1) point.

 

Stretch Daily

Since I climb quite frequently, flexibility is important. I’ve mostly gotten into the habit of doing basic, bare minimum stretching. So now it’s time to up things a little bit and focus on stretches that will help me with climbing. I found this list of yoga poses that are good for climbers and I can use that to help me build my flexibility.

 

The goal is 5-7 times per week, making sure that I’m actually spending some time stretching and improving flexibility. Each session is (1) point.

 

Bonus: Trying A New Hobby

One thing I struggle with a lot is finding things to do. If I’m not working, I end up just.. Cleaning or cooking or otherwise doing things that take energy away from me and don’t give me energy. 

 

However, with the amount of time I’ve spent depressed and without ANY energy whatsoever, I have a hard time knowing what hobbies I have that interest me. So I’m going to attempt to try some things outside of my standard set of reading and playing with my phone. 

 

Some ideas include:

  • Writing fanfiction or my novel
  • Drawing
  • Crafting
  • Watching Makeup Youtube Videos
  • Trying out makeup looks

 

Each time I try a hobby activity I’ll get (1) bonus point.

 

Bonus 2: Journaling as a Coping Mechanism

This is something else that may or may not come up. But I suspect that there’s going to be a lot going on mentally for a while for me. And I’ve found that journaling works well. So my goal is that when I’m feeling upset, angry, frustrated, etc. I’ll sit down and journal my feelings a bit. Hopefully I can do this over time and process my feelings better. I have a lot of unprocessed feelings and things right now and need to deal with them.

 

Each time I journal as a way of processing feelings, I’ll get (1) bonus point.

 

Scoring

Good - 150 (5 Days of affirmations weekly, 4 stretch days weekly, 3 workouts weekly, and avg 2-3 healthy meals/snacks a day)

Better - 180 (6 Days of affirmations weekly, 5 stretch days weekly, 4 workouts weekly, and avg 3 healthy meals/snacks a day)

Best - 215 (7 Days of affirmations weekly, 6 stretch days weekly, 5 workouts weekly, and avg 3-4 healthy meals/snacks a day)

 

So that’s that. My Valkyre Novice 1 challenge. I’m excited to see how this goes and what I can do with it.

Hi! I now have a new series on my book list. Thanks! :) Honestly a bunch of things you said about Nesta resonate with me (things I have been more self aware of lately and have been bugging me). I am mad curious.

 

I am going to follow along; our goals share some similarities. And I am all for the hobby exploration!!! :D hobbies are probably my favourite thing.

Okay so the first 3 (and a half) books in the series are about her sister Feyre. The fourth book swaps over to her :) If you like fantasy and teen lit, then ALL of Sarah J. Maas's books will be amazing for you.

 

Yeah Nesta is someone I never realized related to so much. She's very different from how I see myself but so many of our core motivations, pains, and everything else are very similar. I aspire to be like other characters in the series, but Nesta is who I see in the mirror.

 

I'll go return the favor then! I love meeting new people here!

 

Yeah when I get depressed I go into shutdown mode. I read and play with my phone and that's about it. I don't even read new things, I read the same few book series over and over and eat waaaaay too much food (yay for stress eating as a coping mechanism???) But I love wearing makeup and I enjoy crafting and even baking. I need to give myself time to enjoy those things and not just split my time between working, taking care of the house, or staring at my phone.

I don't even know if I get depressed but I also just go into shutdown mode. For me its basically the empty. Yeah I just hit a point where I have negative emotional energy and I just want to shut down and hide in my fantasy novels. If I'm not, I feel like I should be "productive" (work or chores) so I have to force myself to take time for myself!

Hi Jedi! I like your goals ^_^ 

 

I've been trying to do more hobbies too! For me it's less finding new hobbies, and more rediscovering hobbies I used to love before I got the good 'ol Depresso. I've been reading books lately which is amazing! It's been so long since I've been able to just sit down and read a book. So, I think I will also make a note of this series to check out once I'm done with the series I'm in the middle of  👀

This series is what has gotten me through several incidents of the ol Depresso. The first book is like a retelling of the fairy tale East of the Sun and West of the Moon

Yeah, I discovered recently that I'm not a PC game person but I love the Playstation (I have the 2 and 4).  Or that after minoring in art, I had to take a looooooong break from drawing and painting because of school. 

 

I'm also a perfectionist so hobbies are hard for me - I get frustrated when I'm "bad" at something (art/drawing, knitting, ect)

 

Yeah it's like Beauty and the Beast but with a part 2! I discovered the original fairy tale as a kid in the book "East" by Edith Patteau. I think I've read that book like 15 times 😅

How was minoring in art? I'm obsessed with art classes lolll I took a 1 year art fundamentals program in college (Canada college is different than US college). It was so much fun. We had sculpture (3D design), 2D design (illustration-esque), life drawing, painting, perspective (architectural). Not gonna lie.. If I had enough money to take a year off I would totally do it again... For fun lol

I actually mostly enjoyed it :) My college experience was a little bit weird. I was originally going to be a Computer Science major, but I took Drawing 1 as a humanities elective. It was so much fun that I decided to minor in art - focusing on the "computer art" classes. It was more theoretical art than like digital drawing or anything, but I did all sorts of cool projects (for example, I had to do an ASMR style story reading where I read part of a book and put sound effects in the background, one project was a music video whose vibe didn't fit the vibe of the chosen song, stuff like that). I also had to take another drawing and a painting course. Drawing 2 was okay but painting 1 had an obnoxious professor. So it really depended on the professor with me. (Ultimately I majored in English Lit when I failed out of Computer Science)

 

I've considered going back for a master's degree, but my undergrad was a miserable experience and my boss gives me access to Industry Standard certifications for free as long as I do them on my own time. It doesn't seem worth the money and time at the moment!

That's neat! I wish I'd had more freedom in my education. 

 

Yeah, they're really high quality marketing certifications so I can't complain really. And they're really good content too.

I mostly enjoyed it, but it burned me out on art for quite a while so I don't know if I'd do it again. My other option for minoring was astronomy. I probably would do that if I could redo it.

My final day on "vacation" and my final day of week 0 is here! Yesterday I went climbing with my  dad, sister, and brother.  I was the only one who didn't send a wall 😕 But I worked hard and got really far... all of them are in better physical shape than me so I can't really be too surprised. I ended up buying myself a chalk bag while I was there and now I just need a carabiner to keep it on my harness when I climb.

 

I've been eating super well the past few days, just because my parents tend to have more healthy food available. I already have a grocery list for next week though so I'm in good shape there.  Hopefully there will be time tomorrow for me to do all the meal prep I need to do. 

 

I'm also super excited because I got a fiverr order! I'm so excited and will be working on that today.  Hopefully it goes well. 

 

This trip has been amazing for my mental health. I'm on a decent schedule and I got to be in a different physical environment than I have in a long while. And I'm really excited to go home and kick start myself.

Yeah I had a weird assortment. My major wasn't bad but some of the GenEds had obnoxious folks.

It got me out of the house!! Which honestly was vital. I needed a break because we only have one car around and we are really far from anything. 

 

I know :) my family was super encouraging the whole time and it was overall a ton of fun. It's not a hobby I ever would have thought of for myself but I'm so glad I started!!

Happy Monday everyone!

 

I'm safely home, and I got a LOT done yesterday. I managed to cook a dinner for myself and my husband, prep both breakfasts and lunches for him for the week, NOT make a mess of the kitchen, finish my first fiverr order, and catch up with my husband :) Super productivity!

 

The other day I rediscovered a group called GMB.io who focus on functional movement. As a climber, that seems like it'll be really helpful. I've been doing their basic stretching routine for the past two mornings and it actually wears me out?? It's great. I also am going to try one of their foundational movements today during my workout time, then do their 30 minute mobility routine to see how that goes. I'm super tired so that'll get me moving without wrecking me. 

 

I missed the mark on my 7:30am wakeup call, but I did get up at 8 and was on my computer for work by 9, which is a major win in my book. The only thing I wanted to do that I didn't was put some makeup on. So I'm feeling pretty solid today.

I hate mornings, have I mentioned that before?  I'm not a morning person (or a night owl tbh) and before I get some delicious caffeine in my system I'm half dead. Grey clouds don't help either.

 

But I made bread in my new dutch oven yesterday and that was AMAZING. It's a delicious crusty bread with a gorgeous crust. I had a couple of small pieces last night with butter and a drizzle of honey. 

 

Today Mr. Right and I are going climbing, and tomorrow we're going strawberry picking after I get off work. I got his mom's recipe for strawberry freezer jam, and I'll be making that this weekend. 

 

Wish me luck today - I'm completely brain fried 😅 (which may be from my sleep aid...)
