Regular exercise (aside from short walks most days) hasn't been happening for a while. Evening exercise is difficult because I get home from work and I'm hungry. So I make food and eat it, but afterwards I'm fully into relax for the rest of the evening mode. So, let's try something different.

Break Camp:

Get up at 6:30 am

Morning routines

Ride Out:

Kettlebell workout M/W/F

Ruck T/Th

Set Up Camp:

Put away something in the house

Do something in the yard

Wash dishes

Turn In:

Evening prayers

Brush teeth

Lights out by 11 pm

I don't like getting up early, but I can do this for five weeks, right?

I started my challenge on Sunday (it seems weird to have the weekend broken up, but I think it will actually work this time because each day has its own separate thing instead of weekends being sort of combined). On Saturdays, "Ride Out" is going to be just doing something active during the day and on Sundays, it will be getting out the door so that I'm at church 15 minutes before it starts (those 15 minutes are very helpful to warm up for singing and practice any tricky music).

For scoring, everything gets 10% except Ride Out which gets 20%.

Week 1, Sunday - 100%

The alarm went of at 6:30 and I sat up right away, but stayed in bed for a few minutes listening to the birds. This is a vast improvement over hitting the snooze button and lying down again, so I'm okay with sitting for a bit before actually getting out of bed. The extra time from waking up early meant I wasn't rushing to get out the door for church (usually 5-10 minutes later than I want). I left right on time and it was very nice.

I put away the laundry (and a few other things I think) and cut back couple of blackberries and a few lilac shoots (I'm fine with having a lilac bush, but I don't want the dozens of small ones that are sprouting up around it). Some dishes were done and the other evening things. I started watching a movie kind of late, but I set an alarm and turned it off at 11 pm.

I have recently discovered the power of the evening alarm myself. Which is odd, because I've used an alarm to get up in the morning for most of my life, but it never occurred to me to use them at any other time of day.

Week 1, Monday - 100%

Morning was good. I got my kettlebell workout done. Nothing particularly exciting about the day, but stuff happened that needed to happen. I got a bit further into my movie, but still didn't finish it. That's okay, I generally don't finish books in one day either (although there are exceptions).

We started using them after the pandemic hit and we realized we were staying up late because we were lost in a game, show, or conversation. They’re really helpful.

Week 1, Tuesday - 90%

Exercise was ruck. I got everything done, but missed bedtime because I lost track of time while looking at rock climbing trips and suddenly it was 10:59 and I still had stuff to do before bed. I got my required glacier climb done a couple of weeks ago (photo at the start of the thread is my favorite from the way up on the morning we summited, plus it fit the getting up early theme), but the climbs that were going to meet the rock requirement got cancelled due to nearby fires and weather, so I need to get on another rock climb. Most of the trips have waitlists and the few that don't aren't open for registration yet, but I put myself on one waitlist and made a list of other climbs so I can keep track of when registration starts and hopefully get on one.

Week 1, Wednesday - 90%

Kettlebell workout was good. And stuff happened. I finished pulling all the weeds out of one of my raised beds (except the tiny fir trees which I left for now because they're cute although I don't really want trees growing in my raised bed). I don't know if I'll end up planting anything this year because it's so late in the season (how is it August already?), but at least it will be fewer weeds next year.

I missed bedtime again because I went on an evening hike and then opted to eat more food as bedtime approached because I feel like food has been off this week. Food is annoying and unfortunately necessary. Anyway, missed bedtime and then was having trouble falling asleep when the SAR pager went off, so I got dressed and prepped my gear to go, but the people got themselves unlost, so I didn't actually have to go. Instead of going back to trying to sleep right away, I read for a couple of hours (books are seriously dangerous). I might regret this today.

It occurs to me that food might be off because I'm expecting my normal breakfast and lunch to keep me satisfied, but I have started doing morning exercise stuff. No wonder I'm going through more than my normal snacks at work (and am still hungry). I'm also having trouble eating proper dinners because food is annoying and I haven't gone shopping recently and need to plan what I'm going to eat.

Not sure what climate zone you are in, but there are a large number of cool weather plants like peas or broccoli that you can probably still plant. You can also get good fall crops from roots veggies (radishes, beets, and carrots are my favorites. Might try turnips for the first time this year) and leafy stuff (lettuce, kale, spinach)

Looks like I'm in planting zone 8b. I could probably get a few plants in. The trick is figuring out which ones. After my first year where I didn't eat half the stuff I grew, I decided I would only plant stuff I was likely to eat. Plus there are some pests that made a few things not worth the bother to grow. I'd be happy to have broccoli and carrots, but it took too much time and effort to keep the cabbage worms from destroying them. The last time or two I planted stuff (it hasn't happened every year) I've been down to basil, romaine lettuce, and zucchini, although I do want to give green beans a try. There might be barely enough time for them before the first frost. Maybe I'll plant a few basil seeds as well. I'm getting low on store-bought dried basil and it might be fun to try making my own.

Week 1, Thursday - 90%

Missed getting up on time because I woke up at 6:30 and decided that I didn't want to be driving later that evening on that little sleep (see Wednesday; books are dangerous), so I reset my alarm for 7:30. My legs are a bit sore this week. Not sure if it's the kettlebells, rucking, or the fact that I did one or the other three days in a row, but I decided it would be good to skip a day, so I went for an unweighted walk for exercise. I cooked up the rice and beans dish I've been gradually working on all week (had to soak and cook the beans and make the rice before combining everything). And I managed to get everything done before bedtime! Yay!

You are doing great! Also support the not driving while tired bit! A very good reason to get more sleep

Well, it was a good decision immediately preceded by the bad decision of staying up too late reading, sooo...maybe it sort of balances out.

Oh I love a good book hangover though. It's one of the perks of adulthood- staying up until the wee hours to finish a good story. Then sleeping in.  So wonderful.

Yeah, I love it too, but I really should limit it to days when I don't have to get up for work in the morning (that darn responsibility thing). Pulling late nights and all-nighters is getting more difficult than it was in my 20's.

VERY TRUE! It does take a few days to recover. And there are nights I wake up because I fell asleep and the book finally landed on my face 😹😹

responsibility is not a fun grown up feeling! 😁

I had this same problem. I would get home from work so hungry and make dinner and then it was too late for a workout. I wasn't a fan of moving my workouts to the morning and it didn't really fit with my routine anyway, so I started playing around with a snack shortly before or as I was leaving work so that I could do a workout when I got home. It took some time to figure out what size snack and what time it needed to happen, but eventually I was able to get it figured out.

I just emailed a local nursery about red huckleberry plants! I want to put some in my yard. They're out of stock right now, but I suspect the middle of summer is not the best time of year to plant them, so hopefully they will have some when it is the right time. I'm happy that I finally did something about this instead of just thinking about it like I've done for the last year or two.

This morning I woke up five minutes before my alarm. During the first few days of Week 1, I was waking up between 5 and 60 minutes early and going back to sleep until the alarm, but since Wednesday night/Thursday morning when I stayed up several hours too late, I haven't been waking up early. I feel like I'm caught up now!

I planted green beans and basil a few days ago. Now I'm watering and waiting impatiently to see if they grow.

I have decided I'm going continue to walk instead of ruck for a while. Otherwise things are going well. Boxes are getting checked off.

Last week, I got tired of writing down challenge stuff that got done. It's getting done anyway and I have some nice boxes on a sheet of paper posted on the wall that are getting checked. Maybe I will do summaries at the end of the week if I remember.

Last night, I disassembled the electric weed whacker. The spinny thing was having issues because there was grass wrapped around the inside part of it and also the spinny thing was kind of loose and wobbly. I got all the grass out, but some of the plastic parts are worn/melty/deformed. I don't know if the loose/wobbly problem will be fixed because it was too late to test it out when I got done reassembling it. I'm a bit sad that the plastic bits aren't more durable.

There are a couple of seedlings coming up in my garden, but they're kind of on the edge of the area and it seems a little early for the stuff I planted, so I suspect they're weeds that are just happy that I'm watering (we basically got no rain in July).

Challenge things kind of fell apart starting on Friday. Friday was a good day. I took the day off work to go rock climbing, but the mountain was in a cloud so we opted for scrambling (no ropes) a different mountain instead. It was loads of fun! Saturday and Sunday were pretty good too, although I forgot to check things off in my boxes and I don't remember exactly what I got done. Since then, I've been in the 30% to 50% range mostly because I've been skipping a lot of the evening stuff.

The weed whacker repair failed. I had an idea about putting in a big washer to try and distribute some of the load, but I'll need to take it all apart again to see if it will do what I want it to. I've been putting that off because there's like 50 billion screws to get this thing open (okay, it's probably more like 15) and I don't know whether I will be able to fix it.

Only one of the eight beans I planted came up :(. I also have three tiny sprouts that look like basil seedlings and a bunch of other small things that are almost certainly weeds. There's also some grass that's annoying.
