The Guildhall of Champions: General Chat

Recommended Posts

Welcome one and all!  Come rest ye weary rebels, put your feet up and order a beverage.  Security at the door will check your cloak, weapons, and armaments (but I wouldn't trust them with your valuables wink wink).  The fires in the hearth are roaring and the barkeep is freshly returned from both a specialty cocktail course and a smoothie retreat, so they can handle just about anything your heart could desire!

Since we're entering the autumnal months, I have it on good authority that the Guildhall staff have set us up a solstice bounty out back...  There's a corn maze to ruck through, a pumpkin patch for all your Samhain carving needs, and I hear we even have wagon rides through the Hundred Acre Backwood this year!  Also, through some high fantasy magickal shenanigans this humble Ranger cannot quick fathom, there are spectral waitstaff throughout the grounds who can appear and take your order in a flash!

Don't fret though, they're friendly and more akin to Nearly-Headless Nick than a poltergeist.

Still, greet them warmly if you don't want your order messed up ;)

"Asha!" The barkeep called out with excitement; a grin taking up the majority of his face.

"Shhhh! Keep it down, if ya don't mind?" Asha responded in a hushed tone, and looked around cautiously before responding, "I'd like to not draw a ton of attention at the moment. Trying to keep from being distracted."

The barkeep winked and nodded in knowing agreement and handed Asha a steaming cup of soothing blue liquid, slightly resembling the taste of pumpkin.

As she turned toward the fire, she heard laughter and excitement coming from outside.

"I guess enjoying the festivities for a little bit can't hurt." She said, smiling, and joined in the fun.

Well, with an offer like that, I won't jump out and scare you. Only you.

Everyone else, you're still fair game.

Wait there's a corn maze?

*disappears into the corn maze with the intent of jumping out and scaring everyone*

I hate it when people do that! I'd most likely scream and  run, then all the sudden I'd realize it was you, and come give you a big hug.

Pumpkin spice smoothie sounds remarkably like what I had for breakfast (chai flavour protein powder, cinnamon, banana, oats and oat milk)…

”barkeep- could you make me a-”

before the words were even out of her mouth the barkeep was handing her something amazingly orange, with an extra fat metal straw… did, did that have actual pumpkin in it? Awww yeahhhh, sneaking in a veggie!

Removes his shirt looks down at a large suntan-deficict belly and goes into the corn-maze. Turning his head after a few steps into the maze, looks back to the start, showing a grin that reads "we'll see who scares who".

At the same time keeping an eye out for the chaplain or the spectral waitstaff to not get busted on this friendly shenanigans...

Heya!!! Everyone!!!

I'm back (not that i was gone) but still. I feel like i'm  at the first steps on the voyage of becoming a new version of myself!

I might change tactics and just start perching on top of the maze wall like a gargoyle and waiting for someone to look up and catch a fright.

A corn maze sounds like a redundancy.  All maize is corn.

But apparently not all corn is maize? Google is trying to tell me that in Scotland and Ireland, corn means oats, and in Britain it means wheat.  Would a UK resident like to clarify because that sounds like they made it up.

Yeah, there's a translation issue in play here, and a somewhat archaic one. "Corn" didn't used to mean a particular species of grain, it was a generic term meaning "this is the local main staple". (Which is to say, oats in Scotland, wheat in England, etc. And certainly maize in the US.) And it just drifted from there to mean a species. It's like someone took the word "main export" and redefined over time it to mean "car". It's true in a country that only exports cars, but it's not exactly the original meaning of the word. It could mean oil or vegetables elsewhere. Only now the country that only exports cars is pushing the redefinition elsewhere.

The really interesting linguistic loss/usage is "bear". "Bear" is not the name of the animal. Neither is "bruin". Those both are just polite euphemisms meaning "the brown guy [that we're definitely not gonna say the name of in case it summons one]". English has actually lost the English word for "bear", because we were so damned scared of saying their name. If we still had it, it'd be something descended from "artos" or "arthos" or perhaps "arctos". So every time we say "bear", we're saying "oh god, just don't summon one of those killing machines, I'll use the honorific euphemism, I promise". I think the modern version would probably be arth. We should be visiting the arths in the zoo.

(The Arctic? "The Place Where Bears Are". The Antarctic? "The Place Opposite Where the Bears Are". Apparently, Europeans had a serious thing about bears.)
