Shello Sets her Priorities

I am not really doing anything differently this time; I'm just sticking to what works. Except it hasn't been working, but only because life has been busy and getting in the way.  This challenge happens to run during a break in travel.  I jsut got back from a trip to my brother's and the challenge ends right as I leave for the Minnesota State Fair. There are few planned things that get in the way of my goals in between so I'm hoping to buckle down and gain some ground, and lose more than a few pounds on the way.  But it occurred to me that I often try to hit all my goals and sometimes they end up conflicting.  Eat more green category foods or eat more freggies but stay within a deficit.  So I've set some priorities...

I've listed out all the usual goals and prioritized them by the ones that I think have the greatest impact on losing fat and getting healthier.   And since I'm buckling down this challenge why not assign points to them?   I will run my challenge weeks Friday - Thursday  with the exception of a mini week 0.  There are a total of 75 points per week.  I'll track points and my reward, or punishment, will just be posting the percent of total points earned.  

 

Priority #1 - Eat at a Deficit.

I could focus on every other goal but not eat at a deficit and won't lose any weight.  If I did only this and none of the others I'm betting I would.  5 points a day for a deficit.   

I may tweak the calorie target during the challenge but not for the purposes of meeting this goal.  I set my calorie target on the Noom app.  Its a 10 point scale between tortoise and hare.  For week zero I'll set it at 2, but it'll end up around 5 or 6 for the challenge.  

 

 

Priority #2 - Do Some F*cking Cardio

The impact of fitnessing is obvious.  I have the hardest time getting cardio in because I enjoy strength training more.  So I've made cardio a higher priority. Also using the Noom app, it puts half of my exercise calories into my daily calorie allotment.  I don't always use them but they are there if I need them.  4 points a session, including intentional cardio or some functional fitnessing.  The goal is 3 times a week.   

 

 

Priority #3 - Strength Training

For now this is mostly bodyweight or kettlebells and the goal is to bundle it with the cardio at least 2 times a week.  3 points a session. 

 

 

Priority #4 - Eat Good Food

Putting a focus on eating higher quality foods makes it easier to stay within a deficit and is just better overall.  I log food on Noom and it sorts foods into green, yellow, and red foods.  The goal is to keep green foods above 25% and red foods under 50%.  2 points per day, 1 for each goal.  1 bonus point available for keeping green foods above 30% AND red foods 45% or below.  

 

 

Priority #5 - Freggies

This is a separate goal from eating good food.  The Noom app focuses a lot on whole grains and low fat dairy.  It seems to be effective if I have plenty of Noom green foods but not as many freggies but freggies are good too.  But it's not a big deal if I don't hit this all the time.  1 point a day for eating 4 servings of freggies.  

 

 

Priority #6 - Intermittent Fasting

I'd like to get to fasting at least 14 hours a day but I'm also listening to my body and eating when I'm hungry.  I'm slowly retraining myself to break my fast later in the day.   1 point a week for the average time to break fast is at least a minute later than the week before.

Monday - I guess I started the challenge on Monday.  It's the first day on my tracking spreadsheet but it was a travel day as I was returning from my brother's in North Dakota. I did log my food Monday and stayed under maintenance calories.  We had birthday donuts for my nephew so I grabbed one before leaving but I still stopped at McDonald's.  I intended to hold out for dinner but was starving by afternoon.  I made a very bad and stupid mistake though and left my wallet (with key fob attached) on top of my car when stopping for gas so when I stopped for food and gas later at the next stop (100 miles later) and turned off the car since I no longer had a key I couldn't start it.  And without my wallet I had no money and was completely stranded.  It was such a silly mistake and I really beat myself up over it.  But DDG came to my rescue and had to grab my spare key and drive 3 hours to rescue me.   IN the meantime I found spare change in the car and walked to DQ for a small milkshake and fries for lunch.   Once DDG arrived I was stressed and felt terrible.  We went to Culver's just to sit for a bit and shared some cheese curds.  We didn't get in until late because we had another 3 hour drive back.  It was not a great day.  But I finished under maintenance.   No fitnessing, but none scheduled.  100% of calories were red and no freggies in sight.  5 points.

I don't need to do much.  I'm fine with a walk around the neighborhood.  I prioritized it based on impact, not likelihood.

Having only $8 in change in the car helped stay under maintenance!  A small shake and small fries is $6.75!  I paid mostly in dimes.  😇

I lost it at a gas station next to a casino.  I figure if someone found it with the intent to use anything they would have charged something as soon as possible for gas or the casino and I had no charges on any of m cards when I went to cancel them.  And that was at least 2 hours after I lost it.  It either fell off later near the side of the road and it's lost or maybe someone found it and will mail it to me.  I'm hoping for the latter.   For now I've only locked my cards instead of reporting them lost.  Then I can unlock them again if they show up.  In the meantime I can temporarily unlock the card that's attached to everything and buy groceries online or pay with my fitbit and I've got a spare card from DDG for everything else.   It is far better to lose your wallet than your phone.

Mine isn't quite that advanced yet.   But with the phone I could call for my rescue (I don't even know DDGs number if I didn't have my phone), call the gas station where I lost my wallet, and do all the necessary locking of cards, plus entertain myself while I wait.

Tuesday was a better day than Monday but not as much as I had hoped.  I had a migraine start to develop while driving late Monday night.  I didn't wake up with a migraine Tuesday but it perched inside my temple and made itself known off and on throughout the day.  It was a very busy day and the headache did not help at all. I stuck to my planned meals for breakfast and lunch.  Dinner was supposed to be a birthday dinner for Qbert with his gf and DDG in attendance as well.  I have some lambchops I've been saving for this.  But he wanted to invite some friends over and make it more of a party so I pivoted and made a family classic and crowd pleasing dinner.  We call it a pizza roll but it's more like a giant calzone with a braided crust around it.  I had to make a quick run for some groceries but I picked them up curb side to save time.  I whipped up a coffee cake and got that in the oven before making dinner.  The pizza roll doesn't use pre made crust nor does it require from scratch.  But it's basically a pouch that you mix with water and have to knead a bit and wait for it to rise.  I did 2 of those, prepared the filling of lean ground hamburger, garlic, and sauce.  Then prepared and baked each pizza roll.  They never turn out as well as my mom's but everyone seemed to love it.  I ended up having 2 pieces when 1 was likely enough.  But we don't make this often and it's a family favorite.  I do not feel guilty for enjoying a 2nd piece.  The coffee cake was done and cooling by then.  Once I ate I made a powdered sugar glaze for the cake and let it sit until everyone was ready for cake.  It was really a combination of 3 different recipes.  It turned out phenomenally.   I don't regret that either.  I ended up going way over calorie target.  Food quality wasn't bad, red was only 42% but green was too low at only 16%.  I did only get 3 freggies in as well.  I get 1 point for keeping red foods low but no other points.  There was no fitnessing either.  It wasn't scheduled and there would have been no time.  I would have skipped it anyway due to the impending migraine.  

 

DDG was sick and came over late after a nap but I sent him up to bed immediately.   I was done eating by the time he got there so I went up and took care of him and we chatted a bit.  We watched a little Shameless but he was having trouble staying awake.  I watched a little trash tv but I was tired too so I went to sleep early.

Wednesday was a much better day.  I stuck to my logged food during work and even resisted a cookie someone put on my desk.  I really wanted another piece of Qbert's birthday coffee cake so I didn't want to make room for a giant cookie too.  I had an orange for an afternoon snack that satisfied the 4 a day.  Dinner was Qbert's birthday dinner.  I made roasted lambchops, mashed potatoes and some steamed carrots.  I was really hoping to just keep it simple.  It was but I'd never made lambchops before.  They turned out well.  Qbert really enjoyed them.  I was less enamored with them.  I just think they are fussy.  It's hard to get a good bite of just meat and not lots of fat or connective tissue.  I'm not sure if that's from my preparation method or just how they are.  But when I got a really good bite they were really really amazing.  But I had 2 chops and each had about 2 really good bites.  I had plenty of room for coffee cake for dessert with plenty of calories left over.  Food quality was banging and I even earn a bonus point.  Green foods hit 30% and red were only 41%.  No fitnessing happened but none was scheduled and it was around 100 degrees so we weren't attempting to go outside for anything.  Plus there was no time again.  That's two nights in a row cooking a real meal and I'm used to batch cooking and not spending that much time during the week.  I've already declared tonight is a no cooking night.  9 points earned.

At least it wasn't just me.  I'm not sure I'll ever bother to prepare them again.

Thursday - Pizza strikes again.  I had declared the day before that I wasn't planning on cooking for dinner last night.  I'm really behind on grading and all grades are due in by the end of the day today.  Last night was my last night to grade plus I had spent extra time cooking the couple nights beforehand.  I followed my usual meals during the day, not knowing what we would do for dinner.  I expected take out and looking forward to possibly Panda Express.  Qbert was home and when I asked him what he thought about dinner, he said he had really been craving Pizza Hut breadsticks.  And that's how it happened.  We ordered the big dinner box, 2 medium pizzas, breadsticks, with extra, wings, and then cinnamon stix because we can.  It was successful in that I didn't faceplant pizza.  I had 3 small pieces, probably 1 too many breadsticks, and there were only enough wings for two each.  I did have 2 cinnamon sticks but by then I was already over my calorie limit.  This is the problem with assigning points.  I'd lost the points so why bother?   I went over by 400 calories.  However, I did get 4 freggies in still and since part of dinner showed up in Noom as a yellow category food, the red category was only at 34%.  Green was too low at only 19%.  

 

I was also hoping to get some fitnessing in.  When I left work the air was think with humidity and heat index was above 100 degrees.  We decided to bump the walk to after the gold cup game and after dinner.  Pizza certainly made that more difficult but in the end it was the grading that got in the way.  I was trying to finish up all the grading for 1 of the 2 classes and I didn't finished until quite late.  By then it was time to pack up my lunch while the game finished up and then we went up to bed.  I had a bit of a cry about Qbert going off to college.  I've been quite teary this week, periods don't help with this either.   2 points earned. 

 

As it's the last day of my challenge week, I can award a point for fasting.  My average time to break fast was 8:48.  The week before, during the previous challenge, was 8:38.  The average for last challenge was 9:10 but that includes weekends and vacation days.  My week 0 was only work days so if I compare to last challenge's work day average of 8:46 I still improved by 2 minutes.  So 1 point awarded.

Friday - There was leftover pizza for dinner but this time I planned for it.  I decided to leave my calories at maintenance one more day.  Still getting my head in the game.  I stuck to planned meals at work and had an orange for an afternoon snack.  Dinner was leftover Pizza Hut.  I found a Pizza Hut entry in Noom that was in the orange category so I went with that.  I made it under calorie target but I did manage to go for a walk in the evening.  The air quality was shit because of the wildfires out west.  The humidity was off the charts too so I made it a short, slow walk and found a path with the fewest inclines I could find.  That helped pad the calorie deficit with some fitness calories and I finished with over 100 calories (at maintenance). 5 points.  Food quality was good, at least on paper.  Green category was a little low so no point for that but red was below target. 1 point.  4 freggies.  

 

I walked for a little less than a mile and it felt like it took forever.  I went for 1 round of the beginner KB workout.  I really had a touch time catching my breath so I skipped 2 of the exercises.  But it was something.  Points for both earned.

Saturday was dedicated to relaxing.  It was the first free weekend all month and I just needed rest.  I slept in until 11am and then lounged in bed until hunger got me moving.  I logged my planned dinner but couldn't decide on my other meals.  I started the day with some mixed fruit with greek yogurt while I started up AC and texted with DDG.  He was at his place hanging with his son.  DDG decided on Totino's pizza for lunch and by then I was getting pretty hungry as well and Totino's fit in my day nicely so that was lunch.  I snacked on a few chips in the afternoon but mostly held off until dinner.  I grilled some Hawaiian teriyaki chicken thighs on the grill, steamed some multi colored baby carrots but then finished them on the grill too, then I sliced up some baby potatoes and pan fried them with onion and shaved brussel sprouts.  The sprouts got a little burnt the first batch so on the 2nd batch I added them late.  Qbert and I had dinner on the back patio.  It was lovely.  I haven't spent any time out there all month either.  It's either hot as balls or I've just been too busy.   I finished the day with over 100 calories left over, and I did move my calorie target to increment 6 between tortoise and hare.  Green foods were a little low but so were red foods.  Plus all 4 freggies in.  I debated going for another walk but I just enjoyed relaxing all day and never bothered.  But none was scheduled anyway.   7 points

 

Sunday was another lovely day, only slightly less relaxing.  I slept in again, but only until 9:40.  I could have gone back to sleep for another round but I figured that would backfire when I couldn't get to sleep at a decent time Sunday and when my alarm went on Monday morning.  I lounged in bed and texted with DDG.  He had plans to go to his sister's to help with a few things.  I decided to join him so we could at least be spending that time together.  So he headed over right away.  I got up and had some fruit and yogurt to break my fast while I figured out what to eat.  We had planned to eat something at home before heading to his sister's but I had a row with my ex and it made my stomach all queasy.   We decided to grab Jimmy Johns on the way.  Instead of getting their chips, I packed some baked Cheetos.  After a visit and very little work at her house we headed home to shower.  She is a smoker and her ex husband is currently living with her and he's a chain smoker.  We couldn't stand the smell of ourselves.  We had a lay in after showers and then got up in time to make dinner before the US Mexico game.  Dinner was loose meat sandwiches with sautéed green beans.  I was still hungry so I waited for half time and made an english muffin with cheez whiz while DDG had some coffee cake.   I finished the day with just 18 calories left over but hit both green and red goals and got all 4 freggies.  I expected the work at his sister's to count towards functional fitness but we barely worked at all.  Instead of calling it a miss I'll just reschedule that for later in the week.  8 points.

Monday was a good day.  I logged a perfect day and followed it.  It even allowed for a piece of coffee cake.  Dinner was leftover grilled chicken, I had leftover potatoes and made some brown rice for DDG and then we split the leftover carrots.  170 calorie deficit and green foods were above 30% and red foods below 45% so all points earned, including a bonus point for exceptional food quality.  No fitnessing happened though.  I had planned for a walk but also planned to take Qbert for a Target trip for school and dorm supplies.  I bumped the walk to tomorrow so it's still not a miss.  9 points earned.

Tuesday - Another on point day!  I logged a perfect day with meals and snacks and stuck to it.  I did add some trail mix with my afternoon orange.  I have been getting progressively hungrier each day and I was listening to what my body needs.  My calorie target might be too low (It's not really that low) or I just need to get used to it.  Maybe I just need a refeed day.  But adding the trail mix didn't adversely affect the numbers as there was still a little room in the snackbox.  I had an english muffin in the snackbox to eat after dinner if I was still hungry but I was hungry again by the time I got home from work and DDG and I had a walked planned.  I went ahead and had the snack pre-walk and I was still hungry enough for dinner.  Dinner was loose meat sandwiches again, with sautéed fresh green beans.  I can never quite get fresh green beans right.  They are always just a little too crisp for me.  I was well under calorie target and had fitness calories that I didn't use.  Green foods were quite high at 48% and red low at 35% so a bonus point for that.  5 freggies.   

 

When DDG and I got back from our walk we just sat outside for a bit and ended up having a philosophic discussion about the world, god, and morality.  DDG's favorite quote of the evening was 'No bear is thinking that other bear's junk is bigger than mine'.   I completely forgot to do a kettlebell workout.  But I only intend to do 2 a week so there is still time.

Wednesday - I logged another perfect day but this time I didn't follow it.  I stuck to the logged breakfast and lunch, I had the minimal amount of chocolate and then an orange for an afternoon snack.  My hunger was still out of control.  Dinner was supposed to be loose meat sandwiches and vegetables with one more snack of whole wheat english muffins with cheese.   I didn't think this would cut it and I figured if I just made it a refeed day I could address the hunger and get back on track.  DDG had an errand to run anyway so I looked for a couple of dinner options out near where we were going.  The tavern we like to go to was completely full with not a single free table so we just went to Pepperjax grill.  I got a steak philly and fries.  I swapped out my dinner and remaining snacks, including the M&Ms for dinner but I wasn't super concerned if I went over my calorie target for the day.  I ended up not eating everything.  I wanted to address the hunger, not walk away feeling uncomfortable.  The kid making my philly didn't open the roll all the way so a good portion of it had no meat so I skipped that part of it and then only ate about half of the fries.  I was still overly full by the time we left.   Swapping the dinner in worked out pretty well.  I was still just under my calories target.  I finished with 85 calories left, 60 were exercise calories (see below).   Food quality suffered a bit but I still managed to be in range for green foods at 27%.  Red was high at 68%.  4 freggies in too.   Overall not sticking to my meal plan seemed like the right thing to do.  

 

We stopped at Home Depot and I bought a jig saw just for fun and DDG bought a new lawn mower for my place.  I'd say it was for me but really he's the only one who mows anymore so he bought it for himself.  He was planning to mow right away and I was feeling like I needed to walk off my dinner so I at least did the edging and pulled some weeds.  It wasn't enough to trigger any official fitness on my Fitbit but it was enough to get my heart going so I'm calling it a functional fitness workout.  That completes my 3 workouts for the week but I still need to get some kettlebelling done.
