Darkfoxx 76: The Basics - Again

Oof for the hobbling.

Yay for the Louvre!

I’m excited. This museum focuses on the history of art - from the time people had enough free time to sit down and make pretty beads - all the way up to the future of art - with a particular focus on this part of the world. Super cool stuff & usually some sort of more European special exhibit that’s more painting focused. The last time I was here, they had a really cool exhibit on Marie Antoinette as painted by different artists, with recreations or straight showings of items and room bits.

The gift shop is killer, too. Bought camel hair scarves for my bestie and I a couple years ago and they’re super soft. I’m hoping for postcards to send the little pen pal this trip.

Second PM update:

I picked a workout program on PopSugar and have set a scheduled reminder for M, W, Th, F at 3:00 pm starting the Monday after we get home and stretching till almost the end of September. I think this should be a nice way to get back to the scheduling that works for me. I’m skipping the Tuesdays since I generally like to go to my Functional class that evening. If I don’t go, there are 999999 other videos on the app - including that demon 10 minute barre class that destroyed my butt and legs in a way I enjoyed a couple years ago.

On to contemplating menu options and continuing the debate with self regarding pulling the trigger on ordering linen for a clothing project.

The dilemma:

1. I don’t want to buy a bunch of fabric that’s just going to sit there.

2. If I buy the linen in the color I want (indigo blue), it’s $12 a yard (I need 4 yards)

3. There’s a couple varieties on sale in bleached linen (off white) that the company says takes dye well

4. I know nothing about dyeing, but am kind of fascinated by the colors natural dyes make - I think I may actually be able to do avocado skin; it’s not one of the colors I wear, but it’s a pretty peachy pinky color, and you don’t need mordant.

5. And then there’s 100% picking a pattern … Do I go with the historical linen shirt, petticoat, chemise or historical-inspired cami? Or, do I go with one of the more modern (and by more modern, I mean either actually modern or based on a 40s or 50s pattern) dresses I have on my list? Or, something else?

6. If I grab one of the on sale weights, I should probably grab a couple yards of the two other weights for comparison …

Or, I could re-try the local shop I like  … some day … to see what they’ve got these days.

Decisions, decisions.

Today

The Louvre was just as good as I remembered :)

Took some crappy shots of things y’all may find of interest:

1. I love the way the museum copywriter describes writing - this was from the pre-museum exhibit comparing items - in this case writing instrument holders - throughout time and cultures. Also shown were things like gold funerary masks, funerary relics, statues depicting motherhood, prayer & dance, ewers and bowls.

2. Clay bulla and tokens from the early human stage of development - thought to be one of the first means of recording transactions, Iran, 3100-2800 BCE.

3. An example (item not pictured) of things found locally and exhibited as part of the global fabric of life (not in a separate ‘this is from the middle East’ room or exhibition).

4. A piece of the Book Of The Dead proving cats will be cats, no matter the century.

5. My favorite dragon love, which is consequently the only one of its kind to have survived from pre-imperial China. 475-221 BCE.

6. Frieze from a Christian monastery found in the UAE. 500-800.

7. A milestone on the road to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, 700-900.

8. One of the windows overlooking a calligraphy wall in the courtyard.

9. Christian gospels in Old Church Slavonic, the oldest k own written Slavic language. Turkey, copied 1456.

10. The Sutra Of The Perfection Of Wisdom, India, 1191.

11. One of my other favorite pieces: some dudes hoard of cash stashed on a trade route some time during the early Islamic period. Oman, 750-1200.

12. A “marvelous” cat incense burner from the Middle Ages. Iran-ish, 1000-1100.

13. Astronomicum Caesareum, 1st Ed. Germany 1540. The paper cutting on this is phenomenal. This room is full of celestial and terrestrial maps and we love it.

14. Famous Washington portrait fraught with symbolism.

15. Love the lighting in this Napolean portrait.

16. An artsy shot of the canopy covering the courtyard.

Post museum, we gamed and then went for an accidental crazy brunch extravaganza for dinner. We only meant to have nice Chinese - aaaand then it was a crazy - and crazy delicious - table side buffet. Was good but we may also die. 😂

Aaaaaand I forgot to update again. SMH.

I’m home and pup-snuggled. Visited my kitchen for the last two days and I’m happy for it.

Yoga+ starts Monday.

Have mostly replaced my YT binges with Stardew Valley - trading one time suck for another.

My iPad apparently has not charged for the 2.5 days since I’ve been home and is just about dead. #goodtimes

More in-depth updating when i have the charge for it.

Saturday

Took Odin in to the boarders’ vet to check out what looks like an angry - scrape? Burn? On his chest. Glad it wasn’t her particular go-to of fungus; looks like it’s some sort of scab that’s slowly falling off. Totally doesn’t answer what happened in the first place - or why no one seemed to notice for the 3 weeks he was there.

Ordered Indian snacks from a new place for lunch - and miracle of all miracles, managed to eat a reasonable amount of food. Indian chicken wings are bomb.

Watched Rememberance.

Gamed in the morning & after getting back from the vet.

I’ve booked in my 4 yoga classes for next week and have ordered some muslin fabric so I can make some mockups while I decide what exactly I want to sew finished garment-wise.

Sunday

A return to our normal Sunday schedule after a stop off at the alcohol store. We’re moving up in the world: we now have gin & tonics in a can and Mike’s Hard Seltzer. Still no IPAs.

Had lunch at one of the new spots at the mall - super can’t spell or say the name - suffice it to say, it’s Italian, some of the letters in the logo are backwards, and our meal was delicious. I had some sort of baby kale & ascerbic citrus ranch salad with sweetly sauced prawns; DH had mozzarella-stuffed arancini & short rib risotto. Yum.

Had some of my batch cooked leftovers for dinner & watched a movie.

Tomorrow I’ve got some sort of toast breakfast, my morning yoga + walk to and from, batch cooked leftovers for lunch, 3pm 20-minute something, and something veg-heavy planned for dinner.

Monday

Back to my regularly scheduled yoga with a slow flow class and walk to and from. In the 3 weeks I’ve been gone, progress has been made on the grocery opening up in the next tower, the fancy af hookah store opened, and one of my favorite moderately healthy spots closed down.

Grabbed a falafel wrap and some beet apple juice from my favorite vegan spot for a lunch treat.

3pm came, and despite not getting my scheduled reminder, I cued up a 20-minute PopSugar workout and did that.

Dinner was great - was not the healthy meal I was intending … but mostly because my brain short circuited when miso butter was mentioned. Of *course* that isn’t going to be a healthy meal .. even if it is vegetarian.

Sidebar: I want to bathe in miso butter.

Dogs got some snuffle mat goodness for dinner, I’ve done all my game chores (and then some) for the day, and we are catching up on our latest Netflix show - Cherry … something something .. flavor. It’s pretty good, and we are almost through.

Up tomorrow: Coffee catchup (online), Functional fitness class, something else probably healthy for dinner, and the pups have frozen foods night. I’ve also got to make another picture for my little pen pal because the first package got lost in the mail.

Whoa there. You can't just casually mention something that sounds like absolute genius and not  give us details!

The Great Reading Thread of 2024

“I've always believed that failure is non-existent. What is failure? You go to the end of the season, then you lose the Super Bowl. Is that failing? To most people, maybe. But when you're picking apart why you failed, and now you're learning from that, then is that really failing? I don't think so." - Kobe Bryant, 1978-2020. Rest in peace, great warrior.

It was, I had leftovers tonight, and *drool*

3 Tbsp. softened butter

2 Tbsp. white miso

Whites of 1-2 scallions, minced

All smushed together into a flavor bomb. I put generous amounts on some baked sweet potato fries after the halfway flip and it was *chef’s kiss*. I’ll be slathering this on a steak in the near future.

Tuesday

Catch up with my ladies over the Internets, DH came home early due to heat exhaustion (he’s fine), lunch was leftover risotto with some chicken, napped and blew off yoga - also didn’t make dinner - but I did manage to get married in my game, so I’ve got that going for me.

And DH brought home the printed version of my latest arts for the pen pal, and dang - it looks almost professional. Sure, I basically redrew a picture I saw on Pinterest, but still … looks good if I do say so myself.

Made my legal everything but the bagel seasoning and had that with avocado & sautéed spinach on toast for breakfast.

Made the pups a full complement of frozen foods.

Caught up on my games.

Lunch was leftover coconut curry veggie noodles.

Did my PopSugar 20 minute tabata workout.

Moar gaming, including talking a depressed alcoholic off the edge and into therapy - and counseling a PTSD sufferer to not be a dick in his marriage.

Dinner was a bowl of leftover carbs: potatoes, corn, miso butter, hot sauce, scallions.

Continuing on with The Nevers this evening.

Signed up for next week’s yoga classes.

Friday

Vinyasa class with my customary walks to and from, sushi from a new delivery spot that wasn’t a million dollars and was actually good from a spot with at least Katsu on the menu. Watched … well … ummmmm …. Whatever it was I enjoyed it at the time but have absolutely forgotten it. I feel like maybe it just came out and was on HBO+?

Saturday

Socials with friends! In a restaurant! With their big girl who would 100% rather have lamb than veggies, and screw dessert. She did fantastic and then they all came back to our place where our good boy was a damn good boy. Both pups got an ostrich trachea braid shoved through a Quizzle bone with a cap of frozen cheese where I couldn’t get the braid all the way through. Mr. Good Boy did not scream at the husband of the couple - who he used to scream at constantly. The 1 year old was not a fan of animals that react back (her cat ignores her, even if her fur is being pulled), but will get there. She got lots of surreptitious licks from both pups. It was hilarious the few times Odin managed to sneak up and give her a nice big lick on the leg before she noticed.

Watched a body switch teen movie featuring Vince Vaughn as a teenage girl/serial killer. It was cute with some nice novel deaths.

Sunday

I Fin-a-damn-ly got my IUD switched. Mental note: do not go to any medical center but my normal one. I didn’t think they had a gyn yet given the pandemic, but it turns out they do - and she started in June. Whoo. It’s so nice seeing a doctor who not only didn’t make me re-justify why i wanted an IUD, would just put the damn thing in instead of hemming and hawing and trying to make me come back during my period like the last woman (eew. Not my thing.), was gentle and explained every step to alleviate my anxiety, and who didn’t treat me like a damn criminal. Funny the difference a modern times UK-trained doctor vs a 90s Bible Belt doctor will make you feel (+25 or so years age, but still … there’s definitely some trauma there).

Anyways. That’s done for another 5 years and she estimates I’ll need 1 more before I’m finally done with this chapter of my life. Then it’s on to the scary bit.

Was feeling run down after and had a damn epiphany about one of the ways I’m unkind to myself - unkind is an understatement. One of the ways in which I use wrong shit I know is wrong I was taught as a child and teen as a bludgeon with which to beat myself mercilessly. #funtimes That’s always a fun ride when DH is driving down the road. Led to a good car chat while we waited for me to regain composure before stepping into the elevator.

Napped with Odin while he gamed and then took Freya in for a surprise vet visit. It seems all DH’s girls had vagina issues Sunday. Poor baby has vaginitis and came home with pills. Super glad he took her on a Daddy pup excursion; I did not want to deal with wrangling Odin. Napping was much better.

Started Doom Patrol and added another episode of The Nevers.

Dinner was 3/4 of a medium tikka pizza with no cheese. Probably a bit too much, but I only had a black olive achma for breakfast and a slice of butter toast with Vegemite for lunch. We were both starving to death by the time pizza rolled to the door.

Also mailed the package for my little pen pal with much drama. They wanted me to put my sister’s phone number on the package so they could call her if there was an issue (here, you 100% have to have your number on the package or you’re shit out of luck if you want to actually receive said package). Ummmm … no. I don’t think she’d be comfortable with that, so I put my number just so they’d have something.

Monday

Slow flow class was good - the walk was humid as all get out and brutal - and I was starving by the time it was over, so I took myself to lunch at the vegan place next to class. My Jungle Bowl was amaze as I’d remembered - quinoa, sweet potato, cherry tomato, mushroom, cashew cheese, kale, pepitas, avocado, parsley, masala chickpeas subbed for the black beans, a vaguely citrus ginger dressing, and added some of their killer probiotic sriracha. Yum. With a matcha lemonade.

Grocery shopped after my large lunch so I’d make good choices.

Attempted to unfuck the bedroom floor with a mixture of vinegar & water, peroxide & dish soap, baking soda and more vinegar water. It smells less like baked-in pee (thanks, Odin, for your terrible sense of aim) and more like vinegar - which I see as an improvement. It’s also at least a little less weirdly slimy for now. I don’t know what I did in the first place to make the floor kinda slimy, but it’s annoying. I’m sure it’s one of the gillion cleaners I’ve hit it with - no idea which one or how to strip that ish out for good.

Fingers crossed the Nature’s Miracle on reorder actually makes it here this time - instead of an empty box.

ooh. My muslin fabric came in the mail today, so I’ll be able to mock something up. Not 100% sure what; maybe the corset I already have a pattern for? I don’t have all the layers I really need for that, but I can make a muslin at least. I may also order the fantail skirt pattern I’ve had my eye on and make a revisit of my Edwardian walking skirt using that - mine turned out nice, but it was too big (probably fits now!), the placket wasn’t right, the seams were a mess, and the closures fell off.

I also picked my crochet thread up to start a project, but it didn’t work with too-large needles and too-thin thread. I need to break down and order either the correct yarn for the job, the correct needle size, or both.

In Red States outside the Bible belt all the things you described are still happening. It's one of the main reasons I never went back to a doctor after the first visit, for the first decade or so after moving here. Judgmental assholes, the lot of them...

I'm glad you found a better doctor you feel comfortable with!

Tuesday

My normal catchup with friends online.

Functional class that murdered my hip flexors.

Wednesday

Woke up kinda hobbled and hella stiff.

Walked to yoga anyways.

Detox class was great and I casually popped up into pincha without the wall or kicking up - like 8 times - and even when I knew all class eyes were on me - and held straight-leg version for over 10 secs.

Geesh. Give a girl some good news about potential Spring plans …

In this class, I came real close to side crow and kiiiiiiiinda got at least the gist of sleeping flamingo before my foot slid off my tricep and down the back of my arm.

I am even more tired now and will be even more hobbled tomorrow.

I still need to do my :20 HIIT - or switch to a barre class.

I’m on track for getting my usual 4 yoga classes in - and barring complete stiffness, I’ll make 1 HIIT class. Maybe I can fit another in Saturday morning before we head out to lunch, so I’ll hit 2 of those workouts.

Thursday

got sidetracked while cutting the pattern for my corset & basting - did not do my workout..

Food was decent.

Friday

another great yoga class + walk -

moar time in solid pincha and a fairly strong class overall, wrist drama notwithstanding.

Basted some more corset panels, progressed in my games, napped with the pups.

Food was also semi-decent; DH was practicing guitar and I was writing recipes, so no dinner was ordered.

Also preregistered for Caaaaaaamp; not sure whether I’ll end up going, but my space has been held.

Saturday

Went to the National Museum to have lunch at a fancy Arabic restaurant - bopped around a bit after and checked out the new exhibit on the Blockade.

Sunday

Picked up the fashion fabric, binding fabric, tying ribbon and grommets for my corset, had a crap lunch at Outback and ate too much club sandwich & fries from Tea Time.

Monday

I’ve finished my corset mockup, tried it on, and am kind of lost on what to fix with the fit. I think I need to make the width a bit bigger, and may need to take some length out. Not entirely sure, and I think I’ll ask one of my Facebook groups for help.

This Cycle is all-of-a-sudden done. I’ll be posting my next Challenge in a few days.

Let’s see how I did this Cycle.

Nutrition

Return to semi-paleo: If by semi, you mean eh … not especially but less rice and pasta, then yes.

Up veggie content: Maybe? I’m always pretty concerned with veggies

Didn’t repurchase cooking oil

Didn’t cut breads at all - I’ve been having Avo toast for breakfast every day

Cut pasta for the most part

Cut rice for the most part

Sorta limited white potatoes

All this while I was at home - I was gone for 19 days of this challenge. \

Physical

Got back to my normal 4x a week yoga schedule when I got back and have tried adding HIIT in with little success.

Dog enrichment meals have been going well, but haven’t been doing too much more than that.

I’ve done some digital art.

Overall a so-so challenge, but that’s ok. Any movement forward is good.
