Jupiter Re-organizes

Recommended Posts

Hey nerds, I'm back for another challenge after missing the last one. Life just got busy and a bunch of things happened around the same time frame and it was just a lot. Anyway, it's slightly less busy now so I'm going to try to be here a little more. My main focus this challenge will be re-organizing and moving things around to (hopefully) better fit my schedule and energy levels. To hopefully help with all of this, I'm trying to set up a bullet journal. For the last several months I've split my tracking and logging etc. between a day planner, various apps and a journal, and lately it's been driving me crazy. It's gotten to the point where I've stopped tracking at all because it's all so spread out. So, I'm consolidating and plan to log everything in a bullet journal instead (I'd love some tips if anyone has any). Hopefully once I get that set up I'll have a better idea of what I've got and where I want to go from here. Until then though I'll stick with tracking a few small goals so I don't lose the habits I've already (sort of) made. Anyway, goals:

- Exercise 10 to 20 minutes a day

- Eat one fruit and/or veggie once a day

- Write and/or revise 1 hour a day

- Post/comment once a week

I think that's it for now. Happy challenge, nerds. :)

I'm still trying to figure out my own journal. But I'm here for the ride nonetheless. :)

BuJo-ers unite :). I'm glad to see you back.

What would you like to track in your bullet journal? For me it's like a set of todo lists (monthly, weekly and daily), and calendar (monthly, daily, "later") that also gets filled out at in the todo list. I'm currently also logging my weigth in my daily list. For habit tracking, I just use the weekly todo, since it takes up less space that way. I'd say start with a monthly spread and weekly spreads, and adapt from there. There are also some subreddits (e.g. /r/bulletjournal and /r/basicbulletjournals) that you can use for inspiration. I do not add drawings and artsy things yo my BuJo, but if you enjoy drawing it's a  great space for that as well.

Okay, it's time for a recap of week 1:

- Exercise 10 to 20 minutes a day - I exercised 5 days for around 20 minutes each, and missed two days. The first day I had a doctor's appointment and then I went to see a friend (whom I haven't seen in almost two years, so I was pretty excited. Her twins have grown so big and they're running around like little Tasmanian devils already). The second day was over the weekend after a huge cleaning spree followed by a short game day with some other friends. By the time I got home, even though it was early, I crashed. (After years of having no social life (aside from D&D in the last year or so) I'm actually becoming a Person Who Socializes. Who would've thought?)

- Eat one fruit and/or veggie once a day - Fruit was mostly a no-go. I only had some fruit once, though I did have more veggies. I'm still mostly eating takeout, but I've been trying to add more veggies whenever there is an option for it. So I'll take that as a win.

- Write and/or revise 1 hour a day - This has been going better. I missed 2 days because of social stuff but otherwise I've been mostly keeping up with it. I think what is helping is switching my exercise and writing times. I used to exercise first thing because if I didn't, then it never got done, though that's thankfully become less of an issue now. Between that and everything else I try to squeeze in during the afternoons, writing somehow fell to the end of my day, which is when I tend to be the most brain dead. No wonder I haven't been getting anything done. But now I've moved writing up to first thing after I leave work, and it's been helping. I finished a short story last week and it didn't take me nearly as long as before, so yay.

- Post/comment once a week - Did both today.

Not bad for the first week. :) Also, setting up a bullet journal is way more fun than I thought it would be. A little more time-consuming than I thought, but fun. :)

I'm putting everything in. I added a monthly and weekly spread for tracking appointments and such, and a daily spread for tracking every day tasks. I also added a habit tracker, a food log, a writing project tracker and a writing log...so yeah, everything LOL. I'll definitely check those links out, thanks. :)

Time for a recap of week 2:

- Exercise 10 to 20 minutes a day - All 7 days, including the weekend, despite all the craziness.

- Eat one fruit and/or veggie once a day - Fruit was a no-go again. Had veggies for only 3 days, but that's better than nothing.

- Write and/or revise 1 hour a day - Missed 3 days, mostly over the weekend.

- Post/comment once a week - Done.

Not terrible for week 2. Some drama below, feel free to skip if you like:

Spoiler

So a friend of mine gave me her old mattress/bedframe. It looked great and it seemed comfy when I checked it out at her place, and I thought I was going to love it. Yeah, not so much. When it was first put in, I really freaked out. It’s a big change for me, but I thought after I got over the freak out it would be okay. My last bed I had for over 20 years, and even that I received as a hand-me-down, so I didn’t think much about taking my friend’s old bed.

It was awful, even post-freak-out. The mattress topper was too cushy and too hot and the mattress was hard as a rock and hurt to sleep on. I got maybe 3 hours of sleep and was miserable the first night. I don’t think I like the bedframe anymore either. It’s not as functional as it seemed at first. There are things I like about it—it’s made of dark wood and I like the pattern on the headboard. But said headboard has shelves on either side of it, which means it’s 12 inches thick, not counting the space in between the headboard and the mattress, which means it’s more like 15 inches (I measured) and pushes the bed out too far, eliminating a bunch of needed space. It also has drawers underneath. Two of them I can’t even use because other things are in the way and I keep stubbing my toes on them if I’m anywhere near the bed. I can’t just stand next to it. I have to stand well away and lean over it just to get in and out. After doing this a few times I was like no. I’m done.

And I was dumb and got rid of my old bed already, so now I’m sleeping on the couch. I just feel stupid, because I should have thought of all of this beforehand and I didn’t. And I feel terrible because my friend and her husband brought everything over and helped set everything up and spent all this time and effort on it, and I’m getting rid of it pretty much as soon as I can replace it.

And that's all I've got.

Bullet journals are fun! Since i discovered the sorcery of bullet journals I've gravitated to/from using the system. Definitely feeling you on using too many different methods to track things (apps, multiple journals, etc).

Also there are a ton of really artistic spreads and so much you can do with it. Personally I find the daily/weekly spreads are too much effort, so I stick to just a monthly/challenge goals page. But the nice part is the system is super flexible and there are so many ideas out there that you can keep trying until you find a method that works best for you!

edit: Bummer to hear about the bed. I hope you find something that works better for you. Can imagine it's disappointing but also sleep and being comfortable is super important.

Having a proper bed it critical.  I used to have a mattress that was just absolutely wrong for me and after a while it started to make my shoulder feel really bad.  After swapping that one out for a better one has made huge differences in both sleep quality and reducing unexplained joint pain

Yeah, it's really nice that it's a flexible system, but it's also sort of a downside, too because there are just so many options LOL. I can't tell you how many YouTube videos I watched on how to make different spreads (and on all the different ways to make the same spreads). There are so many LOL. I think I'm finding my way through it though. I think I prefer a more minimalist approach, and I actually really like the weekly/daily spreads. They're a little bit of extra work, but they seem to be working for me so far. :)

Yeah, very true. I did order a new mattress and so far this one's been working out better.

Oh, ouch, I'm glad the new bed worked out better. I ended up just biting the bullet and getting a new mattress, and I think I like it so far. Definitely better than my friend's mattress, that's for sure.

So, didn't mean to disappear last week. I meant to post but I felt pretty brain dead then, so I'll do a recap of week 3 and 4 together (has it been that long already?):

- Exercise 10 to 20 minutes a day - Week 3 was 7/7, week 4 was 6/7. Huh. I was pretty sure I did less than that, but that's what my habit tracker is showing me, so it must be right. ;)

- Eat one fruit and/or veggie once a day - Week 3, zero on the fruit, and week 4 was 3/7. Veggie intake was better, with 6/7 days for both weeks. Still eating mostly takeout, so veggie intake is small, but at least it's there.

- Write and/or revise 1 hour a day - Week 3, only 3/7. That was a pretty bad week. Week 4 was better, with 5.5/7. I've been really trying to work on building this habit back up and getting my discipline back. I want to finally get stuff done again and stop feeling like a failure as a writer. It's just been such a struggle. Still, I finally finished writing/revising another short story, so that gives me two that I can start submitting to magazines. Now I'm working on an older short story (that's turning into more of a novelette) that I let sit for a while, and I finally went back to my novel (again). I'm starting back at the beginning again, but I'm not making any major changes, just some very light edits while I reacquaint myself with the story, and then I can get back to chapter 3, which is where I stopped before.

- Post/comment once a week - Week 3, I made a comment or two, but obviously no posts. Week 4, I made some comments and posted. :)

Overall, not too bad. Life and work things aren't too bad either, surprisingly. Work is still frustrating, of course, but not as crazy busy as it has been. Life things...I just bit the bullet and bought a new mattress. It's really comfortable at times, but not at others, which makes it hard to sleep. I'm hoping I just need a little more time to break it in. I'd hate to return it because I do like it...when it's comfortable. Let's see, one of my friends, the one who moved back into town, is starting a new online business, so I did some stuff to help her with that. Had a doctor's appointment and did bloodwork. My doctor was impressed with the results, she said everything looked really good, which kind of surprised me, but I'll take it. And somehow I ended up washing a pair of scissors in a load of laundry. Still not quite sure how that happened. That about sums up my last two weeks. Now I'm off to attempt some light yoga followed by zoning out in front of the TV.

Is it the end of the challenge already? Ugh, I haven't gotten any sleep the last few days. My brand new mattress sank three inches and has become painful to sleep on so right now I'm on the couch. Which is not at all comfortable when lying down and it's making me rethink my furniture choices. The guy at the store said the mattress is defective and they're sending me a new one but they can't deliver it until the end of the week. So this week should be interesting if nothing else. My brain is in a fog right now, but I will try to do a challenge recap later in the week.

Living life as a Druid is about walking with the beasts. It's about being scared, looking your fears in the eyes and going on anyway. Dread doesn't go away, you just learn to know it. It's still a beast, it still has fangs, but you walk among it.

Thanks. Unfortunately the replacement isn't much better right now. One end has already sunk in an inch within one day of delivery (I've never had a pillow top mattress before so I don't know if it's supposed to do this or what) and it's a lot firmer than it should be for a medium plush mattress. I've only slept on it for 2 nights and I'm exhausted and my back hurts. I'm just so frustrated. I don't even know what to do at this point.

Yeah, the good news is that I can return it, I just need to figure out what to replace it with. I need to do some more research, figure out all my questions and talk to the guy at the store and see what he says.

Researching mattresses is so exhausting and mind-numbing. After a while they all start to look the same. And I have to make sure I'm getting the right foundation/base set-up, so it feels like double the research. I've had two of my friends suggest a Temper-Pedic though in the last few days, so I need to add that brand to my research. I'm just afraid it will be too expensive. Also thinking of something cooking-related for my next challenge. We'll see.
