Hover: Tanktimus Doubles Down on Consistency Instead of Progress

Recommended Posts

Many children of the 80s revere "The Lady" as the finest helicopter in existence.

I am among them.

Fixed wing aircraft must maintain a minimum forward velocity in order for the air to move over the wings fast enough to create sufficient lift to keep them in the air. Should an aircraft slow the to the minimum speed safety devices should warn the pilot they are at "stall speed." If the aircraft dips below stall speed, the wings will no longer generate sufficient lift and the aircraft will fall from the sky. Rotary wing aircraft, however, generate lift by moving their blades in a circular motion at very high RPM. If the tail rotor provides sufficient force to counteract the rotation of the main rotor, the helicopter can hover, appearing motionless in mid-air. Maintaining a hover is considerably difficult, as constant adjustments must be made to allow for the natural air currents around the aircraft.

In fitness, when progress stops unintentionally an athlete is said to have stalled. However, when someone stops their progress intentionally, they can call it a "hover" and make it the theme of their challenge.

I've been slowly progressing with KettleBells after a complete respawn. I'm writing all this out a week before zeroweek starts, and assuming I'll be at six reps for all exercises on the NF beginner KettleBell workout. My plan is to stay at six reps for at least four weeks beginning with zero week before adding anymore reps. I'm doing this to let my body adapt so I can improve safely and steadily, and also to work on form on the reverse lunges. Those who have followed me in the past know the only thing I hate more than burpees are lunges, and the only thing I hate more than lunges are burpees. I still don't get down to full depth on the reverse lunges, my knees freak out and I stop about halfway down. I'm going to work on getting lower in the lunge. I'll shoot for two to three KB workouts a week. Stretching or going for walks on off days are a bonus.

I'll also keep cooking. Those of you who don't know me, be warned. Don't come read this thread if you are hungry.

Here for the intentional suspension of forward movement

Your explanatory paragraph reminds me of an Air Force friend of mine who often said "If the wings are moving faster than the fuselage, the aircraft is inherently unstable and therefore unsafe" to explain why he only flew in fixed wing aircraft

I'm reminded of the fact that walking is only controlled falling, and is inherently unstable. Though, admittedly, we don't tend to do it thousands of feet above the ground.

(I admire your friend's point of view. That is the sort of geeky and opinionated grip on physics I can relate to. But darned if I don't also admire the engineering and maneuverability in a helicopter, because that is a sort of geeky and opinionated grip on physics, too.)

The Great Reading Thread of 2023

“I've always believed that failure is non-existent. What is failure? You go to the end of the season, then you lose the Super Bowl. Is that failing? To most people, maybe. But when you're picking apart why you failed, and now you're learning from that, then is that really failing? I don't think so." - Kobe Bryant, 1978-2020. Rest in peace, great warrior.

Burpies are off doing their own thing. To paraphrase Heidi, "I have no enemies if I don't let them make me fight."

Today is a good day. Sra. Tanque is home for the US holiday, so I came in to work like normal instead of staying home with Little Bit (For those who didn't follow last challenge, her daycare class got closed for two weeks due to a COVID scare). Gotta get that holiday pay. I did KBs in the morning. In the initial post I expected to already be on 6 reps for each set, but that didn't happen due to the aforementioned school situation. Today was 6,5,5, and it was an appropriate challenge. I also cooked lunch before coming in to work. I put some cubed butternut squash on a baking tray lined with foil, and seasoned it with olive oil, white wine vinegar, salt, pepper, garlic powder and dried thyme. I stirred and put it in a 425 degree oven for 20 minutes. Meanwhile I cut up some chicken thighs (I held them over a skillet and cut them with chicken shears, it's faster, easier, and you don't have to clean raw meat juice off a cutting board) and cooked them in avocado oil till the excess liquid rendered out, then drained that from the pan and added salt, pepper, fresh chopped rosemary, dried thyme, garlic powder and white wine vinegar. Then I took the squash out of the oven, moved it to one side of the pan, and added about 20 ounces of broccoli florets and seasoned them the same way as the squash. It went back in the oven for another ten minutes, while the chicken had time to brown. It was all delicious.

Remember, you were warned not to come here hungry.

I never thought of shears for cutting up chicken. I recently was enlightened to it for herbs and veggies and I'm like "WHOA." But I can see chicken possibilities now too.  BUT Isn't it harder to clean shears? Hmmm...I do like that you have LESS clean up though and no meat juice on the countertops.

We have a Meat Cutting Board and a Not Meat Cutting Board. And you can't mix them up. OR YOU DIE*

*Death being that you get a firm reminder from Mom or I that one does not mix raw meat tools with none raw meat tools followed by some lengthy lecture about various food-related illnesses.

Love Air Wolf!  (Also a lover of A-Team)  ((and more embarrassingly, Greatest American Hero, lol))

This is a great set up, and to use Commander Shepard quote (of which I am allowed, because I am Command Shepard) - This is the greatest set up on the citadel.

Also, as a one time lover of military aircraft, the AV-8B Harrier can also hover, and it got its name from the harrier hawk, which ALSO hovers!

All this to say, lots of awesome things hover!!
